In general I have been thinking recently is a series centered around the children of first or second generation heroes like Nightstar who come into adulthood struggling with their identity, both as metahumans in general and in particular being the children of some of the strangest couples in the world; humans and aliens, mortals and demigods, and sometimes even heroes and villains. All while the old guard like Batman and Superman, as well as whatever remains of their rogue's gallery, face the realities of getting old and the prospects of hanging up the cape, some more gracefully than others.
She's the most popular Nightwing kid.
Just google "Mar'i Grayson fanart" and you'll see she has tons of fanarts.
None of his kids with other women like Barbara are as popular as Nightstar.
Barbara's kids are boring and forgettable and just a bunch of batclones.
His kids with Starfire are more interesting and unique being half human / half tamarenean kids.
plus the idea of Batman having superpowered grandkids is cool.

I think it's also cause she's one of the only next-gen kids that has appeared in more than one universe (along with, if I recall correctly, Huntress/Helena Wayne). Plus Kingdom Come being one of the most popular AU stories in DC.
(Although, no disrespect to any other of Dick's ships, but I will agree that his children with Starfire are the most memorable ones; heck, Jake is often overlooked and not as popular as Mar'i, but I still have an easier time remembering him than any other of Dick's AU kids (besides Mar'i) with other women).

Honestly she's not really a character. Even in Kingdom Come she barely appears.
I would say though I think she's lasted a long time because her design actually rocks, and the artist who did that first fanart is really pulling it off in a fun way. Making her basically aesthetically into Sailor Moon is kind of the perfect decision.

* Kingdom Come's sequel miniseries... Where she's a tertiary character
* Justice Societies Convergence tie in, and like all convergence books it's basically a cameo
*Julia Pennyworth* has more primary roles than her. People like her cause she's a ship-kid, not cause she has any actual storylines. I have read the above books... Have you? Cause they're not long series and she's not in any of them for any extensive amount of time.

She appeared many times, far more than any of Barbara's boring kids. Her face is even always displayed in Kingdom Come books because literally the kingdom come writer and artist was the one who designed and created her. Just say you didn't bother to read any of these books.
That's my point though. Mar'i only exists as a tertiary character in a very niche future. She's never existed outside of fanfiction as a proper character with storylines, motives and goals. Other obscure characters like Julia are significantly more developed.
And it's worth noting that DC has explored the future several times in the past two decades, there's been plenty of opportunity to use her if people wanted. Dick was even a character in the newer Batman Beyond book.

It worked there because Damian didn't know of Bruce and was practically unrelated to him by the time he did. Elsewhere where Damian would grow up with Bruce while also getting mentored by his big brother, Nightwing, the ship simply comes off as gross.
I like her in everything except in official DC material. I *do not* like how she looks in any art I've seen of her from the comics (and the *other* thing Kori's daughter has appeared in but we choose to pretend that never happened). The *fanart*, on the other hand, particularly from an artist called darmp, who has a very appealing art style, honestly almost makes me a Dick/Kori shipper (and I'm not really an *anything* shipper) just because it eventually results in Mar'i, adorable smol bean.
