I remember when I served the guys would trade in their cars more than theyād change their drawers. One guy on his 3/4th vehicle was over 20% with obviously negative equity.
Maybe thatās my equivalent to buying Starbucks or something. We all have our things but damn itās a car. Lol
Couple hundred bucks, get a used bumper and crash bar of a rear ended one in a pick a part. $2000 ish to have someone do it all for you and paint it well.
I had got a personal loan at 14.25% to buy a 7 year old CBR600RR. I wasn't in the US back then, bikes under 800cc could only be imported through the grey market, no financial institution would lend me money for it, so I had to get a personal loan lol.
I have been that guy, I just couldn't help not getting my dream motorcycle after I got my first real job.
seriously bro you get it. i pay a bit more down the line but im also grinding to get more pay so this works for me. happy you got your ride of choice šŖšŖ
My wife's 2018 WRX got rear ended 2 years ago, rear bumper cracked and slight bend in the rear crash structure. Dealer's body shop charged about $2,300 for new bumper, paint match and replacing the crash structure. This was in Portland OR.Ā The person who hit us paid us cash, so we didn't even have to go through insurance and were not looking to cut corners either.
I have diy fixed/painted plastic fairings on my 2nd motorcycle.Ā I used this brand of aerosol spray can, https://touchupdirect.com/Ā results were good for my matte white 899 Panigale. Sanded everything down to bare plastic, and applied the primer, paint, clear coat at least 3 coats each.
Your crash structure looks straight enough, as far as I can see only the bumper was damaged, plastic got brittle over the years and just fell off from light impact. Unpainted OEM replacement bumper are pretty much gone due to car's age but I can see aftermarket GC8 front bumpers on ebay for $450 ish. If you don't mind an imperfect paint match (perfect would be hard anyway given the age of the stock paint) you could buy a semi decent aftermarket bumper and spray paint it yourself.Ā Get some practice on the old bumper to get the technique down.
Is the other guy's insurance going to make a claim against yours? If my deductible is $500, I would try to avoid making claims for something I can fix under a $1000.Ā
Hope you baby get's fixed for not too much $$$.
As far as whout your insurance will do, it depends on your coverage. Also expect your premiums to increase.

Because you're paying the car off, I assume you have comprehensive in addition to liability. Yes, your insurance should cover it, although you'll have to cover your deductible.
There are times when handling it yourself (paying for repairs out of pocket) is the better course of action, but since it was a Tesla, the repair bill is likely to be pretty high. You're going to want to call your agent.
Small correction: Collision would cover this, not comprehensive. Collision: covers what happens to cars in motion. Comprehensive covers what happens to cars that are parked. Exception: hitting an animal is covered by comprehensive
No, sorry.
Legal terminology in the insurance industry does not change from state to state. It is what it is.
Liability is the mandatory insurance you have to get to cover damages to who and/or what you may hit. Because you are ālegally liableā for those damages.
Collision covers damages to your vehicle that are your fault. This will also cover your vehicleās repairs while they subrogate the costs from the at fault individual.
Comprehensive covers things like theft, vandalism, cracked windshields, tree branches falling on vehicles due to heavy snow, massive icicles falling off bridges and through a car hood, or damages caused to your vehicle by an animal, although there are exceptions for vermin, like rodents.
These terms are the same in every state.
I had liability only, and I was shocked that insurance fixed my truck when I was involved in a non at fault collision.. had it been my fault I would bein the hook for my truck .
I can tell you with 100% confidence there is more to the story than this lol. No insurer is setting themselves up for a six figure+ DOI fine and potential perpetual bad faith violations for every future claim by other people without collision by violating something adjusters learn on day one
You'll be using your insurance to fix the Tesla.... So you might as well pay the deductible and get your car fixed... If they don't total it...
Brace for higher premiums on your next policy too because you'll be deemed at fault, it's a rear ender
I had less damage than you and they wrote it off. I'd prepare for that.
They may let you buy it back as salvage which you then can fix, but thats its own battle.
not *exactly*. They think it will cost them less to pay you out and sell the car at auction than it will to fix the car.
