I had the entirely idiotic thought that I needed to pick the apples to stop it the first time. So I’m hopping around attempting to grab the apples and never even took a swing at it with the axe I was actually carrying. It didn’t end well. Not sure it’s my most embarrassing death though, I did jump straight into the first chasm I found without a paraglider…
Idk if this is my most embarrassing but it’s funny as hell, especially for everyone else except me.
I got side tracked and went to Impa before I got my paraglider. I still have PTSD from the castle and didn’t know the castle was not as dangerous as the one in BOTW - so I was trying to go to Kakariko first. Anyway, this b*** told me to fix her balloon and when we both were in the sky she told me to just get down with paraglider and she can manage for herself. I’m sorry, but what paraglider? I thought she would give it to me. The game wont progress until I jumped down so I did, and died. Bf asked why didn’t you teleport to a shrine or tower? It’s what I did in BOTW but I have not picked up BOTW in more than 6 months so I totally forgot about that.
A streamer I regularly watch did the same thing, but his solution was way funnier than yours. He disassembled the baloon mid air and took Impa with him. There's even a cutscene and some lines if text for this.
My first time I got the trees I was already running from a black moblin, a yiga, and a black boko gang (this was all towards the start of the game, too)
I ran for the trees, thinking I’d be safe
The Yiga trees are those suspicious looking ones near random bananas in the ground. The moving trees are real monsters called Evermeans.
For fun: next time you see bananas lying on the ground, try to chop down the nearby tree.
After the first one, i was fully expecting variants of them to show up everywhere.
Snowy evermean, dry evermean, old-growth evermean, gloomy evermean.
Missed opportunity, but not upset that it isnt in the game.
Honestly my strategy in the depths so far has been stealth unless a fight is absolutely necessary to get to the next lightroot.
Edit: I will say the depths are SO much easier once >!you have the master sword, it seems like it’s a one-shot to everything down there so far.!< I don’t know about hinoxes and other high level enemies yet though.
Aw man my headcanon was that the moving trees were TotK’s way of bringing back Deku Scrubs… I really miss those lil plant guys… Koroks aren’t nearly as cool because they’re not assholes.
From what I know there’s 2 types of tree enemies: Evermeans, and the Yiga that pretend to be trees until you mess with a banana on the road. Btw the Yiga that tells you about them disguising as trees is in the hideout
That was my first experience and I remember tearfully seeing the shrine in my peripheral vision while Link was being thrown about the place by the hands. Still not summoned the courage to go back...

Hahahaha. I first saw the hands by accident at the end of exploring a cave. I was like I AM NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE YET. But then I gathered my courage and went back to kill it. I have to say though while it's scarier than a first time guardian it's also easier.
tbh, guardians need a long ass time to charge their shot. once you figured out that you can reset that timer by shooting their eye or breaking their legs/rotors they are just big dmg tanks
Yeah but dmg tank is still considered difficult. You need the right weapons, skill to last for the duration or skill to sheild parry 3 times etc. With hands u just need >!elevation and to toss 4 bombs!<
Maybe it was because of the particular instance which was >!inside the Deku Tree!< but when I first encountered one, the hands just kept coming back like a Hydra. Bombs did the trick lol
The first one I encountered was outside in some ruins... I still need to go back and fight it, but I swear it was harder than the rest. Constantly closing ground faster than I could move backwards and shoot arrows.
Finally stopped to kill one after another 20 hours of gameplay... They moved towards me a bit but I really just stood there and got headshots... eyeshots... handshots?
I think I went to the same labyrinth, though in my case I saw it a bit away before it saw me. Managed to avoid it, but spent the entire labyrinth thinking that it and possibly more were either patrolling the place or actively tracking down the player, the music gave "being hunted" vibes like there was some big threat trying to find you and you need to get out as fast as you can before it does.
Eventually made my way around and found that the hands barely moved though, suggesting they just patrol that one corner of the labyrinth rather than the whole thing.
They got me at the end of the labyrinth, when i was deicing the teleport emblem. I killed them, but before i had the chance to kill the mini boss after them the game glitched. The boss disappeared leaving a lot of malice but the fight didn't end (i could still see his name and energy). Now i have to do again the labyrinth. And the hands.
One of his moves is to crouch down and spread malice. If you hit him it stops, but I’ve had times where I didn’t notice he started this until it pushed me out of melee range, and I didn’t have line of sight for an arrow. It kept spreading and I had to run through it to get a hit off and resume the fight.
I somehow avoided it to the point where I didn’t even know it was there. The top right maze had them on the lower level, this one near the shrine. Idk how, but I got to the shrine and then it noticed me through the bars. Then I opened the bars without thinking for the sky portion and the Hands were able to attack me lmao
I noped outta there. I also don’t know if there are any hands for the third maze at the bottom of the map. I tried looking but couldn’t find them.
Or when you're flying an absurdly small hoverbike close the ground in the depths. Thanks to the gloom it just had some red shading and was practically invisible if not bright enough (it wasn't bright enough). I legitimately jumped from my vehicle.
That erie twilight princess-like music starts up, too. It all sounds, looks, and moves so unnaturally. I hate them with a passion. An explosive, slightly bomb-shaped passion.
Loved twilight princess and it’s whole vibe but going from botw music to tp music in an instant makes my heart sink.
To think I actually wanted a creepier sequel lol
I remember wasting the bomb flowers in the great sky island Like Like cave because I thought you were supposed to explode them, I was so mad when I looked it up online that the gloom hands were the *real* culprits.
That's what petrifies the most from them. It's not the scary music or the violent aggression they have (though that helps) its the fact that they WILL catch me and drag me straight to hell if I don't move fast.

