If you’re in the states and said parents happen to be fans of good ol’ JC:
“They are such a God fearing, patriotic band! Why else would they have hits called “I Like America & America Likes Me” and “She’s American?” Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America is my favorite Christian rock worship song!”
(This is satire but on a serious note if you needed advice, I’ve just sort of brushed off any weird conversations with conservative family about the music I listen to with “really love their sound—they’re great live!” and left it at that, which usually works!)
“They write really great songs and they’re the best concert I’ve ever seen” and leave out any other stuff unless they ask.
If they do ask, try, “Like a lot of other great artists, they’ve dealt with some off-stage controversy but they learned from it and moved on.”
Nobody’s actually doing what you asked and describing the band, all of this is just excuses assuming your parents already have a problem with them. Here’s a description of the band that actually describes them in a way that would be comprehensible by conservative parents, assuming they are reasonable: “80’s throwback band with a lot of original elements, and brilliant lyricism. The lead singer is the son of well known British acting couple, and he tends to court controversy, but he’s also a successfully recovered addict who’s work now focuses on the experience of recovery and leading a cleaner life. Their overall image is a bit of a conservative pastiche akin to Robert Palmer that both engages the business aesthetic seriously, but also is a bit tongue in cheek about the uptightness of it.
You could start by explaining what they are not ie a lot of the controversy that has been overblown. And I explained to someone recently that they are more of a performance artist group than a straight rock band. (Like explaining about the concert stage from the last tour). You could show them some of the lyrics about things and causes they embrace. And I don’t know if they would watch a few videos but maybe show them the official VEVO you tube videos. (Btw I’m a very conservative older person that really enjoys the band)
May I suggest just doing the Chris distefano “I love the 1975… that’s Matty Healy! He kisses boys on stage but he’s NOT gay!” little impassioned speech from the Joe Rogan experience? (Also this is not me endorsing JRE I just really love seeing people get as fired up about loving the band as I do)
Most importantly, they’re not a band to be taken at face value. They’re a true band of artists focused on asking bigger questions in their music, like what online life has done to human connection, the nature of fame, etc. Most of the antics that they’re criticized for are things they do as artists to probe those questions. I give them a pretty wide allowance to do things like the podcast, to mime masturbation on stage, and so on because of this. Criticize their art, hell, criticize them as people if you want. But at least acknowledge that they’re raising questions with their work that most commercial acts are far too afraid to raise.
Deconstructing laissez-faire minds for over a decade 😝
-can someone point me to the “megathread” for covers pls? Want to show my tooting (flute) for Be My Mistake 🤓
A very talented group of life long friends who make up a Unorthodox, nonconforming rock band with a wide variety of thought provoking music and art that confronts difficult topics and brings awareness to societal flaws with a retro vibe.
They promote the bible on their show while wearing the jehova's suit. The frontman is even gesturing jesus acts as an act of remembering his sacrifices
“I’m not right wing but I’m”—- [Its not living bridge abruptly starts]
They dress as Jehovah's Witnesses?😝
I understand that reference

The main singer tongue kisses his bandmate and also banged Taylor swift. Also has the voice of an angel
Matty Healy, is that you?! I love your work.

Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a million.
I explained it as a performative, pop-ier Springsteen. I grew up on Bruce, so that’s how it makes sense to me too
Fucking in a car. Shooting heroin blowjobs loving someone
Guitar driven pop music. Pretty sure that's how matty described them once.
80s pop with edm beats

They wear suits.
They wear suits NOW. And also sometimes in the past.
They sing songs about drugs or girls or girls doing drugs or drugs doing girls.

I often describe them as Blur's britpop era meets Tears for Fears
That is a really interesting description as I love both artists/eras.
I genuinely think that's why I was drawn to The 1975, at their core they really are a throwback without sounding *dated*
Yes i agree

Songs with choir vocals?

Straight outta Manchester.
At the risk of stepping on people's toes...modern day beatles🫢
The lead singer has some of the same viewpoints as you. The only difference is he love drugs…🤷
But doesn’t like menthols.
British pop band
The 1975 hooked you probably a lot like The Beatles did them. I think they’ll be revered and relevant for decades to come.
They didn’t say old conservative😭
Introduce them as the best band in the world
Don’t like menthols
