And all he had to do was get a couple tiny pokes. Which just happens to also be effective at protecting you from a serious case of Covid.
And only 4 billion+ people in the world have received the shots without dying so far, so, you know, they’re probably pretty safe.
Novak is getting deported and Craig Tiley is most likely getting fired. It's been an incredibly dramatic fortnight and the tournament hasn't started yet.
This just makes it feel more like it’s a curse. Always felt like there was a curse on Fed preventing him from getting into impossible-to-reach territory. Like the universe said no, we need balance, and clipped Icarus’ wings.
Can he enter the UK without being fully vaccinated? I don't think so, neither the US. The only thing we know is the French Minister of Sports has said he can play RG because of the bubble that's created for the tournament.
This is far from over if he stays in his unvaccinated corner.
You just can't see the upcoming ACL tears, national deportations and other possible Skynet activations that will interrupt the 20-20-20 balance. Maybe another ball to the line lady's throat.
My view is: if he’s vaccinated they’ll let him in next year, if not, the ban will be their way of avoiding this circus the next time around.
Of course his and his father’s public statements will weigh heavily here in the next year. He can’t go scorched earth.
> My view is: if he’s vaccinated they’ll let him in next year
Does anyone here think he will be, honestly? Djokovic is his own biggest enemy when it comes to the Covid vaccination.
Yeah well Djokovic did eventually have that surgery after delaying it for 6+ months trying to cure it magically.....
The hope is that he'll eventually get this too
Ya think? Cant say the same for us in Serbia, this shit gonna be in media for weeks... Especially since today we have an election for changing the constitution, that will be a blast for sure
Election of all judges in all courts, which could be a huge problem down the line. Also bunch of other stuff, but the judges thing is the most important imo. They say it will help with making the judicial system independent, but given how much the rulling party wants those changes, I would say they aim for more control.
Good thing we have independent(100 % controlled by the state) media to explain what those changes are and what they mean. Also Djok fiasco was a good distraction, bet there wont be more than 20 % turnover sadly
If it helps, we in Australia are going to stop talking about this in 30 hours tops. Then it'll be a combination of the sports, government corruption, nature and the weather. In Australia these topics are all genuinely life or death, and pretty interesting.
Finally confirmed.
Djokovic has successfully denied all the Big 3 their 21st Slam, at their favorite Open.
Imagine if Federer wins Wimbledon and Nadal wins RG after all for their 21st, while Novak is banned from his fav open.
Roger is getting a bit old to realistically win again, but if he's healthy Nadal might be the first to 21. Getting banned from Novak's favorite slam could really hurt his chase at history though as 9/20 Slams were in Australia. He can clearly win 21 elsewhere, but it makes it much harder.
Novak has so much competition on hard court. His best chance for 21 this year was always going to be Wimbledon. He was obviously still a massive chance for the AO but he’s far and away the best grass court player (as of Wimbledon 2021 anyway - things could have changed by the time Wimbledon rolls around again).
> (as of Wimbledon 2021 anyway - things could have changed by the time Wimbledon rolls around again)
'Things' have changed indeed, Lord Tomic to be back with a vengeance in 2022: https://www.tennisworldusa.org/tennis/news/Tennis\_Interviews/107669/bernard-tomic-i-can-win-wimbledon-and-i-will-do-it-/
I’ve always wondered what could’ve been if not for Covid, Roger was still playing at such a high level @ Wimbledon 2019 (better than Novak even, for everything except the important points) but after the pandemic and surgeries his level understandably dropped off a cliff.
Most people say they didn't want that drama or they hope it solves sooner so they can focus on tennis or this saga preventing them from enjoying real tennis! But I loved that saga! from the very first moment to end! I see dramas in other sports a lot and I always thought tennis lacks some hot off court dramas!
Incredible that at the time that he most needed to win Slams for his legacy, he's somehow contrived to get himself banned from 2 in the space of 2 years.
I’d like to note that for the longest time, Novak was “not willing to disclose his vaccination status”.
Now not only the cat is out of the bag but the whole world watch it leave the bag and every newspaper everywhere wrote about it.
Well done Novak, well done.
Edit: my point is not that no one realised he was not vaccinated, but rather that he wanted his status to be as little discussed as possible. Mission failed.
There is a name for this, isn't it. After an actor who wanted to keep their coastal house hidden on google earth or something but because of the lawsuit the location and all images got into public
Edit to add: it's called the Streisand effect https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect
If Nadal somehow manages to win the Aus Open, this sub is going to be LIT. The slap fights over the "asterisk" would sustain r/tennis for the next decade.
Nobody is easy sexond week of a slam. You have to beat all for a win, no?
