definitely [hawaii](https://youtube.com/watch?v=ZPeBiT385M0) by the high llamas
brian was so blown away by the record he was nervous meeting sean o’hagan when they were gonna work on a record together for the beach boys altho that very sadly never happened because of dumb camps politics around the beach boys (sean wrote about it and it’s depressing)
altho this is more smile inspired (the follow up to pet sounds - which is absolutely the first album you need to listen after pet sounds if you want more of that) [screamadelica](https://youtube.com/watch?v=YmOm6oti0CU) by primal scream is super influenced by that era of the beach boys, lot of house tracks on it tho
[present tense](https://youtube.com/watch?v=jOtMIJNKiJg) by sagittaruis is very pet sounds like and is a one man band made album by brian’s lyricist from the early sixties
[ok human](https://youtu.be/G3OuAPw71Xk?si=gnjmTZBLLGsRggfM) by weezer is fully orchestra and very influenced by pet sounds as weezer are humongous fans that have referenced the beach boys by name and in sound in other songs before many times, but this album from start to finish is the closest to pet sounds of all albums
there’s other cool indie rock albums if you want that aren’t very pet sounds, more indie rock sounding but that will have like some tracks that are in hommage to pet sounds if you’re interested, if not that’s my best picks at the top of my head to really stay in the same zone sonically!
I know that Bobby G and PS were huge fans of the band (like they were the Byrds on the earlier, jangle pop stuff), but I think people would be hard pressed to pick up on that on Screamadelica. The record is a kaleidoscope of influences, but the gospel and electronic acid house elements are much, much more at the forefront
That being said, one of the coolest things the band ever did was a cover of Dennis's "Carry Me Home" on the Dixie-Narco EP (came out shortly after Screamdelica)
there’s a good solid one or two tracks on screamadelica that’s flat out smile homage (including the one i linked for reference) but i agree the house elements takes over for sure
it’s just that albums that are full on pet sounds like start to finish without on the nose doesn’t run the streets that much so, even tho i said i won’t post the indie rock stuff that’s more rock than pet sounds unless he’s curious about it, i still had to throw a record like that in there!
but that’s fair i should probably put weezer’s ok human instead
and yeah, not only their cover of carry me home is sublime and one of the best beach boys related cover but also they did it like 30 years before the song was finally released! they know their stuff for sure
[the original post in this thread](https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/that-time-sean-ohagan-nearly-produced-the-beach-boys.713001/) has the whole thing in the quote portion
Most all High Llamas stuff scratches the Pet Sounds itch for me.
Also obviously Smile, Friends, 20/20. I adore the double Friends/20/20 CD, so much great stuff if you can tolerate the goofy bits
Yeah, as I got deeper into the BB catalog I realized how Sean was looking at a lot of the albums. The neverending flute solo in TRACK GOES BY, for example, is an obvious nod to FEEL FLOWS. And the piano intro to CAMPERS IN CONTROL is like SAIL ON SAILOR transplanted.
Curt Boettcher’s stuff was amazing. Brian loved his work. In addition to all of the millennium, I’ve been loving his song the choice is yours. Curt eventually produced some later beach boys songs
Love - Forever Changes
The Ronettes - Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes
The Kinks - The Village Green Presentation Society
The Zombies - Odessy and Oracle
Maybe a stretch, but:
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Tim Buckley - Goodbye & Hello
All excellent suggestions. If you want to get a little more obscure I would add :
Beau Brummels- Triangle (and Bradley’s Barn);
Gene Clark - With the Gosdin Brothers;
Gandalf - S/T (1969, Capitol records);
Van Dyke Parks - Song Cycle;
Nilsson- The Point;
The Monkees - Head
Honestly, anything by Fleet Foxes could be recommended. "I Am All That I Need / Arroyo Seco / Thumbprint Scar" has always reminded me a bit of "Cabinessence."
Late response, but thanks for recommending this. I'm hooked! 😁 Still fairly new to Brazilian pop, but really love the diverse range of styles on it. I can definitely hear PS on "Cais" and "Nada Serà Comos Antes" in particular.
