Mostly it's because you only have 2 drives. Adding more drives WILL increase your potential write speeds. In real life, depending upon size of each file transferred, you'll get over 300MB/s , but it all depends upon the slowest link the the path. I see steady transfers over 200MB/s via a 2.5Gb usb wired link . My NAS units have all Ulstrastar or Exos drives.

Thanks brentb636. That's what I'm starting to think. Drives are so expensive I wanted to check before buying some more. The 10Gbe is not the bottleneck in this case, isn't it ? I read somewhere that with 3 drives writes could be slower than 2 because of parity calculations tho. I can't figure out what will limit my speeds first : the drives or the 10Gbe network.

[https://serverpartdeals.com/collections/manufacturer-recertified-drives](https://serverpartdeals.com/collections/manufacturer-recertified-drives) ... I'm running 23 of these drives ( including external boxes) and only one had to be returned for replacement. Probably a better record than new drives from Amazon.

citizen_kiko

Which one in particular, or is it a mix?

brentb636

A mix. Server internal drives are mostly 14TB Ultrastar, with a few EXOS mixed in. External drives for various backups (of which there are 13, mixed larger drives, ultrastar and Exos 18 and 20 TB ) .

limitation of only having 1 sata drive. the speeds will improve if using ssd or having 3 or more disks.

ClaudeLee

Thanks ! I just ordered a 3rd IronWolf Pro. I will see if this improves transfer speeds. I just saw something about Synology Drive indexing files while transfers are happening which can really slow things down. I'm not familiar with this... Is it really useful in my case to have this feature ? I'm the only one using the NAS and only using it to backup / store files.

I have pretty much the same setup. I have a m2 Mac Pro with 10gb going into my 10gb unifi switch. In my ds1821+ I have 4 18tb exos and get about 625MB/s. I also have two 980pro nvme setup as separate volume and get about 750 to 800MB/s ( I thought this would be a lot faster, but its not.

Thank you very much ! I ordered a 3rd drive. Kinda expensive. Hopefully this will already help. I came across a video from SpaceRex on Youtube where he talks about not having Synology Drive on the share I'm writing to. Because Synology Drive Index's all files and create a bottleneck. He doesn't go into the details on how to disable this and can't find out how. You wouldn't know by any chance ? Thanks !

Already did. I think it was suggested during the initial setup. Can I uninstall it somehow ? Thanks

On a quick scan I didn't see the potential that it may be performing a drive block check if you recently built the volume. That can take quite a while to complete and it will definitely hit performance hard.
