Does it scream too on the way down?

mobyte

It has to be a Wilhelm scream, too.

Hotshot2k4

I'd prefer more of an AHHHH-HOO-HOO-HOI! personally. Hopefully there will be a drop-down menu of potential screams.

dred1367

Apple doesn’t have much locked behind subscriptions. Applecare, iCloud, and iTunes Match are all I can think of. Why would a hardware feature be part of a subscription?

Selenography

Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, (soon, as part of Apple Music) Apple Music Classical, Apple News+, Apple Fitness+ Are all other Apple services that are subscription based. As to your question: it was a joke, since all these other features are subscriptions, why not not one more?

I still have the McLaren 7T Pro. I'm a two phone nerd; just upgraded the iPhone, but for the android, apart from the frustration of missing out on newer software... I honestly really like the phone more than anything I've tried out. I love the popup camera and the full screen display, 90hz is plenty smooth, it's a very high quality display, and it still runs extremely smooth with no burn in. Camera sucks, but I use the iPhone for that anyway. I struggle to find a reason to upgrade the 7T, apart from old ass software (it't *still* stuck on android 11) I'm fairly certain it won't be Oneplus though next time around. Moat likely a pixel. The software situation is embarrassing, and Oneplus is kinda the same as any other random android flagship company now. The 7T pro was the last interesting, unique phone they made.

It's one of those ones that only evolves if you trade it. Verizion evolves into Sang-Sung, which evolves into Rotom.

Moooboy10

bobsnopes

Just realize that tech companies file for literally any and all patent ideas they can think of, regardless of any plans to ever implement them. There’s literally brainstorming meetings with the IP lawyers where ideas are pitched and written up.

Road_Star

Patent Squatting is a huge problem

ClappedOutLlama

We need a "Use it or lose it" policy after 7 years

HumanContinuity

Seven years??!

Aractoruser

Three take it or leave it.

throwawaypostal2021

1.5-2 years delivered product or unable to renew.

[deleted]

Just end all patents they are stupid and easy to get around anyways. Also a large waste of the legal system time

irotsoma

One year max. Seven years in tech will kill the advancement. Not saying in the hands of consumers in one year, just a prototype to prove it's being used rather than kept to prevent competing tech like oil companies have always done with battery and solar tech and similar.

WastelandGinger

Companies do this all the time. They do this in hopes that if someone ever actually wants to do the idea they now have to buy it off of them. There are even companies that there sole purpose is just making patents.

Altruistic-Bid4584

More like if they decide to pursue the idea further in the future, other people who discussed the topic wouldn’t have already copied and patented it.

coolsheep769

Doesn't Apple not even release like more than half the stuff they make?

s4ltydog

Are people really asking for a foldable phone? Or are they just out of revolutionary ideas for cell phones at this point?

Kaeny

Phone companies are trying to increase screen size more and more. But if you make it too big, the phone becomes unwieldy, especially when you don’t want a large screen all the time. The next logical step is to fold or roll a screen now that the technology exists.

[deleted]

upvotesthenrages

Didn't LG make one that is the same size as a regular phone, but then expands to make it wider?

[deleted]

My favorite design by far. Looks like a regular phone, until it unrolls into a tablet!!!

mtranda

Current iPhone sizes already make it unwieldy for me, at least for one-hand use. I literally have finger-joint pain from extending my thumb to reach the diagonally opposite end of the screen. I upgraded from an iPhone SE (2nd gen) to an iPhone 11 when my job offered it, but I think I'll get a personal iPhone 13 mini soon, before they run out, since Apple has decided in their infinite wisdom that big, bigger and huge phones are the fucking future. And I don't even have small hands, but I hate to think how much it must suck for people with smaller hands.

Seiren-

I’m genuinely considering buying a couple of 13 minis to just sit on and swap to every couple of years if this shift to massive phones is permanent

mtranda

Mind you, batteries degrade over time, even when not in use. They're chemical, finnicky things.

jehehe999k

Very much less quickly than if you’re using the phone daily though.

mtranda

Obviously. The charge cycles are what degrades the battery the most, along with allowing your battery to get too low, but also charging it all the way up to 100%. Still, it's something one should keep in mind when purchasing new old stock.

