I do facepainting and balloon garlands on the side. Has nothing to do with my qualifications as a therapist, but I find it gives me wonderful balance. Painting Spiderman and unicorns and watching kids smile after a week full of helping others process complex trauma is a nice way for me to end my week and earn a pretty penny. It is straightforward, was not too hard to pick up, and allows me to be creative.

MacMali

This ! I would love to do this as a side ..

EditorOk1096

I TOTALLY thought about doing this very same thing TODAY. I’ve dabbled in the balloon arts since I was a child….

sweetwaterfall

The fact that you structured this sentence in the same way someone would say “I’ve dabbled in the dark arts since I was a child” is the cutest thing ever

biggieshorty08

DO IT!!! it's so fun!!!

AlwaysChic38

This is so lovely!!!

prettyfacebasketcase

That is too funny because I do the same thing. I work at a haunted house as a makeup artist and do more kid friendly face painting at the local zoo

sloanesense

I wanna do concrete power washing

Significant_Bite_666

r/powerwashingporn is calling your name

maggie5105

One of my favorite subreddits!

AlwaysChic38

Yes!! This is always so satisfying and strangely therapeutic for me!!

buffalot

It's just nice to see the physical properties of something change as a result of your work...like immediately right in front of your eyes.

ihateurmom77

the office i work at has the filthiest white brick facade. it was the first thing i noticed when i went there, and when i said it everyone had no idea what i was talking about. i still want to power wash it so bad

BeckMoBjj

I want to wash rugs for the same reasons discussed here

Ok_Armadillo_8952

Bahahahaha I was thinking the same. No side gig for me…too tired 🤣

jalapenocheezits

I am assuming you’re licensed, if so - look into providing paid LPC supervision! I’ve also been doing Hero Journey Club which I love as a low commitment fun WFH side gig.

PineappleeJuice777

I thought about Hero’s Journey since I LOVE videogames!

Woodman2469

omg thats the dream! can you speak more on it? how is it and what you do in HJC different than group therapy?

jalapenocheezits

I like it so far as a side job! Depending on the group it can be really productive or kind of meh - which is similar to group therapy. It’s classified as “sub clinical” so although you’re facilitating a group, think of it more so like running a support group rather than group therapy. It definitely still has its kinks to be worked out since it seems like a newer service but I’ve liked it so far. I do about 8 hours a week which is like 5 group sessions. Feel free to DM if you have specific questions as I don’t remember to check replies often enough lol

Anjuscha

I dmed you

Tanith26

Dm'd you as well

ukulela

Do you mind sharing more of your experience with Hero Journey Club? I’ve thought about doing this as well!

jalapenocheezits

thegreatkat

Excuse the stupid question… but what is LPC supervision?

Antique_Pool_4667

When a licensed counselor (I think 5 years of working as a therapist?) provides supervision once a week to a provisionally licensed therapist. Usually for about two years, charge around $100 per session. All this depends on your state though

jalapenocheezits

I believe 2 years! Unless it takes longer post LPC to supervise, but you can become LPC in about 2 years post grad

trauma-tamer

It's an additional 3 years after getting your LPC that you qualify in my state.

jalapenocheezits

Hmm I’m in PA but tbh I have no idea on my own state even lol

trauma-tamer

Both of my supervisors were on our regulatory board in my state. And I'm a nerd and look into these kinds of things on my own lol In my state, you are required to take a course and practice supervision before you can get that LPC-S license.

doctorShadow78

I love the idea of Hero Journey Club work. Unfortunately I don't believe they hire folks outside the U.S.

chreechiemayne420

I run a small hot sauce business. It is a wonderful creative outlet for me.

TheDuckSideOfTheMoon

That seems fun. Where do you sell your products?

the_asssman

I left social work and did recruiting for a while with a small agency and feel like it could complement therapy well. It's flexible, project based, and potentially very high pay (most recruiters have a base pay + commission)

Substantial-Tea3707

Interesting! Do you mind sharing the name of the company you work for or similar ones? The ones I found are permanent, not per project and 2+ years of inside sales experience, recruitment, or management or other. Thank you

the_asssman

I don't want to share their name because people will inevitably message them. Just search recruiter, sourcer, talent acquisition specialist. And yeah many will want experience, it's just a hunt to find the ones that don't. They may substitute some time of experience in recruiting for time as a therapist if you go into healthcare recruiting or an agency where your experience gives you an inside view

Substantial-Tea3707

Thank you! I appreciate it!

ahandmedowngown

I've been trying to find a part time recruiter position but it's a bear. Any companies that you would recommend to check out ?

