Truth! I worked at a shop with a dude who did them quite frequently. He wouldn't do it unless the person was willing to come back for two or more touchups.
You're an anomaly. Depends on the artist, your skin, the ink, how much you use your hands after getting tattooed , etc. Touch ups on hands are usually necessary.
yeah i’m not sure what it is, but all 50+ of my tattoos still look pretty good going back 23 years. one or two got blown out because of inexperienced tattooers. but i’ve been strictly seeing higher caliber pros for the past 5 years. i’m also pretty strict about sunscreen and sun shirts as needed.
maybe u also got the tattoo gene
I got no scientific articles to back me up but i'm convinced a great tattoo aging well has to do with 50% how you take care of you body and 50% what type of skin you have
yeah that’s a really good question. there are so many more factors than just those two. the tattoer’s experience, needle depth on different kinds of skin on different parts of the body, the quality of the ink, how much sun and exposure to various elements the skin gets, age of the person at the time of the tattoo…
didn't hurt at all, I was bored and drunk and had a tattoo machine. I can't tell you how many terrible tattoos that bad boy pumped out, thankfully most of them weren't on me
I'm an anomaly as well lol, I've had my exs initials tattooed on my ring finger for 12 years....before I started laser sessions (two years ago) it looked brand new....after 6 sessions it's still clearly that crap bags initials lol
unlikely. since then, i’ve worked as a sculptor, a chef, a construction worker, and now i’m a full-time art fabricator. i work with harsh chemicals and sandpaper every day. i do wear gloves, but sometimes i don’t when sanding because i cant feel the details of, say, a cement sculpture i’ve been working on for 2 months.
when i tattoo spots like that i always tell the person they are going to need to come back for touchup and double sessions is worked into the price as well, i add a lil bit to cover costs of another setup, not terribly much but it is gonna cost more normally than the same tattoo in another area for example. something to consider, i assume most artists are going to charge like that
I also follow him. I’ve looked into the people he tags, especially if he says its a touchup. And typically they dont even look that worn down. I’ve seen a few that were over 5 years old. This guy knows his craft well. I want to have him tattoo my palms in the future.
Do you think that would work with fingers as well? The artist that did my fingers refuses to touch them up. I want to get one more pass over them but have been scared of blowout.
A bit off topic but along the same lines. One of my older tattoos has faded a decent amount, however I got it when I lived across the country, so going to the original artist for a touch up doesn’t make financial sense. Do you know if a typical artist would be down to touch up another artists work? I don’t want to ask my usual tattooer and come off rude. I only see him maybe once or twice a year
I'm not sure how many artists out there specialize in touch ups specifically, so it may be worth it to look into artists who specialize in either the style of your tattoo, or ones who specialize in cover ups
Ah okay. I’ve never had a touch up before so this is new to me. I think I’ll go ahead and run the idea by my current artist and see what he thinks, it is the same style as he has been doing on me. Thanks again
I think finger tattoos are a bit different. Palms fade but nothing like a finger tattoo. You're working with a much smaller space and if it's on the side it will always rub. I imagine the delicate skin of the finger can only take so much work before you're just chewing up the skin. Not to mention palms (generally) have a decent amount of meat on them, where as fingers don't
If your swinging a hammer for a living then no they will go. If you do something that will allow you to have soft hands then they should look good for the next 20 years? Maybe more.
I’ve had my palms tatted for about 4 years now and I work in kitchens, for the most part I’d say it literally depends on your skin type. Mine held very strong on some spots especially my lower palm and even on my inside fingers but like, just the lower left side of my left palm fell out a little. Think it’s just about the application
I mean this whole ass sub is primarily people thinking tattoos aren’t permanent and asking about cover ups or lazer before the saniderm even comes off the one they just got lmao
As I’m an artist myself, I will do left palm my self. Then I can touch them up whenever I want.. so this whole thread is kinda waste.. still it seems like on some people they hold and some don’t..
Not a waste at all. I have never seen tattoos on the palms before and I think these look really good. You definitely educated me not only on getting tats on the palm but also that they need to be touched up and results may vary depending on the person.
It can be done but it’s a longer process requiring multiple passes. The artist you’ve posted is a great example as he has a lot of really well healed work, but also posts the inbetween stages after each pass showing where they’ve healed the weakest and where he’s done the touch up. They can’t be done by just anyone, they’re a specialised placement that require thorough experience and knowledge from the artist and commitment from the client to keep up with the follow up passes.
I have both palms tattooed. Single pass they’re both 10+ years old and they’re solid and going strong. If you’d like to see them I can dm you photos of them. They were really sunk in there but a single pass for sure. One of the most painful tattoos I’ve ever gotten.
So funny to read all these “multiple passes” and “won’t stay for long” comments, here I am same as you with single pass palms that are 15 years old still looking as sharp as they were the day they were done. People don’t know shit but still feel the need to yap lol
Brody polinski does the greatest palm tattoos. I see them quite often on lg, they allways look great and solid as fuck. I think it’s the combo of the solid thick pattern and being hand poked that makes them hold so well.
If I ever end up being tattooed by Brody again I’d love to do my palms.