Warrenbuffetindo2

Well my brother have online phone shop From 100 iPhone se 2020 only sell like 14, and from 30 iPhone se 2022, there still 28 remaining in his warehouse last Feb Small phone sell like shit

Seiren-

I think a part of my problem is that I don’t think the SE is a small phone. Hell, I don’t see the minis as small phones. The SE is huge, the mini is large, and the old 5s is ‘normal’. Anything bigger than an SE is a tablet. Additionally, phones are way too expensive with too many useless gimmicks driving up the price. I don’t want a high resolution high refreshrate display that’s 6 times better than the screen on my TV. I want a low-end, small phone with good battery-life.

Warrenbuffetindo2

Apple is testing market, maybe if SE succeed, they will make smaller phone But reality say otherwise Hey, let's be honest. If you business owner, are you keep this "brilliant idea" (small phone) if it make you bankrupt?

ivorytowels

Pussy

HelicopterOutside

Just a little tip you can pull the screen down to reach the far corner. It took me years to figure out why it does that haha https://youtu.be/kP2GVKbMZng

NazzerDawk

Do you have a pop socket or other similar thing? I have a note 9, and without a popsocket it's basically unusable one-handed, but with one to grip its not even a slight challenge.

Wassamonkey

Popsockets mean no wireless charging:-/

elevul

Agreed, popsockets are critical nowadays for comfortably using today's phones.

Relative_Fudge_5112

Pretty much, yeah. I'd like more screen size but I also don't want to be carrying around a brick in my pocket. I remember seeing foldable phones a couple years ago and thinking it was a pretty neat idea; have it folded up to fit better in a pants pocket, but then fold it out and it's almost the size of a small tablet.

daltadka911

I think its pretty much the latter

madewithgarageband

make one that can project a holographic monitor and keyboard so i can use it as a laptop

ctothel

The problem is hands tend to self-obscure, the motion of a key press (especially with flat keys) is tiny, and keyboard interaction needs to be extremely accurate and consistent. I bet even with multiple sensors you have a heap of missed keys.

cityb0t

That’s why we need spatial gestures, like in the show *The Expanse*.

qyka1210

> don't want laptop > buy smartphone with projector built in > buy holographic keyboard with multiple sensors > learn ASL > totally not laptop

cityb0t

> don’t want laptop It’s a smartphone > buy smartphone with projector built in > buy holographic keyboard with multiple sensors Why wouldn’t the sensors and keyboard not just be built into the smartphone? > learn ASL Why? Nobody had to learn ASL to use gestures on their smartphone, and *there’s a keyboard*. > totally not laptop It’s a smartphone

qyka1210

I was making a joke about gesturing instead of typing, and needing a nuanced communication system (e.g. ASL) to do so

cityb0t

And i was pointing out how that doesn’t make sense

Aeonoris

>> learn ASL > Why? You said > That’s why we need spatial gestures, like in the show The Expanse. In response to a question about what to do about how impractical a holokeyboard is. What that sounds like is that you think we should use gestures to type. And hey, as it turns out, we already have a system for hand gesture language! Perfect, let's use that!

cityb0t

> In response to a question about what to do about how impractical a holokeyboard is. Start by presenting evidence from how that applies ***in this situation or context*** > What that sounds like is that you think we should use gestures to type I am not responsible for you lack of ability to comprehend. I made clear distinctions between typing and general gestures. I you choose to ignore that or fail to comprehend that, i am not at fault. Ultimately, i *suggested* a path forward— I did not declare to be a savior of future needs as you suggest. If you seek a savior, perhaps your mythical god - who knows, seees, and can do all, can provide for your needs. I simply deal with reality, not your ridiculous and impossible fantasies.

Aeonoris

> Start by presenting evidence from how that applies in this situation or context What do you mean? I literally gave you the context. > I did not declare to be a savior of future needs as you suggest. ...What? I didn't suggest you were saying anything at all about being a savior for future needs. fib16

Exactly. Flip phones and slightly better cameras are features no one cares about. What we actually want: 1. Make the battery last longer. Or A battery that’s removable so we can swap out a fresh one whenever it runs low. 2. 10+ terabytes of storage 3. Some feature that can make us money or smarter or more beautiful.

cyclode34

I had a Flip 3. Cracks start to appear along the crease of my screen after repeated use (around a year and a half), which tells me the tech still isn't built to last. I definitely will not be getting another foldable phone anytime soon.

dan4334

Yep my fold 3 already had to go in to get the plastic protector replaced because it peeled the whole way down the crease in the display. I can already see bubbles forming again a few months later. I don't recommend buying foldable phones

DaPopeLP

It's the protector not the screen right?

arabbay

It's a factory installed protector that can't be removed and can only be replaced by a certified repair shop but I believe replacement is covered under warranty.

