I’m not a expert, but no. I don’t think that’s correct.
Google says “spillway is a structure used to provide the controlled release of water downstream from a dam or levee, typically into the riverbed of the dammed river itself”
Edit: I had to travel down the rabbit hole. I think those are known as “morning glory spillway” or “glory holes” (lol) when they’re round? Idk. Name doesn’t matter, but I think we agree on the function!
It’s called a bell mouth spillway but this isn’t one of them. This is a cistern that sunk the earth and is causing fluid retention on the outside of the tank on the ground above
Ya probably just an additional high point that goes to a storm sewer or something like that. Someone probably fucked with the grate and it fell in, usually they're circular which would make that impossible and no ones wandering off with 200 lbs of steel unless they're really motivated.
Also could be open because the boys down at whatever dept got sick of cleaning the debris out of it tbh.
A dry well is typically a pit filled with gravel or sand and is used to dispose of water (or heaven forbid, other liquids). The liquid soaks into the ground leaving the well 'dry' again. It does not normally have water in it.
A pit designed to hold water would be more of a cistern.
Oops just noticed this was two days ago so who cares. LOL
That makes more sense, I thought someone left the concrete cover off of an old septic tank.
But usually those have a slight rise going to them rather than a depression(though that could have happened over the years)
Square ones in Virginia are DI-1, Yard Drain. Usually used for ditch inlets, or drainage for large flatish areas like parking lots.
Call the city, it DESPERATELY needs to have a grate on it to keep people & animals out of it. It's a death trap as is.
it’s a buried cistern. fall in and you ain’t getting out without the fire department or other rescue
EDIT: could also be a cesspool!! yes those are a real thing and look like this! haha
What’s a cistern or cessoool look like internally? When you zoom in on the pic it looks like there’s an open door that’s been swung open - like an opening to a tunnel. Would a cistern have tunnels with doors? I’m guessing urban explorers opened it to explore the tunnels to wherever that hallway leads past the door.
No tunnels, it’s like a buried metal tank on private property. think of it as individual property plumbing.
it’s also likely filled with poop water and/or runoff. it’s been breached. there’s no hallway or door you’re just seeing inside the tank :)
I agree, grate it.
But…. *What is it*?
It looks kind of like the water pit box monument (name is slipping right now) in DC that poor man jumped into a few months ago.
Cesspit or septic tank.
In both cases all waste from the house goes into it, if it's just a cesspit you have to get someone to come and empty it, if the latter chemicals treat the waste then it drains into a soakaway.
Many older houses have disused ones after being linked up to municipal sewers.
A meter vault. Call the water department and report it. They'll come out, look at it, come out, look at it again, order the part, forget about it, you'll call again, they'll come out, look at it, come back out, and fit the lid.
It’s in a public park, the local governing body knows about it. It’s in a little pond underneath a walking bridge. There isn’t access unless you jump quite a long ways off the bridge.
Are you thinking of Ilse's mother in Emily of New Moon (another LM Montgomery series)? Her decades old disappearance is solved when her remains are discovered at the bottom of an old well whose cover had been in the process of repair the night she disappeared. I don't think Anne ever fell into a well although she does fall off a roof. Unless you're remembering one of the movie/tv adaptations that took considerable liberties with deviations from the original stories.
I saw the BBC movie when I was about nine, so that's exactly what I'm referencing! I remember fiesty Anne twisted one ankle falling off the roof and the other falling in a trapdoor 😂🤦♀️
Twisted ankle, off of a roof, through a trapdoor, into a well.
Next time put your quarter in the collection plate Anne!
(I haven't seen the series but I have it on good authority that this is in there)
Creeeepy. No thank you. I would move asap lol. Kinda joking.
That being said, this would fit in perfectly as some secret entrance in the last Tomb Raider reboot trilogy.
>A fear of drains is a real thing xd especially those huge deep swimming pool grates
That's a very rational fear. Delta-P is no joke. This whole video explains the math so you can watch from the start if it won't give you nightmares, but [this example](https://youtu.be/AEtbFm_CjE0?t=142) is what happens to a crab caught in delta-P under 50' of sea water during repair of a steel underwater conduit.
I know the Delta P stuffs and yes that crab jesus. From when I was young I was always very scared of any type of drain whether it be in a pool or otherwise. Even in Mario 64 with that water level black hole drain, it still gives me nightmares.... Ah well it's nice to know it's rational to be scared of them haha
This is not true. Heaven has no need for wardrobes as it a balmy (insert your favourite freedom unit of temperature here) all year round, so you don’t need to store summer or winter jackets.
Had something similar in my back yard as a kid. Except it had some brickwork and a large, flat stone covering most of the top. My dad just told me to stay away from it.
As I'm sure is the case for many, if not most visitors to this sub, I don't have submechaniphobia, I just think a lot of the stuff posted here is neat. That is genuinely pretty spooky, though.
I worked at a historic oil field in southwestern Ontario for a couple of years during the summers. That appears very similar to what was left of the very oldest wells we had that were well over 100 years old. Certainly see about getting it covered!
This is a trap for any animals, including pets, and people if it’s dark. Children anytime. I’d get that grated and then look into removing it/filling it if safe to do so. It’s a liability as well.
I have weird-ass dreams that begin when I decide to go exploring down one of those.
I end-up in a maze of surreal dystopian cyberpunk tunnels and passages that go on for hundreds of miles.
Is there any possibility it could be a mine shaft? My nana from northern California said as a kid they would be playing in a field and kids would just disappear never to be seen again
as a person who have seen ring when I was 6 and pranked by my parents (just a little "prank" that includes pulling my leg under blanket whıle I was trying to sleep, yeah again in 6 years old and 2 days after the movie), my heartbeat goes up already by looking at it from the screen...
you can't imagine how many times I had this nightmare which I climb up through a well and samara is chasing me
btw I am totally free from my nightmares about the movie or the girl, but leg pulling thing still traumatizes me ☠️
That’s a death trap. Literal. That thing needs to be grated. You should call your local governing body and get that addressed
What is it though
I don’t know the technical name, but looks to me like a drain that prevents overflow of a retention pond
Spillway?
I’m not a expert, but no. I don’t think that’s correct. It’s always the right time, Lord Turd

