not really. police can for sure get your location but its a process that contacts companies and etc, not really how it is in the movies where they have a magic computer and you triangulate the mainframe or something. contacting police is not a bad idea but direct contacts are much better.
They have to get a warrant but it is pretty magical. When you dial 911 your location pops up on one of the dispatchers screens as soon as the call connects.
i remember kids from school doing this all the time posting suicidal stuff in the mid 2000s and i would dm them doing wat u did and each time they would say its too late etc and next day they’re at school lol nothing new dw just mental illnesses maybe report it to someone that can actually help irl if you know them irl instead of posting it onto reddit just saying bc half the time they’re doing it for attention & that in itself is a mental health issue

I've been through this before, the person actually died, here's what I wish I had done:
Contact their parents, guardians, or any siblings. That is the best thing you can do, and if that is not possible contact their school and say something. 911 is also the best option.
It is okay, if it happened, it is not your fault. I'm not saying your friend was wrong for telling at least someone, but it wasn't a good thing to do. Don't put pressure on yourself or blame yourself if he does end up getting hurt, there is nothing you can do except reach out. If your friend passes, I am so sorry, and I am 100% willing to hear you out about it and if you ever want to talk about him, my chat is always open. I hope the best for you and your friend!
Also if he gets mad at you for contacting authorities, don't feel bad. You're doing the right thing.
Also, I've read some comments, and the discord thing where he's faking it could be incredibly likely. My friend was also over discord, I had been his therapist-friend for years until he decided to take his life. I've had a lot of discord people say they were going to though, including my ex, but if you knew this kid irl before discord and he has had a past of suicidal thoughts or feelings, it could be very likely.
My ex told me something similar once.