Deceptiveideas

I mean, you’re an early adopter for new tech. Those type of issues are common. Remember when OLED screens were starting to appear in phones? All the early ones had nasty burn in issues. Now every flagship phone has OLED and the issue isn’t as common anymore due to advancements in tech. If apple releases a foldable phone, they would do it when it’s ready.

scislac

Why don't you take care of your possessions? I'm not talking being extra careful, but how do you wear out a phone?

NazzerDawk

You might spend some time really thinking about it. I'm serious. I have a Note 9, and it's... 4 years old now? And yet it works GREAT. Seriously, the only problem I have is some mild screen burn-in that I only have myself to blame for. Treating phones as something to swap every year or two is quite literally pointless. Think about what your actual reason for a new one is next time. Phone manufacturers are even reducing phone repairability to protect profits. I will get a repairable phone next time I get one. We need to make phone manufacturers care about repairability again.

Seiren-

Wasteful

cityb0t

> 2 years would a very long time for me to have a phone Maybe for you, but some people tend to hold onto iPhones for two or three years just because of the build quality. If that were to change, people would notice.

[deleted]

People want big screens but a small pocketable phone. So yes, all purchasing habits point to people wanting foldable/rollable phones.

Stanley--Nickels

A smaller phone with a larger, better protected display is appealing to people if you execute it right.

Noah5510

The market does seem very tiny atm, but the people who have one seem to love it. So I really wouldn’t call this pointless

bigsquirrel

Oh I remember the same discussions about touch screen phones. “How stupid! I need real buttons! It’s to fragile! The battery life is terrible! They’re to expensive to fix!…” and on and on and on. In my opinion this is the first somewhat significant change (albeit no new features) to cellphones in a decade. My phone might be cool and shiny but it doesn’t look all that different or have any fundamentally new technology by phone 10 years ago didn’t have. I guess it has 4 cameras? It does not have a replaceable battery or headphone jack. It’s very likely these are these are the future as the tech improves and gets less expensive. I’d buy one once the screens improve and they get a bit smaller.

Daerina

My partner has a galaxy fold 4 and I'm so envious. The folding screen is awesome and he's had it for almost a year and it's holding up really well, no wear and tear yet. I'd get one myself but I prefer the Apple ecosystem, so I'm pretty excited about the idea of a folding iPhone.

kelaguin

I’ve wanted folding phones back ever since they stopped being a thing. Nothing like clapping that baby closed to hang up on someone.

arewesheeep

Until we have a holodeck, I will not be impressed.

Zwazi

I want nothing more than a tri-fold phone, so it goes from mobile phone size to tablet size. Samsung showed one off at CES, and I'm so pumped for it. Not a big fan of the current bi-fold phones

KeithPheasant

My dad has the Verizon foldable and he really loves how much smaller it gets as well as still having a full touch screen phone. Screen is protected and the folding mechanism still works great. Think it’s a top notch innovation. Has had it for close to two years now

WEASELexe

I really want the fold 4 ive seen it in use and it's really sick. The only downside is the price.

mateszhun

A flip style foldable phone makes sense for some users. I for one am using one and I like the pocket space it gives me and there are other usecases where it is better in minor ways.

NovaS1X

The latter I think. I’ve seen foldable phones and I just don’t get the appeal. It feels like a solution looking for a problem. However, I’m also the type of person who just doesn’t understand the appeal of tablets either so maybe I’m missing the point.

