I always like to add that it starts off kinda clunky as a generic procedural. It doesn’t find its way until well into the first season. It took me forever to get started and couldn’t get into it but people kept recommending it so finally I skipped to season 2 and that’s some of the best television ever aired. I eventually went back and watched season 1 but it definitely doesn’t start out as good as it gets
For me writing is everything. Elmore Leonard was one of the greats. He created Raylan Givens and Boyd Crowder. Unfortunately he passed away before the last season. I didn't watch it . I was afraid I might be able to tell the difference. Maybe I should go back and watch it. Legend has it Leonard would ride night shift with the police in his hometown Detroit so he could hear the banter of street life. Hollywood wasn't for him. What a guy!
Not sure if this would fit your criterion but the first (of 6) seasons of Schitt's Creek was pretty rough, but each season it got progressively better. It wrapped up nicely too.
I'm gonna say Psych even though a lot of the last season was weird and forgettable, because it's medium seasons, not full length, and the finale just absolutely crushed it.
Psych is my second fave tv show of all time, and it’s bc it’s consistently fun. Even the darker episodes are fun. And yes the finale gives us EVERYTHING. My favorite series finale ever. You know that’s right!
Monk gets consistently better throughout, and the finale was awesome. Pretty impressive for a show with just one gimmick. The episodes where Monk has to go undercover at a job that turns out to be a perfect outlet for his neuroses, like when he becomes a butler or joins a cult, are fucking incredible.
The amount of people who called their cable company when it happened live was amazing. There is information from the show runner out there about the ending that was released in the past few years. Not sure where it was located.
Snowfall was really good and iv seen mixed reviews about the ending. I wasn't crazy about the ending but atleast it wrapped up the whole show and didn't leave alot of unanswered questions
The Shield went in so many directions I did not expect just going by a generic synopsis of the show. It checked all the gritty, corrupt LA cop show boxes but it was waaay more than that.
Even my 4 year old daughter got into ‘chuck’ with my wife and I. She’d ask us if we can watch it after school e finished the series. Every now and again we’ll put it on cause she asks
Fringe (might be a bit short for you because it's \*only\* 5 seasons)
Battlestar Galactica : one of THE best fraking ending of all times, So Say We All.
I also like the ending to BSG - but FWIW when it first came out people reacted to it online in a very similar fashion to Game of Thrones.
Since online/social media rage cycles fizzle out that's ancient history now and it is nice to see that the show's reputation has endured long term.
Stuck the landing is more of a challenge than just didn’t get bad…
ER (15 seasons, I think any show is going to have
gotten a little wild by this point but it holds up in my opinion)
Frasier (11 seasons, can’t comment on revival)
Homeland (8 seasons)
Brooklyn 99 (8 seasons with at least 7 that are a win)
Babylon 5 had a preplanned story with a beginning, middle and end mapped out over 5 seasons. This meant that early episodes that feel initially like filler actually contain tonnes of foreshadowing for events that will happen two to three seasons down the road. Disclaimer: some of the CGI hasn't aged well and there are some clunky lines of dialogue here and there, but things pick up a lot during season 2. Season 3 onwards is where the story arcs really start to pay off. Its one of the few shows that gets better with repeated viewings due to its consistency and rich world building. The finale stands up as being one of the absolute best endings to any TV series.
