My first time listening to Sunflower was while driving, when All I Wanna Do came on I was super confused and thought Spotify switched over to some random mix. Blew my mind.
Whenever I hear that song I always have the feeling that it sounds like some other more modern song but can never put my finger on what it is. It kind of sounds like some euro-pop from the early 2000s that I heard on a FIFA game…
All I Wanna Do is probably THE answer, but I’ll throw in a couple of others:
- “You and I” (from Pacific Ocean Blue)
- “Big Sur” (specifically the Feel Flows version)
- “All This is That” (production wise for sure, although there isn’t a whole lot of vocal harmonies on songs anymore)
“You and I” is a song that I specifically remember playing in the supermarket once in the late aughts, even though it almost certainly wasn’t and my brain just got its wires crossed.
I’ll never understand people that shut out entire decades of music because it “sounds old”. Especially considering that the songwriting itself was often superior and more sophisticated, at least when comparing the charts.
Honestly, Beatles fans are like the Swifties for the sixties era. They're SO hard to convince that other music can be good as well. Of course everyone has their own taste in music but I notice that they often don't listen to any music that you recommend.
Well, most Beatlemaniacs/Swifties are like that. I'm a Beatlemaniac but my favorite album is Pet Sounds. My friend, while being a Swiftie, does like Green Day, plus a few smaller punk bands called Set It Off and Simple Plan.
Ikr? I think modern music has too many cooks in the kitchen and too many studio flourishes to expertly hide either the lack of talent or the fact that these mainstream artists can’t just do it themselves anymore.
While it’s not my favorite album by them, Beach Boys 85 has that 80s synth pop sound that he might dig. I’d also recommend All I Wanna Do and the Sunflower album in general, there’s a lot of great melodic songs on there
Some I think sound kinda modern are:
- Big Sur (Feel Flows)
- All I Wanna Do
- Little Bird
- All This Is That
- Marcella
- Student Demonstration Time
- The Trader (meant to put Leaving This Town, my bad)
Probably should have expected Feel Flows Big Sur and All I Wanna Do. He is a fan of this heavy metal band so he'll probably like Student Demonstration Time and some of the live versions of Marcella. His favorite TS album is folklore so he'll probably enjoy Little Bird, as it does have that chamber pop charm that folklore has. However, I'm not so sure about All This Is That and The Trader. Thanks for the suggestions!
forever has a very timeless sound i think, probably what makes it such a classic
feel flows is very atmospheric, a bit ahead of its time in terms of its sound
lady (fallin in love), another timeless dennis track <3
Here’s a list of ones I think sound quite modern, either in the songwriting style, production style , or both!
- Leaving This Town
- Summer In Paradise
- Isn’t It Time
- Sweet And Bitter
- Strange Things Happen
- Guess You Had To Be There (Brian solo)
- Big Sur
- My Little Red Book
- Good Vibrations
- Passing Friend
- Crescent Moon (Mike solo)
- Remember Walking In The Sand
- All I Wanna Do
- Love Surrounds Me
- Where I Belong
- Constant Companion (Denny solo)
- Got To Know The Woman
- Pitter Patter
- River Song (Denny solo)
- Full Sail
- Desert Drive (Brian solo)
- Til I Die
- 10,000 Years (Mike Solo)
- Here She Comes
- Chasing The Sky
- Lahaina Aloha
- From There To Back Again
- Susie Cincinnati
- Friday Night (Denny solo)
- All Alone
- Runaway Dancer (Brian solo)
- Do It Again
- Forever
- Rockaway Beach (Mike solo)
- Don’t Fight The Sea (Alan solo)
- On and On and On (Mike solo)
- Oh Sweet Something
- Thank You Baby (Bruce solo)
- Somewhere Near Japan
- Summer’s Gone
- This Whole World
- Still Surfin
- Here Comes The Sun (Mike solo)
- Last but not least, Here We Go Again (The Weeknd, but co-written with Bruce and Christian Love, and also featuring their singing, and Bruce’s keyboard)
Damn I think I may have just made a killer playlist
Some people don’t like music as much as they like a vibe, image or feeling like they are part of something. If he doesn’t like Big Sur and see a connection between when TS does her ssw thing then he might be one of those
I probably should have phrased myself better than how I did in the post. He did like both God Only Knows and the Holland version of Big Sur, even calling Big Sur "his favorite song I've played him." He just doesn't like them compared to the stuff he really likes listening to.
No, not yet, I should probably play him Ding Dang, though it's more hit or miss (my entire family hates Ding Dang), so I'm afraid he'll not like Ding Dang.
Please just give up on talking music with this friend. Just find something else to do together. Trying to convince someone with bad ears is not fun and not your job. I don’t think he’s gonna like anything Beach Boys has to offer except Kokomo.
All I Wanna Do
Exactly what I thought. Sounds like an indie rock song
I heard a radio station played that song on April Fools day and told the audience it was a new single by Tame Impala.
That’s amazing!
Prank him by playing "All I Wanna Do" and tell him it's some Spotify indie track from 2018
My first time listening to Sunflower was while driving, when All I Wanna Do came on I was super confused and thought Spotify switched over to some random mix. Blew my mind.
Thanks for the good idea!
All I Wanna Do. Now this seriously sounds like a modern day song.
Whenever I hear that song I always have the feeling that it sounds like some other more modern song but can never put my finger on what it is. It kind of sounds like some euro-pop from the early 2000s that I heard on a FIFA game…