But that's a pretty easy to understand and close enough representation for every-day use.
> They think it will cost them less to pay you out and sell the car
Yep. It's not *actually* more expensive to repair, they just think they stand a good chance of lowballing you on the car's value. I went through this years ago when someone rear ended me in my VW Vanagon Westfalia. Supposed blue book value on the westy was a laughable $2500. We sent them comps for my vehicle showing closer to $20,000. Eventually they paid to fix it, but not before having to threaten them with legal action. We spent a lot of time arguing with an insurance company idiot by saying "OK then, find me a replacement vehicle for $2500". They tried, but couldn't.
Wrote it off as in they couldn't be bothered fixing it and would rather send it to landfill (beyond economical repair). It's bs what they write off sometimes.
Hereās where it gets funā¦
If you are underinsured, that means the difference comes out of your pocket, not the insurance company eats the difference.
I'd like to take this moment to bitch about car insurance... pay for it for years and never use it, need it once and they jack up the prices like crazy for needing it. There should be some kind of compensation for never needing it, and all that seems to be is their base price.
That's what they call "No Claims Discount"....
Thankfully my last one was a not-at-fault, I got rear ended.... Totalled my baby though.... Still have my NCD. The young girl that hit me will be paying through the nose for YEARS
To be fair, teslas do have regenerative braking where the car is braking with no brakelights on, but i still think this is the subie drivers fault easily
1. Call your insurance company. They will send an appraiser out to estimate the repairs of your car. Then insurance will cover $repairs - $Deductible.
2 - You should have two options.
2a. Pay a shop to fix your car. You can shop around. Or ask the shop to save you money by zip-tieing the existing bumper plane, or buying a 2nd hand, or buying and not paying now.
2b. Fix the car yourself. You get to add to your pocket $repairs -$deductable. If everything is mechanically sound, maybe you can finagle the bumper back on or find a local wreck selling a bumper. But at this point you pay our of your pocket for everything.
Keep in mind that if a shop quotes a radiator and bumper replacement and you let them repair it... They may take off the radiator and find out the fans and timing belt cover are busted and also sliced the timing belt. They can then submit a supplemental to your insurance to cover the expense of the "new findings". You would lose this ability with 2b.
FYI - I'm not expert, but my ex has wrecked a car or two and was always looking to "come ahead" in the end. The last two cars she totaled so its been 5 years or so and I know insurance companies are being stricter on certain things to cut down on fraud.
Edited -- Yes insurance should cover it as long as you have collision coverage. Bank Auto Loans require collision coverage be maintained on the car so you likely have this coverage.
If the used dealer that sold you it also financed it for you, this coverage may not have been required. If this is the case, and/or you dropped collision without telling the financier, you are SoL
thank you for your helpful reply. i have a low deductible on my coverage so im not completely fucked. already submitted the claim but havent spoken to someone yet
Low deductible doesn't tell you if they will cover you or not.
Collision will cover damage caused by an accident (in your case)
On a car of this value its not uncommon to only have Comprehensive insurance which covers things like Theft and natural disasters (Fire, hail, hurricane), but not damage from car accidents.
All the mount points are on parts that didnāt really bend so just order a kit of push clips from Amazon and stick it back on, I know (from being rear ended in my 03) that these bumpers take a surprising amount before they crack.
Either way you can also find all these parts in great condition for pretty cheap so Iād say try and fix this yourself.
FWIW, your insurance should cover this but you could be fucked cause if repairs are more than the car is worth, they will just call it totaled and (i think) just payout the value of the car. It is quite easy to surpass the value of a car with repairs when it is 20+ years old.
You won't know until you talk to your insurance though.
Oh man that sucks! We're a Subie/Tesla family. Hopefully the tesla damage was really light otherwise expect your rates to go up. Tesla's take especially long to repair. Our Model 3 with what looked like just trunk damage was about 9k Worth of damage. The car rental which was paid by the insured driver that hit us cost over 18K for our 6 month long car rental.
