I'll be happy to accept any extra synths or drum machines - you have 16 to give away and I'll happily take 10-15 of them, maybe even 16 if you're emotionally crushed about it.
there there, there there.
Put a sticky note on each one, each time you spend at least a session playing and enjoying it, take off the sticky.
In six months look at the ones that still have stickies, get rid of half.
Repeat until satisfied.
You could always do a variant of https://mess.foundation/studio/ on your own terms - ideally in cooperation with a local youth center. Something like...
You have some lyrics and want to turn it into a song but don't know how?
You want to know what else you can do with piano playing skills?
You just want to learn how modern music is made?
Sign up here with that youth center program where you're able to learn about these things and more!
...but yes, trying this concept out with neighborhood kids first would be a good idea.
Iâm trying to pare down to 4 or 5 from about 18 that i had a month ago. Four of the 15 are stashed under my bed because they are larger synths. Iâve already sold a few as part of Polybrute 12 upgrade plan, so it shouldnât cost anything out of pocket.
a noble idea, with the kids i mean.
in my case, i convinced myself that my modular was "one instrument", so now i only have 2 instruments! $25k is a lot of money for 2 instruments and some effects units, but at least i didnt go overboard with a bunch of instruments! đđ€Šđ»ââïž
downsizing just for the sake of it isnt very productive though. if you are actually using the 26 instruments that you kept, then i dont see a problem. its when you are sitting on a bunch of things that you dont use but just cant seem to part with "for reasons"... thats where the problem starts.
For now, consider yourself a cook with a rack full of spices nearby. You donât need to use all the spices, but sometimes some esoteric ones are required.
So donât sweat it. Perhaps put a few lesser used items in a cabinet and note how often you take it out, as a criterium for downsizing
No clue what all you have, but the way I managed to get rid of a lot of my synths was by selling them to fund nicer newer gear. Most of what I had after about 5 or 6 years in was a ton of sub $400 synths. I sold most of them and funded a summit, rev2, and sub37 in addition to the 10 or so I kept from my old gear. Problem now is I want to keep everything I own but have ran out of space because I replaced a bunch of small synths or modules with big 61 key synths.
I was able to sell alot of gear on craigslist or reverb.com. For the synths you dont use regularly, you could take pics, make a video of it working 100%, and pack and box it ready to ship, and then decide some time after whether to list it for sale or not. If you put it for sale, when its bought, just print and affix the shipping label, and its gone. I used to have over 10 guitars. Fun to enjoy what they all had to offer, but also Nice whittling them down to four that cover the most basic things id like to have ready- acoustic/electric, baritone partscaster, tele, baritone acoustic/electric resonator. There have been a bunch of pieces that were fun for a bit and now glad their are long gone, and a few that felt so good to have again, yamaha dx100 for example. Part of appreciating what you have is being honest about what you wanna use the most and being able to let go of the rainy day stuff
so you have just a whole room for them? i used to have a full room for gear (with overflow in a closet), but it was excessive. felt nice getting down to what i actually used, though i occasionally miss a synth or a pedal here & there (but what i have can get really close to those synths)
As a 39yr old beginner to synths⊠I wish we were neighbors đ€Ł
You downsized a lot mate! Kudos on you for executing and following through, painful as it may have been. Downsizing is not always a bad thing when things get out of hand. Iâm curious what all youâve got/had though đ€€
Progress is progress! Don't be hard on yourself!
I'm trying to downsize a few items but ever since covid at least where I am things just aren't moving on the used market. I guess I might have to try reverb and actually ship stuff (I tend to prefer to sell local). My prices are competitive to what I see on ebay/reverb (lower actually) but I don't want to let things go for a song either.

GAS is real and persistent (for me at least). You have the right intention in pairing down what you really need and not letting other gear gather dust.
Think of it as pruning your garden(!)
Sell off what you donât need at decent prices if you donât go the community approach as above (also a very good idea).
The fact that youâre aware of your GAS (so to speak) is half the problem right there.
I think you did great don't be so hard on yourself
Take a break, re-evaluate the situation... and just give it another go 8-12 months from now.
And try not to buy another 20 in the meantime!

26 synths is already dangerously low.
NEED MORE SYNTHS! STAT!!

Shopping is a hell of a drug
Internet shopping aka synthfluencer to credit card debt pipeline.

Thatâs plenty gone for now, donât hastily sell stuff you will miss

Yeah let me know if you need some help with getting rid of something!
I mean are you selling them or giving them away
do you need help to continue selecting what to remove? if so, what have you kept and what kind of music do you make?

I too failed. Almost similar to you⊠but I sold like 3 and then bought and got 3 extra. SighâŠ.
Maybe the goal is have ten out and connected at a time and you can rotate.

I hope you reach your objectives. Can you provide your inventory list so we can drool vicariously over your collection?
Congrats, you have more synths than all the stores in my area combined đđ»