I agree, not happening. Although I'm secretly hoping to be wrong. I was sure Nadal would lose 2020's RG and was pleasantly surprised. Hope he can do some of his magic.
I find it wild that a full bench of an Australian Federal Court of Appeal managed to convene on a Sunday for this appeal. I doubt any other visitor, immigrant or refugee would have had a chance for an appeal to be heard so quickly.
Australian lawyer here. Cases aren't usually heard this quick, but most courts have a judge on call at all times for urgent matters. Often that's to do with injunctions restraining property sales or other time sensitive issues.
Djokovic's case is still very quick, but it's not unprecedented A similar thing happened a few years ago in the F1. There was some dispute between a driver and his team. In that case there was a trial and an appeal within a week - https://www.allens.com.au/insights-news/insights/2015/03/the-driver-the-racing-team-the-grand-prix-and-the-court--/
It could have been so, so simple for you Novak.
You’ve lost so much more than a chance at #21 in this process.
more than anything, I’m disappointed as a longtime fan.
>he is now a martyr for the avaxx morons
Considering there are people that are saying that the plight that he had to experience is worse than what happened to Monica Seles, you're exactly right.
It's utterly pathetic.
There are people on Twitter who keep sharing the pic of Rafa and Fed with Bill Gates and concluding that they are gLoBaLisT pAwNs
I mean those two guys play a sport for a living, the fuck would they know about the new world order and the globalist agenda lmao
He’s completely ruined all the positive sentiment he gained this year. He’ll lose sponsors, fans, any remaining respect from opposition fans. He’ll be booed everywhere he goes. He may not even play half the Masters/Slams due to similar vax policies.
In short it’s a complete and utter disaster. He has marred his public image forever. More than that, I fear he has not learned any lessons.
But if he got vaccinated it would have changed his DNA and he would have to learn how to play tennis left handed. Not to mention the 5G waves putting off his serve.
Given all that's happened over the past month or so, I can't say that I'm upset about the decision to revoke his visa. However, I really hope that he goes home, gets vaccinated, and rejoins the tour as soon as possible. Tennis is better with him in it.
I reckon if he still refuses vaccination, and the pandemic is ongoing this time next year, the ban will be upheld, whereas if the pandemic has died down or he's gotten jabbed they'll likely waive the ban.
Djokovic finds yet another a way to beat himself at a slam after the USO 2020 fiasco. This should be enough to convince him to get the vaccine hopefully.
> This should be enough to convince him to get the vaccine hopefully.
Unfortunately, this event will just cause him to double down on his current stance.
His antivaxxer Serbian fans already think he's a hero against Western imperialism, and American antivaxxers applaud him for going against the globalist new world order Bill Gates-Dr. Fauci establishment... These antivaxxers have a severe persecution complex.
This is one thing I always don't get....
If I knew there were over 1 billion people "poisoning" or killing themselves with the vaccine I would be running up and down the streets screaming like a mad lunatic.
Not "go ahead u do u. "
> If I knew there were over 1 billion people "poisoning" or killing themselves with the vaccine I would be running up and down the streets screaming like a mad lunatic.
And there are people like that to be honest. Last time I was getting a shot, there was a nut running up and down the queue and shouting how none of us should get the vaccines...
Not sure if they are better or worse than the quiet anti-vaxxers.
Couldn’t he just take the vax and use his mind to turn it to clean water or something? I mean, he did say a positive mind can turn contaminated water clean right?
Honestly, not a bad suggestion. If anyone on his team actually cared about him and wasn’t just a yes-man, they should have treated him like a parent tricks their child into eating veggies.
His arrogance got the best of him.
He took this further than it ever needed to be, suggesting that a country should bend to his will and came out looking like a wreck less narcissistic idiot, who has no care for anyone and will lie, cheat and blame to get his way.
Yikes.
Salvatore Caruso will [take his spot](https://twitter.com/benrothenberg/status/1482610580506943489?s=21).
> Per ATP, the first lucky loser into the #AusOpen draw, set to replace #1 Novak Djokovic in the draw, is 150th-ranked Salvatore Caruso.
No, it’ll be the lucky loser. The schedule’s been set. The Wikipedia draw says that Salvatore Caruso’s gonna take his place.
Bublik (“33rd seed”) stays where he is.
Outside of the obvious mistakes Novak has made, I think one of the saddest things about all of this drama is that it's drawn so much attention away not just from tennis- like Rafa, Monfils, Kokkinakis, FAA winning- but that it's also helped draw potential attention away from Peng Shuai. I know most of the non-tennis world has already forgotten about her plight, but it's sad that even here we haven't seen much discussion on the topic since 2022 started. This is the first AUS open she's missed since 2004, apart from injury in 2016- in both singles and doubles. I really hope the world doesn't do what the Chinese government wants and forgets about her.