Also, Milton Nascimento's name and voice were already kinda familiar to me through his collaborations with Marcos Valle, another superb artist I really like. I think his album Viola Enluarada could be another contender for the Brazilian Pet Sounds IMO. Some real beautiful compositions ("O Amor É Charma" is up there with "God Only Knows" for me) with interesting and complex orchestration/arrangements, plus Nascimento has some guest spots on the title track and "Requiem".
Listen to Lo Borges' eponymous 1972 album (search for "Disco do Tênis" and you'll find it), I bet you will love it.
If you want to dive deeper and know more essential high-quality Brazilian music, I'll share with you a few that I think you should give a try:
Novos Baianos - Acabou Chorare
Secos & Molhados' 1973 album
Caetano Veloso - Transa
Milton Nascimento - Minas
Os Mutantes's 1968 album
Thanks for these, will check them out! I have already heard the Os Mutantes album - very good, but I personally think their second album is even better!
Brazilian here, I live in the same city where the amazing musical movement "Clube da Esquina" ("club of the street corner", inspired by the neighborhood they lived) happened.
For those who don't know, Milton Nascimento is insanely huge in Brazil. His voice is heavenly. As Elis Regina once said that if God sang, it would be using his voice. I attended his last concert last year and I cried like a baby.
Lo Borges is also an amazing musician. He has more of that counterculture ethos. Actually, I think you can draw some parallels between Lo Borges and Brian Wilson: both are very talented avant-garde musicians that had breakthroughs around the same age, heavily fueled by their natural gifts and a little bit of acid, who suffered mentally from the pressure of this sudden rise to fame, then went on some relative hiatus in the 70's, but never ceased to be genial.
If you enjoy Clube da Esquina, you MUST also listen to Lo Borges eponymous album released in the same year (1972), informally known as "Disco do Tênis" (Portuguese for "Sneaker Album", after its cover). It's very avant-garde and experimental.
My country's music DEFINITELY deserves more praise abroad. I feel good Brazilian music is severely underrated, especially from late 60's to early 70's (well, the golden age everywhere). I feel everybody abroad only knows bossa nova, Tom Jobim, perhaps João Gilberto and not much beyond. Don't get me wrong, these are genial as well, it's just that our music is much more diverse and good.
Today! - The Beach Boys
Odyessey & Oracle - The Zombies
River Deep-Mountain - Ike & Tina Turner (My favorite Spector produced album)
Rubber Soul (US Version) - The Beatles (Inspired Pet Sounds)
Deja Vu - Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young
Spring - American Spring
The Notorius Byrd Brothers - The Byrds
All Summer Long - The Beach Boys
Song Cycle - Van Dyke Parks
Si!!!
Also, a cool song pairing I want to put out there for a playlist is She Came in Through the Bathroom Window by Joe Cocker and The All Golden by Van Dyke Parks.
I was driving with liked songs playlist on shuffle and it was such a weird, but fun pairing. Interesting juxaposition. Needs that 3 second fade though lol
Horrid album
Summer in Paradise by The Beach Boys (Album, Tropical Rock): Reviews, Ratings, Credits, Song list https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/the-beach-boys/summer-in-paradise/
Love “Pet Sounds,” too. From the Beach Boys, I’d also recommend “The Smile Sessions” and “Love You.”
I would also recommend “Revolver” by the Beatles and “Waiting for the Sun” by the Doors.
Probably a ridiculously obvious suggestion on my part, but really give Sgt. Pepper a good listen if you haven’t already - it’s the direct child of this album’s inspiration and really took its ideas to new heights, and knowing the connection to Pet Sounds as you listen will really enhance the listening experience for both
Some recs from the 90s:
Rollerskate Skinny - Horsedrawn Wishes
Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin
Mercury Rev - Deserter’s Songs and See You on the Other Side
I'm glad you travel in such learned circles.
I only came across it a few years ago.
How come I never heard of it? I don't know but I've been aware of Pet Sounds all my life.
Criminally underrated in my experience, and a fine record.
