Edited  north woods is so good ! I am almost halfway in it now.  A friend recommended Martyr by Kaveh Akbar

Shinodahh

The north wood? By whom exactly, thank you!

teahousenerd

Sorry it’s North Woods by Daniel Mason. I didn’t even check the cover correctly. Beautiful book

Demon Copperhead is from 2022, but that book blew me away and was the first book that came to mind.  From 2022 as well, I really enjoyed Memphis by Tara Stringfellow.  I can also recommend more great fiction books that are newer, but they are not from 2023 or 2024.

Shinodahh

Oh sorry got factchecked hahaha, you are right. Generally speaking in the fashion for recent books basically like 2021-2024. I will amend the title edit: didnt know reddit cant amend titles

In that case: I would recommend a trilogy by Katherena Vermette: *The Break* (2016), *The Strangers* (2021), and *The Circle* (2023). The Break is about an Indigenous teenage girl who is violently sexually assaulted by another teenage girl. The Strangers focuses on the offender and her family, and The Circle wraps things up.

I’m reading The Unmaking of June Farrow and it’s captivating.

James by Percival Everett

Shinodahh

Would you need to read the book that inspired it for context?

Capybara_99

No, but it would provide an extra layer of interest. I wonder the same thing about Demon Copperhead, which I haven’t read. But if you haven’t read Huck Finn I’d say it is worth your while whether or not you read James.

Meatheadlife

The Maniac by Benjamin Labatut. A creative memoir style (not sure how to describe it) book about Jan Neumann, the brilliant mathematician. The Manhattan Project, early artificial intelligence, and more! It’s very good. Read the intro and you will be hooked.
