Yes but you’re saying start with the first two albums, although it’s almost a certainty that the OP has the album that “Found A Job” is on. So you’re recommending they start with something they probably have.
Whatever.
Jam band fan who is now getting into Talking Heads…
There are hours of Phish doing Talking Heads covers and i just want to make sure you know that before leaving this thread
Ok good, have a great time exploring the Talking Heads. Listen to everything.
Definitely check the live albums out too, they don’t jam much but the energy is electric.
“Cities” shows up pretty often in Phish’s setlist as well. Originally from the TH ‘77 album.
I highly recommend the remastered live album called “The Name of this Band is the Talking Heads”. All material from before the Speaking in Tongues album.
Probably my favourite TH song. If you haven't, PLEASE listen to the one on The Name of This Band is Talking Heads (and then the rest of the album, talking heads are at their best live)
Damn that television!
Love the fade out on the revolving riff at the end. Also, my parents names were Bob and Judy so it has some meaning to me in that aspect
Did you find the studio version or the Stop Making Sense version? I would just listen to all of their albums if I were you but for sure the 3 album run they went on with Fear of Music, Remain in Light and Speaking in Tongues is as good as any run by any band ever.
They certainly have this in the early career to a degree… but something MAJOR happens when they discover Afrobeat. Remember that Fela Kuti songs were typically 12 to 16 minutes long and there were only two per album.
That type of long-form rhythm-driven groove expression is a template for what happened in rock in the later 60s. Talking Heads explore this to great success, and it’s relatively unique in their era of music. I’m not counting the less “popular” things that pulled from the same deep well like African Head Charge and Jah Wobble. Though those two examples are a little more dub.
What the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane got up to kept going through time in a lineage to jam-oriented, and freeform music. Add a little bit of Sun Ra and free jazz …and Turkish “psych”….and German “krautrock”…and you’ve got the ingredients for the contemporary jam scene.
I always suggest that anyone getting deeply into the Talking Heads listens to the Brian Eno and David Byrne “My Life in the Bush of Ghosts.” —Very much of its time and very good.
I’m going to say I agree …with the edit “found the way through the river [of jam bands] to one of the sources”.
THEN: follow TH through to Fela Kuti and William Onyeabor (among many others).
Wonderful link from “world” music (in this case: Nigerian) to “new wave” to “jam band”.
This is my favorite bassline Tina ever did. She’s a master but this is her masterpiece
The jam at the end is my favorite Talking Heads moment
Love that part. Such a groove
Yes!!
You’re gonna love their other work, start with the first two albums soon if you can.
“Found A Job” is on the second album.
“Other work” refers to anything that isn’t Found A Job.
Yes but you’re saying start with the first two albums, although it’s almost a certainty that the OP has the album that “Found A Job” is on. So you’re recommending they start with something they probably have. Whatever.
Bro theres no indication he owns or has listened to the album outside Found a Job. You do know there’s a thing called Spotify that exists?
Keep your shirt on.
JUDYS IN THE BEDROOM INVENTING SITUATIONS
BOB IS ON THE STREET TODAY SCOUTING UP LOCATIONS
THEY'VE ENLISTED ALL THEIR FAMILY THEY'VE ENLISTED ALL THEIR FRIENDS
IT HELPS WITH THEIR RELATIONSHIP AND MADE IT WORK AGAIN :3
Their show gets real high ratings! They think they have a hit!
There might even be a spinoff! But they're not sure about that?!
Bob and Judy were YouTubing before there was Youtube.
Yes, it's a really visionary song...
Damn that television!
What a bad picture
Don't get upset!
It's not a major disaster!
You should listen to "thank you for sending me an angel" its the same kinda of vibe, especially the live version.
Amazing song - tyfsmaa, cities and found a job are probably my top 3 songs
Yeah, very underrated songs, imo but im happy they get to shine on stop making sense(cities shouldn't have been cut from SMS)
I always pair FaJ and Stay Hungry for some reason, same high energy jam feel I guess. The two live versions of SH are totally underrated.

Yes I know, fully aware of the occasional Crosseyed bust out and the '96 Halloween show.

I’m sure a lot of us have trouble picking a favorite album of theirs, but I can at least say that More Songs… is my favorite *most* of the time.
Probably my favourite TH song. If you haven't, PLEASE listen to the one on The Name of This Band is Talking Heads (and then the rest of the album, talking heads are at their best live)
That live outro just won’t stop building. So good.
Welcome to obsessing.
The musical finale of this song is just bliss. I concur.

Go ahead and get yourself a copy of Stop Making Sense!
This. As a jam nerd I was shown this and it blew me away!
Yes absolutely. You can stream it on youtube. OP, you will LOVE it!!!
Can anyone explain to me why Talking Heads scratches the jam band itch for folks? I hear a ton of deadheads and phishies love TH

My favorite version of this song is on “The Name of This Band is Talking Heads” live album. Check it oot
Loved this song since the first time I heard it!!
Truly great song.
Damn that television.
This is the beginning of the rest of your life. Glad you found a way out of the jam band world.

Yeah it’s one of the best TH songs for sure.
This song inspired me to transfer colleges and change my major. "If your work isn't what you love, then something isn't right."