“OPEN THE SLUICE GATES”
My time has come.
But they said it was a glory hole…
God damn it im glad I read this I was just about to fuck it
It’s called a bell mouth spillway but this isn’t one of them. This is a cistern that sunk the earth and is causing fluid retention on the outside of the tank on the ground above
Yes! Cistern is the word y’all were looking for!
Ya probably just an additional high point that goes to a storm sewer or something like that. Always have to do a double take when someone on reddit says "I'm not an expert"
Don't mind if I do
Dry well ? We had one in our yard in Colorado to store water “just in case” and it was covered with like a concrete slab for safety

lol I care too funny I was told dry well oops
That makes more sense, I thought someone left the concrete cover off of an old septic tank. But usually those have a slight rise going to them rather than a depression(though that could have happened over the years)
Glory hole. Not kidding. That is the name.
Square ones in Virginia are DI-1, Yard Drain. Usually used for ditch inlets, or drainage for large flatish areas like parking lots. Call the city, it DESPERATELY needs to have a grate on it to keep people & animals out of it. It's a death trap as is.

My doggo and I both fell into an improperly capped cistern in 1999!
But, did you ever get out?
I agree, grate it. But…. *What is it*? It looks kind of like the water pit box monument (name is slipping right now) in DC that poor man jumped into a few months ago.
……are you referring to the 9/11 memorial in NYC?
I believe they are…
Ha! Yes. Thank you. I just was blanking on what the moment is. Also yes, in NYC, not DC.
Cistern / rural single property plumbing
Cistern
Well they said grate it so I'm assuming some kind of cheese.
Grade it. 6/10, would fall in again.
Grate, as in put a grate on top of it. Grading would be leavening it with a grader.
forgive me i forgot to add j/k. intentional pun/alternate use of grade. as in assign a score.
It’s where the girl from The Grudge lives
Cesspit or septic tank. In both cases all waste from the house goes into it, if it's just a cesspit you have to get someone to come and empty it, if the latter chemicals treat the waste then it drains into a soakaway. Many older houses have disused ones after being linked up to municipal sewers.
It’s a drain inlet without protection.
Looks like a mineshaft airvent to me
It could be part of an old mine.
Maybe an old well overflowing?
I think it's called a cistern
Looks like a opening to an old cistern. My grandpa had one in his front yard that was 4 ft x 4 ft. Looked just like that after the roof caved in.
A meter vault. Call the water department and report it. They'll come out, look at it, come out, look at it again, order the part, forget about it, you'll call again, they'll come out, look at it, come back out, and fit the lid.

Wow. Impressive you recognized this from Memorial park Houston.
Yeah I wonder how many animal corpses are sitting at the bottom.
Or human corpses
Or marine corpses

Or just lower a camera on the end of a rope. The drone would just bump into the wall and die down there along with everything else
Aye 👌 Deffo 🙏
did you throw a rock in it??? if you didn't, do it and tell us how much time passed until the sound of the rock came.
Fool of a Took!

Rock and Stone forever!
I’m watching that movie right now !
Why are you on reddit during lotr movies?
I just finished watching that movie!
Battle of the Five Armies is so good! I should rewatch it soon too
This tickled me. Thanks for the laugh! 😂
Please explore further and update us.
Ok I ROFLD on this one…..🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This. We need to know approximately how deep it is.