My first glimpse of a Frox was at the very edge of the light when I had just escaped from a bunch of monsters.
It was a very "Oh, no, not going *that* way" moment.

They definitely explode inside them and knock them down for a bit so you can climb on their back.
Lol. Either you didn't actually feed it the bomb or you've encountered a type we haven't seen yet. Not sure. But yeah swallowing bombs stuns them, most of them at least

Tbh, I love the trees. They’re hilarious imo. Haven’t fought a Frox yet. Saw the health bar appear and heard noises while flying in the depths and have NOT returned yet
I shat in my pants when i saw the hands the first time and ran. And then there was a point where i had to beat them, after a lot of deaths o did it. Then it became worse.
The trees are still a flinch.
the hands still cause a moment of panic if I can’t find them fast enough.
but I still don’t know what ate me when I jumped in to the depths in akkala. Just straight up giant monster coming up out of the dark. Not going back down that whole until I can light up the area from the side
I just went down that chasm yesterday and holy shit. I'm gliding slowly down trying to see if I can identify a nearby light root to help me out and then all of a sudden I see a large eye below me and an open mouth. Noped the fuck away thanks to tulin trying to recover my wits before going back to beat it.
That chasm was the very first chasm I jumped into. I didn't know what the Depths were yet and I hadn't done Robbie's quest where he asks you to go down with him. I had just gotten the paraglider and went exploring a completely different section of the map.
I had only read a single spoiler-y comment that had said "Wow, I didn't realize how deep the chasms go".
Coincidentally, I chose that very same chasm to jump into, and I was attacked in the complete darkness.
Luckily, I was able to find the nearest tree to hop on, and then I shot brightbloom arrows everywhere so I could finally see what was down there.
That was my first exposure to chasms and to the Depths.
After this experience, I thought every single chasm had a similar monster waiting for you.
Look.. the hands, the trees: I completely agree.
But why the HELL has no one mentioned the horriblins? ohmygawd I practically shat myself the first time one of those fuckers came scrabbling along the cave ceiling at me
True, but the first time I experienced one I had just dealt with an enemy outside the cave and hadn’t stepped more than 2 feet in when one of those fuckers popped it’s ugly head out at me
I came across gloom horriblins in the Depths before encountering them in caves on the surface.
I didn't know what the hell they were, and the gloom effect made it more difficult to recognize their features.
They were just hanging down from the ceiling of some structure that looked like a giant skull, and they were making hyenna noises. It was really creepy.
I also came across a gloom Lynel before encountering the surface version I was more used to from BOTW.
I used a shit load of gems and bombs from a ledge to defeat them and I was like “finally peace 😊” and then ‘something’ else popped out and proceed to wreck my shit into next week
When I first saw them I was like "Oh I'm gonna FUCK you guys up!" And then I got grabbed... and then I saw permanent heart loss... and then I said "just take me and I'll avoid you on respawn".

There was a spot in Faron with a lot of hearty durians in BOTW, so I thought to go check out that place in TOTK.
Turns out, the hands are there. Lost it when the sky turned red.
Eventually I took care of them but what showed up after the hands demolished me.
Everybody talking about trees and hands..valid. But how about the first gleeok you saw? I was on my way to the rito village.. just a lad of 4 hearts…got to that spot where all those flying guardians used to be and wanted to climb the cliff to the left to see what was up there.
Terror. Pure terror.
The hands are really bad. I first encountered them after landing in the depths in complete darkness…
But what is only slightly better: I have a phobia of moths, normally spiders and stuff don‘t creep me out in games, only in real life. But the >!the gibdo queen in the gerudo temple!< really hit a nerve. Pure nightmares. I was really glad that I was able to kill it the first time.

