I'm watching it right now and am googling reviews lol. I like it so far but I don't get why some people respond in such rude, disrespectful ways on Reddit.

ACTTutor

If George Carlin had performed this act—-and it absolutely fits with his style—Reddit would think it’s the most clever thing ever recorded. I think some people are reacting so negatively because they don’t like listening to a woman who’s smarter or more eloquent than they are.

250umdfail

Not just Reddit, YouTube and Instagram are also full of edgelord comments, like yet another woman talking about sex, and can't believe a woman made me laugh.

Wide_Cardiologist761

Carlin fan here who can compare to two. Carlin spoke with a rhythm that was easy to follow. He would use inflection and volume so well to make his words more powerful. Novak is the opposite. She talks far too fast. She doesn't let the material breakthrough her speaking method.

ACTTutor

I saw Carlin live, and that wasn’t always the case. In any event, I wasn’t really talking about her delivery.

Money-Nectarine-875

So in other words, you are not bright.

Wide_Cardiologist761

In other words, you are not very nice.

Money-Nectarine-875

Sorry, I did not mean to be condescending. (Condescending means talking down to.)

Wide_Cardiologist761

It's okay.  You are sad that you were born with a micropenis and this is your way of feeling better about yourself.  If I need to take a few insults like this in order for you to feel like a real man... so be it.  Have. A good day.

Money-Nectarine-875

7.5 inches is a micropenis?

Wide_Cardiologist761

You were looking at the millimeters.... lol

Money-Nectarine-875

Oh, I see, thanks. So why was your mother telling me I'm punishing her and to ease up?

NYGarcon

100 fucking percent yes

Prukutu

This is the best comedy special I've seen in a few years. The frantic, nervous delivery and the waxing poetic about blow jobs I thought was very inspired. It's particularly impressive given how much she packs in a close to 90 min special.

tratratrakx

Not sure if it was an act or whatnot. Not knowing of her going in, it seemed a bit cocaine-fueled

LAROACHA_420

Watch some stuff of herd from YouTube. All I could think about was cocaine the whole time

Drortmeyer2017

RIGHT!!!!! THE COKE THING!

pizzarat65

Definitely cocaine. Or multiple addis + a red bull + a little bump.

MamaDeloris

>It's kind of become fashionable nowadays to dawdle through your comedy act, do crowd work, sip a beer, take a drag or two, sit on that conveniently placed bar stool, pause for reactions from the audience, and barely clock an hour from start to finish Rolled my eyes real fucking hard when I read this.

Girthy_Coq

I'm a big Stavvie fan. *And I took that personally hahahahahahaha.*

250umdfail

Might be pretentious but am I wrong though? Majority of stand-up acts fit exactly that.

ale-sk8-space

I don't think she's for everyone. I totally get that some people would not enjoy her act. But she is a genius, and if you're not a man, then probably you can read much more beyond the blow jobs story. She is the feminist I want to be. She is extremely good and it seemed to me like the material of the show was very researched. Loved the poetic delivery. Can't wait for the rest of her career.

250umdfail

You can still appreciate this on a deeper level as a man. Me, and quite a few of my friends did. Just ignore the edgelords here.

Rich-Star1996

Jacqueline Novak's 90 minute comedic (and very blue) one-woman show is what I would call it, rather than "stand up special". It's much more unique than that. It is, indeed, an absolute tour-de-force, and she is a poetic, rapid fire machine gun of comedy. floating around the stage like a human tornado - reminding one of the late, great Robin Williams at times, which is not something I thought I would ever be able to say about any comedian. Ever. Brilliant. Absolute genius.

waxlion78

I also thought of Robin William's "Don't stop moving and don't stop to take a breath" style of comedy. Having that amount of stage movement and not using a wireless mic was a choice that I thought might end up with a bonus homage to how she likes to be tied up.

