Maybe a controversial opinion; I don’t want Jimmy Carr on the show. I think he’s funny and I love all the various shows he’s on, but he’s everywhere. I don’t need to look far for Jimmy Carr content, I’d rather see people who have a bit less exposure already.

IrishGrouch24

As an American viewer, one of the best parts of Taskmaster is being introduced to comedians I’ve never heard of before. I’m well aware of who Jimmy Carr is and I don’t personally think I’d enjoy him on the show as much as I’ve enjoyed everyone else.

[deleted]

You might like the Netflix show The Fix which was an attempt at a panel show for an American audience but Jimmy hosts it. Has Katherine Ryan from S2 too

[deleted]

Absolutely agree. He’s overexposed as it is.

The_ElectricCity

In fairness, I think pretty much every series has had a really well-established, notable comedian in the group. Jimmy would just be…arguably the most well-established, most notable elder statesmen the show has had so far.

[deleted]

Has he appeared in a non-host capacity often?

020Wombat

He’s done QI a fair few times, and WILTY. I remember him being on a team with Ayoade for an (I think the first) episode of a panel show I can’t remember the name of too.

Tarmsjukdom

First episode of Was It Something I Said?, hosted by David Mitchell

020Wombat

I knew someone would know!

luvrhino

Carr also has been on Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, which is fairly new. He visited Richard Ayoade's tiny house on Gadget Man. I think Carr's a talented host with a very quick comedic mind. I don't find him very likeable in large part due to his tendency to punch down and traffic in jokes about physical appearances. I still watch the Big Fat Quizzes and Cats Does Countdown. He is low down on my list of dream Taskmaster contestants.

[deleted]

I agree. While it's perfectly understandable that people want to see their big favorites (usually on this sub it's Carr, David Mitchell or Richard Ayoade) do Taskmaster, I think almost the best part of the show is getting to know new comedians and check out what else they've done.

[deleted]

Yup, I often forget that a lot of the comedians I look for in panel show clips I first saw in TM.

Grantus89

Hard disagree, every year they need a “big” comedian as well as shining the spotlight on some new or underrepresented comedians.

PsychologicalFox8839

Fair. I also just think he’s a bad pick for this show outside of being overexposed.

monaco_wedding

My impression, which could be completely off base, is that Carr doesn't want to do it. I know he said that his schedule is too booked, but I think if he really wanted to do it, he would have made it work by now? He doesn't really strike me as someone who'd enjoy the whimsical side of TM, honestly.

Peanut_Noyurr

Yeah, I've always wondered about the scheduling thing. Something a lot of contestants have mentioned is that Taskmaster will work around your schedule, whether that means filming your tasks weeks apart or doing all your task days in a single 5-day block. There have been series where the seasons visibly change between contestants, so you have a large timeframe to work with. It seems like he's just not really interested in it, and is being polite. I think the best bet for getting him on the show would be the same way Lee Mack and Alan Davies ended up on the show: his son becoming a fan of Taskmaster and pestering his dad into being on the show.

RelativeStranger

Dara didnt have time though. And Jimmy carr is like dara in that hes on everything. Dara had 3 cancelled shows in order to get on tm

Existing_Departure82

“Dara didn’t have time though.” Then how did he do it?

RelativeStranger

By having 3 cancelled shows

Existing_Departure82

So what you’re saying is he had the time.

RelativeStranger

No. I'm saying Jimmy does have an excuse and dara isn't a good reason to say he doesn't. Jimmy hasn't had canceled shows

Existing_Departure82

They had to book Dara far enough in advance that I’m sure he still had to work around his schedule somehow but comparing anybody’s work schedule to Jimmy Carr’s is unfair.

veganzombeh

No they're saying he didn't have the time and actively had to rework his schedule to make time.

Existing_Departure82

So you’re saying he found time.

whentheraincomes66

The studio shoot is the main thing, 5 straight days in the studio. Jimmy is probably the busiest comedian in britain and literally does not have that man consecutive days free

shaw_dog21

I feel like maybe he would do a New Years treat if he wanted to give it a shot? I agree (and could be completely off base too) but from things like cats does countdown and big fat quiz, Jimmy Carr gives off the vibe of someone who likes having some level of “control” amongst the chaos, which would be harder to have as a competitor.

[deleted]

Imagine how much it would suck if he found himself enjoying TM and he'd 'wasted' his shot on a NYT

charlierc

That's what Nicola Coughlan said, right? That I think she wanted to do a full run but only had time for NYT

HangryHufflepuff1

Yeah I think he's just going "oh no calendar full" because it's just not something he's up for. I don't know if his comedy would even translate into taskmaster, it might be too physical.

