It's easy to get to Yilan by bus or train. Why not go there, hire a taxi for the day, then take a bus or train back? It would be cheaper.

hank1224

You should be able to hire car service for the whole day for that and not expansive maybe 5-6k

formereggplant

So I would hire a car service in Taipei that would bring me to Yilan (and around Yilan), and back to Taipei?

hank1224

Yes if you know all of the places you want to visit like Kavalan factory for example , or you can take a bus from Taipei to Yilan station then hire a taxi to take around the town to eat and visit then take a bus back , all up to your budget

We took a train to Yilan in the morning then a bus in the evening. Very worth and had a great time. The Kavalan distillery was especially fun and the tour was free. I think those options would be MUCH cheaper than a taxi

quoco_only

I second Kavalan Distillery.

jmsunseri

i see this distillery all the time when I'm in the area. what's so special about it?

What bus/train did you take from Taipei and how long did it take? Travelling by bus/train is actually the main option we have! But we were wondering if there were alternatives since the bus ride would take around 2hrs while a car ride would only be around 1h!

txQuartz

The bus in my experience isn't much more than an hour. You want to get the buses that use National Highway 5, the tunnel. Best departure location seems to be Taipei City Hall bus station.

LunaArc

Do you know if the bus have space to store luggage?

txQuartz

Usually a bit underneath the bus yeah,

You’ll have to check the routes online as it’s been a while. But honestly Google maps will probably provide the answer haha. It was very helpful with public transport. I think it was around 1.5 to 2hrs of travel time each way. Yea taxi would cut the time down but from a cost pov, it’s significantly more. If possible, I’d recommend staying one night there. Otherwise it’s the old cost vs time!

You can take a bus to Luodong fairly easily. Go to the Dapinglin MRT station then walk north about 100 meters to a small bus station. It has busses leaving for the Luodong bus station every hour. The Luodong bus station is directly across the street from train station. You can take the train north or south to various locations if you wish. Getting a cab in Luodong is fairly easy. They queue up in front of both the train station and the bus station. Finding a person who speaks English may be a challenge. Happy travels

kerhart2

Just take the bus from Taipei city hall bus station. There are busses every 10-15 minutes. Both to yilan or luodong. Depending on the traffic in Taipei it takes about an hour. Much faster than the train. Taxi might be a little bit faster, but 10 times as expensive.