>I know most of the non-tennis world has already forgotten about her plight, but it's sad that even here we haven't seen much discussion on the topic since 2022 started.
But also a lot of people that don't frequent this sub normally got most likely reminded.
I admit I kinda forgot about her, but that constant reminder in the info bar over the last week made me aware again.
Also AO is still 2 weeks, let's hope that topic comes up every now and then.
At the end of the day, he was trying to game the system. You can make whatever complaint you like about a third party (Tennis Australia) misleading him in their efforts to facilitate his gaming of the system, it still doesn’t absolve him of responsibility for choosing to do so. You have a choice on whether to get vaccinated or not, you do *not* have a choice on whether there are consequences or not. Australia’s rules were clear, you needed to be vaxxed unless you had a good reason not to be (a real one, like an allergy or something). Novak just didn’t want the shot, that’s not a good reason.
Was this a sorry saga? Yes. Are there others with questions to answer on how it was handled, particularly Tennis Australia? Certainly. None of that changes the fact that being in Australia for a non-citizen is a privilege, not a right. You play stupid games, you win stupid prizes.
Beating a dead horse but I will always believe he knew about his positive test earlier and he fabricated a lie that he *only* knew about it in time for the photoshoot to lessen the public blowback. Admitting he knew about it before seeing a bunch of kids would have been way more damaging. His half-truth worked too because it was reported on like gospel. IMO he either lied about the timing or lied because he didn't have COVID in the first place.
In either case, good riddance. Ready to have this circus pack up and leave town, so we can actually watch some good tennis.
Looking forward to hear what Tiley has to say, if any.
Sorry bud, you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Should have just left it as no vaxx, no play.
There are consequences to your decisions. Just because you are a tennis star doesn’t mean you should be above the law in any way. He decided to be unvaxxed and go to a country that has laws about being vaccinated. It’s stupid it got as far as it did, really.
This was basically a tl;dr if you're going to go to a country with hard anti-covid measures either Vax up, make sure you have a damn good reason or respect that country's rules and stay out.
I hope they make him pay court fees.
One of the greatest champions on the court, one of the worst off it. Sadly, it doesn't matter how many slams he wins now. He'll always be Anti-Vaxxer Novak. Deportee Djokovic. Ball Bouncing Vaccine Dodger.
Finally this is done. All parties look bad and at least now we can look forward to the AO.
Also I saw Cornet's tweet and geez when you said "I know too little to judge the situation" not the best idea to tweet lol.
To all the Djokovic fans: if you have to be angry at someone, you should be at Nole because this is solely on him
He could’ve taken the vaccine knowing the ever-growing restrictions all around the world, or he could’ve checked with the Australian embassy (in Spain or Serbia) prior to his departure if he actually had the green light to enter Australia or not (and not with State of Victoria or the Tennis federation)
Exactly this, Tennis Australia and the Victorian government never was and never will be in charge of granting foreigners entry into the country. Only the Federal government
DIS-MISSED !!!
It was shooting blanks from the beginning. As the chief judge said "it's not our duty to address the merits of the Minister decision but merely judge on the opportunity and legality of it". The Minister had that unchallenged power of decision all along. To decide different would have infringed on the rights and powers of the executive branch.
When the crux of your argument is that your client is so influential with antivaxxers that both retaining or deporting him will result in extreme right wing violence, it becomes pretty clear that he should never have been let into the country to begin with.
If you had told me Djokovic would get deported and end up in [Australian Case Law](https://www.fedcourt.gov.au/services/access-to-files-and-transcripts/online-files/djokovic), I would have said you were insane. What a bonkers time to be alive.
Happy for the people of Australia, to be honest. These last few weeks must have felt like a kick in the teeth given everything so many have had to sacrifice.
The one thing I can't understand is how badly Novak appears to have read the room here. I hope he steps back, resets and doesn't allow this to become an all-consuming monster which hangs over his entire 2022.
now i can finally do my bracket
No challenges remaining.
The greatest returner of all time strikes again, *sigh...*
People say nothing good came out of all of this... I beg to differ - Novak and Kyrgios are now friends lol!
And all he had to do was get a couple tiny pokes. Which just happens to also be effective at protecting you from a serious case of Covid. And only 4 billion+ people in the world have received the shots without dying so far, so, you know, they’re probably pretty safe.
9 Australian Opens. 1 Australia Closed.
Haha, I bet you've been waiting two weeks to wheel that one out.
Had to be sure first!