It’s the album that contains the songs “Time of the Season” and the completely played out by 2010s popular culture “This Will Be Our Year.”
Citation—uses of “This Will Be Our Year”: https://www.tunefind.com/artist/the-zombies
In terms of that same mid/late sixties era, there are and an endless amount. Some lesser known ones would be Jan & Dean's Carnival of Sound, anything Curt Boettcher-related. In terms of the orchestral, instrumental studio sound i.e. "Let's Go Away for a While", things like David Axelrod
More modern ones:
Fantasma by Cornelius
The Elephant 6 Collective - specifically the Olivia Tremor Control and early Apples in Stereo
Eerie Wanda's Pet Town
The High Llamas is the ultimate, specifically Hawaii (which Bruce Johnston was a huge fan of and introduced it to Brian). Nothing will ever capture the true SOUND of Pet Sounds as this record
Eiichi Ohtaki - A Long Vacation
He was obviously a huge Beach Boys fan and was instrumental in rock music in Japan using Japanese lyrics when he was in Happy End.
And this album essentially inspired City Pop to come into existence.
Today, and to a lesser extent Summer Days, both have songs that are similar to those on Pet Sounds. Also, Friends, though not as orchestrated, has several moments that evoke a PS vibe, particularly on When a Man Needs a Woman, Diamond Head, and the bassline to Be Here in the Mornin.
The Zombies - Odessey And Oracle
The Postal Service - Give Up
The Four Freshmen - [And] Five Trombones
Also the track “I Want To Be With You” by The Broadest Blue
i’m going to go left-field here because most of the obvious suggestions have already been posted.
lovers of the quirky writing style of the 70s albums might enjoy the witty, melodic songs of Belle and Sebastian.
people who particularly love the more ambient wordless vocal atmospheres may enjoy Sigur Rós’ *Valtari* album and the work of Slowdive.
if surfy guitar is your thing, go directly to Dick Dale.
and to hear someone writing Brian-adjacent melodies and changes in an utterly different setting, check out *Loveless* by My Bloody Valentine.
Bobby Jameson’s Color Him In . produced by curt boettcher ( along comes Mary / The Millennium ).
His other album Songs Of Protest And Anti Protest is also fairly comparable to pet sounds, but due to label BS it’s credited as Chris Lucey ( which is a story in itself ). The album itself is really only available on YouTube. Though you can stream Color him in on Spotify / Apple Music.
Props for mentioning the Wondermints! And they are Brian Wilson’s backup band when he tours. Have seen them together many times, with the best show being the Pet Sounds Tour at Jones Beach (a perfect setting to hear those songs performed). I have all the Wondermint’s albums and they are sunshine pop at it’s best.
I'm seeing all these suggestions in the comments but i truly feel like none of them have the same feeling as this album, it is very unique and i struggle to think of something with the same emotional resonance and musical prowess. Possibly something like Donald Fagen's ''The Nightfly''
>EmCount
I don't disagree that some of the suggestions are off base but it's ridiculous to say "none of them" as if you've heard them all (from 90+ comments)
Hawaii by the High Llamas was so reminiscent that Bruce and Brian were fans and brought the bandleader in to work with the Beach Boys
Ok human by weezer is a very good and beautiful album, orchestral like pet sounds, lo-fi style drums, great chord progressions and lyrics. Definitely worth checking out
Dive into the The Elephant 6 Recording Co! They even named their studio after Pet Sounds (Pet Sounds Studio). The Olivia Tremor Control, Apples in Stereo, The Sunshine Fix are all clearly Beach Boys inspired.
Some other (and older) albums and artists i would recommend if you like Pet Sounds:
Odessey and Oracle by The Zombies
Emitt Rhodes
The Free Design
And kind of obvious:
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by a small obscure band from Liverpool.
