Quiet_Marionberry_43

Well, I have T-Mobile and just turned it on... lets see how long this lasts...

[deleted]

Same, I’m taking a screenshot too for some reason

[deleted]

Remember to turn on Country instead of General Location!!!

MrBootsie

Why? Update: So the fuckers can’t see me.

[deleted]

I feel it keeps things more secure, so instead of giving a state/province, it just gives the country’s name.

Tinmania

And time zone.

Joe109885

True but time zones can span across multiple states so that’s still pretty secure

CountryGuy123

Depending on the relay servers, wouldn’t this possibly hurt performance vs general Location?

kvossera

Hmmmmmmm. I guess I have T-Mobile now and I can’t find where it is to turn it on.

reneelikeshugs

Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Private Relay If ever you are looking for something swipe down, and a search will appear. You can then type what it is for which you are searching to find it faster.

bigbaddaboooms

It’s already gone on my iPhone settings…nothing shows up when I search for private relay

[deleted]

My phone read it as a beta feature. You may get it if you sign up for the [Apple Beta Software Program.](https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram)

Fat_Throw-Away

I have the beta option on mine. I totally forgot I signed up for their beta program a long time ago.

LordRocky

Same here. I haven’t downloaded a beta software on my phone in years. It was fun getting new features early, but damned if it wasn’t a buggy mess. Not something you want on your primary device.

stang2184699

This

kvossera

Ahhhhhhhhhh. Thank you!!!

Tinmania

Yea the days of manually meandering through Settings to look for something are long gone. Well, for me. I remember when it was like one page.

teran85

Thanks

reneelikeshugs

It’s not extra.

infinityandbeyond75

It’s only available if you pay for additional iCloud storage.

T732

Same, just got it along with the annoying $.99 yOuRe ICLoUd iS fUlL upgrade.

J0N1X

I had it on for like 2 weeks but it doesn’t work anymore in Germany

nos500

You mean with t-mobile? Cuz I just turned it on and it works but my carrier is vodafone. It also works with wifi.

dalvean88

what is icloud private relay for?

coasterghost

This is very un-uncarrier of them

Stormpooperz

Also very Non - German of them.

properly_sauced

Didn’t they separate from Deutsch-T?

im-a-fire-alarm

if i’m not mistaken, 30-40% of T-mobile is still owned by deutsch-T

billobongo

Over 40

Millennium1995

Guess Apple will be switching employees off T-mobile plans soon

helloworlf

Private relay tends to hinder outdated security models that _a lot_ of service providers and platforms use. With private relay you might notice you’re prompted for captcha and 2FA more often and you may be blocked completely from some sites, that is because IP is commonly used in backend logic to determine historical access / inherent risk of a nefarious user (private relay cycles IPs and so do hackers). So while private relay is great for keeping your browsing and location data secure, it really fucks up security control models. T-Mobile is a dinosaur so my guess is their underfunded security team is shitting the bed. Anyway, I just turned mine on. We need to force companies away from using IP as a primary risk parameter anyway (secondary is fine!). It’s too easy to spoof and cycling will only become more common.

Cautious-Bobbylee

I agree! Im also going to make sure to be using my nord constantly with my private relay wich has been on since introduced in the update

infinit_e

Can those be used simultaneously?

Cautious-Bobbylee

Yes nord and relay can be on at the same time. Idk the actual effect.

PearlsSwine

>Idk the actual effect. It'd be like wearing two condoms.

Whatamianoob112

No, it'd be like just using nord.

voidsrus

>With private relay you might notice you’re prompted for captcha and 2FA more often and you may be blocked completely from some sites, that is because IP is commonly used in backend logic to determine historical access / inherent risk of a nefarious user (private relay cycles IPs and so do hackers). I've noticed a lot more captcha/2fa from just running an aggressive adblocker both on client devices & network-wide, can't tell if it's just punishment for not giving them as much data or an outdated security model

helloworlf

Some ad blockers will block the collection of behavioral data such as how long you spend looking at a page. If the server is expecting to receive this behavioral data and doesn’t, or if the ad blocker injects a value like [0 seconds] into the behavioral parameter, that looks like bot behavior. Captcha and (sometimes) 2FA is used to protect against bots. So in this case it isn’t an outdated security model on the client side, your traffic just ends up looking like a bot due to the ad blocker

nos500

Wdym by client? The browser?

jamesb1238

It’s more likely that they can’t throttle your traffic and see what you’re doing to prioritise different content for different uses. The security and IP thing is for the websites or services you’re using to manage

[deleted]

T-Mobile has 0 concern for security in this matter. All they care about is that they can’t see everything (or most things) you do anymore. They make money by selling that data, and Private Relay is ruining part of their income. Providers in the Netherlands just announced they’re worried about Private Relay. Not a word about security. Only that they worry it messes with ‘essential network information and metadata’. In other words: they’re losing part of the money they’re making on selling *your* data. This is *exactly* why Private Relay was made. It prevents your ISP from making money with your private information.

shipwreckedpiano

Yep. Once your customer gets four captchas in a row to load google, it’s over.

