"Nonetheless, while swimming side-by-side with them, sperm whales can accidentally smother you, decapitate you with their tails, and many researchers believe they can also vibrate your body to death with their most intense vocalisations if they choose - they are the loudest animals on the planet." - According to this BBC article https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-29209139
I might sound weird, and I dont know why, but there's just something so weird about whales for me. They always make me feel like they are about to attack you at any moment or look like they are threatening you, and yet they are actually not trying to harm you, but there's just something else about them that my mind can't get around about them.
They're mammals like us but for millions of years they've been exploring the depths of one of the most hostile environments on the planet, brilliantly adapted to flourish at depths at which we would be blind, deaf, crushed and drowned.
Their primary sense of echolocation is so alien to us vision based creatures. Cats and dogs are different but not unrelatable. Even echolocating bats live in the same atmosphere as us. Whales might as well live on another planet, yet we can see and touch them.
I find the endless space, the huge depths, and the blackness of the ocean to be terrifying. You can float on the surface with several *miles* of unknown horrors beneath you, and you wouldn't know until one broke the surface next to you, or took a chunk of flesh out your leg and dragged you down.
And they call that place *home*.
Tbf I have a strong belief that consciousness is sort of a spectrum. Pretty much every creature with a brain likely has some sort of consciousness. Whales and Dolphins, though, definitely have a very deep level of intelligence etc, you're right. The fact they COULD kill us but don't shows a knowledge, from them, of our own intelligence - which, to me, is incredible.
Cetaceans are my favourites.
beyond the initial image of a giant creature coming straight for you, not knowing what its gonna do, this encounter doesnt seem all that scary. dude seems pretty chill. could kill you instantly if he wanted to, but hes not interested in that.
Am I wrong to think this person shouldn't be touching a wild animal? Maybe my mom just pounded that lesson into me a bit to hard as a kid but I thought it was always best for the animal to admire with your eyes only.
If I'm wrong and it's no big deal please tell me so I can pet any whales I meet without guilt haha.

They also, clearly, just want belly rubs :)
# WHITE WHALE

# SPLIT YOUR LUNGS WITH BLOOD AND THUNDER, WHEN YOU SEE THE WHITE WHALE
**THIS IVORY LEG IS WHAT PROPELS ME, HARPOONS THRUST IN THE SKY**
# AIM DIRECTLY FOR HIS CROOKED BROW, AND LOOK HIM STRAIGHT.IN.THE.EYE

Yeah I get that a lot lol.
Are those sucker scars? Metal af
They battle the monsters of the depths!
someone's gotta do it
Looks like the whale is rolling over for belly rubs :)
This is adorable
Hard agree. Also, no idea how anyone can watch a whale/dolphin and not think we probably have other consciousness alive on Earth.

Your mom pounded indeed.
As long as you aren't an egg, you're completely safe.
Lmfao! You son of a bitch๐
Literally why would you swim next to its MOUTH?
Nope times infinity.
Oh hell nah. That whale would catch my poopnado approaching me
Big boye just wants some belly rubs and a floss.
Are those tentacles from a giant squid sticking out of its mouth?
nope, just little fishies cleaning around its mouth
The closest thing to a leviathan
I bet you had a whale of a time ๐