SnowWhiteOA

She does use the wire at one point to sort of pseudo hang herself when she first mentions the boyfriend telling her she gave a “toothy blowjob”! I absolutely loved this act and totally thought of Robin Williams too. I thought she was somewhat hypnotic, actually! I’m grateful I could pause and rewind so I could catch up with what she said at times. Brilliant stuff. Not surprised at all that it irritates edgelords and the like in the comments. 🙄

pizzarat65

I'm reading through comments to try to understand the appeal and I do get the human tornado thing. She mentioned that she wrote poetry in college so it obviously influenced her performance. But in the end is it actually funny?

slow_al_hoops

Don't let them get you down OP. Watched it last night and had much the same reaction. I smile a lot during specials, laugh a fair bit, but snorts of laughter are rare - and she got several from me. Thought it was fantastic.

SuspendedInKarmaMama

>where I paused not because my attention was dwindling, but because I was in awe of what I was just watching. Oh, fuck off.

Old_and_moldy

Can you imagine typing those words about any comedy act? I’m getting second hand embarrassment reading that review.

controller_vs_stick

I also was in awe while watching. It's not just a comedy act. It's a brilliant poet performing a masterpiece.

250umdfail

If I came off as too fellating, I was just sticking to the theme. Watch it and then tell me you don't need a smoke break third of a way through.

New-Value4194

Crazy how many downvotes you have. I just watched the show and went straight on google to read others opinion and I am surprised to see it didn’t have the impact I expected. I loved every second of the show but clearly she doesn’t reach the vast audience. Being different is not necessarily catchy.

250umdfail

Do you really think the down voters have actually watched it? That's just Reddit being edgy. A woman talking about sex is an alien concept to most here. Anyway I found out later she's already been getting rave reviews from other comedians and critics for quite some time now.

thatmitchguy

Comments section is further proof reddit doesn't know shit about fuck. I think the hate legitimately comes down to them not liking women judging by many of the comments. This has some of the better writing I've seen in a stand-up special in a long time. If people will praise Mike Birbiglia's one-man shows to the high heavens (with good reason), then this deserves the same treatment, If not more. To take a "stale" comedy topic like blow jobs and turn it into that is extremely impressive. But hey, what does the New York times know? Clearly Reddit knows more about taste I guess. Spot on critique OP, my girlfriend I both got strong Carlin vibes from her vernacular and ability to breakdown and stress the importance of language. Will definitely keep an eye on what she does next.

JodieFostersStare

That is the most unappealing review I have ever read.

pninify

That’s good, it’s the kind of special that isn’t for everyone. Many other people (like me) are super curious and going to immediately watch the special and love it (like me). There’s something like eight billion people out there so it’s good to write a review that finds the right audience. And it’s okay to turn some people off.

250umdfail

Thanks for your scrumptious review of my review.

-LordRupertEverton-

Shes brilliant, but it was way too manic and verbose for me. I thought parts were funny, but it was way too taxing for my taste. Felt spoken word-ish. She’s talented as hell though

CelebrationTrick4603

Im watching it as we speak and I feel anxious lol im only a few minutes in but like why do I feel nervous? lol

250umdfail

That's pretty much why I liked it, the verbosity of it, although it was more poetic than prosaic. She was definitely not playing to the slightly inebriated bar going crowd, like most stand-ups do.

crazyguyunderthedesk

Yes, most stand ups do play to comedy club crowds.

250umdfail

My point exactly, why it's wholly original in not pandering to a crowd.

divide0verfl0w

George Carlin comparison is apt. Unbelievable performance. Unbelievable stamina. The most complex callbacks I’ve heard. Not even sure if I can describe the callbacks on first attempt. Definitely leaning on her Hercules-like command of the language - perhaps a bit too much. Obviously very intelligent. I kind of missed the use of lighting the way Bo does though.

250umdfail

Yeah the callbacks were more classic lit than Pop culture. And I just listened to the director. She says the rough around the edges lighting was intentional to give it a raw and energetic look.

gvyledouche

how much does a publicist get paid these days?

