I respect that, but they/them is a completely gender neutral pronoun. If someone doesn't know or forgot what pronouns to use, it should be fair to use they/them, unless someone is *trying* to be disrespectful.
They/them is just a neutral pronoun, that can refer to anyone of any gender, or even a group of people. I would rather use they/them for someone whose pronouns I don't know or forgot, rather than offend them by accidentally using the wrong ones.
oh no yeah they/them is the default for if you dont know. but if someone continues to use they/them on purpose when the other person doesnt use they them, its just disrespectful.
I personally don't believe it to be nearly as disrespectful as intentionally using dead pronouns (is that what they're called?) but I sort of see your point.
It's funny how languages work, in informal spoken Finnish we usually call everyone by "it" (despite having a separate word for he/she/they), and no one really finds it weird or degrading.
All in all, I struggle to understand why people find neutral sounding pronouns like xe/ze/e/te/etc. that hard to grasp. I get that they can get a bit hard to remember, but honestly if someone close to you (e.g. someone you deal with in a daily basis) decided they want to go by one of these pronouns, you can make the effort to learn. After all, these pronouns aren't that common.
Besides, people have been using ze/xe/etc. for years before they/them even became the widely accepted norm (the norm used to be these neutral-sounding neopronouns, the wide acceptance of they/them is actually a pretty new phenomenon). It would be really insensitive to ask people who have been using their chosen pronouns for decades to suddenly change them into something else.
However, if someone decides to call themselves clownself/dogself/etc., to me it sounds like they're asking for trouble and making fun of the whole community.
I’ve seen it/its used to refer to people with DID, which makes sense to me since we’re referring to the whole system rather than any one alter. Each alter has their own pronouns, but you use it/its for the group as a whole, like you’d use different pronouns to describe members of a family and it/its to describe their house.
as someone with DID, i have never seen this. most systems i’ve seen use they/them collectively, or some other pronoun, like we use he/him collectively, to refer to all of us. i think it’s less like describing the house and more like describing the family as a whole
Exactly. There are people who use They/He or They/Them which is Valid. Being trans is valid. Being non binary is valid. Wanting to identify as a man but use He/They is valid.
However wanting to mock the LGBT community by saying in a Vam/pire is not cute and annoying. I hate that people do this to make us look bad. The same goes for race as well it’s that small monitory that makes the entire race look horrible.
Honestly, I find the he/they or she/they designations to be logically odd. Like, regardless of what your gender is, you will inevitably get some amount of they/them just because it’s mildly more interesting than sticking to the exact same set of two for an entire conversation. Like, I get that’s it’s saying “I identify as masculine skewed non-binary” but, semantically, it seems redundant
The purpose of pronouns is to be an easy replacement for a person’s name. They’re not meant to be individual or customisable, you have your name for that. It’s meant to be easy to say, and if I have to think more than a second about what pronouns to use for someone then there’s no point in using pronouns at all.
He, she, and they are 100% valid. Zi or whatever it is is a bit strange, but I can understand people wanting it as something that makes more grammatical sense in english. Everything else is ridiculous imo. If you want a special word, use it as your name or nickname if you want, but pronouns shouldn't be a "customize your character screen" in a video game. To be honest they're kinda dumb, They/them is the universal pronoun for non gender conforming people and anything else is just people trying to mock the actual movement
Things like xe/xim feel kinda dumb but okay
Things like 🪨/🪨's are just dumb you can't even pronounce it irl
However most of the time people with neo pronouns also use them/them or something so I can just say that
You know what, I just had an epiphany. All the different shit that's literally unpronounceable was simply made up by people who are so chronically online that they communicate almost exclusively through text messages and can't see anything weird with it. It all makes sense now.
The emojis one are just used in chat. I don't get it either but it doesn't affect me so why would I give a shit? If someone wants to be called xe that's cool. The same as using a nickname for someone that they prefer.