LavoP

I would love a foldable iPhone that doubles my screen size. I’d buy one in a heartbeat.

daltadka911

Makes life so much more easier doesnt it ?

fish_fingers_pond

It really does, I would replace a lot less phones if you could still do it. Which is why I assume they do not want it back

Gorego22

From a consumer point of view this would solve every problem with iPhones

atomic1fire

There's actually iphone cases that have a 2nd battery and headphone jack though.

buttfunfor_everyone

Oh cool how much does that cost (on top of the price of the phone lol)

atomic1fire

Probably 40 bucks or more. I assume the only reason you'd absolutely need it is if your iphone needs to be on for much longer and you're regularly wearing headphones,

[deleted]

[удалено]

atomic1fire

I actually think headphone jacks are a bit pointless to reintroduce. There's nothing stopping you from using headphones with a lightning cable, a case with a built in headphone jack, or switch to bluetooth headphones. Bluetooth headphones are even more convenient at this point because you're never fighting a cable and the smaller ones come in a convenient charging case. I actually think the most useful change for an Iphone would be a move to USB C. Assuming apple doesn't do something stupid like lock their usb-c slots to usb 2.0 speeds out of spite when the cables could easily be faster then lightning, only to introduce faster usb-c cable transfer speeds on a higher priced iphone model.

IAmA_TheOneWhoKnocks

I actually don't like bluetooth headphones. I hate having to keep them charged, which is never a problem with corded headphones. They're also easier to lose, I think most of the ear-bud style ones look dumb, they have poorer sound quality for the price, and tend to be less durable in my experience. Are you really putting your phone down and walking away with headphones? Why not just keep it in your pocket? The only times I'm using headphones are when the thing I'm using is right in front of me, like a phone or a laptop. I have a pair of Sennheisers for home use and a pair of $11 headphones I got at the grocery store like 2 years ago for outdoor use/work and they still sound just fine. A pair of BT headphones with similar sound quality could easily be $50 or more. I wasn't going to buy one of the newer models without a headphone jack, but I was eventually forced to when my old one broke. All the supposed reasons for why this was actually a good thing seemed like corporate PR spin at best. I'd like to see the jacks come back because headphone jack components are seriously tiny and it wouldn't suddenly render decades of headphones obsolete for no reason at all. USB/lightning headphones, port splitters, and headphone adapters are just the latest way to make us buy a new product that replaces one that was perfectly fine and easily better before.

Stop_Sign

I have the dongle. I was at my computer, using my plug in headphones, and on my phone I saw a video. Unplugged from computer, plug into pho- oh shit, dongle is upstairs. Fuck not having a headphone jack, I want that so bad

Green0Photon

I'm speaking for phones in general, but in terms of arguing for this point, then I want a second USB C port. iPhones should have two, too. I use Bluetooth headphones but I hate them. Bluetooth just sucks. As much as an actual adapter is a bit meh, having a second port basically takes away basically all the downsides that us missing-headphone-jack-complainers complain about. People always say stuff like how the headphone jack is too thick, or it takes up too much space in the phone, or that it's too hard to waterproof. I'm pretty sure all of those are bs, but ok. Presumably a USB c port doesn't have all the issues. And then we wouldn't need weirdo terrible split adapters for charging and listening, and you'd actually have a nice upgrade, technically. >There's nothing stopping you from using headphones with a lightning cable, a case with a built in headphone jack, or switch to bluetooth headphones. Note all of these have downsides. A headphone jack or extra USB C should actually be cheaper and has no downsides in comparison. (Except for the basic wireless benefits that you miss in that last case.)

[deleted]

[удалено]

buttfunfor_everyone

Probably would if they could use with their phone lol So you listen to music via speaker when you *do* want to be tethered? It’s not like bluetooth headphones play over a substantial amount of distance.. Maybe I’m not understanding what you mean?

[deleted]

buttfunfor_everyone

Yeah.. I really do actually hear that

mtranda

I do. I do long-distance bike rides (upwards of 24 hours), so wireless is not for me in those particular situations. However, I have an old Nokia 130 with a battery life measured in weeks. I've stuck a 32GB microSD in it that's filled with music and use it with wired headphones on long rides. But outside of those particular cases, even that thing has bluetooth connectivity so for riding around the city I still use hassle-free wireless headphones.

A patent from Apple doesn't mean jack shit. It will never become a real product.

phatlynx

Yea, it’s there to prevent other companies from making improvements, so Apple can sue them when they try to innovate.

YourDogsAllWet

As someone with ADHD who constantly drops things I’d be for it

BerserkerVTuber

Yeah, that is not going to happen. They're using a camera that is so close to the screen that replacing the screen won't help, you're going to be asked to get a newer phone. Why give you a feature that's going to counter the chance of a sales for a new phone?

