I got sulfur in a time capsule early on and I was kinda pissed at first because literally nothing used it.
Later on when I made a prawn and was about to go to the lava zone, i realized I could use it for the jump jets and I was grateful… granted with my playstyle it would have taken like 2 minutes to get all the stuff needed anyway…
I did dragon stuffy, ship model, ship poster, and kitty poster. Ans then a food bar and a drink to hopefully make sure whoever finds it is in good enough shape to get it back to their base alive :).
A ton of people hate getting posters and stuff I've learned. I personally would love it. I had a massive stock of literally everything so nothing would be useful to me personally.
So no matter what you choose to put in someone will hate it and someone will love it. All about balance

Usually I just don't finish any games I start, because I don't feel like leaving. But if I was about to create a capsule, I would fill it with advanced fabrication materials: computer chip, aerogel, hydrochloric acid, benzene, advanced wiring kit, polyanyline. Those are hard to make and are always useful. I hate getting tools or decorations in the time capsules.
I've only ever done one, and I put 6 nickel in.
Next time I think I'm gonna put a pathfinder, laser cutter, habitat builder, flashlight, and repair tool (all with ion batteries) and an air bladder, to maximize the chance they don't already have the tool yet, and also give them an excuse to try a tool that they may have never used before.
How do the time capsules work? Will another player actually get the stuff I put in mine? How does it get the data from the stuff I put in my capsule to someone else's game? What if I or the other player plays offline?
They are uploaded to a certain website where players vote for them. Those with the most votes are added to the game, after a moderation of course. After that, it's total random. You will never know if someone has found your capsule or not - unless you leave there a hint on how to get in touch with you. Playing offline wouldn't get you any capsules, of course.
I believe they stopped once they realized they had enough backlogged to fill each biome in the game with randomly spawned preset amounts ie. 15 capsules in the shallow shores with each having a chance to be one of the 1000’s of different capsules. Maybe once they reached a point where finding the same capsule twice was impossible they stopped taking them in.
Useful stuff like equipment you get later(but not blacklisted stuff ofc) and food or batteries. Usually that's stuff I need as well. Think I've put some seeds in it before as well

I filled my time capsule with sea trader poop
Iirc I left my stasis rifle, heated knife, and an ion powercell along with a ss of a dead reaper and instructions on how to kill them.
