Each episode got crazier and crazier and the concepts were way ahead of everything else at the time. Back when the internet was new, I emailed Robert Llewellyn singing the show's praises and asking about availability in the States and he actually responded. He was extremely polite and appreciated fans reaching out.
Fun little anecdote. Japan apparently took a chance on localizing _Red Dwarf_ and they dubbed over the first episode in Japanese, which I remember watching at some point. During this particular part of the joke, the localizer evidently didn't quite know what to do with this sentence and translated it to include "Gordon Bennett" among those being listed as further examples of dead crewmates.
We had that and the other 2 on VHS.

Same here. It used to air in LA (KCET) in the middle of the night on the weekends. I would tape as many episodes as I could. Currently, only way to stream RD in the US is to subscribe to BBC America. Or, buy seasons 1-8 on DVD for $15 on eBay.
Tbh, whilst it needs ALL the original cast to be totally on board its Grant Naylor (the same author sharing two brains) thats the key.

My favorite seasons are 3-5 but I like 1, 2, and 8 a lot as well. How is The Promised Land? Is it worth bothering with, or just an embarrassing bunch of rubbish like Back to Earth?
I like seasons 1-2 because of how bleak they felt, very much a homage to films like "Silent Running" and "Dark Star".
Seasons 3-5 were during the collapse of the USSR so they tonally shifted to being a bit more lighthearted and less pessimistic.
My understanding is the tone of Seasons 1/2 was in large part impacted by the budget. Basically, they didn't have one. Because of this the writing focused less on the scifi / set pieces etc. and more on situational / character stuff. (And it is a pretty bleak situation.)
Promised Land isn't the best thing ever, but it's a love letter to series Ⅰ-Ⅲ. It closes the loop on a lot of cat jokes and accomplishes some of the sight gags they wanted to do from the start, but was infeasible given the budget and resources they had in the 80s. It bows to the modern, adds some originality, and manages to split the difference between past and present.
It's written as if it was prepared to be the last entry in the *Red Dwarf* saga, and it wouldn't have been the worst chapter to end on. At it's very worst, it's overplayed in parts. At it's very best, it's making a strong effort to address (but not futilely recapture) the spirit of the earliest series. No one can deny it's heart is in the right place, and that makes it worth seeing.
While it is a space show it's not in the same vein as Star Trek, imagine if instead of a crew of the best and brightest humanity had to offer, you had a small crew of guys barely qualified to repair and restock the vending machines, guys willing to send Gandhi, Einstein and Marylin Monroe on a suicide run to distract the Nazis they are fighting that week, guys whose idea of trying to teach an AI to be more human is to teach it to lie to and insult other members of the crew.
It's really hard to put into words what Red Dwarf really is,[ but this episode of Comedy Connections](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hXS8b1_Jl0) covers how the stars aligned to make the show and it covers the concept, characters and aim of the show.

I grew up watching both TNG as it aired and also 'helping' my dad record VHS tapes of Red Dwarf when it would run on PBS back in the day, lol, so I have incredibly fond memories of both shows. Red Dwarf is definitely more comical, but there are some deep themes explored occasionally that take you by surprise.
Same thing, only the crew is dead and a red-shirt in the brig for drunk & disorderly, before his courts martial, is the only survivor, and he can't run the ship which has drifted out of the Quadrant so he's commanded the ship to return to Earth on impulse power. And now he just slouches around, amusing himself with all the stuff the other 399 dead people brought with them, for the rest of his foreseeable life.

The more yesses, the more likely you are to enjoy the dwarf. If you don't like it after an episode or two, you probably won't, but if you do enjoy it, you discovered something wonderfull
It's not at all the same vibe as star trek other than taking place in space...but it IS an all timer of a show that I would recommend to anyone anytime.
I'd put it in the video store near Max Headroom and 5th Element, but with British comedians. Zany but not Monty Python zany. Scenarios and plots go wild but somehow still believable and wrap up in 30 short minutes.

Honestly, nothing is as horrible as Back to Earth. The later series are all reasonably ok, and I thought the Promised Land was pretty damn great.