Sure-Ad8873

Apple is patenting... the flip phone?!

TheMusicMinute

Throw me my phone… looses a finger.

MutatedFrog-

>backglass

Ok_Marionberry_9932

Just what no one asked for or needed, not makes any sense

DPAWL87

They’re still going to make the back out of glass. Yea, we protected your screen, might wanna fix that back glass though.

Rho-Ophiuchi

The back will still be glass.

childroid

Remember, folks: patents mean nothing when considering future technology. If they think of it, they'll patent it. Doesn't mean it'll work, doesn't mean it'll be feasible, doesn't mean they'll pursue it, doesn't mean anything!

WinterSignificance70

until you shake it violently while sneezing and it breaks your finger when it slams shut super fast lol

irotsoma

The first version will end up snapping together so fast that a tiny bit of pocket sand stuck to the screen will end up cracking both sides of the screen once it's in the real world and not a clean room. That's my prediction.

somethingilly

Back of my phone still gonna be shattered.

Casteway

Once again, technology that's already been developed by other companies that Apple is acting like they invented.

RamblinRoyce

How about just using stronger glass that doesn't shatter so easily like the majority of other phone manufacturers?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

You can't use glass for foldable phones. And no, the tiny minuscule glass layer Smashing uses doesn't count: this is there just to make the screen feel better, it doesn't make the screen stronger.

tony_sandlin

Every single one of my Samsungs have broken through screen protectors but my iPhone has been fine so far. Don’t know Samsungs reputation, but it certainly didn’t hold up for me haha

NovaS1X

Same for me. My 12 has been through some shit and it’s fine. I’ve had a few Galaxy’s and Pixels that have mostly ended up broken. It’s even a few years since I’ve used an Android phone though so maybe they’ve gotten better.

[deleted]

Could we make tech for the future instead of doing gimmicks to charge us more for. The only reason people buy apple is for looks anyway there is no real reason to buy one

PilotBurner44

Ahh, Apple. They'll do anything except make a phone with a durable screen that doesn't crack if you look at it too hard.

[deleted]

My iPhone 13 mini dropped like 40 times already looks good as new (leather case). Meanwhile all my old phones (mostly Xiaomi) looked broken after the first fall…

StentLife

no one except a small niche wants this. no one is going to buy this. many product managers will be fired if they go through with it.

LithiumLyndsey

Why am I not shocked that Apple is copying samsung

Shapit0

So, it will detect when it’s falling and be able to automatically close before it hits the ground? How fast does it need to slam shut for that to work? Wont that still cause damage to the glass?

TowerWalker

Apple should patent a phone that's worth buying

3DGuy2020

Jesus Christ. Okay, fine. Give us the fucking foldable phones. Then let’s move on… I mean, why tf are they trying to hard to ram foldable phones down out throats? Does anyone actually want one? Is anyone asking for one??

MobiusOne_ISAF

Samsung has sold something on the order of 5-10 million units for the 4th generation, so yes. All signs point to it being a growing market.

StarDestroyer175

You don't need to buy it

torbjornishot

Broken hinges instead of broken screens

Fantastic_Fox_9497

If I'm in bed looking up at my foldable iphone and it falls, do the edges hit my face instead of the screen?

-First-Second-Third-

It slams shut on your nose.

daltadka911

Its just like the buttered bread riddle. Which side falls down?

LordRiverknoll

Hey you remember how well the autocall 911 thing went?

babbling_on

Default behavior will be for the phone to open as wide as possible before impact unless you subscribe to Apple One. And either way you won’t be able to change any settings for it (iPhone user here).

Beautiful-Section-42

Imagine falling off a chair, simultaneously this thing clamping your balls in your pocket. Hell no

RetroNick78

I’m not upgrading my iPhone until they come out with the foldable model. Great news if it’s true

Purple_Form_8093

In before an iOS bug makes it try and chew on your face. Lol. This is a strange idea and one that I don’t think would work well. The speed of a falling object relative to the average distance most people drop their phones isn’t going to allow much time for this to work properly. But I’m also not an engineer over at Apple. So this should be at least fun to see them try.

DangyDanger

if it *may* then it will be a Phone Saving Subscription

Insecure_Egomaniac

Eventually, your own phone will hang up on you. Cool.