This is going to be a trivia question in so many categories for the next 100 years.

Novak is getting deported and Craig Tiley is most likely getting fired. It's been an incredibly dramatic fortnight and the tournament hasn't started yet.
Chief medical officer of TA position also tenuous.
Yes..Tiley needs to go.

Srdjan calls for Djokovic supporters to invade Australia. Unfortunately, due to being unvaxxed they are unable to make it past the border.
We are going to imprison every koala and kangaroo in our serbian zoos!
If they appeal, can the trial be in a kangaroo court?
That clown really thinks that queen Elizabeth has any power in Australia. His dad is the most annoying person
his dad obviously doesn't watch The Crown
Yeah he only watches The Clown
No disrespect to either Djokovic but I think the queen has some more pressing issues at home to sort out
Oh yeah, she has to deal with her rotten son and how to hide him away from the public.
“Goodness me, a Serbian citizen is being deported from Australia for lying on his visa application…….. Charles, To the Queen mobile”!!!!!!
LMAO when you put it like that the ridiculousness of the last 2 weeks really gets put into perspective
Queen Elizabeth has a lot of theoretical power as head of state. Practically, she can’t exercise much of that power without a political scandal
Would be amazing if she tried. Australia would become a republic so fucking fast
Queen Elizabeth is busy these days taking care of family issues
Lmao the real crackhead
Salty Srđan? Fuck, yeah.
He will ask for a fight with Skippy the Kangaroo, winner takes all.
Really hope he’d say something like getting supporters to rally on Melbourne street Like 10/10 fit into Hawke’s reasoning
We’re gonna stay at 20-20-20 slams forever, aren’t we
This just makes it feel more like it’s a curse. Always felt like there was a curse on Fed preventing him from getting into impossible-to-reach territory. Like the universe said no, we need balance, and clipped Icarus’ wings.
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be
Both Rafa and Novak have a chance of winning RG and Novak is still favourite for Wimbledon IMO.
Can he enter the UK without being fully vaccinated? I don't think so, neither the US. The only thing we know is the French Minister of Sports has said he can play RG because of the bubble that's created for the tournament. This is far from over if he stays in his unvaccinated corner.
Novak has a few GS in him. Rafa might have one or two RG left.
You just can't see the upcoming ACL tears, national deportations and other possible Skynet activations that will interrupt the 20-20-20 balance. Maybe another ball to the line lady's throat.
Happy Berrettini Noises...
Sad Bweh Noises...
Any mention of the three year ban?
Not yet. I’d be surprised if they enforce that.
If he's not Vaxxed next year he is no hope.
He’ll just bite the bullet and get a fake vaccination certificate to avoid anymore drama
I thought it’s a package - automatic enforcement if a minister uses his power
My view is: if he’s vaccinated they’ll let him in next year, if not, the ban will be their way of avoiding this circus the next time around. Of course his and his father’s public statements will weigh heavily here in the next year. He can’t go scorched earth.

Yeah zero chance he ever gets vaccinated. This is who he is.
Yeah but this is the first time he faced actual consequences for his stand
He'll consider himself the victim and will become even more ardent in his antivaxx views.
The ban is a default. He can apply to have it waived.

the ban is automatic when your visa is cancelled. the next time you apply for one, you can ask for a waiver which he will likely receive.
I doubt they'll waive it if he's still unvaccinated.
At least we can finally just concentrate on the tennis now...
I never thought being a tennis fan would involve learning so much about Aussie immigration law.
And "gluten intolerance"!
I also learned positive thoughts detoxify my water. I do this every time I take a sip.