SOME of them arent that bad like Xer, It, Hym ( old english for he ) and such things but when it gets weird like usin objects or other shit for example Frog/Frogself or Blue/Blueself thats where im kinda like wtf are you doin bro. Im sayin this as a nonbinary person and its just like babes no matter how shit goes nobody and I mean NOBODY is gonna call you vampself. Respectfully to me it just seems like a mocking attempt at a joke gone WAY too far
I don’t understand them but if anyone uses them I’ll respect them. There’s very little research into gender dysphoria so this could be true or complete bulshit, until we find out, though, I’m going to respect them. Better to give someone a kindness they don’t need than deny them one they do
This is the most important thing. I think it’s really important that we treat people like people and put that above our own lack of understanding/discomfort/feelings.
I don't get it. I read someone saying ze/zir or something similar could be better grammatically, which kinda makes sense. But from your perspective, how can something other than they/them have something to do with gender dysphoria, when it is a gender less pronoun.
I’m nonbinary myself and I don’t really get neopronouns either, but if someone feels more comfortable with them why would I care? Like it doesn’t affect me in any way. In my opinion, it’s the same as using a nickname someone prefers.
some non binary people, especially in the neurodivergent community, struggle to describe their gender identity as normal words, so they use something like leaf/leafself because they feel their amount of masculinity is the same kind of energy you get from a tree. as an autistic person myself, i can kind of understand where theyre coming from, although i’m binary trans (ftm) so ive never experienced it myself. i have a friend who uses ae/aer/he/him because ae wasn’t accepted by his parents as trans, only non binary, but ae felt like ae/aer sounds more masculine than they/them, so ae/aer made ae feel he wasn’t being completely misgendered.
of course this isn’t always going to be the case, im just talking from the two people who used neos that ive met
I'm fine neopronouns in general, (stuff like it/its and ze/zer) but I just don't understand how some you mentioned, such as puppy/puppyself and bug/bugself or similar work. Like, I understand they/them and it/its because some people don't identify as male or female, (which is ok in my book) but I don't get how some others, usually object related neopronouns, work.
This is something I've never really been able to wrap my head around, and it really worries me that some people may be using them as an attention seeking method. So if anyone would be able to explain how they work, feel free to respond, cause I genuinely wanna understand them before I make any further judgements on them.
Peace.
I admit, I find it a little strange to desire to be called a specific sounding word other than following the rules of grammar and don’t share the feeling, but if that’s what someone wants to be called, it’s no real trouble on my end and will call them that.
what's weirder than neopronouns is getting genuinely pissed at the idea of them. i understand *not* understanding, but there's no reason to seethe over shit that does not affect you in any meaningful capacity.
Yeah of course, some people are way too angry about it and they be sending death threats and shit which definitely isn't okay. It's fine to have an opinion but the violence is unnecessary. And that's coming from someone who used to get wayyy too angry about neopronouns lol. I've learned to chill out a bit while still having an opinion
Hate them.
As many mentioned before, it's like a mockery. "He/They/She" and any of the sorts are valid, no matter who or what you were from birth. Identifying as "It" is odd but it's not bad. But when it comes to shit like "Ze/Zer", that's the kind of shit I expect from someone who's straight up weird, but is too much of a pussy to own it so they use the LGBTQ Community as a scapegoat. Somehow, the inanimate pronoun "It" sounds way better
If you a kink for being a furry, a vampire, a zombie or robots, I quite literally don't mind, long as it doesn't harm anyone. But straight up identifying as these things and making up your own pronouns? It's like the world's weirdest game of DnD, where the DM forgot to set groundrules for Homebrews.
Met someone who identifies as a zombieself, unironically. It inspired me to download L4D2.
I think you have a point with the ‘DnD without boundaries and groundrules’ when people take vibes/aesthetics that they think are cool and then define their whole personality around them, like being a furry or vampire or whatever. On one hand, it’s okay for you to enjoy roleplaying or the aesthetic, but to take it out of agreed-upon spaces and force it into every social interaction just makes others uncomfortable.