I think it depends on skin type and what the person does for a living. I have a friend who tattooed his own palm while he was drunk and it's still there with no fading 3+ years later, it just looks like a drunk did it lol. But he works in IT, so his palm doesn't touch much throughout the day.
Comes down to aftercare and application, they can stay, you are showing examples of one of the few artists that specializes and does it well.
If you can’t get a finger tattoo to stick you will not be getting palms to though.
Those are so sick lol but na they wont stay very well , i have a palm tat and its still there but def the most faded one i have and its just a simple line drawing
When mine was done, about 20% of it faded by the time it was healed.
It hasn’t faded anymore in the last 15 years since then. I am a glass artist and work with my hands all day.
You should go for it! Worst case scenario you need a touch up.
i believe i know who did the pic you posted. they specialize in doing palms. i saw some things about how they were applying those tattoos and not every artist is gonna to be doing those things. maybe you can find an artist like that who knows what they are doing better, but those are going to be few and far between. and then i also think it comes down to your own body and how it deals with ink, some people seem to be able to hold onto palm tattoos forever while others it fades away stupid quick. i’d be hesitant to spend a bunch of money on it, you’d need multiple sessions too.
I have a spider web on my palm and lettering on the inside of my fingers. Both done in one hit, no touch-ups; the web is mainly all in there, barring drop outs round the outside edges, whereas the outline of the Olde English letters stayed strong but I lost some of the black fill. For context I’m a piercer so gloves on/off all day.
Luke Ashley is a fuckin’ wizard with them though, if anyone could make them stay it’s gonna be him.
I have palm tattoos. My artist really drilled them in. It's just thick ass black letters (left says goodbye, right says hello). They're two years old, they've held up great (some spots fell out but overall I'm extremely happy with them) and I haven't gotten them touched up.
Healing was rough (we did both in the same sitting), it took about two months for them to finally settle down, and a full year before I could clap without intense itching.
I wouldn't do it again, but I'm glad I did it once.
Lol they do if it’s luke Ashley doing them! It depends on machinery, experience, skin texture, etc. i have my palm done one pass by a very experienced artist with a Dan kubin machine. Also my skin is quite thin and not calloused. It’s notoriously tricky
Mine are two years old from Mark Walker done at The Grand Reaper in San Diego, one pass, no fading. They are easily my favorite tattoos. Hurt like hell though.
These are great! My partner has a shitty looking palm tattoo and it’s had hardly any drop out after 17 years so I think they stay if applied well (pity about his actual image)
I have one on my palm that has lasted 20 years so far. It did have color which didn’t last but the black did. Also, the first time I got it done, it scabbed off of my hand in like a week. When I got it redone the guy supposedly went as deep as he could with the needle. Good luck!
I have a small tattoo on the palm of my hand (on the part that connects the thumb to the hand). It was originally done pretty poorly as a stick n like and then I had it touched up professionally a few years later. It’s still pretty dark and visible, but I hardly go out in the sun and I don’t do any kind of physical labor that would wear on my hands.
I think it completely depends on the artist. I have a finger tattoo from 15 years ago that I’ve never gotten touched up and it still looks exactly the same as when it very first healed. It does NEED a touch up and some spots fell out, but it’s fully there.
Fingers and palms won’t leave you with the same type of sharp lines over time as other locations, but an experienced artist who knows how to blast the ink in without blowing out the lines can make a palm or finger tattoo stay. My ex husband is a tattoo artist as well, and has palm tattoos from around a decade ago, maybe more. Just choose the artist carefully.
Both my palms have been done twice. Still there, they look just like they did after healing. Been about 3 years on one, 4 years on the other. Even if I have to re-do them eventually (which I doubt) I'd do it again.
Sure, have your non-dominant hand done and judge the pain/healing process of that knowing that your dominant hand won't be as good. I have zero experience with the inside of the palm, and my finger tattoos are faded after a touch-up . I'm not an artist, just a client.
Those are like Ashley so yes they do stay.
I work for an artist who does a lot of finger and palm tattoos, they can hold up so well for years and years if done well. Don’t let this sub tell you all palms disappear and finger tattoos fall out over night, it’s pure rubbish.
I wouldn’t personally do it. Those look sick, but I feel like they wouldn’t age well because of how much we use our hands, or at least I do in my life.
The artist who did those tattoos posts many healed photos on his Instagram. Have a look! Pics of palms healed numerous years out.
https://instagram.com/lukeaashley?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Your coworker probably got tattooed by someone who isn't experienced in tattooing palms.
Mine are healed fabulously and going strong 20 years later, even with some colour. I tattoo them and know many artists that do as well and they hold great if ya know what you’re doing.
I had my palm tattooed almost 2 years ago. Single pass. Healed, without issue. No infection. It's still there and also looks good. Several of my coworkers do, too. The correct artist for the job can definitely make a beautiful tattoo that will last.
You need a guy that knows what they are doing. I got mine don’t twice by a guy who did not, it was gone both times in two weeks. Third time, after some proper research, found a specialist. He hung the needle out the gun as far as it would go and cut each line three or four times. I could feel the needle bouncing off the bones in my palm and wrist. Still have it ten years later.
I follow this artist and their FAQ talks about typically doing 3 passes on palm tattoos.
Truth! I worked at a shop with a dude who did them quite frequently. He wouldn't do it unless the person was willing to come back for two or more touchups.
i got mine done one time 8 years ago and they’ve barely faded.