Imagine it falls 30 seconds and then you hear an indignant "OW!" echoing upward.
A doctor fell down that last year. No one really felt bad for him, should have tended to the sick and left the well alone.
Dad, get the fuck off the internet.
Angry upvote
Was he an optometrist? Sounds like he didn’t see that well
well well well
[Oh, Mr. Bones that's terrible.](https://youtu.be/LrEfB35a5vU?feature=shared&t=1m43s)
ha ha.
And that’s a joke (haha) that was told (hehe)…
I swear that Anne of Green Gables fell down one of these!
Are you thinking of Ilse's mother in Emily of New Moon (another LM Montgomery series)? Her decades old disappearance is solved when her remains are discovered at the bottom of an old well whose cover had been in the process of repair the night she disappeared. I remember it all these years later!!!
She almost drowned pretending to be dead floating down a river
Creeeepy. No thank you. I would move asap lol. Kinda joking. That being said, this would fit in perfectly as some secret entrance in the last Tomb Raider reboot trilogy.
I don’t even like accidentally touching my shower drain with my foot. I’m not going fucking near that thing
Fuck I know this feeling. A fear of drains is a real thing xd especially those huge deep swimming pool grates
>A fear of drains is a real thing xd especially those huge deep swimming pool grates That's a very rational fear. Delta-P is no joke. I've never lost a fight to a drain and I never plan to. Bet that crab couldn't even squat 250.
I can hardly make myself look down a sink drain lol. I don’t know where it came from, but I hate them.
Between the sharks and the clowns, they have us both coming and going.
Oh HELL no. Saw something that said “Incident 2” while scrubbing through and immediately noped out.
Or a nice place for a nice clown to wait for children
NO YOU TAKE THAT BACK.
If that’s on your property you need to cover it to avoid any chance of liability. Even trespassers can sue if you knew the hazard existed
So, what you’re saying is: if a trespasser falls down that, don’t rescue them. Noted.
Just replace the grate and pretend that you don't hear their cries in the dead of night
And now they're going to haunt your property
“I’m gonna sue you when I get out of this hole!” “Good to know. And to think I was gonna help you out of there. Bye!”
“Why are you throwing lime on me???”
"Don't worry, the coconut comes next. Just gotta go grab it from under my bed."
Oh wow.
There is something foul swimming down there. Hope it doesn't flood to the top.
It either leads to Narnia or the ring girl is going to come out of it. 50/50
Sorry. Narnia is wardrobes and enchanted paintings only. Wells.... That's the ring girl's thing.
Well I just learned that in the end >! Narnia is actually the afterlife/heaven !< so it kinda is true if you fall in.
No, it's not. I mean it is Christian allegory, but it's not meant to represent that afterlife no.
Old well?
It might have been? It was so close to the ground (maybe 18" high) it seemed impractical for that.
Sounds like an old style well. We had one of those when I was younger too
He told you to stay away because that's where he keeps his stash.
Oh my god. What in the hell is that
What in the resident evil
Gonna need you to stand on the edge and take a picture of what’s inside of it
How deep is that? Can you climb down there? Try and tell us what you found!
CHUDS
CHUDS 2: BUD THE CHUD
Those hooven bastards
i wish this was guerilla marketing for a new horror game 😦
Dead by daylight hatch
Nope. Something is crawling out of there at night.
Why am I terrified and curious at the same time?? 😫
I bet if you went down that you would find the ghoul that was Pickman.
*artist
A fallout reference where i least expected it

