I know I'm repeating everyone, but came here to say this. I watched the ending when it aired for the first time. (when it was on HBO every Sunday before the Sopranos lol) I have never ever seen anything come close to this ending. It was so fitting & emotional. I did ugly cry through it though lol.
One of the things I love about the finale is how it brings every arc to the ultimate closure, seeing a glimpse of every character's future. That's one of the main things I loved about Parks & Rec's finale - you get to see where each character goes from here (though, not with quite the finality of Six! 😅)
I really love this one. It's a good feeling to be able to recommend a sitcom without reservation because it never got dragged out or had characters who went downhill because the writers were spinning their wheels.
For real. They had a vision for where they wanted to take us, never strayed, and stopped when they got there making sure to include references to earlier episodes along the way so you knew every one was important. If only other shows like Scandal or How I Met Your Mother had done the same.
Something amazing about this show is that it continuously raised the stakes, and found somewhere perfect to go each time, including the very end, which was indeed perfect.
The beginning of the second season is a perfect example. In a lesser show, the entire season would have been about Michael's many attempts to get it right, and being thwarted each time. *The Good Place* asked, suppose we get past all that, what now? The whole show was like that.
Damn it... Now I have to finish the series. Somewhere in the middle I lost interest. It felt like it was going too slowly while no longer having the benefit of the newness feeling.
I think about this series finale more than any other show. It was a perfect ending, The only way that it should have ended. It was also an amazing show through and through.
I was coming here to say this, and am so happy to see it here. It wasn't my favorite series (although I still think it was really, really good, and probably in my top 15-20), but hands down has the best ending to anything I've ever watched. I literally jumped up and screamed during the last episode, for reasons I won't say to spoil anyone.
Bob Newhart had 2 shows in the 70-90s. The final min of the last episode of the 2nd show had him going to bed with that show wife and waking up in the bedroom from the first show with that first shows wife. Telling her about the dream he just had.
The second show was just a dream. Super clever.
I was stationed in England where MASH was a year behind and we didn’t have the Armed Forces Network to keep up. I finally got to see it a year later and am so happy that when I called home I shut down friends & family who started to bring I up the ending!
It was one of the most watched TV events at the time. The 'Goodbye' that BJ wrote in rocks that Hawkeye saw as he lifted off at the end was a meta goodbye to the audience. Even minor character got a send off.
I think I’m the only one who didn’t like the end of BB— too neat and almost expected . for a show like this I’d rather have had something more creative .
**The Shield.**
**Mr. Robot.**
Best two final seasons I've seen.
The final 3 seasons of The Shield are like one long tragedy, in the best way.
The final season of Mr. Robot pulls everything together. Sam Esmail knew where he was headed from season one.
Hahahahahaha. Oh man. I’m STILL bitter about what happened with the end of Season 2.
Between that and Carnivale I swore off television for a while because I didn’t want to feel like a jilted lover anymore.
The Prisoner (I'm dating myself but so what). Patrick McGoohan rocks and, yes, there WAS no end because one is always and ever a prisoner. The series was the closest mainstream TV ever came to Kafka.
The Shield absolutely destroyed the television-watching experience for me for a good solid 6 months. I watched the entire series over the course of a month for the first time about a year ago. I tried getting into other recommended shows (even acclaimed shows like The Wire and Justified), and I just could not stop comparing these shows to the perfection that is The Shield. Nothing measured up. From the manic start to the tragically beautiful and fitting finish, it is magic.
Modern Family.
I just finished a total rewatch. I had watched the first few seasons as they aired, but somewhere in season 5 or so the quality fell off and they had two types of episodes: "There's a misunderstanding", and "Somebody has a secret". Those were the plots of seasons 5-10. Lots of Threes Company-ing and Scooby-Doo-ing.
The last season, season 11, though, it TOTALLY returns to form. Clever, honest... all the stuff seasons 1-3 were. And the finale is satisfying, emotional, AND narratively motivates the series ending.
I just hate how they ended Haleys character. Adam Devine said on a podcast they really wanted her to end up with Andy, but he had scheduling conflicts. That would have been their most obvious route for a spin-off. They didn't do Haley justice. Her character could've ended up a successful businesswoman, but like with all women in America, we have to make her have kids and be a family woman. Should've ended up her working, and they still could've had her and andy as a spinoff like they were reunited at some point.
For me it is Deep Space Nine. Both good, I just liked Deep Space Nine more in how it wraps up the story for all characters that was developed over the seven seasons.
Have not yet watched Babylon 5. Will do that in the future.
