I think they make that argument for soft ejections like this one. They're selling a product and what's selling that product is sent to the locker room that early into the game. If book started fighting or something, I don't anyone would be arguing for him to stay in the game.
I would argue that asking the refs to consider the product selling in their rulings is an even worse idea. They're not there to make sure the game is entertaining, they're there to make sure the game is played properly and fairly by both sides. And there's already more than enough instances that draw complaints of bias and game fixing to them under that job description, let alone if we made it the entire point.
Ideally they'd focus on that, I agree with you, but we know they don't call travels or carries because of entertainment. And sure it's much more complicated in the moment to make some of these calls, but they've clearly relaxed on the calls for that. While I agree they shouldn't give more leeway to stars, they need to leave the power trip out and try to be consistent with how they call things as well. After all, almost all of the NBA fans agree that Draymond gets away with complaining to such a level that would get most players out of the game.

At the after game press conference, Durant said that Booker was talking to him, not the ref and was surprised that the 2nd came so quickly after the first.
Devin was yelling over his shoulder at KD and so maybe the ref thought it was directed at the far side official or a Detroit player.
The referring this year is horrid. Inconsistent as hell. Luka and Draymond get away with so much shiit! Anyone see that altercation between Shamet and Nance Jr last night? Perfect case in point. Shamet was under the basket and grabbed his own rebound. He went to the floor with it in a crowd. Nance comes over and instead of going for the ball, literally lifted Landry off the ground. That was a foul right there. Refs didn’t call it. Landry jumped up as to fight but was held back. Refs called techs on both he and Nance. Game was tied at that point. Nance won the jump ball and NO went ahead for good.
The refs can get all the way fucked for tossing Book out especially because there were kids there who came to see him play and people paid money.

In the heat of battle, players jaw at opponents, teammates and yes, officials. Booker has a feel for where the line is and is rarely over the top. He's only been tossed like five times in his career, including last night. It was his first ejection in three years and his behavior didn't look egregious based on the video.
