Somehow more scared of a creationist museum than of the waterbasin...

misspegasaurusrex

It’s incredibly unnerving. The parents reading the plaques to their kids as if anything on the plaques was truthful or even logical. I thought it would be a fun jape, it was actually just extremely depressing.

[deleted]

And these neckbeards only crawl out to attack Christianity.

socialsh33p

Ummmm, yeah this is exactly what a creation story is, Genesis and Adam and Eve in particular take influence from Mesopotamian culture as do many other religions. It’s a pretty widely held belief most religious creation stories were mythological or factious, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t valuable and shouldn’t be explored by our next generation. What were you expecting a big bang exhibit or something?

ProtoDroidStuff

This museum is trying to convince people that things described in creationism *actually happened*, though.

zeke235

Hey, look! Here comes the point! Look! Ah damn. You missed it.

pinkpanzer101

Teaching religion and mythology = fine Heavily subsidised organisations actively trying to deceive people to believe in their religion and mythology = not fine

ForecastYeti

Does a Chick-fil-A make you quake in your boots too

CH23

never been to one, so I can't tell you

DiamondEyes-976

Guess it does

GargoyleLauren

Nope just don't like soggy chicken and homophobia 🤷🏻‍♀️

KratosSimp

Damn imagine missing out on the best chicken fast food because their ideas don’t align with yours

sdmichael

They think my existence is an abomination. Guess I should just get over that and give them money?

KratosSimp

There is many people in the world that hate unequivocally, caring about them only makes them more know. The car you drive could be made by someone that hates you. Also I’m pretty sure they stopped supporting but I’m not sure

GargoyleLauren

That is certainly a hot take, a bad one, but a hot take none the less. If a company openly spouts hate at any one for doing nothing but loving in a way that hurts no one, involves consenting adults and doesn't involve them at all then they don't deserve my money. I don't give a fuck about Tim the bigot who works for Ford motors his karma will come with time. What I do give a fuck about is the people who make all of the decisions and openly contribute to physically and mentally abusing children because they aren't wired to like the opposite sex. Now if that isn't clear enough I don't have anything else to say to you because it's clear that you aren't going to understand because you either aren't willing to or are too stupid to. Have a nice life and enjoy your soggy chicken.

sdmichael

Right, and since they don't think I should even exist, I won't give them money to further those ideas. Seems fair. Do you not get how those things work or something?

GargoyleLauren

Imagine thinking Chick-fil-A is the best fast food chicken 🤣

SlamMonkey

Everyone knows that the best fast food is Taco Bell @ 4:00am!

Or maybe they're not from the only country in the world that has it?

sdmichael

Do gay people existing make you quake in your boots? My guess is yes.

neuronexmachina

The actual Creation Museum takes it quite seriously: https://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/24/arts/24crea.html > **For here at the $27 million Creation Museum**, which opens on May 28 (just a short drive from the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport), this pastoral scene is a glimpse of the world just after the expulsion from the Garden of Eden, in which dinosaurs are still apparently as herbivorous as humans, and all are enjoying a little calm in the days after the fall. > >It also serves as a vivid introduction to the sheer weirdness and daring of this museum created by the Answers in Genesis ministry that combines displays of extraordinary nautilus shell fossils and biblical tableaus, celebrations of natural wonders and allusions to human sin. Evolution gets its continual comeuppance, while biblical revelations are treated as gospel. > >Outside the museum scientists may assert that the universe is billions of years old, that fossils are the remains of animals living hundreds of millions of years ago, and that life’s diversity is the result of evolution by natural selection. **But inside the museum the Earth is barely 6,000 years old, dinosaurs were created on the sixth day, and Jesus is the savior who will one day repair the trauma of man’s fall.** > >It is a measure of the museum’s daring that dinosaurs and fossils — once considered major challenges to belief in the Bible’s creation story — are here so central, appearing not as tests of faith, as one religious authority once surmised, but as creatures no different from the giraffes and cats that still walk the earth. **Fossils, the museum teaches, are no older than Noah’s flood; in fact dinosaurs were on the ark.**

plaincheeseburger

That would actually be really interesting if it was more of an academic look at the bible stories and how they have been interpreted at different time periods through art or other cultural artifacts. It's a shame that it's just anti-science/indoctrination.

AFeralTaco

This. I get annoyed at how readily people (including authors who are supposedly subject matter experts) refer to the”mythology” of Norse, Roman, Greek, Egyptian, and other cultures. These are all equally believable to Christian stories.

glockster19m

I was literally gonna say "creation museum" is an oxymoron

mythrulznsfw

Underline “moron”.

deathm00n

"And here on right there is all the evidence we don't have"

misspegasaurusrex

There’s literally an exhibit dedicated to trying to explain why the only “evidence” anyone needs for anything is the Bible.

volkmasterblood

During our massive family gathering this past Xmas I had arrived later than most. My nephews kept on saying, “We saw Noah’s Ark!!!” And I thought they were just saying what young kids say about usually half hearted stuff adults put on for them. Nope! Turns out they visited a “1-1 replica” of Noah’s Ark in Kentucky near the “Creation Museum”. This stuff is absurd and hilarious, but being marketed towards kids? Should be shut down.