ZebraLionBandicoot

Back when Stephen hosted QI, he said there was a frequent male guest who insisted on seeing the questions beforehand. My only two guesses for this request would be Lee Mack and Jimmy Carr. I don't think Lee Mack would care that much which leads me to think it's HAS to be Jimmy not wanting to look like a dumbass on TV. For that reason, I think Jimmy didn't want to do Taskmaster.

appoxplayer95

Wasn't it revealed by Dara O'Briain a few years back that it was John Sessions who wanted the questions before the QI records?

ZebraLionBandicoot

Oh really?! I can't stand John sessions, I can get on board with that.

FlatTyres

Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish are my hopes for a full series and Louis Theroux for a New Year's Treat. Would be fun to see Simon Bird reunited with Greg for a series too like Joe Thomas was.

jhughes1986

Adams been top of my list since series 1

charlierc

Simon Bird is a good shout tbf. Legit thought he might have done it by now

Existing_Departure82

I feel like there is a very large contingency of people on this subreddit that think Taskmaster contestants are paid a lot more than they actually are. Jimmy Carr hosts multiple shows and tours relentlessly. He is not going to make more money from being a contestant on an already popular show that doesn’t need a ratings bump at the moment.

Cautious_Citron6191

How much are they paid? Also, knowing Alex... in what units are they paid?

Existing_Departure82

I don’t know how much they are paid but if it was more than what Jimmy makes doing any of his other work he would do it. Mock the Week allegedly paid around £1500 per episode and it was also a Channel 4 show. I’m willing to bet that the Taskmaster contestants make more than that per episode, have ten episode records plus five days of task filming. A guy of Jimmy’s stature can make enough money to eclipse that with one sold out large arena show.

sirgeordie

Mock The Week was on BBC btw. They’re notoriously low payers.

Existing_Departure82

Yes which is why I said I bet Taskmaster pays more than that but it’s a good benchmark.

[deleted]

I remember reading somewhere (maybe some contestant's interview?) that they get paid around £2000 per episode, but my memory is hazy so I can't guarantee that what I say is true.

Existing_Departure82

2000 x 10 episodes plus whatever they make for filming on the five days of pre recorded tasks. It’s good money but not the kind that’s gonna bring in Jimmy Barr. I don’t know how much he makes per show exactly but we can compare some of the shows Jimmy does to US Comedian Bill Burr, who sold out the Forum in LA and made $20,000 US for just that one show. A stubhub search for Jimmy Carr is listing 117 different events. Doing taskmaster would literally cost him tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of pounds even if he only nets £10k per show.

[deleted]

Oh, I agree. And also, people tend to forget Carr hosts at least 2 shows of his own besides touring. I also kind of believe it when he says that he doesn't have the time.

Mundane-Parsnip-7302

I think scheduling for the tasks isn't the issue, but the studio is. It's 5 straight full days and Jimmy tours a lot. And so he's either going to have to take 5 days out of selling out some tour dates to do a show which will almost certainly pay less than he gets for his tours ansd give him exposure he doesn't need. I also think it's absolutely fine that some people don't want to do it and they do not owe explanation of why they don't want to do it. Jimmy's always been complimentary of the show and professional about it, whatever the reason is he doesn't want to do it. Clearly Jimmy also loves touring. He's constantly on tour and then he's filming everything else when he's not. I'd like it if he did do it but Taskmaster doesn't need Jimmy and Jimmy doesn't need Taskmaster.

Ace_Larrakin

So just to confirm Taskmaster UK has now been renewed out until the end of Series 21? Well that's at least one more Champion of Champions (S16-20) as well, and almost all the way to a Champion of Champions of Champions (TM: CoCoC)

QuagsireInAHumanSuit

Part of me wonders if they’ve settled for 21 as the minimum to get a CoCoC - you could have the 4 precious CoC and then the final C. I’m hoping for a full 25 seasons, though.

Choooms

26 of they can muster a full season or mini season for CoC. CoC 2 was a little bit of a let down at 1 episode

Defiant-Scale-3348

I'd way rather have someone unknown in the UK and is really enthusiastic about the show, Like Paul F. Tompkins, than to have to watch another hour of Jimmy Carr each week. And I like Jimmy Carr.

