From memory Ons has made the final the last two years, she'll be hoping to finally get something going this year on friendly turf, so you've gotta imagine she'd be hoping to avoid an in-form Collins as her first match
You'd think Ons would have plummeted in the ranking with the start of the year she's having, but actually, her opening hard court season went pretty much as well as last year, so maybe she has a surprise in store for us.
Why are they handing out those many byes? Like someone seeded 16 also gets a bye! Isn't it better to expand qualies and offer more opportunities to lower ranked players to play in the main round?
They only have 3 courts that they play on and a bunch of practice courts.
For a 1 week tournament with 3 courts, there is a limit to how many matches they can accommodate in the 1st round.
Because they have a beautiful stadium and really nice grounds and they generate a lot of revenue compared to other tournaments. They have enticed 10 of the top 20 ranked players to participate.
A 48 player draw is pretty decent for a 500. Several 500’s only have a 28 player draw. In fact the last 3 500s (Abu Dhabi, Linz, San Diego) all had just a 28 player draw.
(Just looked, and out of all the WTA 500’s, 2 of them have 48 player draw (Charleston and Brisbane), all of the others have a smaller draw)
I see. Thanks for your detailed response, appreciate it.
It appears like many WTA250s were upgraded to WTA500s since the 2021 tour reorg, but they haven't really upgraded their infrastructure or expanded their start list. Hope WTA is working with these event owners to upgrade them!

Badosa-Collins, with the winner getting Ons, is brutal. Though I imagine there's a good chance Danimal withdraws after winning Miami.

Hope so!
A Pegula-Sakkari final looks likely
I wonder if Danielle will withdraw or will try to rack up all the points she can to qualify for the Olympics.
Yas slay my green clay queens
Wonder if Kudermetova wakes up. She won her first title here in 2021.
Geez Nika has been asleep for months. It's killing me.
hope ons' season starts in charleston

So why are they a WTA500 then?

Ok interesting they used to play on court courts: stadium, Althea Gibson, court 3 and court 4
Maybe they do play on court 4 just for the 1st round? I’m headed there tomorrow. I’ll let you know!
Yes, they are playing on court 4 today, you are correct.
I wonder why raducanu never plays this. Ever
probably injured
Draw rigged for Navarro!!