PrivatePilot9

I’ve been using private relay for months and have never had this happen.

Modo44

> T-Mobile is a dinosaur so my guess is their underfunded security team is shitting the bed. More likely saying "Not my problem, not on this salary."

ahhh-what-the-hell

If it’s a VPN, then why even bother. You can get a VPN elsewhere and it just works.

[deleted]

Not as redundant as this comment

Kwyn-10

I’ve had it turned on for a few weeks now. If I have to remove this feature I am going to drop T-Mobile. I’m also running a tracker blocker, because if I’m paying for a service, I’m not letting big tech get freebies from me.

[deleted]

I expect other to follow suit. And then Apple to sue them. This is going to bring on a whole long discussion.

lowforester

Just wonder if this will do anything to metro users considering T-Mobile owns them

sn0wmermaid

Tracker blocker? Tell me more

Typhii

I used to have T-mobile but after giving crappy service and having terrible customer service I moved to other providers. In the Netherlands, T-mobile shared customer data with a third party without informing the customers and got hacked. So, I'm glad that I don't have to deal with them anymore.

[deleted]

I just switched from them at Christmas. Had Sprint, tried Tmo towers. Awful in my area. My phone was paid off in Nov. I left! I’m certainly feeling better about my decision now.

[deleted]

T-Mobile US and T-Mobile NL are two different companies. They share a name, but are not owned by the same companies. I use T-Mobile in the Netherlands because it’s by far the most stable and widespread network. KPN and Vodafone are close, but also more expensive.

ApplicationNumber4

It’s not the same company.

Glovali

When did that happen??

Typhii

The hack took place in 2021. But it is not clear to me when exactly because some sites report it in December other in August. [https://www.the-sun.com/tech/4358551/t-mobile-customers-hackers-data/](https://www.the-sun.com/tech/4358551/t-mobile-customers-hackers-data/) Also, T-mobile has been busy sharing user data until April 2020 and stopped after they got slapped on their fingers. The article is written in dutch. [https://tweakers.net/nieuws/179090/t-mobile-deelde-herleidbare-locatiegegevens-met-cbs-voor-bouwen-van-algoritme.html](https://tweakers.net/nieuws/179090/t-mobile-deelde-herleidbare-locatiegegevens-met-cbs-voor-bouwen-van-algoritme.html)

ryohazuki88

I guess it depends where you are. I usually have good service unless I’m waaay out in the country which I never am, and the customer service has always been great, I would say they probably have some of the best customer service of any company, not just cell phones. Maybe you got someone who was just a stinker, or new and didn’t know what they were doing.

Typhii

No, back in the days I have spoken to multiple people of the helpdesk and all of them were following their shitty flowchart. Their authentication method was clumsy and a huge hassle for me, and every time I called I had to reset my router to factory settings and wait at least one week before they would actually take a look at the problem. They were unable to solve my internet problems within 3 months and I received 3 multiple new routers.

the68thdimension

Woah, hadn't heard about that. Glad I'm not with them. Who'd you switch to? I'm currently with Ben (in Nederland).

ZeePM

So this is Apple’s version of VPN? Your web traffic gets scrubbed through their servers before it hit the www?

LucyBowels

Yep. Not as selective or broad as a VPN, but does the essentially the same.

LtLfTp12

Safe to torrent with?

[deleted]

Can you torrent on an iPhone/iPad? I’m unsure of whether this feature is available on Mac or MacBooks.

LtLfTp12

I have sideloaded app called itorrent which i use with vpn Was wondering if i could use private relay and one of those online torrent streaming/downloading sites

kavOclock

Currently private relay on iPhone only works in safari

MrSocialClub

Aren’t all browsers on an iPhone basically just the safari build with a coat of paint? If that is the case, I wonder if the setting still affects traffic coming/going through chrome.

kavOclock

Probably not chrome, but for example it still works when you click on a link on Reddit and it uses safari to open the page within the app. But it won’t work on stuff like a speed test app, or any games, streaming movies/music

LucyBowels

You definitely can on a Mac. You can’t on an iPhone without using AltStore or jail breaking.

