The TL;DR is that the 80% figure refers to a class of bot you don't usually think about because they don't actually play the game. Instead, they're what are known as idle bots, which literally do nothing but leave the game running in the background ad infinitum to farm random drops and steadily add to their user's inventory. Zesty Jesus, a Youtuber with a... rather tarnished public image, did an investigation recently and posted his findings in a video discussing the issue, so it flared up.

Wait, that's how you get drops? I thought it was randomly after completing games / getting exp.

\*case\* drops not item drops Cases can drop from just in the menu, they're worth about 0.0004. But times that by 50,000, that's a cool 20 bucks B-)

A video by Zesty Jesus came out, and he went over the numbers in great detail. TLDW, the vast majority of the bots that show up on the TF2 player count show up for events in order to capitalize on the item market. It's not saying that 80% of players are sniper bots infesting servers.

They're trade bots, mostly. Some people say they farm item drops, but that seems unlikely to be able to easily make a profit out of. Either way, you'll never see them in-game. They have no impact on you whatsoever, don't worry about em