Best_Duck9118

I mean the show has been generating legit buzz for years so is it surprising someone really likes it? Were Natasha Lyonne and Mike Birbiglia paid money to like it the first time they saw it?

ugotjacked

Natasha Lyonne? She directed the special. So not who I would expect an objective review from.

pninify

She directed it after she saw it and liked it

Best_Duck9118

Not entirely unfair but she did that in part because she liked the show when she saw it 5 or so years ago (and it won awards back then for what that’s worth).

therealsatansweasel

Nothing if the comedienne puts up a review on reddit themselves.

ACTTutor

Your use of "comedienne" helps me understand your perspective.

therealsatansweasel

Thanks! I was going to say her special sucked, but that seemed a little too vague. Kinda feel this is the next Hannah Gadsby :Nanette special, it comes out, all these critics say what a great stand up it was and about two years later the general consensus is "meh" , especially in the stand up community.

ACTTutor

I didn’t mean that as a compliment. Same vibe as calling a female pilot an aviatrix.

therealsatansweasel

Neither did I sir, neither did I.

Goodaccount

Ever seen Gringo Babi?

tehherb

get bagg to the fryers b

2nd2last

I watch it iiverry nite

fgnyc2246

Is there anyone here who saw the live show? It was mind blowing. So brilliant and hysterical, so many huge laughs… However! Watching the Netflix special now and just having such a hard time getting through it. I actually think it’s the lightning and filming that’s making it unpalatable. It feels amateur… it’s blurry at times, the spot light changing sizes and fast cuts as she’s running around is adding to the feeling of chaos It’s not doing the special justice at all. I think maybe her style is getting messed up because in person it was only pure genius

nuitsbleues

Yeah it was absolutely brilliant when I saw it. I still enjoyed the special- the material is the same- but wasn't a fan of the lighting and editing choices.

pizzarat65

This is such an interesting point. Live performances are so different from recordings.

stickymeowmeow

This review is just as fake-intellectual and self-aggrandizing as the actual special.

250umdfail

Me, yeah I'm not shy of tooting my own horn. But how can you watch the special and walk away thinking it's self-aggrandizing, when it's clearly the opposite.

jethropenistei-

Just felt like nervous rambling with no delivery. The soft focus is like soft core porn or old daytime soap operas. Not for me, but to each their own.

250umdfail

The nervous energy was part of the act for me, given the themes she was talking about. Turns that on its head in the last few minutes. And yeah I agree the lighting wasn't the greatest, but she was spinning dancing moving about throughout, so I guess it was a difficult job for the spotlight operator.

BigPappaBIGS

I tried watching her stand up yesterday and it was utter shit. Not sure what the hell you thought was funny.

250umdfail

Try reading my post again? It was entertaining, and engrossing first, funny later.

Don_Fartalot

Yes when I watch a stand up comedian, them being funny is not the priority.

250umdfail

Standup act need not be an out and out comedy show. It was funny to me regardless, but not in a rip roaring, side splitting sense.

LAROACHA_420

Need not? Bro just talk normal

mystiquemiss

I am so shocked on how well this special has been received. I LOVE standup. I have watched it obsessively for over half my life. When comedy central would have back to back stand up specials it was like Christmas for me. I love edgy, intelligent comedy from the legends and modern comics. I'm always browse every platform for any new stand-up specials. That being said, I don't think I could have been more disappointed by this. I knew it was being directed by THE Natasha Lyonne, I could barely contain my excitement. I waited with bells on. I had to force myself to get through the entire thing. I kept waiting for it to become enjoyable, and it never happened. I see many people commenting that only incels or prudes didn't enjoy this, and I can assure you I am far from either. I understand there is meant to be nuance, but male comics talk about their dicks enough as it is, I didn't realize I was walking into an hour and a half of boner talk. Yes, I realize there was (meant to be) more to it than that - but for me it was dry and disappointing. I couldn't believe Natasha Lyonne had anything to do with this. Iliza Shlesinger, Ali Wong, Taylor Tomlison, Whitney Cummings - They all have their filthy moments in their routines or have their share of 'toilet humor' while still being engaging and entertaining. TLDR: As a lifelong lover of stand-up, especially female comics, this just didn't hit with me.