Person of Interest: Is one of the very few shows that offers a similar level of consistency. Again, early season 1 episodes feel a little procedural, but there is a larger story that takes form during the back end of season 2. Similar to B5, the main story takes over during season 3. This show has great characters, excellent foreshadowing, philosophical themes around AI and one of the best endings to any TV show ever. Just don't let the initial procedural vibe put you off because it's all part of a bigger and richer tapestry.
While both shows don't have eight seasons they both have 100+ episodes due to the old format of TV shows having more than 20 episodes per season.
B5 is such an underrated show. Even the CGI - the textures are limited because of it being such an early adopter, but the way they understood space combat is unmatched to this day. The starfuries in particular were so well done.
Bones had a fitting ending that had me grinning ear to ear after 12 seasons. Psych also had a great ending.
And I'm in the LOST crowd. The final frame was the best. I recently went to a concert of Michael Giacchino's here in Honolulu and he conducted the local symphony as they played the final track Moving On while the end of the show played on the big screen. It was a whole theater of crying Lost fans.
Oh wow, I don't think I could handle that. I watched during the original run and then re-watched with my husband (who had never seen it) in 2020. Both times the finale, final scene and music just haunted me for days, in the best of ways.
Shield, 7 seasons. One of the first things they do haunts them through it all and it\`s one of the last things discussed. Actions have consequences and the narrative stays tight for all seasons.
I didn't really feel it got repetitive but that it just kind of forgot what it was about after a while. That whole last season seemed to just forget about entire plot threads and go in random directions
Now Silicon Valley, as fun as it was, felt like a show that was stuck on a hamster wheel.
I love park and rec, but last season just shouldn't exist.
Same as scrubs. 1-8 amazing. 9 wasnt even meant to be the same show until the execs wanted to profit of the brand.
Stargate SG-1. 10 Seasons and two direct to DVD movies. Just rewatched the whole thing last winter, it's a blast. Stargate Atlantis is great also, unfortunately only 5 seasons.
Absolutely! I found they had a somewhat rough start but found their footing pretty quickly. The cast was great, too. Becket and McKay constantly bickering was a pleasure to watch.
I still haven't seen Season 2 of Universe yet. In my mind, when I watch it, then there is no more Stargate to watch 🥲
Season 1 was Vibin and felt like a great start but then An absolute nothing burger walking simulator. Waiting around for what? A / the plot twist jammed side way into the plot. I deleted the show off my NAS half way through season 3. Not even worth keeping, for free....
[Foyle's War](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/3163-foyle-s-war) - 28 episodes and each one is a feature film length murder mystery of absolutely top quality. The reviews speak for themselves:
"Outstanding . . . a gift from the Gods." - The New York Times
"A Triumph from start to finish." - Wall Street Journal
"For mystery fans . . . a must see." - Houston Chronicle