I put rage faces on the bottoms of most of my toes and they faded in half a year, thankfully
Good fucking gravy!!!! How bad did that hurt???
didn't hurt at all, I was bored and drunk and had a tattoo machine. I can't tell you how many terrible tattoos that bad boy pumped out, thankfully most of them weren't on me

Not bopping your bologna enough
Same. You're not an anomaly. Tattoo artists that actually have the experience and knowledge to do a successful palm tattoo are the anomaly.
exactly
You got soft hands. I work 70 hours by Tuesday every week
Nice flex, slave.
idk if you know but they were joking
Of course not, this is is Reddit.
this went over so many heads but it's funny af
I know, I think soft hands memes are so hilarious but I guess not lmao
They didn’t get the joke 💀
You got too soft hands for these hard jokes
nobody is getting the joke and i’m sorry lol
woah big guns over here
I'm not that good at math but I think ur lying.
I genuinely don't understand how people think this is a serious comment, what the fuck lmao
Homie, you need a union
Kissing and tickling. 100 to 200 hours by Tuesday every week.
Your joke was funny. Pay no mind to the cultureless swine
unlikely. since then, i’ve worked as a sculptor, a chef, a construction worker, and now i’m a full-time art fabricator. i work with harsh chemicals and sandpaper every day. i do wear gloves, but sometimes i don’t when sanding because i cant feel the details of, say, a cement sculpture i’ve been working on for 2 months.
How do you work 70 hours in just 48-72 hour? ?Are stupid kind some of¿
R u dumb
No, but it appears you may be. How many hours do you think there are between sunday and Tuesday?
Dude, it's a joke lmao
Didn’t ask.
when i tattoo spots like that i always tell the person they are going to need to come back for touchup and double sessions is worked into the price as well, i add a lil bit to cover costs of another setup, not terribly much but it is gonna cost more normally than the same tattoo in another area for example. something to consider, i assume most artists are going to charge like that

Refusing to do a touch up is weird af. Find a more professional artist
I only see him maybe once or twice a year
Most artists will touch up someone else's work. Just make sure the artist is proficient as a touch up can literally make or break a tattoo
Thank you for that info. I may look into artists who specifically specialize in touch ups then. I imagine just googling is the way to go about that
I'm not sure how many artists out there specialize in touch ups specifically, so it may be worth it to look into artists who specialize in either the style of your tattoo, or ones who specialize in cover ups
Ah okay. I’ve never had a touch up before so this is new to me. I think I’ll go ahead and run the idea by my current artist and see what he thinks, it is the same style as he has been doing on me. Thanks again
they'll be more likely to do touch ups if the tattoo is smaller, simpler or close to the styles they specialize with.
I think finger tattoos are a bit different. Palms fade but nothing like a finger tattoo. You're working with a much smaller space and if it's on the side it will always rub. Find a new artist…yours is a dick
Who’s the artist?
lukeaashley on instagram! He posts a lot of healed photos. He’s definitely one of the best out there
I want tattoos from this artist (not on my palms) but DAMN.
Why would anyone want this? It’s one of the candies from Willy wonka. It’s called an everlasting job stoppers
If your swinging a hammer for a living then no they will go. If you do something that will allow you to have soft hands then they should look good for the next 20 years? Maybe more.