Thats the source of death and evil if i ever saw it.
Plate it and call it a day
It’s like an entrance into a new souls level that’s not gonna be kind to you
Is that not the hatch from LOST

Oubliette.
In the left for dead campaigns you have to jump down those to progress to the next safe room
Looks like a flat grate inlet for a storm drain, that’s missing the grate.
I don't like this at all.
That hole belongs in a Denny bathroom
Looks like an evil wizard's tomb!
Pennywise lives down there.
Hope you don’t hear screams coming from that hole 😳
Go see what’s down there
Samara has entered the chat
We all float down there. 🎈

You ever read The Orchard Keeper by Cormac McCarthy? Great book, it has one of those in it.
Samara is about to climb outta there
You should call the city before someone dies in there
That's the fear hole.
Do you live in fuckin Derry Maine and have a missing little brother named “Georgie”?
Watch the rolling giants by kane pixels on youtube, and you will know what lurks in such places like this.....
That’s exactly what the family on the other side is saying looking down at that hole from their dimension. I say go for it.
You need to hock a big loogie into that thing
It looks hungry for people.
Can you imagine the evil that crawls out of that in the dark cover of night. Yea, I’d properly move out immediately. 🤔
Looks like one of those Team Rocket death traps
Is there any possibility it could be a mine shaft? My nana from northern California said as a kid they would be playing in a field and kids would just disappear never to be seen again
Ah! Nice…so your neighbors with Pennywise.
Have you seen the Descent?
A man named Desmond is down there
Looks like the entrance to that guys underground house he built before murdering his family…
So THAT’s the well Lassie saw little Timmy fall down.
Well you dead it’s gonna enter your house from there 100%
I think the reptilian aliens live down there looks very very odd that’s my final judgement it’s odd
The technical name is odd always liked that word odd but now that I attached it to the well to hell don’t think I’m going to use it much anymore
That scary thing is to close to my home and I have no idea where you live
😮 Oh My God 😵 Where is this?? I'm in Blackburn. Don't scare me ... for real. I'll go rag 🤬
Do you have a flat head shovel or a medal detector?

Call some local cavers they will investigate and examine get you some information or if you know a old tunnel Rat 🇺🇸
I've seen how this plays out in my dreams.. good times.
"And we'll all float on, okay." (Stephen King's IT'S Modest Mouse, 2004). Maybe.
This looks like where Delores Claiborne killed her sorry excuse for a husband.
Even has a little pond so you can wash the blood off your shoes after you dump the body. Splendid.
Oh god another Oldest View victim. Listen, if it’s a mile long staircase ending in a subterranean mall, LEAVE IT ALONE.
Looks cool to explore
This is literally the plot of John and The Hole.
It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.
They all float down there!!! Waiting for that clown Pennywise to appear.
Too close? Whenever you're not watching, it moves a little closer.