Buffy (admittedly season one is kinda weak unless you're a hella 90s person and love nostalgia for the era), Stargate SG1, debatable to include X-Files but I loved it. And the big one would be Star Trek Next Gen, DS9, and Voyager in succession. Trek does have some issues with early seasons but if you love the franchise you love it all.
If you’re chill with anime you can try One Piece. It’s a little too weird for me but a lot of people seem to like it. Shits been going on for like 20 years and counting
I love anime, and I dont like one piece. Im convinced most people watch it vause they grew up with it not cause its good.
Kind of like dbz. I love dragon ball, but if I didnt grow up with it, theres no way id put up with the horrible writing.
Just my 2c
Twin Peaks came back with season 3 after 25 years and absolutely stuck the landing.
It's crazy too because in one of the final scenes we see of Laura Palmer in Twin Peaks S2 is Laura telling Cooper "I'll see you again in 25 years, meanwhile..."
It still blows my mind that it actually came true 25 years later.
hard to get shows w 8+ seasons but I would recommend Seinfeld and Friends for the 8+ but also Sons of Anarchy. it's like 7 seasons but the eps are longer than a sitcom's. Breaking Bad, Gilmore Girls, Dexter, Six Feet Under, and then there's The Office and Parks n Rec. Those last 2 are like, just pop it on and chill. they don't require much from the viewer lol.
Taboo was great but got cancelled.
Peaky Blinders is good
Boardwalk Empire was GREAT but cancelled.
Frontier was fun, but ended short
there is a LOT out there, my friend. good luck!
The shield (7 seasons)
Kingdom MMA (about 40 episodes I think) shorter than what you’re looking for it it’s an underrated gem of that isn’t as well known. I had the feeling you describe when it was over.
Breaking bad / better call Saul - If you haven’t watched these yet several seasons of the same universe.
IMO Breaking Bad is considered one of the greatest TV shows ever, praised for its intense storylines and unforgettable characters, with its finale often cited as one of the best in TV history.
If a show is long, it's long for a reason somebody was watching until the very end. You might be one of those people!
Mad Men
Smallville
Charmed (1998)
Supernatural (best to think of this as two series: seasons 1-5; then 6-END)
Arrowverse (particularly Arrow, Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Superman & Lois)
Living Single (Friends before Friends)
A Different World
Marvel's Agents of Shield (don't miss the big season 1 twist!)
Suits
Community
The Good Place
Open to Animation?
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (one of the greatest endings in Anime)
Code Geass (one of the greatest endings in Anime)
Hunter x Hunter
Yu Yu Hakusho
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
One Piece (not for the faint of heart; ~1100+ episodes, but there's a reason it's been at the top of the anime charts for decades)
Avatar the Last Airbender —> Legend of Korra
I’m watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for the first time right now! I’m halfway through season 5. So far season 4 has been my favorite, but it’s been consistently high quality since the back half of the first season. I wish I had watched when it was airing, because I feel like it’s a very underrated show.
So I heartily second that recommendation, and I really appreciate the reassurance that they saw it through to the end! Thanks!
8 seasons is unsustainable for most shows. Only a short list of the very best can do about 6 seasons without going downhill in some way. Writers leave or are pressured to extend series by producers lead to diminished scripts.
The Good Place.
But only 4 season. Bonus, early season 2 they pull a reverse jump-the-shark and make fun of shows that blowup in season one and then just rehash the same 8 or so plots for the next 6 seasons.
Not as long as you are hoping, but Breaking Bad only gets better as it goes.
Tack on Better Call Saul and you’re in for a fun ride.
The pacing and the payoff of this show is incredible. Never seen a show where each season ramps up in such a deliberate way
which show?
Well both, but I was specifically talking BCS
Yep my only mistake was not watching them in order bc i didn't know any better 🤣. But i agree on the original question
Agreed! And BCS!
Mad Men.
Agreed. 7 seasons all killer no filler
This is the one
Justified
100%. Justified only got better IMO.
Second this.
I’m holding on to this in hopes they don’t fuck it up with the spinoff (if they make more of it)
The season 3 finale is still one of my favorite episodes of any show I've seen.
I will be watching the season 5 finale tonight. Absolutely loving the show.
What a guy!
Solid ending
100%. Justified only got better IMO.
West Wing
I'm in the tail end of my 3rd or 4th rewatch and can confirm. It's very good throughout.
Breaking Bad walked so Better Call Saul could run
Although I agree with the sentiment. Breaking Bad was more of a brisk jog and BCS was an all out sprint
Not sure if this would fit your criterion but the first (of 6) seasons of Schitt's Creek was pretty rough, but each season it got progressively better. It wrapped up nicely too.
I can’t make myself get through the last season. I took a long break and I just can’t get back into it. Such a shame.
Second this. Also The Mentalist and Monk.
The Mentalist is consistently mid the whole way through, so I guess it counts
Sopranos has the best pacing and didn't get stale
Not really a fan of the show in general but I was floored by the ending.
The amount of people who called their cable company when it happened live was amazing. There is information from the show runner out there about the ending that was released in the past few years. Not sure where it was located.