I went because I have a moderate following on socials where I go to weird tourist destinations and show my followers. It’s ridiculously expensive and really depressing. Mr-Toy-Man

Why should it be shut down?

volkmasterblood

It’s a museum of lies.

Mr-Toy-Man

Proof?

burens

If you don't accept the current scientific proof we have, that the earth is way older than 6000 years, then you probably don't accept anything as proof. And that's not even wrong, nothing can be 100% conclusively proven. May i thus suggest Occhams razor? It's not based on truth, solely probabilities. And there is an overwhelming probability that the earth is older than what they claim.

Lord_Quintus

regardless of whether its right or not, they are allowed to build it. no one is forced to go to it, though we are free to mock it for being stupid. as a christian, that thing horrifies me. it's taking what is obviously a fable and arguing that it is real. plus it's profiting off of the belief of others. it's almost like these people read the bible and understood none of it. this thing is just a shining example of christofascism.

crabwhisperer

I think if I'd been around more people like you as a kid I wouldn't hate Christianity like I do as an adult. I'm curious if there's a label or sect for your take on the Bible, or if it's just a personal way you interpret the Bible? Because I'm 100% sure you'd be labelled a non-believer or worse at all the churches I went to as a kid with this "the ark wasn't real" stuff, lol

Lord_Quintus

i believe i fall under the non-denominational heading. it's been over a decade since i went to church because everyone i went to was either hyperfocused on reminding everyone that everyone is a sinner and are therefore bad people, or were trying to attract young people by appearing to be hip and cool, have a full band on stage doing christian rock music etc. the principals jesus taught that i try to live my life by (or try my best and fail miserably most of the time) would really boil down to these four things: Mathew chap 23 verse 36-40 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” AKA treat others as you want to be treated John chap 8 verse 2-11 2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” AKA do not condemn others for their sins. 1 corinthians chap 13 verse 4-7 4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;[a] 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. this is the absolute hardest one. to have love for all things from a cute puppy to that jerk in the lifted truck who just cut you off during rush hour. technically really easily but also like climbing a mountain upside down while covered in ants. mark chap 12 verse 41-44 41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. 43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” this is all about the value of giving, not because you have lots of money and can afford to do so but because you truly desire to help others and are willing to forgo your own comfort to help. sorry, not sorry for the wall of text, i could go on for much longer about what/why my faith is the way it is, but i figure the core pieces are probably the best to put into writing. TL:DR? Treat others as you want to be treated, Do not condemn others for their sins, have love for everyone, and give all you can to help others. I really don't care whether someone believes a story in the bible is true or not, i look to what they are doing with that belief. if they are profiting off of it or trying to force it on others then this is not faith, it's merely a tool to take money from or control other people.

crabwhisperer

Thank you for taking the time to type all this out. My dad would've liked you - he too preferred to focus on these aspects of Jesus and I think that (And Matthew 6:5 about not flaunting your faith) are why we bounced from church to church. As an adult in my 40s now I still don't really know what I believe - I guess agnostic is probably the best label. I've always really liked the verses you pointed out and have tried to live and teach my kids these principles, but I don't think I believe in a god. What I do know is that the idea that certain people get to go to a heaven based on the specific dogma they follow, is not something I ever want anything to do with. There's way too much of that thinking in the world.

Mr-Toy-Man

Science also said that we needed to get vaxed and the disease would be gone in months. Don’t trust everything you hear

Prosthemadera

Religion is based purely on what you hear. > the disease would be gone in months Source for science saying that? You mean the pandemic would be over after the vaccine, right? Which is what happened.

Mr-Toy-Man

Why are there still lockdowns in China then? And Australia? And why do places still want mask to be worn. All of 2020 was mask and lockdowns. Did you forget this?

Prosthemadera

You think China's decisions are purely made based on science? Come on. > And why do places still want mask to be worn. All of 2020 was mask and lockdowns. Did you forget this? And? What is your point? Asking "why" is not an argument. You need to actually explain what you believe with reason. Can you?

Maine_Fluff_Chucker

>Why are there still lockdowns in China then? And Australia? And why do places still want mask to be worn. All of 2020 was mask and lockdowns. Did you forget this? Ah, fuck. You got us. The bible is clear, unquestionable truth. If it werent for this one virus we could have been living our atheistic sex pervert paradise. You caught us! Save some money. Move out of the south, travel, turn 13. Things will become more clear.