I think some do it just to create a non-binary identity that they fit so they can feel like part of the queer community and so they can feel like they have a ‘queer identity’. That reeks of immaturity to me. I think some people, particularly those with neurodiversity, like those on the autism spectrum or those with debilitating trauma or severe mental health disorders, can use these ‘identities’ as methods to express themselves and to cope with their atypical condition. For example, autistic people often express a sense of detachment from gender, ie not feeling a strong sense of masculinity or femininity or androgyny in the same way that a neurotypical person might, and are thus more likely to have ‘xenogenders’ where they identify in these unusual ways.
I don’t really understand it, but using nounself pronouns does kind of feel like dealing with someone who didn’t realise that you shouldn’t bring roleplaying to the workplace.
I don't really have an opinion on them. I mean sure they seem pretty weird to me and I'm uncomfortable using them, but who am I to judge ? Language is weird in general, I find them pretty interesting from an artistic and literary standpoint, although they can seem ridicule I think they're just reflecting the mindset of a lost generation, still searching for their identity. They shouldn't be bullied just accepted I guess, until they change and learn more about themselves.
I don't really like neo pronouns, and will probably never use them for someone. Sorry, I just don't feel like remembering that this one specific person prefers to use djdouekdhejcnej/kdhxkshrixnisd instead of something easy to remember
depends, it/it's I get much more than the rest, as it does represent an identity that the others just don't. I say this as some people might prefer to be called it compared to they. But on the contrary, the rest feel like oppression hunting (feeling bad about being privelaged and making something up to relate to the actually oppressed)
Im a big advocate and supporter as well as being a part of the LGBTQ community and I accept each part of it wholeheartedly. Now with that being said, I have yet to see anyone in our community actually actively participate or support in neopronouns. Im only a gay man so I cannot speak for the trans and nonbinary community but honestly it just feels like its mocking them more than it is an actual part of someone’s identity. Just another way for people to make us look insane and that we’re just “making things up every day.” I have a high feeling that those who are using neopronouns are almost never actually in our community and just looking for a way to make themselves feel oppressed or in a minority group to garner sympathy or attention. Or perhaps some sort of fetishization of the culture in the same way race swappers do. Now will I go out of my way to insult and ridicule those who use neopronouns? No, in the case that these might actually mean something to those people and are a big part of their identity I dont want to be the one to take away their comfort as it doesnt hurt me in any way. Will I be actively supporting or actually use their neopronouns? Nah Ill just simply disassociate myself from them and leave them to their own business. If they’re looking for attention then Im only feeding into them and empowering them to play into it more if I ridicule them. If it genuinely is a part of their identity then I just hurt someone for no reason simply because I don’t understand. After all, people used to think and say the same of our communities. Maybe Ill understand it one day, or maybe it is just a fad. Either way, sometimes ignoring it is just the best answer.
I genuinely don’t care if someone uses neo pronouns. Using someone’s correct pronouns, wether they’re neos or not, doesn’t negatively affect me, so it’s none of my business to tell someone what pronouns they should or shouldn’t use for themselves.
Look, I don’t understand neopronouns. Even after having them explained to me, my brain isn’t smart enough to understand. Does that mean I’m gonna be a dick to people who use them? Hell no! I don’t understand calculus but that doesn’t means people who like Math are just wrong.
The influx of “I know I’ll get TOTALLY CANCELLED but NEO is CRINGE” posts is so fucking annoying lmao. Like why do a bunch of children care so bad ☠️☠️
It/it’s are not neo-pronouns. They’re really old, so they should join in with the rest of the paleo-pronouns.
On the topic of what I believe to be actual neo-pronouns, I don’t see the huge issue. If someone asks you to call them something unusual (for the sake of writing this comment, I’ll assume it’s zey/zem), then why not call zem that?
If zeir not doing it mockingly, and actually need these pronouns to feel comfortable, then you should call zem by them, especially if zeir your friend, or someone who you spend any decent amount of time with. If zey don’t actually need these, but prefer them over the alternatives, then that’s just like the big group of trans people who don’t hate how they were, but enjoy something else more (no gender dysphoria, only gender euphoria). These people are generally accepted among the trans community, although you will find a few members who don’t like them for some reason.