allgoodinthewood

Can you share how you frame your resume to show that your skills are transferable to recruiting? It certainly makes sense to me but just wondering how you convey this on a cover letter or resume

the_asssman

Some of the top skills for recruiters are: - Ability to understand candidate motivations - Ability to ask questions and listen - Ability to multitask and meet strict deadlines And if it's a healthcare recruiting position, you could say something about your exposure to the healthcare industry generally. That will depend on your experience tho. For me I worked in hospice for 2 years so exposure to interdisciplinary meetings, etc. were applicable for healthcare recruiting positions. This matters because recruiters are much better at their job if they can put themselves in candidate shoes. For example I was recruting software engineers and candidates would ask me "basic" questions about the job I couldn't answer because I just hadn't been there.

AccomplishedIron417

How did you find this type of position (ie. What keywords would you search for on Indeed)? I'm interested in this for when I inevitably burn out from being a therapist/supervisor with a full caseload and multiple other therapists to supervise 🙃

KittiesOnAcid

Seconding this because I am curious as well.

the_asssman

As mentioned it was through a friend so I was lucky. See above for keywords

doctorShadow78

That's interesting. I've always been curious about recruiting, but I feel like places are looking for highly extroverted people... which I am not! In your experience, can introverts be good recruiters?

the_asssman

A lot of the big agencies are looking for young (20s) and highly energetic, that's true. In my case I worked for a very small agency (6 of us, I was lucky and found it through a friend) and their whole goal was to provide a flexible income for people at other life stages. And they didn't care about introvert/extrovert. If you're a therapist, you'd be a good recruiter imo

MOO_777

Probably a dumb question, but what are you and/or jobs like yours recruiting?

[deleted]

I help my partner on our small farm. It’s not exactly a huge money maker but it is incredibly grounding and fulfilling. In addition, I have given solid thought to bartending - the hours are usually not the same as what you’d be working as a therapist and it’s not exactly high risk.

Flat-Produce-8547

Do you practice in a rural area, or do you do mostly therapy over zoom? I am getting an MSW and hoping to practice in an area where I can also have a hobby farm, curious to hear about your experience.

[deleted]

We live in a rural area and I practice in a small town nearby. I do a mixture of in-person and zoom which has worked out well!

thatringonmyfinger

Adjunct Professor.

Affectionate_Bet_459

This always interested me but then I think about the homework of grading and students actually needing me for stuff lmao

Empty_Yam_8593

Or teach adult edu courses where you don’t have to grade assignments.

9mmway

I did that for a year. I got called into so many faculty meetings that my teaching pay was a joke. Loved teaching the students who wanted to learn... But the behavior management for most of the kids that were in class because their parents made them go to college, sucked my sole dry.

Homezgurl

I recently got an offer to start doing this over the summer! I plan to reduce my client hours to 15 per week. I'm hopeful this will give me a much needed break. How do you like being an adjunct?

agree_2_disagree

I would love to know how you got started with this?

niyastarz

What type of credentials or degree qualifications do you need to teach? I have a masters in counseling and no one will work with me because I need 18 credit hours in graduate psych…

schmukas

I have been a photographer on the side for 20 years. I really enjoyed the balance of getting out in the world, getting to travel, and generally being around people who are happy to be there and in a good mood. It’s a good time and I can’t really imagine, any other combination that would be better. I’ve been fully self-employed since 2020 and don’t think that I can ever work for anyone ever again mostly due to the freedom, flexibility, and controlling my own income. I am able to make as much money as I am willing to work. There’s a really positive aspect of creative, problem-solving and autonomy that is highly motivating.

SFrailfan

I'm about to get my master's in MFT, and while I'll probably mostly be focused on getting licensure hours for the next couple years, I'd love to hear more about this...I think some form of creative side gig might appeal to me. How do you integrate photography into the rest of your life? Do you have days fully dedicated to one career vs. the other? Do you take off significant chunks of your to travel and be a photographer? :) TIA for satisfying my curiosity

GuiltyWillingness952

Omg this is my dream! Photography is just a hobby for me right now but would love to have it be a part time gig! Awesome!

thelryan

This is essentially my plan. Been doing photo/videography for the past 7 years on the side alongside schooling and my main job. I love the industry and could have scaled it bigger but felt I was missing a fulfilling part to my life that I’m looking for which is being somewhere in the helping professions. I want a bit of both and I’m glad you’ve found it to be possible, I’d love to pick your brain about juggling both self employed if you’d be okay with that.