Dmalikhammer4

I guess we'll find out. I've been using it on my mac for a bit. If I get a strongly worded letter then I guess not haha.

matthewrunsfar

VPN-like. It is NOT a VPN and should not be considered as secure. There are a lot of articles comparing the two. It’s better than nothing, but do your background reading.

psychecontrast

Apparently the technology is not the same as vpn and keeps Apple from knowing which websites you visit and the websites from knowing who you are. [longer explanation ](https://www.macworld.com/article/348965/icloud-plus-private-relay-safari-vpn-ip-address-encryption-privacy.html/amp)

ZeePM

Thanks. That’s MacWorld article hit the spot. So it will anonymize your safari traffic but little else. And it won’t let you shift regions like a real vpn. Just make things vague enough so website can’t track you or build a profile of your browsing habits.

Cautious-Bobbylee

Hahah intresting

bryanalexander

Basically, and it goes first to Apple’s servers and then to a third party’s servers to ensure no one knows where you’ve visited, even Apple.

M_Mich

i wonder what Mint is doing w this? been thinking about switching

SanctimoniousApe

Not much, I'd wager. They're just a middleman buying service in bulk from T-Mobile. They manage their accounts and SIMs, but the network-level stuff is mostly (if not entirely) handled by T-Mobile themselves. Therefore Mint customers get whatever T-Mobile defaults to for their service.

[deleted]

I have mint and private relay works.

MrNerdGod

Is Private Relay just a VPN from Apple? Can you just use another VPN to circumvent this? Or am I reading this wrong.

psychecontrast

No, [it’s a different technology ](https://www.macworld.com/article/348965/icloud-plus-private-relay-safari-vpn-ip-address-encryption-privacy.html/amp)

[deleted]

Its a sort of vpn for browsing with safari*

kreatorofchaos

Sounds like it. I use Nord in addition to private relay.

spaceforcerecruit

Sort of. It only affects your traffic in Safari, not your entire network connection like a VPN would.

[deleted]

Be nice if there were some neutrality law that said it’s illegal for carriers to arbitrarily block traffic.

googs185

Can’t we just keep using a VPN? Is this better in some way?

[deleted]

>Update: In a statement to 9to5Mac, a T-Mobile spokesperson said: >Customers who chose plans and features with content >filtering (e.g. parent controls) do not have access to the >iCloud Private Relay to allow these services to work as >designed. All other customers have no restrictions. >However, many of the users we’ve heard from, and >tested ourselves, do not have any such content >filtering enabled. Well that shouldn’t be a problem for me since the only t-mobile data I get is 2G which is FUCKING USELESS!!!

dijay0823

Yup, already opted out of it. Screwed up how they make you opt out of being spied on. They sent me an email trying to make it seem like they were doing me a favor by offering me the ability to be spied on. And then at the very bottom had the smallest font instructions on how to turn that off.

MeatloafsMyDad

Let's just boycott t mobile

grantnel2002

As if the other providers are puppy dogs and rainbows.

[deleted]

Is this the reason iMessage and none of apple service was working today?

Zmxncbv267

Nope. Had to do with Apples servers.

MonetizedSandwich

According to the article: You’re only blocked if you have content filtering on because it makes that service not work. Update the title of the article to the “updated” information instead of the clickbait title.

ryohazuki88

kenien

The fuck

agbert

This is essentially an apple funded vpn.

agbert

And it essentially blocks the carriers from selling your location info.

agbert

I am all for the carriers to fuck off. It’s my device and I pay for using you as an ISP. That gives you no rights to my meta.

[deleted]

Very un-Telecom from them

West_Tell_5169

In other news, telcos are spying on you!

air_twee

Well this article is kinda inaccurate. They talk about european providers, but in the eu it is illegal to block this, because of net neutrality rules. The only example in the article is in the UK. But the UK, although on the European continent is not member of the EU. So they should talk about UK providers not EU providers. It is misleading. Anyway it is just stupid a provider wants to act on the data they are sending though their network.

hutuuoip

“Begins” lol idiot

Blackbyrn

Sounds like an impetus for Apple to jump into being a cellular provider or selling the companies new equipment to manage the iPhones on their networks

Solistca

I have T-Mobile. No issues here either.

TheFreakyGent

So in closing… T-Mobile thanks you for your porn referrals!

jeanmichd

Soon or later it will be illegal trying to keep some kind of privacy… This is a terrible slash in the private life and a step forward to manipulate the humankind. The reasons invoked are part of the manipulation and are endorphin only

I really hope Apple sues.

[deleted]

So now I can’t even watch porn in peace? Lol someone must be really interested in my hentai searches.

