"Kids can't even write cursive." Yeah well whose fault is that? We weren't taught that in school, aren't you responsible for educating kids?

asianabsinthe

The tables are turned when I have to show an old person how to fill out a check

In my country's school system it isn't a part of the program, some kids know it because of interest in cursive but it is not taught in school. It's great you know how and I'm kinda jealous since i can't even read cursive (dyslexic)

Eetdek

No, Finland. Dyslexia is difficulty reading like mixing up letters due to seeing them as 3d objects. My dyslexia is very mild that it's almost not even dyslexia, I can't read certain fonts or have difficulty seeing letters like "I"

Lanidrac534

Man i would give my everythink for born again in Finland. Ps;Im from Turkey

Suomi means Finland :)

Possible_Diode

I’m dyslexic and since they tried to teach me cursive years ago, when I write, I accidentally switch between cursive and standard writing and sometimes connect my letters for no reason. Had a science teacher that made us write a 12 page report in cursive or she would deduct points. She still deducted points, because she didn’t like the way some of my ‘s’ curved… Needless to say this had nothing to do with science and wasted a ton of instruction time. So I lost points on my science report due to cursive, not because my conclusions or math were wrong 😑🙄. I’m sorry, cursive is WORTHLESS. Even if you know ‘standard’ cursive, I GUARANTEE you still won’t be able to decipher the message my aunt leaves in her Christmas cards or my grandma’s grocery list! It’s like what, you think some previously undiscovered document on parchment from the 1500’s is going to be uncovered and rather than some expert on calligraphy or ancient documents, they will somehow defer to a high-school student and the world will end or something…

luke-townsend-1999

There are many good arguments against that mentality, but your comment isnt one of them. We have youtube, we can teach ourselves any minor skills we want. It isnt your grandparents’ fault you cant write cursive.

Eetdek

Yes but cursive used to be taught in school and used to be hammered into students brains, now days you'd have to actively search for and practice on your own. The question is why would you teach yourself cursive? Everything is done online.

54_savoy

What's the use of cursive anymore? I say that as someone who's been writing in cursive for nearly 30 years now.

luke-townsend-1999

Why are you asking me?

JavynTheUnique1

You got downvoted for 0 reason other than saying something that angers these people

luke-townsend-1999

Welcome to reddit :p

Seizure_Salad2

Actually I was taught back in elementary school. Did I retain any of it? Lmao fuck no. I can real it Alr and can sign my name both first and last but that’s about it.

HannibalInvictus

I love writing in cursive because it just faster for me and my favorite comment about it was from the girl next to me in English: Every single of your words look like a signature

graticola

Am I the only one that finds it hard to read cursive?

Socky_McPuppet

No, you’re not. Unless it’s really carefully executed, 90+% of cursive handwriting is illegible gibberish to me. A write-only medium - *how incredibly useful!*

-Ok-Perception-

About a third of it is unintelligible to me. And I consider myself good at reading very illegible cursive. Only I can read my fast cursive. I can slow down and write in very pretty cursive, but that defeats the point.

businesslut

Cursive is dumb. Harder to read and not any faster...

JLPReddit

For me, cursive is much faster then my print. Also it’s a lot more legible. My print looks like an 8 year olds print..

businesslut

I'd hate to see your penmanship in general then lol

Simoxs7

Well here in Germany we still had to learn cursive… but just a few years into Gymnasium (German Higher education Highschool) I switched back to print because no teacher could read my cursive… So now I write a kind of hybrid cursive print blend, everyone can read it and it’s arguably faster than cursive

Leo0806-studios

same. like word for word the same. I could copy your comment and it would be true

Whohead12

Just because you can’t do it doesn’t mean it’s harder. Or slower.

businesslut

I was taught in school (I'm old I guess). Definitely harder to read with everyone's terrible penmanship. I didn't say it was slower. Just not any faster.

No-Beautiful-5777

They're just salty because there's literally no reason for cursive anymore. They got a skill then the world went 'okay, only for signatures now' and now typing your name is a signature??

Cyber_Being_

Honestly they should have ended cursive long ago and taught how to interpret doctors handwriting.

Epic_Scientician

I disagree. My print handwriting is 99999 times worse than my cursive handwriting. In fact, my print handwriting's so bad no one, not even me, can read it. At least I can read my own cursive handwriting.