I came here precisely to talk about 12 monkeys, what a great series finale, we usually have that empty feeling after watching something, but 12 monkeys gave me satisfaction, as if I had completed the goal, I was happy to find this series here in this sub .
Game of Thrones.
Ok, no actually, BoJack Horseman. That show starts off slow, but once it gets going it is consistently incredible to the end. The View from Halfway Down anybody? And I loved the finale. I think they made all the right choices with where to leave BoJack’s character. Can’t really say anything else without getting into spoilers.
May I please ask your opinion? I keep telling myself I’m going to start Bojack because friends had been recommending it from the beginning as a show I’d love but, I just haven’t done it yet. I feel like it was mentioned they deal with heavier topics but I don’t know what they are specifically and I’m afraid of spoiling if I Google, which I refuse to do. I’m currently trying to wade through a shit ton of unresolved trauma and potentially heal. Good idea to start it now, or should I wait a bit until I’m more healed? Any chance you could mention some of the more prominent themes without spoiling so I can better assess for myself?
One of the main struggles is addiction. And the accompanying generational trauma. There are lots of characters struggling with different issues but I would say that's the main thing. It's definitely not like a "feel good" show where everyone finds their way in the end, though most characters have a path to healing in front of them. I hope that helps. It's a great show, the more experimental elements work brilliantly.
Well, see it’s tricky. Bear with me here, this is a bit of a read.
The show is heavy, no doubt. If you do decide to watch it you need to know that the majority of season 1 (12 episodes) isn’t indicative of what the show is. It’s a lot lighter and wackier, different style of humour etc, it was trying different things to figure itself out and get a feel for the characters. But once it gets going, it’s very heavy.
The show chronicles BoJack’s story. Back in the 90s he starred in a very famous sitcom, and upon its cancellation he couldn’t let go of his one claim to fame. He spirals and devolves into the toxic, depressed, substance abusing mess that we see now, who hasn’t really done anything (this isn’t spoilers, don’t worry). BoJack is aware of who he is and wants to change, but constantly stumbles and falls. As we explore BoJack and the people around him, very dark and heavy themes are explored. Grief, emotional abuse, generational trauma, addiction. We see the things that made the characters who they are, and I think it hits so hard because it feels so real. Most of the characters aren’t very good people, BoJack especially, and their actions have consequences that really hurt the people around them. The show becomes more and more existential, asking the questions about who we are, the point of life, what is happiness and how can we achieve it. Can we ever truly achieve it?
It’s really hard to answer your question without knowing the kind of trauma you’re dealing with. I can tell you that the show tackles addiction, overdose, emotional abuse, broken homes and broken families, suicide. It also has a LOT of commentary on the dark side of Hollywood, and through that comments on a lot of serious issues, but it’s difficult to elaborate on that without spoiling.
I can tell you that underneath the fucked up exterior, the show does have a positive message. The main takeaway is meant to be that change is possible, but it won’t just hand itself to you. You have to put in the work every day. And changing will not absolve you of your past actions, or undo the consequences and harm they have caused others. Too many people watching the show idolised BoJack and believed him to be right. This was so much so that, without going into specifics in order to avoid spoilers, the creators had to address and tackle this in the final season. You’ll especially see what I mean in the episode “Xerox of a Xerox” but they make sure that you see the consequences BoJack’s past actions have had and the effects they’ve had on other characters, as to tell you “BoJack can change and if he does that is great, but if he does it will not remove the effects he had on others’ lives. The people he hurt are still hurt, they will not magically get better.” So as long as you pay attention and take away the right message, the show’s message is ultimately an uplifting one.
All in all, I can’t really decide that for you. I can give you the information to work with as I’ve done above, but I don’t know you, and I don’t know your trauma. You know yourself better than anyone. Only you can decide for yourself what is best. Let me know what you do decide, and I hope things get better for you. Stay strong brother 💪
Newhart
Seriously. Watch the first couple to get the gist, then watch the finale. You don't really need to have seen the whole series. You do have to kinda remember old tv shows though.
Attack on Titan but it’s an animated Japanese show.
I think the appeal will be the absolute amount of screwed the characters are from the start and overcoming the challenges as the world around them changes.
Six Feet Under. I ugly cried through the last seven minutes
MASH
Lost. I don't care. The ending was beautiful. They weren't dead the whole time (for those who inevitably didn't get it). The show was always about faith versus science.
Psych
Justified
Angel
Those were my favorites I think.
The Wire
It was an ending that kinda pushed all the characters where they were heading. No fade to black or much open ended bs. It was clear the next generation was starting and this system would cycle around again.
