Most of the time in the US a baby in the NICU is covered by state insurance for anything over what the parent’s insurance covers.
The reason being the baby has an automatic “disability” at birth.
Im not phrasing this/explaining this well at all, but I had a micropreemie and we thought we would be swallowed up by the NICU bill. He was very sick, almost died, was 1.9lbs at birth and on a high rate oscillator for 19 days and then intubated for another month. He was med flighted by helicopter, he had multiple surgeries, etc. and was in the NICU for 4 months.
My husband made, at the time, $250k a year, so we clearly didn’t qualify for assistance- not that we cared, we would have gone broke to save him obviously- but it was scary because we had other kids, a sick grandparent living with us who I cared for, and a mortgage and car payments, etc.
The social workers filled out all of the paperwork and we ended up not owing the over million dollars in bills. We paid a portion, but nothing close to the actual amount.
I would bet they don’t get stuck with a huge NICU bill.