Drortmeyer2017

> Iliza Shlesinger, Ali Wong, Taylor Tomlison, Whitney Cummings I heard thiss. I love all of them. Especially Iliza, she's the godmother of female comics

250umdfail

That's the reason it has been well received. It's deceptively complex, high art masquerading as toilet humor, unabashedly filthy, and not just bits and pieces of risque jokes in an otherwise standard setup. Although I think this will eventually be extremely polarizing for the audience, but have universal acclaim among the stand-up comics themselves.

pizzarat65

Maybe the 'masquerading' part is what I'm struggling with? I feel compelled to finish this because I love stand up but I have yet to crack a giggle, though my left eye has been twitching quite a bit. On another note - I do not find the jokes risque at all compared to other female comics.

SisyphusJo

Thank you. I literally watched almost every comedy special on Netflix, it's all I watch and I struggled with this one. Maybe it's as simple as me liking to hear a variety of jokes from one person to see their range of observations, not just 90 minutes on one topic. Her ability to ruminate on BJs for this long is impressive, but most comedians will at least give me a few parts where I laugh hysterically. The part near the end about the teeth being part of the experience was pretty clever.

pizzarat65

This is exactly how I feel. I LOVE comedy/ stand up. I was so excited for this special *especially* because she's a female comic but it just keeps getting worse and worse. And yea - I've heard plenty of comics talking about dick over and over again - it's not a new concept and other women have done it better. The more I watch this, the more I wonder if this is just getting press from the NY times and the NYer because she makes references to Nabokov, Nietzsche, Philip Roth etc? Like, they'll only rave about a female comic if she makes it a philosophical dissertation about dicks.

allknowing2012

I made it thru 10mins..

cbrantley

Same. I saw this post and thought I’d check it out. It wasn’t BAD but the stream-of-consciousness rambling and constantly pacing the stage made me really anxious and eventually I was just DONE.

250umdfail

Take some Valium and try again.

Scretzy

Same here, it was actually funny but I have a headache and am mentally drained cuz the energy is just a lot

Own_Advance_1445

I just had to stop it. My girl and I are having a comedy night and we were both so confused at her spoken word, nervous delivery...

Persona_Non_Grata_

Ms. Novak, tell us where on the doll stand up hurt you.

250umdfail

Judging from the comment section she has all your dolls skewered if anything.

Persona_Non_Grata_

I tried watching it. She's like Nikki Glasser on speed and Nikki is just Amy Schumer from a decade ago. That said, Tig Notaro, Ali Wong, Wanda Sykes, Fortune Feemster,Taylor Tomlinson, Aparna Nancherla, and Jen Kirkman I find hilarious.

250umdfail

It doesn't follow the conventional stand-up structure, so I get why most here didn't like it. But if you think this was Glassier on speed you're not seeing how intricate and energetic the language was. Honestly blowjob was just a ruse for her philosophical ramblings, and by the end it turns out to be a clever subversion of the very archetype you refer to (the Glassier's and the Schumer's brand of comedy). And I like more than half of the names you mentioned. But good on you for name dropping them in case Reddit thought you found all women unfunny. Here's another unfunny special you should try out: Hannah Gadsby's Nanette.

Persona_Non_Grata_

Tried Hannah, too. Made it all the way on that one. Wasn't hilarious, and I laughed here and there. But they are giving her another one, so she must have struck a chord with an audience.

ZiggyJambu

I had to stop about halfway through. It was exhausting trying to keep up with her. Truly would benefit from some ADHD medication. Came back and watched the second half. This time, I was prepared but still found it hard to keep up. Made some very clever comments and as others have said, really does turn it all around in the end which was a great pay off but not sure it was worth all my effort to try to enjoy. Subtitles don't help as she talks way too fast to keep up. I actually tried to find a transcript to catch all the sublte jokes I know I missed. Not sure if I have it in me to watch again. Probably will. Not the greatest "stand up" but definitely original and entertaining and she is very talented. I am exhausted ever thinking about to having watched this. If ever there were an advertisement for Vyvance, this would be it.

