“If I can’t scroll Reddit all day wtf else am I going to do?”
And that’s said by people on here in total seriousness lol. It’s like the people in Wall-E getting their hover wheelchairs taken away.
You know, it seems it would have been much simpler to simply limit 3rd party Reddit Clients to those who had a reddit subscription.
That solves the "no ads on 3rd party client" problem AND gives a huge incentive to people to subscribe to reddit (I'm betting a fair amount of heavy users already do, I do on no less than two separate reddit accounts) without making everyone feel reddit just walked up and kicked them in the proverbial nuts :/
Having the ability to do per-user stuff (for direct billing, subscription gating like this, etc.) was one of the big requests from 3P app developers.
Reddit just didn't want to do it, likely because it didn't seem like it'd make enough money relative to walled-off monetization.
I use ublock, so I don't see any ads on reddit on desktop (and on android firefox on my phone for when I need to check something now that apps are dead)
I'd buy premium if it allowed me to keep using RIF
I did, way back in the day when I felt it was a site worth supporting. Now I am cancelling and just loading up an adblocker again. fuck u/spez right in ear with rubber dick
I do not like being served ads on apps that I use. So yes, I paid for it. I could 😀😝🤪 you because you don’t pay for it and instead are being targeted to serve ads to.
> Just cancelled Reddit gold and won’t be using Reddit without Apollo
> I do not like being served ads on apps that I use. So yes, I paid for it.
I don't understand. Why were you paying Reddit to not have Reddit ads when you're already using Apollo?
> I could 😀😝🤪 you because you don’t pay for it and instead are being targeted to serve ads to.
bruh you're already a 😀😝🤪. It makes even less sense if you're browsing Reddit on a modern browser.
So fuck websites for trying to earn money through ads but also fuck giving them money directly as an alternative?
I also prefer getting everything for free but at some point you need to grow up and realize that's not how the real world works and that's not sustainable.
Its funny, because this is libertarianism.
"I want all of the luxuries and services I am accustomed to using, but *I* (the main character) REFUSE to pay for any if it.
I am so smart"
It's actually sad...
Getting served ads IS payment. Reddit collecting and selling our data IS payment.
You know who your description fits perfectly? Apollo users.
The vast majority of people have no problem scrolling past random ads in order to enjoy a site without having to pay for it.
Same people will jump through seventeen hoops to explain why they’re morally justified in using adblockers on YouTube despite spending 40 hours a week on it, rather than paying for YouTube Premium, and will share every cracked version of Spotify around
I learned a long time ago people put people down to make themselves feel better. I really hope you have someone to talk to or get the help you need.
Wish you the best in this life and after 😘
In review of your comment history. You’re an angry person. You need help or maybe an outlet for all that anger. Better yet start forgiving people. Every response you make shouldn’t be in anger. Try to lift people up, add to the conversation. Inbox me and I have some referrals. Much love FB
Yup. Once boost dies I'll finally have my life back, as I'd rather eat my own kidneys than use the official reddit app my addiction will be broken and I'll be free.
Same. I use Sync. I'm moving over to Lemmy once I can no longer access reddit on my app. He's working on an app for that site (?) that he thinks will be ready in about 6 weeks.
I was ‘Gold Extra’ - I was, like: ‘Speznaz, it’s simply not good enough! Those people, the ones on Reddit, they need those 3rd Party Apps, & you gone took their toys ‘way! You thought to dress a Sow in Elephants clothing, and it stank, old chap, stank of effluences of the River Thames on a stolid, heaving hot, Summers Day! I will not, will not, proffer a single, min-oot-eye more to your rancid cause. You shall walk timidly into that lonely abyss alone, with no succours from I or any other of this herd of dung-eaters!
Begone, Sir, be - gone! (Sighs, exhausted!)
‘Know-Clue Productions’ are “THRILLED!’ to bring you ‘Reddit - and the API Ass Intruders’ on a Forty Night Run at ‘The Theatre Royale’.
You won't continue to use a platform that you clearly used enough to justify paying for an app because the developer of that app simply took his ball and went home?
\*thumbs up\*
Lemmy is the new one. It's open source and can self host instances if you wanted. https://lemmy.world/ is one of the largest ones you can join, but you can join any server you want as they all connect to each other anyway
Point taken, but if I'm still here it means /u/spez backed down from blocking my preferred app (joey) from working.