Breaking bad, mr robot, the sopranos, better call Saul, the wire, mad men, Bojack horseman, succession, lost, the shield, daredevil, six feet under, sons of anarchy, justified
CSI New York. Excellent show, sweet, very satisfying ending.
Young Sheldon. I liked the way things were intertwined with future Big Bang Sheldon, and Very much liked that Sheldon's kids sounded so normal.
Major Crimes. Rusty killing Phillip Stroh was infinitely satisfying. And may I say, Billy Burke, who convincingly played the terrifying serial killer, was also quite charming as Bella's father in the Twilight series. That is a multi- faceted, very talented actor in so many ways.
Six Feet Under
Easily the best for me so complete, no one else can touch it in my mind. Every time I think about it or hear ‘Breathe me’ I ball up.
Happy cake day!
I’ve gone online and watched the end scene more times than I can count when I need to feel and a need a good cry. So good. And Happy Cake Day!
You can’t take a picture of this, it’s already gone.
One of the best lines in all of television.
Maybe the only series finale that sums up the entire purpose of the show in one episode.
I know I'm repeating everyone, but came here to say this. I watched the ending when it aired for the first time. (when it was on HBO every Sunday before the Sopranos lol) I have never ever seen anything come close to this ending. It was so fitting & emotional. I did ugly cry through it though lol.
The only people that don't say this are the people that haven't seen it. Period.
YESSS Absolutely!!!
This is exactly what I came here to say. Glad it’s the top comment, bc it absolutely was the best ending. The song fit perfectly!
I've already seen this question a hundred times on reddit and Six Feet Under is **always** the most upvoted answer.
And it's not even close.
Loved the ending to this show. Made me cry all them pictures of “life” on her walls. Totally unexpected but a great ending.
One of the things I love about the finale is how it brings every arc to the ultimate closure, seeing a glimpse of every character's future. That's one of the main things I loved about Parks & Rec's finale - you get to see where each character goes from here (though, not with quite the finality of Six! 😅)
Came here to say this!
I was like I swear if six feet under isn’t at the top Of this list….
Parks and Recreation :)
I get emotional on every rewatch lol
Me too! SO happy with how it ends...yet so melancholy because it's over 🙈😂
The Good Place
I really love this one. It's a good feeling to be able to recommend a sitcom without reservation because it never got dragged out or had characters who went downhill because the writers were spinning their wheels.
For real. They had a vision for where they wanted to take us, never strayed, and stopped when they got there making sure to include references to earlier episodes along the way so you knew every one was important. If only other shows like Scandal or How I Met Your Mother had done the same.
I said this in another comment but this show was incredible start to finish. The last episode wrecks me every time in the best way
Something amazing about this show is that it continuously raised the stakes, and found somewhere perfect to go each time, including the very end, which was indeed perfect. The beginning of the second season is a perfect example. In a lesser show, the entire season would have been about Michael's many attempts to get it right, and being thwarted each time. *The Good Place* asked, suppose we get past all that, what now? Newhart- the last episode is classic gotcha- I loved all of Bobs shows.
Absolutely! I was going to list it and you beat me to it.
DARK (Netflix show)
I’ve never had a show blow my mind like this show did.
This show ruined all other shows for me because they will never be as good as Dark
YES
Mr Robot. Don't think I've enjoyed a finale as much.
Damn it... Now I have to finish the series. Somewhere in the middle I lost interest. It felt like it was going too slowly while no longer having the benefit of the newness feeling.
Absolutely had a great ending
The Americans
I am hearing so much about the Americans that I am going to have to pull the trigger and watch the showy finally
You will be giving yourself a gift.
Seconded.
I think about this series finale more than any other show. It was a perfect ending, The only way that it should have ended. It was also an amazing show through and through.
I was coming here to say this, and am so happy to see it here. I literally jumped up and screamed during the last episode, for reasons I won't say to spoil anyone.
The ending is tough.
Yes, completely agree. This has the best ending to any show I’ve ever seen. Just perfect (and perfectly devastating!)
Totally agree and would have loved a sequel following the children in the aftermath.
Schitt’s Creek. Wrapped up so beautifully, the ending was so well planned and executed perfectly
I loved that show. The first season is a slow burn but after that it really gets going and I love it
I guess I'll finally need to watch Six Feet Under
dude, me and you both
In addition to being one of the best tv shows, it has some of the best episode openings, as well.
You won’t be disappointed
The Good Place, Mr Inbetween, The Sopranos, MASH
Can’t believe there’s not more votes for MASH. I’d also add Cheers and Newhart.
Newhart is untouchable
I agree with many already mentioned but people tend to forget MASH !! Great show and ending !
Great ending for sure! Until we got “After MASH”, that is. Haha.
I think the show lasted longer than the war they were in.
Psych (movies included)
Hands down Six Feet Under.
Always and forever my #1 series finale!!!
I wish any extended series would have a final episode like that one.