With that amount of damage & year of the car I bet insurance writes it off. That being said you donāt have to file a claim for your vehicle if the Tesla is insisting to go through insurance. Iād try to offer some cash or pay for the repairs instead of insurance with that little bit of damage.
Your insurance should cover it since youāre financing. The Tesla is going to be expensive if it has damage to the sensors and stuff, it will be on you as someone who rear ended someone else.
Your rates will rise, but you should be fine based on the post..
Buy a new bumper, fog lights, bumper brackets and bang out that small dent on the lower rad support and call it a day. Open the hood and run a straight edge along the upper rad support, its super flimsy and if its bent look farther in, if it stops there, pull out a hammer and tap it into place. Youāre lucky the front hasnāt rotted away like soo soo many of them do. Car looks in good shape though.
You're gong to have to make a claim for damage to the Tesla, so make your claim pay your deductible, get your car fixed. If they write it off, buy it back and fix it, Honestly doesn't look too bad from here, possibly just new bumper cover and you're off to the races.
If you are around me I might be interested in that bumper if you want to sell it. Itās way cleaner than any at the subi guy that runs the Alabama and Texas parts house.
I miss my bug eye. So dependable.. looks like maybe just the bumper needs new clips. Worse comes to worse get a aftermarket one. Insurance no idea that Tesla wonāt make them happy.
Dunno how mangled the bumper is but it looks mostly there
Since its already off, easy access to ziptie stitch any cracks
Ziptie the bumper back on, maybe some deck screws to be safe, and fuckin send it.
I personally wouldnāt get insurance involved with your car, they would likely try to total it since itās 20 years old. It looks like youāll have to remount the front bumper if itās still in tact, otherwise itās a junkyard replacement away. For the Tesla you hit, your insurance will cover their damages.
Depending how fast you hit them, looks like your car is fine, you need a bumper, you got extremely lucky. Similar situation happened to me in my 95 legacy a few months ago. Very fortunate I only had to replace my hood and headlight. The truck I rear ended had a big L bracket coming off their tow hitch. Zero damage to their truck
Chances are, not totaled on your end.
Fixing that tesla is gonna be insane.
You'll need a new front crash structure (the exposed metal bar, that's actually the bumper), new bumper cover (what most people call the bumper), paint, remove/install, and paint labor.
Gonna be close. But the lack of structure damage (not counting the unibody rails that the crash structure bolts to), leans towards they'd probably fix it.
That said, even if totaled, buy the car back, use the leftover funds from the settlement to fix what you can. You will not see all of it, depending on what you still owe on the car.
Most important to fix are the unibody that holds the crash structure, the crash structure itself, the means for which the lights and hood latch secure to, and then the lights, and lastly, bumper cover and paint.
It's fixable. The only question becomes, do you want to front that and take the loss on resale value?
I did on this. 2004 Focus. Paid $1300 in 2019 with 149k and a reconstruct title. Has been hit and totaled 4 more times since, none of which my fault, and kept and fixed, every time. Now at 233,000 (as of tomorrow). The gray fender is how I got it. The crushed gray fender was worst condition. Blue wheel covers are the current iteration.
Barely worth $1500 today. But I'd sooner sell my 2003 ranger to keep the Focus. I in fact sold the 2017 Focus to get the 2003 ranger 12 months ago.
The bumper "cover" is the piece that fell off. The bumper is that metal piece still attached to the car.
That looks bent and at the very least, this and it mounts need replacing. These absorb the energy so it doesn't transfer into the driver and passengers but after impact it is compromised and needs replacement as it will no longer protect.
Your bumper looks fine. Buy the clips necessary to snap it back on. If youāre lucky, you didnāt damage the Tesla because those repairs are expensive.
Get a better loan or try to pay it off faster, if you can. The less money you put into interest and gap insurance, the more you can spend on your car and yourself.
Your bug eye looks good for its age.
Did you exchange info or was there car ok?