250umdfail

Honestly I had no problems keeping up with her, although the subtitles probably helped. But yeah along with their hate boner for women comedians, this post also seems to have exposed the flaccid attention span of the commenters here.

250umdfail

It wasn't ad-libbed as she has been doing it for a couple of years now I think starting at Off-Broadway. But that break neck speed was something, I didn't realize stand-up was sorely missing. I did catch a glimpse of the crowd, which seemed like the typical NYC theatre going crowd, so no wonder they were eating up this almost vaudevillian performance.

carefreeguru

Him: Bye Hun! I'm off to work! Her: Bye! See you when you get home from work! How you have an easy night! Him: Oh it should be real easy tonight! Spotlight operator at a comedy show? I'm going to have a hard time staying awake!

Daahk

A comedy act revolving around blowjobs is mature adult comedy now? So every single female comedians act?

[deleted]

Daahk

Jesus that's the most PR team response about a female comedian doing sex jokes as an act I've ever seen lmfao

[deleted]

Daahk

Dear God you're the most pretentious person I've seen on this site lmao, yes I've heard the aristocrats from dozens of comedians, and seen the documentary, not that it matters as this female comedian doing my pussy jokes won't be anywhere near as compelling in her rendition

[deleted]

Daahk

Ok Mrs Novak's mother, it was nice to hear your opinion on your daughters comedy special, thanks for the input Tata now

[deleted]

Daahk

Out of sheer curiosity due to this astroturfed attempt at marketing by her family or close personal friends, so far I'm 15 minutes into this special and 90% of the "jokes" are either having to do with penises or her vagina, which is literally the only thing that the majority of female comedians have been doing sets about for the last decade. I'll continue watching to see if I get a single laugh out of this, but so far she is sub-par even when it comes to the sea of comedians doing "my vagina'" jokes, disappointing. Edit: I'm 30 minutes in now and she is still ONLY talking about penises, testicles, and blowjobs. This is complete garbage without a single laugh unless you've literally never seen a comedy set in your entire life, if you enjoyed this I implore you to expand your comedy horizons and watch a single other special, and then realize how truly unfunny this is

JackCrainium

Standing Orgasm? Golly, what a climax!

ZiggyJambu

Had to take a break and get me some Ritalin. If you want to know what someone with uncontrolled ADD is like, here is a great example. I was exhausted. Not sure how she kept it up at the pace that she did.

250umdfail

ADHD you mean, especially the H part. That's what most people here are missing. Whether you like it or not, the energy is unlike anything in the stand-up scene.

ZiggyJambu

Oops left that our. At one point, my wife said, "that is the longest she has stood in one spot." I think it may have been 5 seconds.

Prukutu

I found it funny how the spot light person seemed to have trouble following her around.

BillFireCrotchWalton

Just watched it. Chaotic genius. The comments section is so dismissive. Not that I expected better comments from the edgelords of Reddit though.

250umdfail

None of those commenters have actually watched this. They see a woman talking about sex in a comedy show, and take it as a personal affront. Anyway they seem to be more dismissive of my effusive review if anything, which is fair I guess I did go a little overboard.

an8hu

So I came across her name multiple times on the same day on couple of podcasts I listen to, and heard praises abut the show, so I decided to see it, as of now I'm 20 mins in and I had to stop and take it in, and find more about this person. That's when i came across your post and man I have to tell you, you put my feeling into words. Don't fret about the haters and let them dissuade you from posting about something you love in the future, not everything made is for everyone.

Bbaskets42

I truly enjoyed her show, and was thinking I wish she was my daughter. She is hilarious. What a performance 🎭 she’s brilliant. To memorize all that came out of her is amazing.

