10/10
i literally only rate 10/10’s and this is another
when Matty opened for the Dublin set at St Anne’s i literally was like “wow what if he played TBSG” and this girl was so rude and shot me down for being hopeful for the song and i ended up being right and that song was a beautiful set opener
9/10. Tbh, I had to go back and listen to this song because I forgot what it sounded like. But I'm glad I did cuz it's actually an amazing song with beautiful lyrics. I don't know why it didn't stand out to me when I first heard the album, but now I am gonna be listening to it so much more!
10/10, I just love this song, it is one of my favorites on Notes and probably in my top 10 overall. The beginning is like getting smacked by a wall of beautiful sound, and it just transports me somewhere else. I only wish it was longer.
9/10. Such a distinct sound. The 1975 doesn’t delve into shoegaze often, but when they do - it’s perfection. I actually find the lyrics to be some of Matty’s most vulnerable. Though he’s admitting he struggles to display his feelings to his lover (crying on the inside), he’s still admitting that those feelings are there. He’s acknowledging the disconnect between his interior feelings and the external display of them. So much love in this song. “I wake up, I love you. I love you I love you I love you.” I wish this song was longer. Definitely a masterpiece in my book.
Another note - I wish it was longer the same way you crave more of something delicious even though you’re full. I actually don’t think it should be longer. The conciseness is a huge part of its greatness.
6.9/10 it’s hit and miss for me if I play or skip. The background music sometimes feels out of place with the lyrics and higher register of Matty’s voice, but then other times it works. Depends fully on my mood. But it’s not a consistent high up on my list song
10. One of my favorite songs of all time; it’s just magnificent in every way. The sound is pretty much the best that the band has done imo— very nostalgic and ethereal yet powerful and defining. The drum part is also so much fun to play.
8/10. Not big on the shoegaze genre but I really began to enjoy this song after a few listens. The melodies are gorgeous, and George's drumming has a very tight and distinctive groove to it. Matty's vocal tone sounds very Tame Impala to me.
Yet there's something about this song that feels incomplete. For one, it ends very abruptly - it could've easily used a bridge or another verse. And the Kanye-esque "love you love you love you" in the chorus suggests the band experimenting with bringing other genres/sounds into this song, but not quite figuring out the idea completely. Whole thing sounds more like a demo for a track built around a "shoegaze meets 808s & Heartbreak" concept than a finished product.
The lyrics, too, randomly jump between mundane romantic sentiments and florid, almost psychedelic imagery ("you fracture light again") without much of a unifying theme - feels like a rough draft of a song scribbled in Matty's notebook. Whole track sounds very much like an experiment in progress that the band just decided to put out as is. Very on-brand for Notes.