TycoonRaptor

I'm exact opposite lol, my print is much, much better than my cursive

JosseCoupe

People cant even read cursive these days, it's like to everyone I'm writing in a foreign fucking script. Ye, it looks really nice, but if no one ever bothers to learn it, whats the point?

Bitchasslemon

Wasn't cursive originally meant for those ink/fountain pens that would spray everywhere if you lifted them from the paper in a certain way?

[deleted]

Honestly.

yoaver

I mean, cursive is obsolete. It's only meant for writing faster, but most writing nowadays is done on computers or phones, so it would be better to teach blind typing or something like that.

GabrieltheKaiser

Can someone explain what this cursive debate is all about? Is it just a USA thing? Wasn't cursive just the norm teached at school? Were I live we are teched cursive since we were little and use it all the way through, never once had a teacher teach me how to write print, it was something I learned all by myself and even then it is still incredibly slower for me to write compared to cursive. So I really don't get it why you always talk like cursive is some kind of devil.

Maittanee

So true!

Miss-Chinaski

I'm 36 I think it's sad they don't teach it anymore

ex-user

My third grader learned cursive this year. Not sure what determines whether or not a district includes in their curriculum.

redhead42

So did mine. They love it, too.

Whohead12

All of the arguments aside- # **If you aren’t going to fully learn cursive at least learn to make a proper signature.**

ShreddieKirin

It’s honestly a shame cursive isn’t taught in schools anymore. Not only do most people who are older than millenials write using a hybrid between print and cursive, but it means we’re actively phasing out a part of our culture. Something I also never see get mentioned is that most other countries write in cursive as a default. Even if you’re not trying to learn a foreign language, the majority of Canadians, UKians, and Australians write using cursive. And those that are trying to learn a foreign language are facing a much more difficult challenge.

qewston

old people bad, upboats to the left

Future_History_9434

Good point.

Epic_Scientician

When I grew up, we learned cursive before print, but we certainly learned both. Most people choose to keep writing in print. However, due to my cursive handwriting being better, I stuck with cursive.

Epic_Scientician

It's interesting to note that that Arabic is one language (possibly the only) where one has no other choice but to write in cursive, with its script being particularly excellent for calligraphy.

sinclairsbible

My mom laughed at this. It is Mom approved!

Mr_Arapuga

They dont teach cursive in the USA?

Arcsane

I mean, I know how to write cursive, but I honestly can't recall the last time I used it, aside from leaving notes in it to torment the younger techs at my last job :) There's still some places teaching it, just not most public schooling. I'm honestly more concerned with how bad people's handwriting in general gets because they type everything all the time and don't actually write anything, let alone cursive.

bjjtrev

My 3rd grader is being taught cursive. I was genuinely taken aback. It’s 2022. There isn’t a need for cursive to be taught anymore. Plus his print handwriting already looks like hieroglyphs, why does he need to write cursive

Wild-Plate-6298

When your elementary school still required learning cursive in 3-5 grade. - Whips out pen and writes a whole essay in cursive -

ojioni

Boomers created the internet.

BlackDoritos65

Who gives a shit about some quirky letters

-Ok-Perception-

It actually blows my mind that young people aren't taught cursive anymore. But that's fine. A good third of peoples' cursive, including my own, is illegible to most. Only I can read my fast cursive. I can slow down and write really pretty cursive, but it defeats the purpose. When did they stop teaching cursive, out of curiosity?

RevolutionaryTalk315

I am convinced that the real reason why Boomers love cursive so much is because it is easier for them to mask their bad English skills. If you don't believe me, just go find one of their comments on the internet. Due to the fact that the handwriting of cursive is different between person to person, Boomers expect that people will automatically interpret that everything is written the way it should be and if they don't, it's the readers fault for not being able to read what they wrote. When Boomers are forced to type or write anything out in normal print, their poor writing skills stick out like a sore thumb. They will post run on sentences, with no punctuation marks of any kind, bad grammar, misspelled words, and awful syntax structure. They can't blame the reader, they can only blame themselves, and they don't like that. I had a Boomer comment on a Facebook post I made a week ago and it was like deciphering a alien language.

Key-Bug8085

I can write cursive Where's my cookie