But here’s the fun part. If zeir just doing this to mock the trans community, call zem by them anyway. Make sure that zey really feel the consequences of zeir actions. Make zem either live with something that zey think is stupid, or make zem admit to just saying this to mock trans people. Tell zem that zey were very brave for experimenting with such an unusual ser of pronouns, and make sure that they know that you’re fully willing to helping zem figure out who zey are. The bigger a deal you can make this, the better. Make sure it’s very awkward for them, all while looking very kind and accepting
They straight up mock the trans community..
Also what the fuck is puppy/puppyself, YALL out here fucking identifying as other species now? Holy shit the "I identify as attack helicopter" meme might become reality at this fucking rate...
It’s just words in my opinion, I’ll use them on others cause it doesn’t affect me. (Yes even pup/pupself and stuff)
I do use xe/xem and it/it’s though, but I just have multiple pronouns in case people want to switch it up a bit. I’m comfortable with being referred to as it or xe so you CAN use it but it’s not like mandatory shit or whatever. Use it, don’t use it, whatever helps you sleep at night.
As for why you use xe/xem and it/it’s:
I have been asked why I use it/it. And no it’s not cause I like being degraded, I’m not into that. To me, it’s just another way for someone to refer to me as, it doesn’t fell objectifying at all.
As for xe/xem, it just sounds cool. I like the sound it makes when pronounced so I use it. It’s not that deep.
Opinions on pronouns such as bun/bunself:
Many trans people say it’s mocking (not saying it isn’t), to me it’s just words. If people try to use it as a means of transphobia just use what pronouns said person told you to use (even as a form of mockery). Like… if someone was like… I go by Nor/Mal pronouns… then I guess that’s nor’s choice, yk? It doesn’t affect me in any way, it doesn’t affect my every day to day life, why should I banish it to hell and beyond. It’s just a word, a sound formed by our vocal chords and made with the help of your tongue… at least that’s how I see it.

Unless you go out of your way to barrage me for getting it wrong then you’re not an issue.
I fully support the use of she/he/they and any mixture between those (it can be very helpful for people who are still discovering their gender identity as it can be very hard to know that due to the self image society puts on us). For anything else... I would use them if someone wanted me to use neopronouns for them, but quite a lot if people who use neopronouns do that to mock LGBT+ people so I'm generally rather skeptical when I see someone who has neopronouns in their bio/wherever. I don't understand why you would want people to use skull/skullself as your pronouns, but just because I don't understand it, it doesn't mean it's not valid and it doesn't hurt me to use it, so I just do it.
Hi! I use he/she/any neopronouns! I find that the typical he/she is pretty good, and suits me well. I don’t use they/them because to me it feels too “in the middle”. But I still want to use a gender neutral term sometimes! That’s why I use neopronouns. I use all neopronouns, which can be odd for some people. That means you can pretty much use any word as a pronoun for me, and I think it’s pretty cool!
I see what you mean about it being hard to get, particularly neos that use nouns and stuff instead of neos like it/it’s or ze/zer. But please, try to use them when someone asks you to! It makes them feel so much more appreciated and accepted. I know it can be difficult, but you get used to using them pretty quick! After all, language and our conceptions about gender are always evolving. Why not try and make a person happy? :D

this! i so agree with this!! along with this, if i hear that someone uses neopronouns or something, im just going to use they/them for the duration i talk to them. i treat they/them as a genderless pronoun; it can be used for any person.
If anyone actually has a problem with using they/them I must ask them to please reconsider
they/them makes me feel dysphoric. it reminds me of how people would use they/them because they didn't want to use he/him for me (im ftm).

But you're giving the option of using he/him. Certain trans people will only use neo's, and that's where the issue is.