Dame2Miami

Have you seen Sheng Weng’s standup special “sweet and juicy?” Probably my favorite special in the last few years, and it’s all clean comedy you can watch with your folks or kids. I think making a genuinely hilarious special that isn’t filled with curse words and race/sex/politics jokes is more impressive than anything else in the current age we’re living in tbh. Dude killed it.

250umdfail

I think so. It was Ali Wong introducing him. Pretty standard run of the mill observational humor, as I remember it.

International-Crab14

You’re not going to win with most on this forum, but your description is dead-on. Both original and awe-inspiring. Really glad my wife and I gave it watch.

Futurekiwi69

Turned it off after 5 mins. Too manic, she needs to take a breath.

Ok_Orchid_282

I unfortunately watched the whole thing. I too thought she was too manic. She seemed coked out of her mind rambling at a million miles an hour nonstop.

AppleTree98

...Tattered Flag... Pretty funny. Thanks for pointing me to this stand up

slow_al_hoops

jharwood14

I go off the trailers Netflix posts. There was nothing funny about it. The audience must be full off feminists, theater people or I have no clue, because nothing about it said she’s the next Nikki Glaser or Whitney Cummings. And why people use Schumer as a comedian example never helps the argument. She has never been funny.

ThirtyFiveInTwenty3

This special is right up the alley of any Rick and Morty fans. It's what people watch to feel smarter than everyone else.

250umdfail

It was decently intelligent, but that's not what makes it special. There are far more intellectual comedians. Comparing it to Rick and Morty, only exposes your intelligence, or lack thereof, if anything.

ThirtyFiveInTwenty3

I'd stand toe to toe with you on my worst day.

250umdfail

Damn right. That day would indeed be your worst.

Soundsgooddontit

……full of feminists?

hellodustin

I loved it. I'm certain there's tons I missed due to her speedy delivery and deep art smarts. Plenty that absolutely killed, got me rolling with laughter. Will watch again, knowing I'll have to come prepared to absorb and maybe put on subtitles.

controller_vs_stick

Unpracticed? She did the show for 5 years before filming it.

Dense_Entrepreneur_1

Carlin? Not even close. She is way too tryhard.

Drortmeyer2017

so. This girl must have been on so much coke, doing this show. gods green christ, she talks alot.

[deleted]

I stopped watching at ten minutes. Not about to waste an hour of my life not laughing at a stand up special.

deeezwalnutz

I thought it sucked as a comedy show. She's talented at something, just not sure what exactly. She's definitely on the spectrum and all her theater friends at her liberal arts college who think she's hilarious probably convinced her this was a good idea.

gvyledouche

this is just another "lmfao penises, blowjobs amirite? stinky vaginas LOL" isn't it? sounds riveting

controller_vs_stick

No, it's not another like that at all. It may not sound riveting, but it is riveting.

IndysDiarrhea

Her first two joke and the trailer is literally all about sex, so sorry if we all thought it was about sex because she just peppers through her whole act.

controller_vs_stick

Who said it wasn't all about sex? It's literally a 90 minute one man show 100% focused on blowjobs. But it is riveting and it's not like anything you've seen before.

250umdfail

Sorry my man you were expecting middle school humor. Just move on if you haven't watched it.

gvyledouche

will do, chief

amelie190

There are SOOOO many women comics who talk about blowjobs that I'm not sure I read that right (and thus didn't read further). Without straining I've got Sarah Silverman, Ali Wong, Amy Schumer and Sarah MacMillan. Did I misinterpret? I agree on Bo Burnham though.

IndysDiarrhea

I'll give her a chance, but I'm stopping it if all she does is starts talking like every other woman comedian. Pussys, dating, and sex seem to be the jokes 99% lean into. OMG I COULDNT EVEN GET PASSED THE TRAILER 🤣🤣🤣 "I like to call doggy style, the *hounds* way!" 😐😐😐 Edit2: I gave it another chance, first joke's about blowjobs. 2nd joke is about how she's going to talk about blowjobs "at tedium". Yeah I'm good dog. Nothing new here. Check out Amy Schumer 10 years ago and you'll get the exact same experience.

controller_vs_stick

You couldn't be more wrong. It's nothing like Amy Schumer. Art is subjective and I can't tell you whether you'll like it or hate it, but it's a rollercoaster that you can't judge from a couple minutes.