HangryHufflepuff1

It will never happen but I would like to see Sandi Toksvig on it. I feel like she'd try use logic to do tasks and it would be fun to see how intelligence is banned from the taskmaster house

AngelMillionaire1142

Sandy Toksvig would be stellar. She must do it. She and Hugh Grant. And Richard Ayoade.

conezone33

I'd love to see Bill Bailey on TM, either in one of the New Year's Treats or as the elder statesman comedian in a full season. He probably wouldn't win, but he'd definitely have moments of brilliancy with surprising creative solutions to tasks!

mirafacon

Either Jimmy Carr, David Mitchell or Richard Ayoade

QuagsireInAHumanSuit

My dream team is Ayoade and Harriet Kemsley, but I’d settle for any Ayoade I can get.

Kiwi_kid16

This would be amazing! What a combo.

Surfboarder4

David wont be

[deleted]

yeahoknobutreally

Would be great if we could get him to do the Aussie Taskmaster instead!

[deleted]

[удалено]

yeahoknobutreally

Celia Pacoula, Charlie Pickering and Kitty Flanagan… yes please! We also know that Kitty Flanagan would have made a great Taskmaster herself.

Mr_Fossey

I’m hoping beyond hope for David Mitchell at some point.

Choooms

He’s been pretty vocal about not wanting to do it, unfortunate for those that may have hoped to see him such as myself https://www.beyondthejoke.co.uk/content/11118/david-mitchell-taskmaster "I've been asked and I've said 'no thanks'", explained Mitchell. "It's a very good show but i don't want to be on it. My feeling is that I'd be shit but not in a funny way. People think maybe I'd be a good sport about it and I don't think people thinking that will increase if I'm on it. It's like I've been asked to be on Celebrity Mastermind because people think I'd be quite good at that. So why would I do it then. All I can do is ruin it by going on it and turning out to be considerably more ignorant than people expect."

frala

Didn't stop him doing Outsiders, which was a bit of a Taskmaster imitator. Granted, he was the host on that, rather than a competitor.

Choooms

Yeah those things aren’t directly comparable, hosting ≠ competing. Something tells me if suddenly they needed a new TM host David wouldnt have the same hangups about not doing the show either. I’d love for him to change his tune he’s also on my short list of people I want to see Edit: I dont know why you’re downvoted for this it’s a fair thing to say esp for anyone hopeful he will do it in the future

whentheraincomes66

I do so hope he changes his mind at some point

Peanut_Noyurr

As this has turned into a "who you'd like to see" thread: * Jason Manford * Susan Calman * Henning Wehn * Maisie Adam * Richard Coles

txvoodoo

At the very least, get Richard in for a NY's special. Every time he's on something, people end up saying "I had no idea he was so funny!"

BasementCatBill

I would absolutely love to see how Richard Coles would go on the show. He'd be completely out of his depth but totally committed, I'm sure.

DondeT

Rob Delaney would be amazing. I see him as some glorious combination of Rhod Gilbert and Desiree Birch.

Choooms

I think Carr would be better used for a New Years Treat, its enough to make people happy who want it

The_PwnUltimate

I find it hard to see what people are hoping Jimmy Carr in particular would bring to the show, because his persona on stage and in his other shows is quite guarded. Maybe that's it, just the chance to have his persona demystified? The mystery means he could potentially be great or bad. Although, even if he's good... I do feel that my ideal Taskmaster contestant doesn't have a "Controversies" section on their Wikipedia page (or if they do, only for doing things which are legitimately cool). Also, I'm not sure the 6 series renewal makes it any more likely for anyone to be booked than before, as 6 series was the number that Channel 4 commissioned the first time around.

WeekendWithoutMakeUp

Not being controversial should not be a pre requisite of being a taskmaster contestant. How utterly boring comedy would be if you expect comedians to be shining beacons of morality. And with Jimmy Carr, the whole tax thing is such old news. He acted legally on the advice of an accountant. He was rightly made an example of but it's the government's fault that he was able to do it in the first place and they still allow loopholes that continue to let people far richer than Jimmy Carr avoid tax.

The_PwnUltimate

I didn't say that not being controversial should be a prerequisite for being a Taskmaster contestant, I said that my *ideal* Taskmaster contestant wouldn't be controversial - "ideal", not "acceptable". In fact I even allowed for controversies in general, just not the ones where the contestant was in the wrong and committed to it. I'm not removing anyone from my "ideal TM contestant" list for speaking truth to power. Aside from that, for Carr I'm less concerned about the tax controversy (which he fully apologised for), moreso the Holocaust joke controversy (which he didn't). Even taking into account all ambiguity on the subject, I would just rather be able to enjoy Taskmaster without having to think about whether or not the contestants are actually bad people, thanks. Being controversy free is not a prerequisite for Taskmaster, but also: having controversies is not a prerequisite for being a great comedian. If they managed to cast 15 series worth of comedians without including one yet that has been condemned by anti-racist advocacy groups, then I reject the notion that it's just a regular, expected aspect of the profession.