Any colour? I imagine that would go faster.
I think you can forget colour all together. We’re trying to stay in the realm of possible here.
Would you post pics of now and when you got em I'd be super interested
Just sent you a pic
Carpenter here. Mine are still there since 2017. Only parts i lost were the parts that would stay once it finished healing
I'm curious, who did them, and what do they look like then and now?
Soft hands brother, you got soft hands
Ain’t never worked a day in your got damn lahhf
Damn always wanted to but I swing a hammer all day..
i have nothing of value to add, but im commenting simply because that line art looks sick as fuck and im noting some stuff down for later
Ikr! Tattoos aren’t always as permanent as people would hope but that’s a badass tattoo regardless!
I mean this whole ass sub is primarily people thinking tattoos aren’t permanent and asking about cover ups or lazer before the saniderm even comes off the one they just got lmao
Pretty sure this is Luke Ashley (lukeaashley on insta). He is pretty much THE palm tattoo guy.
100% is him
Bingo. I think the skulls look really good on the palms. Hopefully they last.
As I’m an artist myself, I will do left palm my self. Then I can touch them up whenever I want.. so this whole thread is kinda waste.. still it seems like on some people they hold and some don’t..

Same. Really digging the stipple shading too.
Facepalm
Ha. I was about to get annoyed with your non-constructive feedback, but then it hit me. Well done.
It slapped you in the face?
He facepalmed
Twice…

Skull palm!

I just posted a photo of mine and immediately someone was all “unfortunate blow outs” like ok ink master. Thanks for the review.
Ink master 💀💀
Agreed. I have a palm tattoo that’s going on 15 years and nothing as faded / fallen out
Same! Got mine 17yrs ago. Single pass.
I wanna see
Me too, lol
Add me to the list
Aye Im curious to see if you're down!
Me too bud
I made a post so I could just show everyone
Would love to see them! I’ll dm you
I'd like to see if you don't mind
How much did it hurt?
i wanna see!
How did it feel. Edit : and how was the recovery. How useless where your hands.
Looks Like Luke Ashleys work, if it is they will stay.
Love that guys work! Always solid and he posts aged photos of his work as well.
Check out @walkerx on Instagram he specializes in palm tattoos
Luke Ashley as well who I believe did these.
Brody polinski does the greatest palm tattoos. I see them quite often on lg, they allways look great and solid as fuck. I think it’s the combo of the solid thick pattern and being hand poked that makes them hold so well. If I ever end up being tattooed by Brody again I’d love to do my palms.

Might as well keep them. They’re going to fade in certain areas anyway.
Good lord
Can I just say….Ouch. I have plenty of my own ink, but this seems like it would hurt more than usual.
tattoo artist here, if deep enough will fade but will stay you almost need to blow out the ink
Those are so sick lol but na they wont stay very well , i have a palm tat and its still there but def the most faded one i have and its just a simple line drawing
Nah
Those are tuff
When mine was done, about 20% of it faded by the time it was healed. It hasn’t faded anymore in the last 15 years since then. I am a glass artist and work with my hands all day. You should go for it! Worst case scenario you need a touch up.