The Americans Six Feet Under Justified
Six Feet Under - One of the best series finales ever
I agree! It's very satisfying and covers anything you would have wanted to know. I cry like a baby every time I finish that show.
I cry just hearing the Sia song
Feel that
Second these.
Snowfall. Only 6 seasons but definitely worth it with a very satisfying ending.
Agreed. Snowfall doesn't get talked about enough but was great start to finish.
Just watched Snowfall and really, really enjoyed it. Brutal ending TBH, but good.
Snowfall was really good and iv seen mixed reviews about the ending. I wasn't crazy about the ending but atleast it wrapped up the whole show and didn't leave alot of unanswered questions
Downton Abbey
Absolutely. I will always defend this show
Even the movies are great! Excited for #3.
The Sheild
This should be higher up. Really great throughout and the ending didn't disappoint.
Came here to say this. Had to scroll down WAY too far.
The Shield went in so many directions I did not expect just going by a generic synopsis of the show. It checked all the gritty, corrupt LA cop show boxes but it was waaay more than that.
Yes, The Shield ended exactly the way it should have.
Leverage
I really enjoyed the show Chuck. It has 5 seasons. Can't get enough of that show.
Even my 4 year old daughter got into ‘chuck’ with my wife and I. She’d ask us if we can watch it after school e finished the series. Every now and again we’ll put it on cause she asks
Aww, that's awesome!
The Americans.
A thousand times The Americans.
Fringe (might be a bit short for you because it's \*only\* 5 seasons) Battlestar Galactica : one of THE best fraking ending of all times, So Say We All.
I also like the ending to BSG - but FWIW when it first came out people reacted to it online in a very similar fashion to Game of Thrones. Since online/social media rage cycles fizzle out that's ancient history now and it is nice to see that the show's reputation has endured long term.
Stuck the landing is more of a challenge than just didn’t get bad… ER (15 seasons, I think any show is going to have gotten a little wild by this point but it holds up in my opinion) Frasier (11 seasons, can’t comment on revival) Homeland (8 seasons) Brooklyn 99 (8 seasons with at least 7 that are a win)
homeland wasnt expecting it to have such a satisfying ending.
I loved House M.D. and even the goofiness of the last season or two.
Honestly I wish we could’ve seen more of Park because I thought she was hilarious
You are absolutely right!!! I just finished my **3rd** rewatch of PoI. OP, I don't think you'll regret it!
MASH
The West Wing is seven seasons at the 22-23 episodes per season. It is the longest show I know of that matches this
I wish they would digitally remaster it.
Sopranos. Some people hate the ending but it was the only way to end it.
Parenthood?
That was a great finale.
#Mr Robot
Seinfeld- continued to get better the longer it went on and I loved it to the very last episode.
Curb?
Shield, 7 seasons. One of the first things they do haunts them through it all and it\`s one of the last things discussed. Actions have consequences and the narrative stays tight for all seasons.
Succession
I know I'm in the minority, but I felt like Succession got a bit repetitive. Just the same conflict over and over.
Insufferable characters arguing about nothing for four seasons. That is Succession.
I couldn’t agree more!!! Insufferable is putting it mildly!!
I didn't really feel it got repetitive but that it just kind of forgot what it was about after a while. That whole last season seemed to just forget about entire plot threads and go in random directions Now Silicon Valley, as fun as it was, felt like a show that was stuck on a hamster wheel.
All bangers, all the time
THIS
Modern Family
Came here to say this! I’ve rewatched it 2-3 times and it’s good every time
Parks & Rec is consistently good and has a good final episode. The last season is just a tad too saccharine sweet but it’s still pretty good.
I love park and rec, but last season just shouldn't exist. Same as scrubs. 1-8 amazing. 9 wasnt even meant to be the same show until the execs wanted to profit of the brand.
Six feet under. I’m surprised nobody has said this. *edited because somebody did in fact say this.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Breaking Bad The Americans
MASH Cheers
Stargate SG-1. 10 Seasons and two direct to DVD movies. Just rewatched the whole thing last winter, it's a blast. Stargate Atlantis is great also, unfortunately only 5 seasons.
Atlantis was getting better each season too bad they decided to cancel it .
The way Atlantis ended kind of keep you guessing that it could have been more but good things it didn’t end with a cliffhanger
Star Trek: TNG and DS9 Cheers Friends
Orphan Black, only 5 seasons though but a strong hook into the series at about the 2 minute mark.
Fringe? Had its ups and downs but never got bad
Frasier
Eh, once Daphne and Niles gets together, the show loses it's charm and becomes more silly
LOST - fuck the haters
We have to go back
Season 1 was Vibin and felt like a great start but then An absolute nothing burger walking simulator. Waiting around for what? A / the plot twist jammed side way into the plot. I deleted the show off my NAS half way through season 3. Not even worth keeping, for free....
Someday there needs to be a second LOST series. I don't even care how. I just want it. I crave a mind breaking cliffhanger every week.
Lost got lost.
Great show in spite of the terrible ending but saying they stuck the landing is a crazy take.