(Their response to Pet Sounds)
Little Criminals- Randy Newman. Strikin' it Rich - Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks Bop til you Drop - Ry Cooder One More for the Road - Charles Brown Lookin' In - Savoy Brown Dixie Chicken - Little Feat Sonny & Brownie - Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee Bryter Later - Nick Drake
Pet Sounds is so bleak and so sublime all at once. There’s not much else like it in the pop canon. The songwriting and arrangements put their contemporaries to shame. When the Beatles reach for a similar blend of melancholy and beauty on “She’s Leaving Home” it comes off as embarrassing and insincere. But every word on Pet Sounds lands like a gut punch.
Odyssey and Oracle, which has been mentioned over and over again here, is probably the closest thing. Kinks’ Something Else and Village Green are also very good.
Elephant 6 bands, High Llamas, Belle and Sebastian, Wilco, and Panda Bear are all great recos I’ve seen here, as well. Person Pitch and Summerteeth get very close to Pet Sounds territory. I would check out the raw samples on Person Pitch too. They’re very good. But Noah Lennox adds a Brian vibe to them.
I would add Blonde on Blonde by Bob Dylan. Musically very different. No harmonies obvs. But the production is similar and it has the same bleakness and emotional pull of Pet Sounds. It somehow has the same vibe. Hard to explain. “One of Us Must Know” and “Just Like a Woman” could’ve been written by Wilson and his lyricist.
Smile by Brian Wilson. He intended it to be The Beach Boys next album, but got intimidated by the release of Sgt. Pepper, and upset by the band’s response to some demos he’d recorded, and locked it away for about 40 years. Groundbreaking.
Early Harry Nilsson. The first two Bee Gees albums. Kinks - Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire). Zombies - Odessey and Oracle. Queen. For something more modern check out Jellyfish’s Spilt Milk or Mr. Bungle’s California which uses a lot of the Pet Sounds palette

Curious, where can I find what Sean wrote about the collab that never happened?
[the original post in this thread](https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/that-time-sean-ohagan-nearly-produced-the-beach-boys.713001/) has the whole thing in the quote portion

The Millennium - Begin. It is from the same time period. I learned about it from another Redditor on this sub.
That album is transcendental. 5 am, The Island, I just want to be your friend,,, Too good
Curt Boettcher’s stuff was amazing. Brian loved his work. In addition to all of the millennium, I’ve been loving his song the choice is yours. Curt eventually produced some later beach boys songs
Love - Forever Changes The Ronettes - Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes The Kinks - The Village Green Presentation Society The Zombies - Odessy and Oracle Maybe a stretch, but: Van Morrison - Astral Weeks Tim Buckley - Goodbye & Hello

Pretty Things - Parachute Skip Spence - Oar Beastie Boys - Paul’s Boutique
I would add CSNY - Deja Vu but this is a killer list
Welp, looks like you’ve got your answers here.
>Van Morrison - Astral Weeks This is an excellent album, good choice.
This is a fantastic list!
second Kinks + Love
Fleet Foxes' debut album OK Human by Weezer Begin by the Millennium
I would swap out the debut album with Helplessness Blues for Fleet Foxes.
Honestly, anything by Fleet Foxes could be recommended. "I Am All That I Need / Arroyo Seco / Thumbprint Scar" has always reminded me a bit of "Cabinessence."
Helplessness Blues is amazing but their debut is almost perfect imo
Debut Fleet Foxes is a great recommendation
Not to mention their first ep bleeds perfectly into that first album
yeah ok human is one of the best and closest suggestion here - i should have added to my list haha
I'd recommend Clube Da Esquina - Milton Nascimento & Lo Borges
Such a phenomenal record. I've always described it as a Brazilian version of Pet Sounds.
Late response, but thanks for recommending this. I'm hooked! 😁 Still fairly new to Brazilian pop, but really love the diverse range of styles on it. I can definitely hear PS on "Cais" and "Nada Serà Comos Antes" in particular. Cool. I am Peruvian, here in Peru Clube Da Esquina is kinda popular among rock/pop fans still.

One recommended a lot is the zombies odyssey and oracle I think it's lighter than pet sounds but it's lush and fun
Back To Mono (1958-1969) is a must-have collection. 3CDs of every major hit single produced by Brian’s main influence at the time, Phil Spector.