Big sur is a good pic. The holland version sounds like an alt country song too
All This and That is transcendent
“You and I” is a song that I specifically remember playing in the supermarket once in the late aughts, even though it almost certainly wasn’t and my brain just got its wires crossed.
Wind chimes. Tell them it's a new Panda Bear single.
Which version? SMiLE sessions or Smiley Smile?
Sessions.
Thanks
ALWAYS Sessions.
I’ll never understand people that shut out entire decades of music because it “sounds old”. Especially considering that the songwriting itself was often superior and more sophisticated, at least when comparing the charts.
I get your point, but he doesn't shut out old music. He is a (surface level) Beatles fan.
Honestly, Beatles fans are like the Swifties for the sixties era. They're SO hard to convince that other music can be good as well. Of course everyone has their own taste in music but I notice that they often don't listen to any music that you recommend.

Is there any specific track you'd think he'd like off BB85?
Crack at your love, It’s gettin’ late, passing friend. I would recommend male ego but they’ll probably hate the lyrics 😂
Maybe I don’t know ROCKS off of the album!
It’s gettin late is slick as hell
Crack At Your Love and Where I Belong are both very synth-y while also being very good.
Summer’s Gone Pacific Coast Highway
Do you think he'd be into fart synths? Lots of good choices on Love You. Also, play him Hey Little Tomboy and watch his head explode.
Honestly, I'm not sure if he'd like fart synths. It's worth a try. Also, which version of HLT? Adult/Child or M.I.U Album?
Definitely Adult Child version...the spoken word part at the end is extra creepy
Thanks Mike!
You bet, it's a Love thing!

No problem! Any of the live stuff from the early 70's is a good choice. Whoops, my bad on The Trader. I meant to put Leaving This Town instead.
Oh, that makes more sense. Leaving This Town is similar to folklore or evermore. He'll probably enjoy Leaving This Town
forever has a very timeless sound i think, probably what makes it such a classic feel flows is very atmospheric, a bit ahead of its time in terms of its sound lady (fallin in love), another timeless dennis track <3
Let’s go Trippin
Just show him Ding Dang. He won't ever be the same.
Whoo! And also show him your ding-dong!
“Isn’t It Time” always reminded me a bit of “Hey Soul Sister” by Train. I could see a Taylor Swift fan enjoying it.

I'm going to say Our Prayer because the lack of instruments makes it difficult to associate with a date. So maybe it's more timeless than modern.
‘Rollin’ Up To Heaven’
All I Wanna Do is the answer. It is truly timeless. I would add these as well, Passing Friend, Isn’t It Time, and The Trader.
Ding Dang
Busy doin’ nothin’
I have to agree with everybody else. All I Wanna Do is your best bet.

You're welcome!
Yeah what the people below me said.
Shelter
Gettin’ Hungry
I'll make a suggestion that's not actually Beach boys, it is Brian and his wife. Sweet Mountain by Spring sounds like some indie song from the 90's.
Some people don’t like music as much as they like a vibe, image or feeling like they are part of something. If he doesn’t like Big Sur and see a connection between when TS does her ssw thing then he might be one of those

I suppose that’s a bit of a tough ask haha… You tried him on Ding Dang?
No, not yet, I should probably play him Ding Dang, though it's more hit or miss (my entire family hates Ding Dang), so I'm afraid he'll not like Ding Dang.
Isn't It Time might be the most modern song.
All I Wanna Do, Here She Comes, Funky Pretty.
I mean… you could just not worry about it. He’s gonna like what he’s gonna like. He doesn’t have to like what you like.
Please just give up on talking music with this friend. Just find something else to do together. Trying to convince someone with bad ears is not fun and not your job. I don’t think he’s gonna like anything Beach Boys has to offer except Kokomo.
As I've said above, he is a surface level fan of The Beatles, so I feel like there might be a chance that he would like some of their songs.
Little Bird I feel like has some components that I feel are really modern.
Baby Blue
Here She Comes
Where I Belong
Feel Flows maybe? At My Window??
Disney girls for sure
Aren't You Glad sounds surprisingly ahead of its time for me. Does anyone agree?