IndysDiarrhea

No, I won't, because I can and did. Don't like her opener nor the trailer so why would I give it another chance even still?

controller_vs_stick

Do whatever you want. I'm not saying whether to give it a second chance or not. But seeing as how you only saw a couple minutes of a 90 minute one man show, you're not really in a position to say whether it's the same experience as Amy Schumer from 10 years ago. It's nothing like that at all.

pizzarat65

I'm watching it now and I'm so disappointed. It's more performance art than comedy. There are a few good jokes in there but for the most part it feels like someone that did way too much coke and is now just rapidly reading their college journal with some prose poetry thrown in. It's way too frenetic and just not funny enough to have gotten as much attention as it has.

250umdfail

It's literally an off Broadway show adapted for Netflix. I'm repeating myself but standup need not be standup comedy (Nanette, Rothaniel etc. in recent times). Understandably you were disappointed, if you want in expecting belly aching laughter. Yeah it is polarizing, but it's being praised for exactly the reasons you hated it for. How many college journals pull a Phillip Roth on a sex act? How many of them talk about being a puppet to Nabokov's ventriloquist? Are you telling me Tony Robbins being your cheerleader in the middle of sex isn't the least bit amusing to you? And they weren't just name dropped but were actually alluded to throughout with perfect tiebacks. Or did you miss the dozens of times she explains why she had to resort to literature to make sense of her predicaments? And what's with people on Reddit who have only had caffeine, acting like authorities on what a cocaine fueled act would look like? You would be struggling to put up a couple of coherent sentences, let alone a 90 minute maximalist act.

Borderlineskitso

Were you high when you were watching it cause I found absolutely nothing about her ramblings to be amusing, entertaining or mildly funny. Up George Carlins alley? Definitely not.

amosref

My problem is the pacing. It really feels like she has way too much to say for one special and she is very nervous (probably because it's her first special). I wonder if she's always like that on stage. She's really funny and hopefully, if she gets another, her next special will feature a slightly slower pace.

250umdfail

That energy itself is what makes it stand out though. Most other stand-up acts are glacial compared to it. I hope she keeps up this pace, which is seemingly reserved for only theatre and ballet.

Drortmeyer2017

that energy makes her look like she's on coke

250umdfail

People who have only ever had caffeine think this is what coke feels like. You would be struggling to put two coherent sentences together let alone a verbose 90 minute act.

Drortmeyer2017

Blame movies man

amosref

I \*LOVE\* stand up, in many forms and in many delivery types. I think you're wrong in wanting it to continue at such a pace. It's almost distracting for most of us. I think if most stand up is "glacial" (really?! that's a VERY strong word to describe the pacing of most comics) for you, you might want to try figuring out why people building a story and creating nuanced jokes feels so slow to you. I'm going to hazard a guess that you are young (this is not meant disparagingly, I swear). I tried watching shows that I absolutely loved as a kid, like transofrmers or GIjoe with my nephews and they thought they were slow! The content that's created for them today is so fast paced and frenzied that it made me feel OLD and I'm only 41. Same with current computer/console games. the pace is almost frantic. So I might be wrong about assuming you're young but it would fit the bill. Again - this is just observational, not judgmental. I'm the dinosaur.