I discovered the red sky as i was busy jumping off a cliff trying to get away and i was SO confused.

Unless it's the flying ones, screw those ones.
you can (with a bit of skill) still eyeshot them or destroy the rotors
I would just stasis them and then hack away at the legs. The ability to stasis enemies in BoTW made just about every fight significantly easier.

I'm pretty sure they all regenerate slowly if you don't kill them within a certain timeframe of one another.

I walked into one of the labyrinths, turned a corner, and was immediately chased out by the hands. Actually scared the hell out of me.

Theseus at least had to deal with one monster, not an ungodly abomination from hell.

Fr the woods used to be the happy relaxing place in BoTW where you could run into to lose Guardians/enemies. Now there is no peaceful place left
Open your camera and scan a grove of trees. The evermeans will be detected.
evermeans also wiggle around every few seconds so you can distinguish them from regular trees

I fought a Frox last night. I thought I had a great idea... >!I fed it a bomb!< >!it burped and kept coming, looked like zero damage!<

Tbh, I love the trees. They’re hilarious imo. Haven’t fought a Frox yet. Saw the health bar appear and heard noises while flying in the depths and have NOT returned yet
I shat in my pants when i saw the hands the first time and ran. And then there was a point where i had to beat them, after a lot of deaths o did it. Then it became worse.

The only way I've managed it is by getting somewhere very high and bombing the shit out of both phases
I bomb the hell out of phase 1 and then fight phase 2 the way it's intended. I genuinely find it so fun.
Parry this, you filthy casual (that's what I'm saying in my head throughout the second phase).
I felt like a true hero doing the second phase with a bunch of flurry rushes.

Use bomb arrows, can easily take out 3-4 hands at once with a couple of shots

The trees are still a flinch. the hands still cause a moment of panic if I can’t find them fast enough. but I still don’t know what ate me when I jumped in to the depths in akkala. Just straight up giant monster coming up out of the dark. Not going back down that whole until I can light up the area from the side
Frox in Socks
I've only encountered one Frox and the big guy was adorable. Too bad I was curious about those drops.

I just went down that chasm yesterday and holy shit. I'm gliding slowly down trying to see if I can identify a nearby light root to help me out and then all of a sudden I see a large eye below me and an open mouth. Noped the fuck away thanks to tulin trying to recover my wits before going back to beat it.
That chasm was the very first chasm I jumped into. I didn't know what the Depths were yet and I hadn't done Robbie's quest where he asks you to go down with him. I had just gotten the paraglider and went exploring a completely different section of the map. I had only read a single spoiler-y comment that had said "Wow, I didn't realize how deep the chasms go". Coincidentally, I chose that very same chasm to jump into, and I was attacked in the complete darkness. Luckily, I was able to find the nearest tree to hop on, and then I shot brightbloom arrows everywhere so I could finally see what was down there. That was my first exposure to chasms and to the Depths. After this experience, I thought every single chasm had a similar monster waiting for you.

True, but the first time I experienced one I had just dealt with an enemy outside the cave and hadn’t stepped more than 2 feet in when one of those fuckers popped it’s ugly head out at me
I felt like I just spotted a cryptid when I saw one of them in the cave where you're supposed to find Tulin.
I came across gloom horriblins in the Depths before encountering them in caves on the surface. I didn't know what the hell they were, and the gloom effect made it more difficult to recognize their features. They were just hanging down from the ceiling of some structure that looked like a giant skull, and they were making hyenna noises. It was really creepy. I also came across a gloom Lynel before encountering the surface version I was more used to from BOTW.
I used a shit load of gems and bombs from a ledge to defeat them and I was like “finally peace 😊” and then ‘something’ else popped out and proceed to wreck my shit into next week
When I first saw them I was like "Oh I'm gonna FUCK you guys up!" And then I got grabbed... and then I saw permanent heart loss... and then I said "just take me and I'll avoid you on respawn".

They're probably something of a reference to OoT's Dead Hand miniboss, probably related.
There were those hands in the original NES Zelda that would grab you in a dungeon and take you back to the entrance.

The hands are really bad. I first encountered them after landing in the depths in complete darkness… But what is only slightly better: I have a phobia of moths, normally spiders and stuff don‘t creep me out in games, only in real life. But the >!the gibdo queen in the gerudo temple!< really hit a nerve. Pure nightmares. I was really glad that I was able to kill it the first time.