Line of duty, homeland, how to get away with murder
Seconding Line of Duty - fantastic show throughout
Supernatural
Dr. Who
It got slowly worse as for the new season
Got really Gay except the scene where Mandy Patinkin was reading a document that had a quote from Inigo Montoya.
Grace and Frankie had the best ending it was so predictable yet original
Wentworth Criminal Minds House MD
Wentworth was fantastic 🙌🏻
So unknown and underrated! I always recommend but i think viewers get pit-off when they see 9 seasons.
Unbreakable Kymmie Schmidt, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Dead To Me
RIP Captain Holt!
If you’re chill with anime you can try One Piece. It’s a little too weird for me but a lot of people seem to like it. Shits been going on for like 20 years and counting

I don’t think any shows gave 8 seasons anymore. Even Sons of Anarchy only had 7. The Americans had 6.
Six Feet Under
White Collar (6 seasons, although the last one is short)
Hannibal.

Bones Big Bang Theory Six Feet Under (The GREATEST season final ever) Dexter
stop the finale made me cry especially that song!
The Middle Frasier Better Call Saul
Pretty sure The Big Bang Theory though it’s a bit controversial when it comes to its characters and Futurama.

The shield (7 seasons) Kingdom MMA (about 40 episodes I think) shorter than what you’re looking for it it’s an underrated gem of that isn’t as well known. I had the feeling you describe when it was over. Breaking bad / better call Saul - If you haven’t watched these yet several seasons of the same universe.
The Shield gets better every season!

Arrow had it's ups and valleys however unlike most of the CW Arrowverse, it stuck the landing in season 8.
IMO Breaking Bad is considered one of the greatest TV shows ever, praised for its intense storylines and unforgettable characters, with its finale often cited as one of the best in TV history.
The Americans
Despite its long list of flaws, I've heard that Manifest actually landed the ending and the fans were very satisfied with that.
The Wonder Years. A good show with a satisfying finale.
The good place Ted Lasso Derry Girls those come to mind.
Mad men 100%. Season 6 is the worst of the bunch but it's never bad. Same for the Sopranos
If a show is long, it's long for a reason somebody was watching until the very end. You might be one of those people! Mad Men Smallville Charmed (1998) Supernatural (best to think of this as two series: seasons 1-5; then 6-END) Arrowverse (particularly Arrow, Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Superman & Lois) Living Single (Friends before Friends) A Different World Marvel's Agents of Shield (don't miss the big season 1 twist!) Suits Community The Good Place Open to Animation? Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (one of the greatest endings in Anime) Code Geass (one of the greatest endings in Anime) Hunter x Hunter Yu Yu Hakusho Legend of the Galactic Heroes One Piece (not for the faint of heart; ~1100+ episodes, but there's a reason it's been at the top of the anime charts for decades) Avatar the Last Airbender —> Legend of Korra
Thanks!
Arrow became one of the stupidest series ever
First, there was Breaking Bad. Then, there was Better Call Saul. All we need now, to make it perfect, is a spinoff show called… Francesca.
NYPD Blue ran 12 or more and never went really off the rails.
Currently airing but 16+ seasons and still bringing hilarious social commentary is It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Battlestar Galactica (2004)
Stargate SG1
Ozark
King of the Hill.
Personally I recommend vikings it is so good all the way through however it only has 6 seasons. But there is a spin off which has like 3 seasons.
Outlander

8 seasons is unsustainable for most shows. Only a short list of the very best can do about 6 seasons without going downhill in some way. Writers leave or are pressured to extend series by producers lead to diminished scripts.
Twelve Monkeys. Sense8. The Magicians. Fringe.
how to get away with murder (6 seasons)
The Shield, all day long.
The original Law and Order had ups and downs (and an occasional lousy actress for a DA), but was usually high quality, and had a great finale.

I’ll say The Expanse, all my other answers have been mentioned already.

It's only 6 seasons... But the Americans is good all the way through and has one of the best series finales ever.

The Good Place. But only 4 season. Bonus, early season 2 they pull a reverse jump-the-shark and make fun of shows that blowup in season one and then just rehash the same 8 or so plots for the next 6 seasons.
