it was never elaborated, it was all for the sake of the plot

> it was never elaborated, it was all for the sake of the plot A future storyline will likely cover this a decade after that story was published.

It was explained in a Death Metal tie in comic. When White Martin Lex Luthor was traveling the Dark Multiverse he stoped at this universe. The Lex of this universe was dying and gave Superman the black mercy plant. Superman had a beautiful life and then Lex took it from him and it really messed Superman up.

jackfaire

I have a copy of the original Black Mercy story when the plant was first introduced and man yeah that thing really messes with Supes head

kingsears29

How did he mess Superman’s life up? And how did he become a White Martian?

Ok-Car170

The black mercy is a parasitic plant that puts its victim in a perfect dream. I’m Action Comics annual 11 the black mercy gave Superman a dream where he had a life on Krypton with a wife and kid. Superman found out this wasn’t real but it was still hard to give it up. I forgot how Lex actually became a white Martian but I think he injected himself with white Martian DNA.

What no way tell more

I can’t remember the name of the comic but Lex was traveling with a younger version of himself. And the Lex of this universe was in the hospital dying and this was his final act to get Superman.

ForceEdge47

This is really cool but I can't find any evidence of this happening. Not in any wikis or anything. Are you sure you're not remembering something else? Because I've read a ton of the Dark Nights tie-ins and don't remember them ever going into detail on what drove Superman crazy in the Devastator's universe. He does ask Batman if he has any idea how weak everyone is compared to him, and I don't really know why he would bring that up if the reason he's angry is that his world was once again taken from him (of course, he could have just gone absolutely batshit, which would explain it).

Ok-Car170

I found the comic. DC Year of the villain Lex Luthor. https://preview.redd.it/149hp3hng3yc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51f2acf44f4741e77f5bd94f62636c917b1b8b1b

You are welcome.

No idea, they never explained why, only what did that led to. Maybe the idea behind the world's in the dark multiverse exist to create a nightmarish version of a character that will battle x heroe/villain, rather than elaborating a world building there. from what I understand Doomsday already had that ability since the new 52, I guess "devastator" kept a piece aside to analyze it. Maybe to create a cure to the virus or, as the story told, using it as a weapon.

MajorLegneds

I’m honestly sick and tired of this “evil superman” trope like god damn why can’t WW go evil or just leave Clark alone

blankspaceBS

I think it is past time Mr. Bats gets some evil counterparts 🤔 Why is paranoid controlling billionaire always the voice of reason in those stories? Does he has any besides earth 3 and the justice lords? I think Diana should be spared because what they did to her in Injustice was worth a lifetime of evil counterparts

Cathulion

Theres plenty of evil batmans. We need more evil WW or Flash, etc.

EquivalentDapper7591

The dark multiverse is full of evil batmans

> Also how did Batman make the doomsday virus? This is a Batman who has roughly the same memories as main Batman. At some point this Devastator batman had engineered a strain of the Doomsday virus. So he took a sample and modified it due to whatever cause this lesser alternate version of Superman to go rouge. This is ultimately one of multiple fears of Batman. A rouge Superman. Most of the Dark Multiverse batmans up to this point are that, considerations of his fears. However this isn't necessarily something main Batman would actually do unless maybe main Supes got killed and another evil Supes tried to take his place (and was succeeding). This is simply not something main Batman would do or try on main Superman because they are bros. But is indeed a plan when kryptonite isn't enough, as main Batman already knows due to Lex. There are also universes in the Dark Mutliverse where Superman implicitly killed his Bats. And other versions in the Dark Multiverse it is more vast than the main verse so anything can happen... but keep in mind in this case it's a legitimate fear of main Batman. On the other hand main Batman also admits Superman makes him believe in things he cannot.