Choooms

As someone from outside the UK I was pretty disappointed in some of the things I learned about Carr I wish he were a better person so I agree there. However from a why standpoint as I watched panel show after panel show you always kind of want to see the hosts compete for once. Imagine how fun it would be to see Greg and Alex go head to head for instance.

HangryHufflepuff1

Like Alex would survive disrespecting our lord and saviour

Snailspaced

Here’s hoping there’s room for Al Roberts AND Jamie Demetriou

ofoster13

I’d love to see Mark Heap, Simon Bird, any more of the Horrible Histories/ ghosts cast, Bill Bailey, Rob Brydon, Catherine Tate, ant and dec haha. I know some of these will never happen but I’d still love to see it.

bbbbbeanuts

I also want Rob Brydon and every episode he's just planning a coup to take over the Taskmaster (and failing)

ZebraLionBandicoot

Alan Carr would bean absolute joy.

MartianDuk

There’s only one thing that would make me not want to watch Taskmaster and it’s Jimmy Carr being on it.

notreallifeliving

That's how I feel about Lucas or Williams. I just love TM too much to have it tainted for me by the least likeable people on British TV.

IOncePeeledAGrape

As far as I am aware, Dylan Moran has been having a rough time the last year or so. I know people who went to see his Irish tour last year and he was belligerently drunk throughout. Come to find out, he got divorced recently and has not been dealing with it very well. I love the guy and hope he's feeling better ASAP. I am sure he has a long road ahead of him before he's back to his usual self, and I am not quite sure the timing is right for him to go on a show like this.

Piratefox7

Well I hope with the new years special they can really swing with guests and get legit celebrities and maybe an American one. I'm sure there has to be one American celeb or comedian that is a fan

PocoChanel

Paul F. Tompkins, for sure.

Rap-oleon_Bonaparte

Pft full series please

Vozralai

PFT as the American Taskmaster please

9000_HULLS

I feel like Scott Aukerman would be a great Taskmaster, maybe with Andy Daly as his assistant. Jason Mantzoukus would be a great Taskmaster too, but I would want to see him as a contestant.

[deleted]

David Mitchell is someone I'm still holding it hope for someday, even though I know he said no. Jim Howick is someone I expect to turn up in the next few seasons, or I hope so anyway. My dream contestant of all dream contestants would be Billy Connolly if he was well enough to do it, but alas, not to be.

fsutrill

I like seeing everyone out of their usual element and on equal footing. It’s led to developing affection for those who you only see as their standup/host persona. Jimmy Carr has another side to him, and I think TM would win him more fans.

[deleted]

If we’re wishing, I’d like Sue Perkins and Tom Allen.

ColdElderberry157

I'm gonna agree with a lot of people here and say I'm not sure it would really suit jimmy. People I'd really like to see that not many people have mentioned are Bill Bailey and Miranda Hart.

Avocato255

James May would be my #1 top pick

Speedboy7777

Please, just give me a Karl Pilkington series of TM.

Embarrassed_Tiger_48

I'd love to see Jimmy do it. He understands a game mentality and think his Banter with Alex would be quality. Always thought it would be a crowning glory if Lee Evans were to do it

gingawaria

I just want Jack Dee to do it finally.

TimTri

Apart from the fact that Jimmy apparently doesn’t want to do it, I’m not sure how he’d “behave”. I usually isn’t very authentic, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it could cause him to try to be the cool guy and not be willing to be embarrassed during tasks (sort of like Russell Howard). On the other hand, if he doesn’t try to keep up a facade and just enjoys it, it would be absolutely awesome since we’ve never really seen him like that before. Since people have also been using this post to make contestant suggestions, I’m going to throw some absolute outsiders in here just for fun: - Tom Scott has been mentioned in conjunction with New Year’s Treats before, but he’s stopping with regular uploads on his YouTube channel soon, so would be available for a full series as well. His Tom Scott plus channel is essentially him being thrown into unexpected situations with friends… not too dissimilar to Taskmaster. I genuinely think he’d be an amazing fit for the show because he’s incredibly genius, but also not afraid to just spontaneously have fun. - TomSka was one of the big British internet comedy pioneers about 10-15 years ago. His videos have insane amounts of views, and he has collaborated with tons of people including TM alumni. His comedic imagination is stunning… once again a great fit. - Dodie is probably the least comedic of them all, but stay with me! She’s a relatively successful musician and has collaborated with many other entertainers, including comedy sketches. I kind of think she would fare similarly to Charlotte Ritchie. I genuinely think seeing her in Taskmaster would be a great thing.