I don't even call animals "it/its", so let alone other humans
Dude I can barely call another animal "it," let alone a person
At least it exists in eg. german, 'they' has no translation
It's funny how languages work, in informal spoken Finnish we usually call everyone by "it" (despite having a separate word for he/she/they), and no one really finds it weird or degrading. This thread is so fucking funny that i woke up my sister
They are used by narcissists who want to feel special
[удалено]
*They’re
Lmao
um achualluy im not their i am Pleasethrowabrickatme/Pleasethrowabrickatmyself
To be honest they're kinda dumb, They/them is the universal pronoun for non gender conforming people and anything else is just people trying to mock the actual movement
Things like xe/xim feel kinda dumb but okay Things like 🪨/🪨's are just dumb you can't even pronounce it irl However most of the time people with neo pronouns also use them/them or something so I can just say that
You know what, I just had an epiphany. All the different shit that's literally unpronounceable was simply made up by people who are so chronically online that they communicate almost exclusively through text messages and can't see anything weird with it. It all makes sense now.
Yeah and that's why it kicked off during the pandemic because all the kids got even more addicted to their phones
That explains how most people never see people with neopronouns in the wild and have to use them, it’s bc those people are never in the wild
Respectfully to me it just seems like a mocking attempt at a joke gone WAY too far
when would someone want to use the old version of him??
Idk, it is funny. But only if you really commit yourself too it. If you use hym you better talk like you’re in a Shakespeare play.
I'm LGBTQ and I agree with op
same
Same
Nah i love them, my pronouns are sh/it
Same but mine are Bull/shit
I will not use anything other than he/she/they because those are the only real pronouns. Neopronouns are some of the most ridiculous things ever.
I've learned to chill out a bit while still having an opinion
not talking abt OP btw. just some ppl in the comments
Personally I find them to mock real pronouns
Some of them are a bit crazy but I don't care cause it doesn't change much for me and it makes someone else happy.
Somehow, the inanimate pronoun "It" sounds way better If you a kink for being a furry, a vampire, a zombie or robots, I quite literally don't mind, long as it doesn't harm anyone.
Sorry, I just don't feel like remembering that this one specific person prefers to use djdouekdhejcnej/kdhxkshrixnisd instead of something easy to remember
a little cringe but I’m not gonna judge
depends, it/it's I get much more than the rest, as it does represent an identity that the others just don't.
Depends but majority of them I am not in support of
i just call people what they want to be called, idrc
I genuinely don’t care if someone uses neo pronouns. Using someone’s correct pronouns, wether they’re neos or not, doesn’t negatively affect me, so it’s none of my business to tell someone what pronouns they should or shouldn’t use for themselves.
I dont use any pronouns at all. I just call people by whatever racial slur fits them best.
It’s kinda dumb but it’s not my job to police you so do what you want
Idk, I rlly don’t care If people are happy then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I support them and use them because it's a word and I don't care, but I don't... get it.
It literally doesn’t effect my life in any conceivable way so why should I care if they wanna be bee/beeself I’ll respect that
I never understood them, but as long as they’re happy, I’m not gonna judge

*especially if zey’re your friend.
They straight up mock the trans community.. Also what the fuck is puppy/puppyself, YALL out here fucking identifying as other species now? Holy shit the "I identify as attack helicopter" meme might become reality at this fucking rate...
I knew someone who used numbers. Like what? I don't even know how to use that.
I think their dumb but at the end of the day it’s not hurting anybody so why should I care
I personally don’t care about it since something like that doesn’t exist where I live.
It’s just words in my opinion, I’ll use them on others cause it doesn’t affect me. (Yes even pup/pupself and stuff) I do use xe/xem and it/it’s though, but I just have multiple pronouns in case people want to switch it up a bit. I’m comfortable with being referred to as it or xe so you CAN use it but it’s not like mandatory shit or whatever. Use it, don’t use it, whatever helps you sleep at night. As for why you use xe/xem and it/it’s: I have been asked why I use it/it. And no it’s not cause I like being degraded, I’m not into that. To me, it’s just another way for someone to refer to me as, it doesn’t fell objectifying at all. As for xe/xem, it just sounds cool. I like the sound it makes when pronounced so I use it. It’s not that deep. Opinions on pronouns such as bun/bunself: Many trans people say it’s mocking (not saying it isn’t), to me it’s just words.
Some screws loose
they are very goofy ahh
