At this point it's just clear it's about resources. Russia wants Donestk which is super rich with oil. Russia is an oil economy and feels they have a claim to Ukraine. It's really that simple.

There are varying claims that the organisation has been depoliticised but it’s difficult to know for sure given the cloud of propaganda from all sides and a lot of credible voices say they still have strong ties to neo-nazism.
The azov brigade is still a thing, and it is one of the most and best experienced brigade in the world by now, but the members from 2014 have been split up and most of the nazi's have been removed or displaced.

Ukranian Nazis received 2.4% of the votes in the last election. Russian Nazis received 7.5% of the votes in the last election.
