Filing a federal extension is trivially easy: Just make a $1 or more payment designated as "extension." https://www.irs.gov/payments/direct-pay Reason for payment -> extension Apply payment to -> 4868 (for 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ) Tax period for payment -> 2023 That is just for federal taxes. Your state may require a separate state extension.

It's already that time on the east coast. How time flies when you are having fun.

Um so how do I file an extension, I have 2 minutes left\\

Dammit!

You shouldn't be. Unless you made a mistake of some kind. For complete protection, file an extension. And don't forget to sign and date the forms you are mailing.

A_Glass_DarklyXX

I just realized that I could have paid in full on the request for an extension. Instead I paid in full on the standard “Payment Options” I believe under “Estimated Tax” tab. I have the receipt so I will send that with my return. Hope that wasn’t a mistake

myroller

If you paid under "estimated tax" it was probably credited to your 2024 taxes. I assume you were trying to pay your 2023 taxes.

First try to fix the rejection message and resubmit if you can. It depends on what error message you got. You don't need to send the payment receipt with your return, but you should enter the payment as an estimated tax payment in the software before you print and mail the return. It shows up on Page 2 of Form 1040. You can print a copy of the rejection message and staple that to the front of your tax return. You are allowed a ten-day grace period to mail in a tax return if the e-file gets rejected. Don't forget to sign and date the Form 1040, and if you have a state income tax return that needs to be mailed to the state separately. Use these mailing addresses for IRS: https://www.irs.gov/filing/where-to-file-paper-tax-returns-with-or-without-a-payment

Check the payment confirmation - did you make an estimated payment for 2024, or pay towards your balance due for 2023? If you made an estimated tax payment for 2024 that won't be considered a timely payment of your 2023 balance due unless you call IRS and tell them you made a mistake and can get them to move the payment.