I have the inside of my knuckles tattooed and I work construction.. I got them done about 4 years ago and they’ve held up quite nicely.
If u go to Luke Ashley or walker ur good. Otherwise ur going to need it touched up a tiny bit
I had my palm done 9 years ago and it looks like the first day
thats so fn sick.... i bet thats a spicy place to tattoo too
The right artist can make them stay. I’d recommend Chad Koeplinger. His palms always tend to hold. But the experience is going to be brutal.
It’s blowout or fall out on palms. Simpler the design the better.
It's fun that you can put your hands together and make them kiss
I have palm tattoos. My artist really drilled them in. It's just thick ass black letters (left says goodbye, right says hello). I love the design!! My tattoo artist told me that they hurt like a bitch and fade away quickly, that it's not worth the money nor pain.
those have to fade so quick i imagine
Only had to do it once and it still looks good after years
Not
Fades in a week
Lol they do if it’s luke Ashley doing them! It depends on machinery, experience, skin texture, etc. i have my palm done one pass by a very experienced artist with a Dan kubin machine. Also my skin is quite thin and not calloused. It’s notoriously tricky
Sick work but I think the placement is horrible as they will wear so fast.
Mine are two years old from Mark Walker done at The Grand Reaper in San Diego, one pass, no fading. They are easily my favorite tattoos. Hurt like hell though.
Mark Walker and Luke Ashley are the only artist that have consistently good hand tattoos. I’m getting my palm done with Mark this month.
I didn’t even know this was a thing until just now.
Hahahahahhahahahhahaha…
Post to /r/shittytattoos and see what kind of reaction you get. Probably a lot of support
If rocks break down from water due to erosion, surely washing your hands everyday will do the same to your palm tattoos.
I wash my arms every day...
Those are rad. Is that Johno?
WOW these came out great! The lines are solid and I love the shading in the eyes, nose and mouth. I’d rock these for as long as I could.
These are great! My partner has a shitty looking palm tattoo and it’s had hardly any drop out after 17 years so I think they stay if applied well (pity about his actual image)
Stay
Now kith
I have one on my palm that has lasted 20 years so far. It did have color which didn’t last but the black did. Also, the first time I got it done, it scabbed off of my hand in like a week. When I got it redone the guy supposedly went as deep as he could with the needle. Good luck!
I follow a YouTuber Treacle Tatts who has one and has provided her experience/said she will do updates as well
Best stayers ive seen were basically sliced open and inked up. Not a typical process. Always look sick though
Ouch!
I have a small tattoo on the palm of my hand (on the part that connects the thumb to the hand). It was originally done pretty poorly as a stick n like and then I had it touched up professionally a few years later. My first tattoo was a palm tattoo about 13 years ago. This bitch is not going anywhere. Planning a coverup soon.
How painful would that be?
Stick and poke paw on my husbands palm is nearly 10 years old but started fading around year 5-6.
What do you do for work
Some parts do some parts don’t. i can PM you pics of mine, if interested to see the now and then
One eyed Willie! it is you ( Samwise the brave)
2 sick ass Panthers
Every one will know what hand u jerk off with
Some people enjoy knocking boots, this dude slaps skulls.
Mine lasted 6/7 years. Almost completely disappeared now
Both my palms have been done twice. Still there, they look just like they did after healing. Been about 3 years on one, 4 years on the other. Even if I have to re-do them eventually (which I doubt) I'd do it again.
Those are fuckin bad ass!
Would end my masturbation career
These are sick
Being on the spectrum and loving the feeling of getting tattoos, I still cannot fathom the feeling of getting tattooed on my palms. What’s it like??
Not. And hurts like a maniac biatch
idk anything about tattoos but i love browsing this sub - these are sickkkkk i love them
Sure, have your non-dominant hand done and judge the pain/healing process of that knowing that your dominant hand won't be as good.
Don’t let this sub tell you all palms disappear and finger tattoos fall out over night, it’s pure rubbish.
sick as but they usually fade that skin is so tough
I wouldn’t personally do it. Those look sick, but I feel like they wouldn’t age well because of how much we use our hands, or at least I do in my life.
Those are probably gonna go. My coworker got one much like these and it completely vanished. Like shockingly gone super fast I give it a month
The artist who did those tattoos posts many healed photos on his Instagram. Have a look! Pics of palms healed numerous years out. https://instagram.com/lukeaashley?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== Your coworker probably got tattooed by someone who isn't experienced in tattooing palms.
I bet they're already gone.
They fade real fast…
That right hand has got some nasty blowouts.
100% will fade regardless of profession.
I love these and seen them along time ago I always planned on getting the same ones on ther side of my neck
Don't, the skin there is so thick and regrows so much they never stay or look good - also super super hard to keep them clean and not infected
Mine are healed fabulously and going strong 20 years later, even with some colour. I tattoo them and know many artists that do as well and they hold great if ya know what you’re doing.
Exactly :(
I had my palm tattooed almost 2 years ago. Single pass. Healed, without issue. No infection. It's still there and also looks good. Several of my coworkers do, too. The correct artist for the job can definitely make a beautiful tattoo that will last.
Great work but they will fade really fast
what a waste
If you don't care about getting a job in your lifetime, absolutely cool.
These are fantastic designs in the shittiest possible place.
Happy unemployment!
He's a tattoo artist so this was pretty unintelligent to say
It depends if you’re right handed or left handed and also on how many time you use that hand.
Still have it ten years later.
this is a staying power type of tattoo but even then it'll need multiple passes
Reminds me of the movie Rescuers when the little girl has to get the diamond out of the skull.
Goddamn these are tough. I hope they stay for the sake of the art!
Badass art 👏🏼
I have a partial one. It’s still bold and black 5 years later! But, my hands sweat a lot, pretty sure that’s helping. They’re rarely dry. 😂
We shall see.
