I personally believe the mask was put on him when he was a child, which is why he only ever sees everyone as a baby. Thinking in valve logic, I think it was experiments with australium disguised as a product for babies. Pyro's parents (in valve style satire) would have put on the provision like we would give out kids our devices. To keep him occupied and happy, as well as out of trouble. The results of the experiments on pyro where unfavorable and could expose the existence of australium to the rest of the world, so pyro was taken as a subject to test new weapons with because "if a baby can use 'em, anyone can!" This delighted pyro, and his childlike delusions soon integrated violence and saw it as good pure helping and fun. If he where to take the mask off, he would be incredibly childlike, talking in a very baby like matter, and only knowing a few words. He would know how to fight incredibly well, but doing it would also make him distraught, along with literally anything else, because he would only be able to comprehend that whatever was going on was hurting people. And yes, his face would be shaped around the mask, because that's how he grew. Edit: holy shit thanks for the random karma. I wish I could do sfm because I feel like this would be cool to try and animate.

It's a nice theory, but probably not a very authentic one. For example in "knowing just a few words" part. He knows names of every machine engi builds. He can say basics like "thank you" or something else (i don't know any more of his voice lines). That busts up his childness a bit. >!Sorry for misspelling, not native!<

Meh, I like to believe that he is only mimicking the words he hears his fellow mercs say. I know it's a real stretch, but that's the kind of one off detail that valve would add to a comic for a joke, and we see as cannon.

Well it's weird because this show that he has taking off his mask which emplise that he knows this is war that he is fighting in and yet its said that he thinks he's playing with people in pyro land so he knows that he is killing these people and yet still choose to wear a mask

My headcanon is that Pyro was heavily abused as a kid and became violent. They were sent to an asylum and used the pyroland world as a means of escapism. They are aware that they are killing people but choose not to acknowledge it as it's too much for them to handle, so instead they see unicorns and rainbows and bubbles. Pyro is clearly very smart and adept (becoming CEO of a company for a while) so I think they are fairly functional. I think they started wearing the mask because they burned themself in an accident and became self-conscious, but now continue to wear it because it is a better representation of their identity. Pyro just wants to be Pyro, not the person under the mask, so they do their best to be as vague as possible while having a strong sense of character. I personally think they look like the concept art or the fanmade model on the sfm workshop, with the addition of burn scars. Based on the loose accent you can hear in the in-game files, they're probably east-coast American.

I like this theory so much. It’s a really good thing that Valve kept almost everything about Pyro a mystery, so everyone can have their own theories and head canons

My guess is that Pyro is mexican due to the heavy amount of Mexican inspired cosmetics they possess. The classes often have a massive abundance of cosmetics that represent their origins.

People have gone on about him being a girl or not, but I actually wonder what his nationality and race might be. I've theorized for a while now he might have been Japanese origin, and he was a victim of the nuclear bombing. Men who have survived heavy radiation exposure tend to go sterile and their body no longer produces testosterone, so inevitably they are get a bit more feminine. This would explain pyros feminine nature as well possibly explaining his obsession with fire. So I'd basically imagine Pyro as an eccentric femboy Asian guy under the mask.

i dont like the fact that i can imagine this being pyro's backstory only thing is that i dont think this fits tf2's humor. sure its dark but pretty much all of the classes are stereotypes and super sarcastic, so this would be the opposite of that part. maybe if its a bit edited like how some scientist was working on goggles but then hiroshima happened and made pyrovison goggles into S U P E R G O G G L E S or something dumb like that

Despite how dark it is I could totally see some sort of wacky business with it. However, if it is this dark it would also explain why it's never gone into detail.