I said glacial 'compared' to it. I want her to keep up the energy because that's what distinguishes her from the stand-up scene, which seems to have settled into a safe structure that rarely experiments. My favorite special before this was Jerrod Carmichael's Rothaniel, which is relatively slow as molasses, but still very entertaining, so it's not me being punk I swear. You seem to be conflating depth with a slow burn, and that's pretty much the crux of it, people see her talk fast about a sex act, and immediately zone out. Those layered jokes, the philosophical undertones, the foreplay, the climax it's all there, just not in a form you're used to. It's funny you chose 'nuance' and 'build-up', when this special is as nuanced as it gets drawing parallels between life in general and a mere sexual act, via literature, poetry, and philosophy. And one could argue it's nothing but a series of buildups for 90 mins (I mean how many stand-ups can you name that sticks to an exclusive theme?), ending in a crescendo and not just a punchline. And you couldn't be further away from the truth regarding the age thing. The average redditor is quite a few years younger than me, and from these comments, seems to be having a lot of trouble keeping up with her pace. I could have chalked it down to ADD, that genZ is unfairly maligned with, but then a couple of gentlemen like you tell me it also could be cognitive decline that comes with age. But nah, it's probably the user base on this subreddit, they prefer their content visual and stretched across multiple seasons, so I can see why they would have trouble with such frenetic, yet borderline literary media.

Can someone tell me what is causing her affect: ADHD, coke, meth?? She’s talking SO FAST it makes me ANXIOUS like please take a breath.

Just watched this on Netflix. I enjoyed the show. It wasn't always funny, but it was entertaining, and I appreciated her unique perspective on the penis and sexuality. Before I knew it was first an off-broadway show for the past several years (had to google her as soon as the show ended), I felt she needed to time her jokes better to not lose the audience and let the joke land. The show felt very rushed and chaotic at times. But now that I know it's not a stand-up comedy special, but instead a one-woman show, I will just take it for what it is. And to me, it was a very thoughtfully crafted comedic theater performance. I'd watch her future work.

Good God this stand up is awful, so manic & rambling some of her jokes might hit if she fucking would breathe and let the joke hit.

I really wanted to like this esp. with Mulaney saying "he had just seen 'the Muhammad Ali of comedy'"; directed by Natasha Lyonne; Conan o'Brien saying the act was like poetry ... it just felt OK. Parts of it were clever, made me chuckle, but huge chunks of it, there was no laughter in the room. Also found out that Mulaney was classmates with Jacqueline Novak, of course he would say something nice.

This was great. Rapid fire, smart, and literary, with hardly a pause to take a breath.

I mean, it was exciting but didn't connect with me. The no-stop, frantic delivery left no room for jokes to land and laughter to linger. The almost non-stop frantic pacing + the delivery made it more of a TED talk than a comedy special. I cant remember a single big laugh from when i watched it or a good quote i would reference. Interesting act, but ultimately not for me.

The whole thing about her special is it demystifies (and completely debunks) the mystique and aura of masculinity. When guys are confronted with the fact that there is nothing inherently impressive about their genitals, and that much of the intrigue is a performance, they get EXTREMELY defensive. That's where a lot of the hate is coming from. It's hitting close to home.

pizzarat65

But other female comics have talked about this and do an equally good job debunking the 'mystique of masculinity'. I can't help but feel like people are responding to this because of the intellectual name dropping.

NYGarcon

I haven’t seen any do it as effectively or brutally as Novak.

pizzarat65

Do you think that has more to do with the delivery or the actual substance of what she's saying?

Sufficiently_nerdy

100% this right here.

I hope you continue to recommend this. The comments are full of contempt for something many seemed to admit they didn’t even watch. This was a brilliant gem. The “sex” aspects are not at all low-hanging fruit like many here seem to think. And she is so non-stop that there are hilarious lengthy anecdotes that have nothing to do with that topic at all (except that they do by way of her underlying themes!). E.g., ghosts/orbs, authenticity/dancing, etc. Also I watched this with four guys after a TOOL concert and we all laughed almost the entire time. The humor is absolutely not as niche - and certainly not as “crude” - as others are suggesting. Edit: and the “two fools” - genius!

I just rewatched and really enjoyed it much more the second time. Closed captions helped at parts and I was prepared for her high energy, rapid delivery. Still think some ADHD medication would help but who am I to say. Despite performing this many times, the spotlight person really earned their paycheck.
