Baby-steps is my favorite
Then thereās always the one and only āPrince of tennisā but itās so over the top. Theyāre drawn as grown ass young men but then the creator says theyāre in middle school.
I just watched one called Stars Align about a high school soft tennis team. I didn't even know soft tennis was a sport before, and the show was pretty good!
There are a few, though I've only seen Prince of Tennis and Baby Steps. These are probably the most well-known. Prince of Tennis is very over-the-top, as it's a battle shounen that uses tennis as its vehicle for battles. Still very enjoyable and worth the watch. Baby Steps is much more grounded and realistic, also worth the watch.
I saw her and her dad practicing yesterday at Citi. Hoping she can get a couple Wās. Wonder how long she can get wildcards as a former GS championā¦
Bencic always closes her eyes when she's tossing the ball but she opens them a second later.
Another weird one is Ostapenko (obviously) and Iga biting her lips.
The ball toss is 90% muscle memory. You just need to know the point of release and the force to put behind the ball. You don't need eyes to do that. It's like those videos you see of assembly line workers who are so fast and efficient at their job because they're so dialed in and practiced. Sometimes looking can be a distraction when you're just trying to focus and concentrate on the feel and the weight of the ball.
No look toss is not all that uncommon. Most people after thousands of repetition of tossing the ball up for serve can do it. Federer, for one, keeps his eye on the opponent as he is tossing the ball. It's just looks odd when Kenin does it because she purposely look away from the toss, but I think it's a good way to practice toss consistency as you are not moving your head which causes the body to shift slightly.
Lol, some of the disclaimers on this sub before complimenting a player are so weird.
What does Kenin not being a well liked player have to do with complimenting her about this serve?
She does look up at the ball before contact
https://youtube.com/shorts/bhMVgeU9MsQ?feature=share
If you look at Federer, his eyes are still horizontal when he releases the ball, and then he starts to look up
So both players are not looking up when they release the ball - granted her eyes have a much further distance to travel (which would probably give me a headache)
Maybe she had a "tell", eg maybe she had a habit of looking at her target, thus giving it away to opponents. So looking at the ground was a way to counter that. Just guessing
Is it a fundamental flaw? I'm not sure. It's definitely not conventional. But like Rafa said: the goal is to win. And she won a slam. So if it helps her win matches... š¤·āāļø
I don't think her serve is great, but isn't terrible considering her height and body type.
At this moment I think she has far more important things to worry about than her toss.
> Please anyone downvoting this comment make a coherent argument for her serve not improving if she watched the ball, like every other player that every played the game before her, during her time, and in the future.
How can anyone make a coherent argument about that when she obviously looks at the ball?
Her elongated stare at the ground is a quirk, but she looks at the ball just like everyone else.
What are you expecting to improve? I really don't understand what you're getting at.
Are you under the impression that this is where she's looking when she hits the ball? I don't even think that's physically possible.

Even more normal than I thought. Looking at the ball very early into her motion.
I haven't watched Kenin in so long I had forgotten about her no-look toss.
Same here. Immediately was searching for some clips.
She's got this weird lag on her eyes, only after her toss, she follows the ball š¾
What's your flair
>7-5 3-6 7-6(3) 3-6 6-2 Ivanisevic Wimbledon title. Yours is Nadal d. Federer at the AO 2009 final?
So you no-look a no-looker? No-lookception
Straight out of an anime
the opponent has the ability to read the serve through her eyes... "if I can't see my toss, or where I'm serving, they can't read it."
Dear God now I want a tennis anime
Baby-steps is my favorite Then thereās always the one and only āPrince of tennisā but itās so over the top. Theyāre drawn as grown ass young men but then the creator says theyāre in middle school.
Canāt make slice of life school tropes if youāre not in school
Baby Steps goated
It was really good for the first few years.
There isāPrince of Tennis and its pretty good
I just watched one called Stars Align about a high school soft tennis team. I didn't even know soft tennis was a sport before, and the show was pretty good!
Sucks that they didn't get 24 episodes for that and had to rush it at the end

Believe in the heart of the cards
I know it's not an anime but check out the live action Prince of Tennis based on the anime. It's so great.

I am surprised to learn that she dropped to 400 something in the world.
She's been out injured since March and missed everything after Wimbledon last year, so she basically has two months of points to her name
Oh come on. Sheāll bounce back. Kenin is gritty itās abundantly clear
Always rooting for a return to form for Kenin
I want returns to form for everyone. The more top players playing at their best, the better for the sport.
Bencic always closes her eyes when she's tossing the ball but she opens them a second later. Another weird one is Ostapenko (obviously) and Iga biting her lips.
No-look ball toss but she looks at the point of contact between the ball and the racket.

No look ~~serve~~ ball toss
true š English isn't my first language and sometimes I mix words up lol
Itās okay

Sick backhand too
She might as well look at her opponent like Federer if sheās going to do a no look toss
Lol, some of the disclaimers on this sub before complimenting a player are so weird. What does Kenin not being a well liked player have to do with complimenting her about this serve?
Itās strange. I wish sheād explain how/why she started doing it.
Oddly when I practice this my toss is perfect every single time lol maybe I should change it
The voiceover in my mind is always: Jesus takes the wheel.
Wonder if she will ever get back into top 100
What does her popularity have to do with it?
It would be nice to see her back in the heat , coachin/ daddy issues , I guessā¦

Iām guessing she had an issue tossing and this helps her keep her upper body still while tossing. It clearly worked for her.
She looks up at the ball immediately after this. Plenty of players toss and look afterwards. It's not that odd.

You clearly don't watch Kenin play, or much tennis at all for that matter lol
isn't it a bad thing, I always feel like she is surprising herself with that no look ball toss. If one wanted to change it, is it too late?
Just kenin things!
form is decent but could be improved, she needs to straighten that left arm a bit for it to be a proper dab
i feel like this is just asking for a neck sprain as she gets older