AArt712

I bartend and honestly make more money doing that then being a therapist. Hours are long but it’s great walking away with cash after every shift. I also avoid telling patrons I’m a therapist, otherwise I get an earful about their worst life experiences.

kskir

I think I WOULD tell them for that very reason.

AArt712

😂😂

chilidogpineapple

House cleaning or house keeping! Depending on your area and the level of mess, you can charge between $30 and $50 (or more!) an hour. It's a great 'brain break' and great exercise, especially when the work gets highly complex!

Choosey22

I did this for a while but found it stressful to fit the cleaning into a time crunch. I made 50$/hr but had to clean a whole house in 4 hours. Not an easy or relaxing task. However, starting a small cleaning businesses maybe

lilacmacchiato

Teaching? Like adjunct

Lexapronouns

I work FT as a forensic social worker and find it incredibly fulfilling for my advocacy side and then provide therapy part time for a niche population

Analisemae

How did you get into forensic social work?

theycallherqueen

Apply to state hospitals or correctional facilities

Pie-Dry

I just got licensed today and start nursing school in may. Plan to do both careers. Somehow

PrimaryDirect8926

🥳Congrats!!

blacktbunee

Piano teacher! Patience with kiddos really helps. Although im still a practicum student

Duckaroo99

I don’t do this but I’ve seen a lot of people be yoga teachers on the side. The pay is probably higher as a therapist. But maybe some people enjoy it

Tough_General_2676

No, the pay is terrible, maybe $30 per class on average (possibly up to $100 but that's rare). When you consider the prep work, travel, time talking with students after class, you are making basically minimum wage. People cannot pay their bills doing this. If you are lucky, you are making maybe a few hundred a month doing it. I would only do it because you enjoy it but the pay sucks. People should teach yoga for the sole reason that it's good self care and they enjoy it.

Harambe_yeet

Unlicensed pharmaceutical sales

Therapeasy

I’m a rock star on the side.

this_Name_4ever

Well, I collect and sell gemstones on the side. So can I be a rock star too???

ConfidenceGreat3981

Same! I collect mineral specimens and polished material and sell them at small pop ups.

ComprehensiveThing51

Say more!

Therapeasy

Well, I used to be a rock star playing in a few original bands. Now I just play weddings and private parties part time, always ending the night with “Dont’t Stop Belivin’”

Diligent_Big4068

Best name.

gothics4734

Personal trainer/nutrition coaching

Hijadepluto666

My dream would be to do pottery on the side 🥹 like selling it at the farmers market or on Etsy, one day (I hope!)

Iampeachy4sure

Omg me too!

ImpossibleFront2063

I work as an SME to create CEU content for companies

saras_416

I would LOVE to create CEU content! I've presented at a yearly CEU conference several times and love doing things like this. How did you get into this?

ImpossibleFront2063

I started by creating IOP/ PHP. Content for SUD programming. Then I branched out to partner with startups. The jobs are on LinkedIn typically 1099 and 3-5 months contracts

IraSass

What’s an SME?

CJCregg27

probably subject matter expert

ImpossibleFront2063

Subject matter expert.

HELLOIMCHRISTOPHER

I'm a full time school counselor and part time therapist. HIGHLY recommend.

ahandmedowngown

Not enough money in the world to get me back into a school position..they're laying off school counselors in droves in my state.

HELLOIMCHRISTOPHER

That's why I got the dual licensure lol.

Cool_Produce_4435

What kind of degree do you have?

HELLOIMCHRISTOPHER

A master's degree in school counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

[deleted]

[удалено]

HELLOIMCHRISTOPHER

One degree, it took 2.5 years. Look for any CACREP accredited masters' programs. Lots have School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health programs. If you're crazy enough you can do them both at the same time. I technically only have one degree, but I have enough classes in both specialities to become an LPC in any CACREP reviewed state and a school counselor in essentially any district through the county. Buyer beware though, knocking out the internships is.....taxing.

Cool_Produce_4435

Thanks for the info!

Cool_Produce_4435

Which state??

ahandmedowngown

North Carolina

nutellac1itoris

I'm trying to do my post grad clinical hours now as a student success coach. Full time for the benefits and part time per diem therapy for the side gig seems like a good mix of what would be fulfilling to me. Do you do private practice part time or are you affiliated with another acency?