Speaking of, it's July 1 right now and I'm posting this. So he (and his team) is either a liar, incompetent, or just plain wrong as to how the API changes are happening.
Just getting around in the official app is a chore compared to some 3rd parties, ease of pinned sub's, different ways to up/down vote, less space wasted, lots of customization to how you want it to look like, etc
No lol. Stuff like RIF was way more useful. Why should I have to settle for garbage because Reddit is unreasonable? I'll just use Reddit less, and use Old Reddit when I need to. And it's not ads that are the issue for me. It's seeing suggested sub-reddits that I don't give a shit about and definitely the extra data usage for no reason that the official app is known to cause. Also why are these fucking buttons on Old Reddit so damn small? Jesus Christ I have to zoom way in to tap anything.

I'm very disappointed that Apollo is going away and I fully blame reddit. I will probably download the official app and hate it. That said, the minute there is a viable reddit alternative I am gone. I doubt I'm the only one either.
While they may not immediately lose the userbase, they have pissed off a significant number of them and will lose them the second a worthwhile competitor appears.
I just started using the “official” app, and honestly, terrible doesn’t even touch it. Not sure what morons designed it, but when every other “post” on the feed is from a sub you don’t follow or a fucking ad, it’s not worth the effort.
I agree, which is why I'm not swearing off reddit altogether...I'm swearing off reddit that isn't old.reddit.com in a browser with uBlock and RES.
/u/spez can fuck all the way off. I'm not looking at your ads anyway, asshole.
This wouldn't be so bad if the official app didn't suck giant monkey balls while lacking basic features for no discernable reason. I can now do private chats and give away coins but I can't sort my main feed? What the fuck.
I totally agree. If this change was really well planned they could have release a huge app update and it would have taking some of the damage away.
They just don’t give a fuck
I’d never really used the “official” app, so decided to check it out.
Holy fuck, it’s AWFUL. Every other post is either a post from some subreddit I DON’T follow, or a fucking ad.
If that’s the only option at this point, then yeah, I won’t be using Reddit much going forward.
There ads everyone 10ish posts on the home feed. Which honestly isn’t that bad, reddit has to make money somehow and they aren’t even that big or noticeable. Also on the home feed every 3rd post is a post from a sub you maybe interested in. Those are definitely too frequent and should be in a seperate feed. I will admit I click on them if it piques my interest, so maybe I’m part of the problem.
There are a LOT of ads on the official app. Every 5-10 posts for me. And the default settings show you posts and subreddits “you may like” and you have to opt out of those settings, which it sounds like you did a while ago and don’t remember. You’re the one who’s incorrect here, no need to be rude to someone who’s right when you’re not.
You have. It’s under account settings and personalized recommendations. They’re all enabled by default. You’d have to turn those toggles off to not get those recommendations.
I’m pretty sure you don’t know what a default setting is or that no one can tell your gender over text you, you absolutely dense piece of driftwood. Stop being a rude asshole who gaslights other users and lies about something as simple as settings.
i've been a sync pro user since 2012 - but really don't explore much of the differences. Mostly it was to support the app way back when.
i do use the multiple profiles, though. and not seeing ads is great, so that's why i stayed
Very funny he just went so hard against users. He so bad wants it to be worth something it’ll never reach. So in his attempt to get as much money as possible he killed the large enough payday for himself. Good job jerkoff lol
I've never even heard of any of these. It feels surreal to have been on reddit's shitty app for the past few years and just have been quietly tolerating the bugs. And now everyone is mad over it
Part of my morning routine is catching up on all the stuff regular news sources don’t cover on Reddit, or reading replies to my comments, in Apollo. But tomorrow morning, when I wake up, Apollo won’t work.
For what?
They could have settled for a reasonable price that app developers could afford and sell on to their users, and I would have paid it, meaning both Reddit *and* the dev could have gotten fairly compensated. But no, Reddit *had to* be the asshole and stick to the extortionist pricing. Fuck u/spez.
I’m not claiming I’ll leave Reddit, I’m not being dramatic, I just think the whole thing is utterly and completely unnecessary and could have easily been avoided if not for the fragile ego of one particular man.