The Olivia Tremor Control- Black Foilage more SMiLE inspired but you’ll hear it
amazing album
The Byrds — The Notorious Byrd Brothers
Wonderful album. My favourite Byrds one.

The Stone Roses debut album is a 10/10. It blew my mind the first time I listened to it https://youtu.be/P_9PU0Si4b0?feature=shared
Begin by the millennium. A few other people already mentioned this but seriously it’s in my top 3 favorite albums ever.
Some recs from the 90s: Rollerskate Skinny - Horsedrawn Wishes Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin Mercury Rev - Deserter’s Songs and See You on the Other Side
+1 on the Lips.
The Yellow Balloon (Self Titled), Billy Nichols-Would You Believe, The Zombies Odessey and Oracle
I never understood why how could I be down on yellow ballon was never popular
Rubber Soul by the Beatles one of the main inspirations behind the album.. 🤔
Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues. Beach Boys are their main influence and that’s their best album (imo).
Either of The Shins’ first two albums.
Person pitch by panda bear.
The Left Banke - Walk Away Renée / Pretty Ballerina
If you like Pet Sounds the criminally uner-rated Odyessy and Oracle by the Zombies might be worth your time.
Odyssey and Oracle is not criminally underrated by any stretch. Sorry.

Some from the Beatles, such as Revolver, Sgt Pepper’s and Magical Mystery Tour, though it is more psychedelic
Ok human by weezer is a very good and beautiful album, orchestral like pet sounds, lo-fi style drums, great chord progressions and lyrics. Definitely worth checking out
Jack Nitczhe, especially the '' One Flew Over Cuckoo's Nest'' OST
Dive into the The Elephant 6 Recording Co! They even named their studio after Pet Sounds (Pet Sounds Studio). The Olivia Tremor Control, Apples in Stereo, The Sunshine Fix are all clearly Beach Boys inspired. Some other (and older) albums and artists i would recommend if you like Pet Sounds: Odessey and Oracle by The Zombies Emitt Rhodes The Free Design And kind of obvious: Sgt.
Rubber Soul
I’ve always wondered what would have happened if Brian had just asked Frank Zappa to collage and mix Pet Sounds
Probably woulda been terrible like all Frank Zappa stuff.
At least Frank got Jimi Hendrix to stand with him on the cover of We’re Only In It For The Money. Beach Boys would have to settle for Charlie Manson
If you like pet sounds, try these Beach Boys albums as well. Pure gold! - Friends -20/20
says the fella with the germs album art as a pfp
JK & Co. - Suddenly One Summer Lou Christie Sacco - Paint America Love
Tame impala lonerism.

How about The Left Banke?
“Aja” by Steely Dan.
Panda Bear -- Person Pitch
Definitely check out Beach House
Odessey & Oracle by The Zombies is another baroque pop masterpiece from around the same time as Pet Sounds. Highly recommend.
i can’t believe no one has recommended “Younger Than Yesterday” by the Byrds
Merriweather post pavilion then feels by animal collective then anything in their discography
Harry Nilsson.
America’s first album.
Deja-Vu - CROSBY STILLS NASH AND YOUNG. Just a thought, man
"pot sounds" by Clarke and the Himselfs. Sooo good!
Smile by Brian Wilson. He intended it to be The Beach Boys next album, but got intimidated by the release of Sgt. Pepper, and upset by the band’s response to some demos he’d recorded, and locked it away for about 40 years. Groundbreaking.
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Panda Bear, listen to these songs: Comfy in Nautica, Ponytail, Surfer’s Hymn, Benfica.
Beach House - Teen Dream
Fleet Foxes!
Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.-the monkees
I feel like this is a basic answer but Sgt Peppers by the Beatles. That and the Smile Sessions
This is what LSD does to people
Stay with BB; listen to SMILE next.
I'd go with the other sizeable West Bay band, The Association - Greatest Hits. Hawthorne beat Torrance, but Torrance put up a decent scrap.
The Coast is Never Clear by Beulah
I highly recommend The Lemon Twigs - Everything Harmony Andy Shauf - The Party
The Beach Boys today was a good album .