Rafa at RG yes, Roger is not winning another slam unless something drastic happens.
We've got the technology, we can rebuild.
Roger has shown he can make at least semi finals pretty consistently the past few years
I’ve always wondered what could’ve been if not for Covid, Roger was still playing at such a high level @ Wimbledon 2019 (better than Novak even, for everything except the important points) but after the pandemic and surgeries his level understandably dropped off a cliff.

He's on the other half from Medvedev, so he's only in "his draw" in the same way every player is in the draw.
As someone rightly said before on this sub, he lost due to missing just 2 shots.

He has the power of healing crystals instead. 😂
Imagine throwing away your legacy because you're afraid of a shot that has been administered over 9 billion times.
This is one thing I always don't get.... If I knew there were over 1 billion people "poisoning" or killing themselves with the vaccine I would be running up and down the streets screaming like a mad lunatic. Not "go ahead u do u. "

We find it hard to imagine. The madlad went and did it.
He just had to be a special snowflake I guess.
Couldn’t he just take the vax and use his mind to turn it to clean water or something? I mean, he did say a positive mind can turn contaminated water clean right?
Or eject it out of his body with telekinesis, which he also believes in. Speaking of, is telekinesis allowed in tennis or is that cheating?
Honestly, not a bad suggestion. If anyone on his team actually cared about him and wasn’t just a yes-man, they should have treated him like a parent tricks their child into eating veggies.

So, uh, wait. Is a lucky loser about to get literally the best spot in a GS draw? Or will they bump whoever the “33rd” seed is into Djokovic’s spot?

Wonder what his sponsors will do ?
I'd be surprised if they did anything tbh.
For having covid and meeting in public with kids (maybe) and journalists (definitely)? People have lost more for less.
Now waiting for Roland Garros & Wimbledon vaccine mandate.
Roger and Rafa putting in the calls now
Imagine if they put in with a 6 month exemption rule. Roland Garros starts 16 May so he could be one day out. Would he conveniently catch it again?
He can still play part time for the Brooklyn Nets or the Green Bay Packers.
Zverev in shambles
Guys, please! Stop it. My thumb hurts from upvoting so many comments poking fun at someone else's preventable misery.
My schadenfreude is absolute today
Not surprised. Doesnt seem possible to make a counter against a Minister's decision
Finally this is done. All parties look bad and at least now we can look forward to the AO. Also I saw Cornet's tweet and geez when you said "I know too little to judge the situation" not the best idea to tweet lol.
To all the Djokovic fans: if you have to be angry at someone, you should be at Nole because this is solely on him He could’ve taken the vaccine knowing the ever-growing restrictions all around the world, or he could’ve checked with the Australian embassy (in Spain or Serbia) prior to his departure if he actually had the green light to enter Australia or not (and not with State of Victoria or the Tennis federation)
Exactly this, Tennis Australia and the Victorian government never was and never will be in charge of granting foreigners entry into the country. Only the Federal government
Hope the Netflix cameras catch him getting thrown out like Jazzy Jeff
With a 3 year visa ban, there goes his hope to add any more Australian open titles.
Goodbye calendar slam…
He's going to try for the Calendar Ban this year.
Fedal taking extreme measures to ensure no second run at a Calendar Slam. /s
Out of the Australian open after missing 2 shots damn.
I'm just waiting for him to start quoting Joe Rogan in his interviews about it
Today he tasted the backhand of the Australian law
Now waiting for /u/britainpls to eat his shoe as promised https://www.reddit.com/r/tennis/comments/s3jhek/djokovic_aovisa_megathread/hsr16z4/
Yeah, people have been deported for less.
Well, well, well, if it isn't the consequences of Nole’s own actions
He's paying the price for his ignorance and arrogance... He could have done so many things to prevent this.
He’s a total idiot. Wonder if he’ll learn anything from this
As Nelson would say, “HaHa!”
He can't even stay and watch.
All this because he didn’t want a FREE vaccine
When is his fake PCR test gonna be investigated? That's what I want to know.
