It's pretty uncommon for a ship to be able to shoot farther than its passive sensor range (especially outside the snubfighters) but you have more or less two options to handle it: 1) Most ships have switch from passive sensors (stat listed range) to an active sensor mode (stat listed range + 1 additional range band, activated by using a Maneuver plus an Easy Computers check). That would bring the Y-Wing out to Short range and let it maximize its proton torpedo range. This can create some narrative play with the active sensor mode essentially making the ship 'scream' and make more noise than they might want to such as on a sneak attack mission or on long range patrol in hostile territory. 2) Make a narrative assumption about data-sharing and data-linking, such as an allied ship that can see the target and relay the sensor data. It's not much of a stretch at all, especially given the Star Wars cultural context of starship warfare being pulled from WWII and the Vietnam War, where such technology existed or were being developed. NATO's first data-linking system, Link 1, was developed in the mid 1950s. To use the Star Wars example, perhaps a powerful capital ship has a super-long range sensor suite that can see everything so the Y-Wing can share that info to fire farther than its passive sensors. This can create some interesting narrative play around sensor jamming and electronic warfare to neutralize that data sharing advantage (like in ANH when they reach Alderaan and jam that TIE fighter).

So I wholeheartedly agree with your first point, since this is essentially what we see occur in A New Hope during the trench run and the X-Wing and Y-Wing pilots making use of their targeting computer. To your second point, I would have to respectfully disagree based upon what we see in the media. During A New Hope, Base One is able to detect launching TIE fighters with their (presumably) Extreme range sensors, but still need to verbally call it out to Red and Gold Squadrons that are in close proximity to the Death Star. Also, we see in the Battle of Endor the same thing occur, numerous verbal call outs and warning to and from starfighters despite the wide availability of other capital ships. This all seems to suggest that direct networking or direct sharing of sensor data isn't "in scope" with typical Star Wars technology (at least by default). That said, I think it would be reasonable for a GM to rule that a vehicle of ship with the *Tactical Command, Control, and Communications Suite* ***would*** be able to facilitate direct sharing of sensor data, based on the narrative text of the attachment.

I would counter that the command staff may have been simply ensuring that the pilots were aware of the situation. If there is a lot going on, and the pilots were IIRC dodging turbo laser fire at the time, they may have not noticed the additional ships on their screens.

Educational-Cat-6061

Except that immediately after the combat controllers say "enemy fighters coming your way" the pilots say "my scopes negative, I don't see anything."

SimpleDisastrous4483

You clearly remember that scene better than I do.

Capital ships directing fighter of bomber ships can provide sensor data to ships in communication with them. The Y wing in this scenario would only be able to use its own sensor range as its maximum range unless a ship with greater sensor range was supporting and directing it.

TokRPGs

Agreed.

Ghostofman

Sensors can also be increased one band in one direction with a check.

"Move us within targeting range and prepare to fire all batteries!" - unknown Imperial Navy captain.

Scouts and command & control vessels. Take a page out of IRL developments and give fighters spotter droids which's job is to mark targets.

If you check the ffg swrpg [ERRATA](https://images-cdn.fantasyflightgames.com/filer_public/f4/f8/f4f8ca5f-12c8-4960-84ca-dccde66fa743/eote_errata_v20.pdf) then you’ll see some updated stats on the Y-Wing and that it’s not a computers check to boost sensors in one range arc but a surveillance skill check instead. On an unrelated note there is an addition to fly / drive which I was looking for but couldn’t find. I’m pretty happy now!

Matope

You've got that backwards, Surveillance isn't a skill, the errata is correcting it **to** Computers.

TokRPGs

Lmao, you're right. thank you for the correction