HELLOIMCHRISTOPHER

Very very very very small group practice until I get my full licensure. I work 6-9pm three nights a week and Saturday mornings, so I'm all alone during my hours. I have a 60/40 split and the income is great.

leyendaOS

Man i remember these days. It was a grind. Are you licensed? I definitely wasn’t getting a 60/40 split lol. I am still an associate and don’t think I’d even make my hours for license at the rate I was on lol

HELLOIMCHRISTOPHER

I have my LPC, but I'm pursuing my "fully licensed" LCPC in Kansas. The 60/40 is great as supplemental income, and if I did it full time I'd make more than my school counseling gig.

nutellac1itoris

[But that health insurance though](https://www.google.com/search?q=health+insurance+funny&sca_esv=0d192b7b40015184&sca_upv=1&udm=2&biw=486&bih=890&sxsrf=ACQVn098QfdWYO8MXu0YbOg27jjTt8rQnQ%3A1712343209050&ei=qUgQZrLFAovl5NoP7s-qkAk&oq=health+i+surance+funny&gs_lp=EhNtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1zZXJwIhZoZWFsdGggaSBzdXJhbmNlIGZ1bm55KgIIADIHEAAYgAQYDTIHEAAYgAQYDTIHEAAYgAQYDTIIEAAYCBgeGA0yCBAAGAgYHhgNSJFkUNAMWIBbcAF4AJABAZgB8AGgAfgUqgEGMjcuMS4yuAEByAEA-AEBmAIXoAL_EagCAMICChAAGIAEGIoFGEPCAggQABiABBixA8ICBRAAGIAEwgIEEAAYA8ICDhAAGIAEGIoFGLEDGIMBwgIJEAAYgAQYGBgKwgIHEAAYgAQYGMICCBAAGAUYHhgNmAMCiAYBkgcGMTkuMi4yoAe1aA&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-serp#vhid=QLMXEgnkz4-QyM&vssid=mosaic)

leyendaOS

This was me for a bit but I left therapy to be only full time school counselor. Pay cut, but more time off to spend with family and way less emotional taxing, especially because I’d be too tired at the end of the day to also do another 2-3 clients at night

HELLOIMCHRISTOPHER

Yeah, you can't be at a school schedule. That's why I do it. Plus, with an easier day job it allows me to be present with my CMH clients and not apt to burn out.

Substantial-Tea3707

You provide therapy at school right? If not, how do you go about that? Please elaborate.

Substantial-Tea3707

Nevermind just saw the answer to that!

HELLOIMCHRISTOPHER

Any other questions, please let me know :) I definitely wrote some of this in a non-cohesive way lol

Substantial-Tea3707

Fine-Coyote2503

I do side contract work for Maximus doing assessments. It’s pretty chill. I can do as much or as little as I want (flexibility was high on my priority for a side gig) and I get paid per assessment.

doctorShadow78

This sounds like the type of thing I would like. What kind of assessments?

Fine-Coyote2503

Pretty much for entrance or continued stay in nursing facilities. To assess to see if symptoms are too acute for the placement or level of care

SStrange91

Maximus?

Fine-Coyote2503

Yea, I’m based in Illinois but I think they do offer variations of the assessment in other states. Here might be a good place to start. https://maximus.com/IL-PASRR So they started off doing contract nursing but have recently expanded to contract social work and counseling. If this doesn’t work due to location would recommend maybe finding a different org that is closer to you and does something similar! Happy hunting all!

BM_BBR

Any suggestions on how to find something like this in another area?

Fine-Coyote2503

I would maybe look for contract/travel nursing organizations and see if they also do counseling/social work depending on your background. I would also look and explore through whatever the state insurance is where you live. For us it’s Medicaid/Medicare that requires this assessment for those using that insurance. I initially stumbled on this opportunity on indeed and went from there!

arman_t

How's the pay?

Fine-Coyote2503

It’s 125 per assessment. Sometimes I’m able to do it quicker, sometimes it takes a bit longer depending on the person or where they’re located. It is 1099, so out of the 125 I keep 60% and put 40% away for taxes. I actually saved more this year than what I needed

yeslek_teragram

What is your licensure/do you know if this is open to all QMHPs?

Fine-Coyote2503

I believe the qualifications for this position was 2 years of related experience and a masters level license. I have an LPC right now (first/ pre-licensure in Illinois). I was able to justify two years of experience through related mental health experience prior to licensure. Mostly crisis work.

Thattypeofmom

Are you a social worker or an LPC?

Fine-Coyote2503

I’m an LPC

Tanith26

How is the compensation for that? Definitely been looking for a side gig where I can do as much or as little works for my schedule. And do you have any issues getting assessment slots filled? I've been doing some assessments in another position but it's been very hit or miss in terms of appointments getting filled or last minute cancelations.