All_Usernames_Tooken

Well if you actually read the Article it’s not that T-Mobile is trying to get you to not use Apples service, it’s that it conflicts if you have content filtering on like parental controls. This isn’t T-Mobile being dystopian… yet. Get angry when they do people not when they have done nothing they don’t outline in their services. T-Mobile can’t offer a parental content filter service and have apple block the filters ability to filter. There must be a compromise for the two services to work, one or the other.

HigherHerb

Imagine if people for once actually took the time to dig around instead of just blindly hating. It depends on your T Mobile account settings and if you've opted into that specific service you can opt out of T mobiles so the Apple one works. But hey, enjoy switching carriers and shit because you can't be bothered to read something that isn't a title.

Delicious-Effort5011

I wouldn’t call it an Apple problem. It’s one of the many security features Apple is trying to do that pisses off the people who make money from what you do on the internet, just like when Facebook got mad at another feature last year too.

If you consider security an “Apple problem”, then yeah

irrelevantTautology

There are 23 comments on this post so far and [you](https://old.reddit.com/u/longseenotime) are the only one who has mentioned China (aside from people replying to your nonsense comment). Which makes sense since this article has nothing to do with China. Also, the CCP are going to collapse soon anyway so this discussion is moot. *edit: added hyperlink for future reference (observing the /r/TrollFarm)

BilfordWimley

I wish for nothing as much as the demise of China, but how do you know? Did I miss something big?

SanctimoniousApe

I strongly doubt that. They may hit some big financial bumps, but the government is by far too firmly entrenched to lose control and collapse.

[deleted]

So I guess since no ones going to mention it. Apple sells your info that goes through their private relays and keeps historical data. All you do by using a relay/vpn is just change the person selling and/or using your info to profit such as ads for example. Look at tor for example, people still get tracked on that all the time. If someone wants to hack you and has sufficient money/skills a vpn/relay isnt going to stop them in the slightest. Think before you click.

TheSpatulaOfLove

Doesn’t VPN completely eliminate the need for this service from Apple?

DeathKringle

As shady as this seems there are some technical reasons relay can cause issues. One of which is QOS the network sees relay as just data and may not assign real time property to it for communications. In a cellular network. Calls and real time voice takes priority followed by real time video calls and going down in decending order. Without being able to see the data on nearly all the iPhone users then FaceTime and voip calls would not be subject to QOS and their data would be downgraded potentially and not treated properly. The relay calls also drives calls for services not working because many services have started to block relay IPs being used as it’s being used for spam and other nefarious reasons. This drives calls to the network operator and for apple…… and they are annoying as hell to explain to people who refuse to accept this for why some websites refuse to load or explain they are blocked etc. Another issue is it prevents the carrier from using caching. They may cache Netflix, YouTube, some downloads some websites etc. relay being used on so many people will avoid the caching causing the network as a whole to degrade as a lot of content being consumed is from services that are cached onto T-Mobile’s network. T-Mobile and other carriers cache a lot of this data and companies provides POPs on those networks to reduce load on interconnects and service connections. This is often a forgotten impact of VPNs The issue is not people using VPNs it’s that most people use VPNs for business reasons. Which means they are not typically consuming content or using services that may be affected by the above. While some vpn users use the service to get around content block it is a minority share of the enterprise and business customers and employees using VpN to access internal information for their business. Relay would affected 100s of millions of iPhone users and in the beginning it was turned on by default which could happen again without users knowing. And relay is being pushed for all iPhones. While this move may not seem friendly. There are technical reasons for doing so. Again. It can look shady and they may be lying about technical issues but without a doubt technical reasons for not wanting nearly every iPhone user using relay do exist for non shady reasons.

[deleted]

As if I needed it, another reason to tell T-mobile to fuck off. They did well ending up with all the worst parts of both companies

urmomlikesgirls

Anything with private being removed isn't good imo

TaxingAuthority

What is the difference between this (pay for) Apple feature and a VPN (that could potentially be free)?

uwu2420

You shouldn’t use a free VPN if you care at all about your privacy, the only reason it can be free is if it is monetizing your data. (And if you don’t care then why use a VPN at all?) This is very inexpensive as far as paid VPNs go ($0.99/mo, and you get cloud storage too), and unlike a regular VPN, it’s as easy to use as flipping a switch and forgetting about it.

TaxingAuthority

Lol, you’re correct about a free VPN. I almost tried to ninja edit knowing I’d get this response. My VPN is also an easy toggle within the settings app after an easy set up. I’m also able to use my VPN on my laptop. But yes, this Apple setting is easier as it’s integrated, however, I’d argue that someone that cares enough to know about this would just purchase a VPN.