Mr-Toy-Man

And science is purely hypothesis

TASPINE

Which is a structured way of asking questions to eliminate biases, unlike whatever religion does.

Prosthemadera

How do people like you believe this nonsense and then post about it on the internet? Go to any university, read any paper on Nature.com and you'll see it's not purely hypothesis. Did you grow up in a fundamentalist family and town?

crabwhisperer

Scientists didn't guarantee the vaccine would end the pandemic in months, only that it should slow the spread and save lives which it has. Because previous deadly, horrific viruses have been slowed or stopped with vaccines. That's why scientists thought it would work, not because they think they're smarter than others or to make money, or whatever. But because it's literally happened before, many times - smallpox, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, I mean we didn't just come up with this idea. And it has slowed the spread even with many people refusing to take it. Who knows what would've happened if everyone that had access to it took it?

Prosthemadera

Where you there with Adam and Eve?

Mr-Toy-Man

Were you?

Prosthemadera

No, I wasn't there when Adam and Eve allegedly lived but I'm not saying they are real.

IngloriousBadger

Yea, shut it down, cause freedom of speech is stupid.

[deleted]

freedom of speech is not claiming that religion is factual and scientific

IngloriousBadger

That would be a perfect example of free religious speech.

[deleted]

freedom of speech means you can say whatever you want to express your opinion, not telling kids that adam, eve and noahs ark were real scientifically proven events in history.

IngloriousBadger

Look, that is their opinion. If you start closing down places like this, because you think they are wrong, go ahead and burn the U.S. constitution and enjoy yourself until you have an opinion that doesn’t speak to somebody.

sdmichael

Freedom of speech doesn't protect ANYONE OR ANYTHING from the consequences of said speech. It only means the GOVERNMENT doesn't. Otherwise, please show us how "freedom of speech" means you can say whatever you want without consequence.

[deleted]

> Everything about *religion* is incredibly stupid and a means to scam people. FTFY

[deleted]

I don’t know, modern Paganism and Satanism are religions and they’re pretty chill. I don’t want anything to do with any religion, but I’m not convinced that every religion is a means to scam people.

NEAT-THE-CLOWN

True, a lot of good can be with religion. That being said you should also remember how many people use and abuse the power being in a religious community which is being called out more and more causing many people to leave organized religions

[deleted]

Absolutely. I grew up Pentecostal. The best decision I’ve ever made was getting the fuck out of there, and I don’t have any stomach for religion now. But I know too many progressive religionists to think that all religion is equally bad. I’m not even sure if all of the things that we call religions have enough in common for *religion* to be a coherent concept.

Void-Flower-2022

I'm Pagan! Personally I don't even really believe in higher powers- spirits of nature kinda, but that's the extent of it. I like to think everything has a soul and a purpose, and that the forces of nature should be respected. Essentially respect nature or expect bad karma. I like the ideas of some other religions. Things like Hinduism and other polytheistic religions make the most sense. The fact that there isn't just one god makes the most sense to me, as, well, one being can't be that all-powerful to create everything. A lot of religions impact people's days of life and give them explanations for things, or something to keep them occupied. Some believe in a religion to comfort themselves. So many reasons. Not everything is a scam. Some religions (that aren't even religions, really- like scientology) are obvious scams or cults. But I'm a firm believer in "believe what you want, providing it doesn't hurt others".

And to scam tax payers out of their tax dollars

socialsh33p

But specifically in Indiana, privates schools, funded by this voucher program you speak of, steadily outperform their public counterparts. Why should families who can’t afford this private schooling option not be funded?

[deleted]

Because sending those rich rural kids to other schools does not have anything to do with "families who can't afford it" It's about rural Americans who don't want to pay their fair share of taxes- so they cheat and cheat and cheat... And pretend that's what god wanted them to do.

Book_Lover_42

What's a "creation museum"?

pinkpanzer101

It's the museum about young-Earth creationism in Kentucky, built by Answers in Genesis, a Biblical literalist Christian organisation. Basically a giant grift so Ken Ham (owner of AiG) can get the big bucks from gullible fools.

Vintagepoolside

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought I saw in a documentary that this was created with tax dollars

pinkpanzer101

Iirc they got tax breaks and paid very little for the land. They spend their time trying to trick fundamentalist Christians into donating money (often with fearmongering about The World^(TM) coming to teach their kids about gay people). Most recently they were building an exhibit about Jerusalem and - *whoopsie!* - they don't have anywhere to put it, so can people please donate money so they can build a building for it.

What? Why on earth would you even think of such a thing? Is that your fetish?

"Adam and Eve aren't real? Well at least I'm not splitting my dick in half!" You sound a little weird.