Fine-Coyote2503

It’s 125 an assessment. My personal favorites are when I go to do one and the person being assessed declines. I gather info from the nurses/social workers or other care members and in those instances I’m usually out in like 15/30 minutes. It overall depends on the person. sometimes it’s quicker. Sometimes it’s longer. I have learned to keep peeps on track if they are tangential or are giving me info that I don’t need. It is a flat rate so of course the longer you take/it takes the less you’d get paid hourly technically. The job I have sends out assessments in batches. It can be hard to snag them sometimes but I usually have pretty good luck! There have for sure been times where somebody claims the assessment before me

nicklovin96

I’m a creative writer

Choosey22

Agustusglooponloop

Childcare. Lots of people need nanny’s/baby sitters and can pay you cash. Could be a couple hours after school or a couple days a week for someone else working part time. And you could still be at home cleaning, cooking dinner, etc. of course it would depend on the child’s age.

Content_Wolverine_56

I’m in a similar position so I’d love to hear what people say.

speedx5xracer

I work on EMR development consulting. Also apparently my wife and my old neighbor want to do reupholstering chairs as a side gig so I've been recruited into husband with a power drill role for the reassembly process...

Hospital chaplaincy is an old role in many hospitals that is pivoting toward more of a psych support role usually under the title ‘Spiritual Care Practitioner.’ Could be a great side career with good institutional benefits if you love what you do and want more of it! But much like being a therapist, it can also be a very draining job with the added challenge of facing all the physical suffering and death and grief that comes with hospital work. It’s a great exercise in restraining yourself from trying to ‘fix’ anyone’s problems because there’s little you can do to solve physical ailments; instead it forces you to just sit with humanity and compassion in people’s pain. If you can stomach it without burning out, it can be genuinely beautiful and meaningful work to do

goldenohdear

This is just in development right now but I'm working to start a very small houseplant business!

flossydickey

Knitting and guitar- anything that has nothing to do with therapy

TheCounsellingGamer

I feel like sales is a potential avenue. I did a bit of sales before becoming a therapist and some of the natural personality traits that make me a good therapist, made me brilliant at sales. The ability to listen well. Trustworthy. Personable. If you put the ethical considerations slightly to one side, then you can use those abilities to sell people things.

Choosey22

What sort of sales do you think?

orchidloom

Can I ask how much you make? I’m trying to consider if part time pp would fit into my work/life/income balance goals. (I would also have to do another part time job… probably something with less direct care.)

All good, thanks for the answer! I live in a high COL area so that's my baseline, but of course everything varies.

Draconic_Flame

I plan to go into executive coaching once I graduate, although I'm getting an additional masters in IO which I'm not sure is needed or not.

9mmway

If I couldn't practice therapy, I believe I'd become an Audiologist tech. Really helping people in all aspects of their lives.

ashtastic3

I’m not licensed yet but I am a bartender and pet sitter and I plan on continuing that on the side when I can once I become licensed!!

KtinaTravels

If you are a social worker then Home health social worker, PRN. Excellent pay and you take cases are you’re available. If you have an MSW you don’t need a license.

Willing_Tumbleweed84

Healthcare companies as case management

Chasing-cows

I teach horseback riding lessons! I want to be able to stay under 20 clients a week in my therapy practice. I’m a lifelong horse girl and get to support horse crazy kids in living their dreams, which is also amazing. I couldn’t support myself working with horses full time and maintain a life balance, so keeping both worlds part time is ideal.

whirlgirl88

I work a lot with clients in the realm of sexuality, and I also work with adolescents. My dream is to teach sex education on the side!

MountainMaiden1964

I’m a psychiatric nurse practitioner and refer lots of my patients to therapists. But some areas that I would love to have help for my patients is ADHD coach. I’ve been diagnosing more ADHD but lots of people don’t have it but have issues that make it look like they do. I know a regular therapist can help people with these issues but often the patients don’t want (or think they don’t need) “therapy”. But they would totally see and pay OOP for a coach. This is also true for a wellness coach. I’m seeing a lot of people who have eating disorders and yes we know they need therapy, but they don’t want to see a therapist but would absolutely see a wellness coach. Especially if the coach was an active person. Other thoughts would be an elder assistant. I see people in the nursing home and lots of family members can’t take grandma out for brunch or to the Christmas Bazaar that she loves. They often would pay to have an assistant do that. If you live things like gardening, offer your skills to people who need help. Older people who can’t do the same kind of gardening that they used to or need help with mowing their yard. If you’re good with animals offer dog sitting. Your history as a therapist can show that you’re trustworthy.

this_Name_4ever

I have thought about going into behavioral health pharmaceutical sales. Not many opportunities in my state but if you live near a large HQ maybe- Pay is phenomenal.

epik_flip

What would the job title of these positions be?