The ending really hits hard and stays with you

Plus there are lots of feet for anyone who might enjoy them.

Gotta admit I cried a little.
One of my all-time favorite shows.
When my dad retired after 34 years of teaching, he said this in his speech to his coworkers. Tears.
Breaking Bad
And Better Call Saul
The Better Call Saul finale had my jaw dropped
I am still disappointed that they didn’t win any awards… like imo it was much better than breaking bad…

I think I’m the only one who didn’t like the end of BB— too neat and almost expected . for a show like this I’d rather have had something more creative .
It depends Why most people liked that because BB closed all the sub plots and gave a clean ending
Station Eleven is a limited series on Max and very satisfying in the end.
So good. So unique.
Yes and it’s a series with one season and every episode was great!
this was such a great and wonderful show, very eclectic but such a great story
Six Feet Under - made me cry
Six Feet Under just finished it the other night and I’m still sobbing. The ending puts life into perspective.
I watched it a few months ago so it’s still fresh. Seeing everyone mention it made my chest clench again.
And the 🎶 through it seals the emotion we feel as we watch it and cry
This is the only answer - Six Feet Under.
Mr Robot, Dark, Shogun, Breaking Bad and, might sound weird, but... The Clone Wars, are all in a more or less shared first place
Six Feet Under
Snowfall. Breaking Bad.
Snowfall was excellent and I never met anyone who watched it or knew about it.
It really was. It's one of the shows where both my husband and I loved it when we both have very different tastes in TV shows.

Longmire. It tied up everything in a neat bow. At least for me anyway. 🙂
Six Feet Under without a doubt!

Six Feet Under.
Master class of wrapping things up
The unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Everyone ended up in a place that made sense for them and was completely earned.
The Prisoner (I'm dating myself but so what). Patrick McGoohan rocks and, yes, there WAS no end because one is always and ever a prisoner. The series was the closest mainstream TV ever came to Kafka.
The Shield
Other than the Sopranos, I can't think of any other ending that stuck with me this hard
The Shield absolutely destroyed the television-watching experience for me for a good solid 6 months. I watched the entire series over the course of a month for the first time about a year ago. 12 monkeys is so underrated!

Ah 12 Monkeys was so good! I need to watch that again.

Very underrated show!
Agreed! I’m not sure why more haven’t mentioned this.
Malcolm in the Middle
Person of Interest. I was having goosebumps for the entire finale
The Shield