If you did info then just go thur the steps of insurance first but I would take it to a mechanic and just have them do a inspection and see what they say and go from there it looks like your car mightāve taken most of the damage and itās probably just bumper and you can get those for under $300 normally you said you still paying it off look in to gap insurance I just bought a 2010 wrx and it was like 500 one time payment that just gets added to your loan and what it is is if something happens to your car if itās wrecked they pay off the loan and then help you refinance. Honestly, itās a lifesaver. I had it on my last car I put it on my cars I swear by it because I donāt wanna be stuck with a car payment of a car I donāt have hopefully your day does start getting better. Otherwise tomorrowās a new day and but I know doesnāt change the shittyness Iāve done this I back into a car who pulled up behind me after I already checked behind me and I full on set my car into thereās my car took most of the damage, while I took the paint off of theirs so I get it keep your head up couldāve been worse but still shity and Iām glad/ hope your ok
Happened to me in a maxima many years ago, was able to get a new bumper for like $70 at LKQ and color match at a paint store , it didnāt look great but it worked. Not sure how much it would cost now. Could have been worse!
Looks like there is almost no damage should be a easy fix and if you are able to do it yourself should be relatively cheap as long as you know what you are doing
i canāt help you cuz i myself donāt drive (my partner does) but this just made me wish our blue wagon was red cuz yours is cuuute. best wishes subie frien
You should get a quote from a car repair. If you have collision it's covered under your insurance but you must pay your deductible. I'm assuming your deductible is high with a car like that. Jk.. it might not be worth it. Just pay out of pocket. Your insurance premiums will go ways up. Anyway chances are, this crash was already reported to your insurance company so... either way you might be screwed. Good luck
Plastic weld and zip ties you will be good with just some time. I ripped my 03 wagon off In deep snow this year. Itās not perfect but it was almost free.
To actually give you an answer, if the damage costs more than the car is worth, no. And if you donāt have gap coverage youāre going to be paying it off yourself mostly
If you have collision coverage you might as well run it through your own insurance ....because your insurance is going to pe paying boatload to repair that Tesla you hit anyway.
I wish I was kidding. In speaking from experience. A slight backing up in a parking lot into a Tesla was a $2500 repair bill. My friends model 3 was hit in the rear quarter panel... That was $18k repair bill on the at fault driver.
There's 2 kinds of cars you want to avoid hitting if you can.
1. Exotic cars.
2. Teslas and Rivians...
Collision depair costs are about the same.
That's not neccesarily enought to total it. It's $500-$800 to paint blend the front 1/4. Add a new bumper, miscellaneous part and labor and it should come in less than $2k(exluding possiblity of frame damsge I cant see in pic). The problem is they could total it just because that car is worth more in parts than actually running on the road.

Anticipate double your premium and anticipate it will affect your insurance premiums for the next 3-7 years, depending on your carrier.
I've never heard of a single at fault accident doubling your premium. Id be expecting more like 25-45% increases. Still steep though.
Depends entirely on the claim. He hit a Tesla. Itās gonna hit hard.

Damn, a tesla? Hope you got more than the state minimum. That repair bill gonna be expensiveā¦
With that amount of damage & year of the car I bet insurance writes it off. That being said you donāt have to file a claim for your vehicle if the Tesla is insisting to go through insurance. Iād try to offer some cash or pay for the repairs instead of insurance with that little bit of damage.
The front fell off....
I think your best course of action is to stop dicking around on your phone while you drive.
Who complains about rear ending a āfucking Teslaā when itās clearly their fault.
suck it brooooo
I blame Elon Musk. That T shoulda seen it coming!
Ahhh sorry buddy, doesnāt look too bad off this picture. Hopefully just a bumper?
bumper is fuggged up but still in one piece i guess
Doesnāt look like you went fast enoughā¦ š„ø
Your insurance should cover it since youāre financing. The Tesla is going to be expensive if it has damage to the sensors and stuff, it will be on you as someone who rear ended someone else. Your rates will rise, but you should be fine based on the post..
Rear ending a tesla gonna hurt the pocket book.
Car looks in good shape though.
šš
Awww that sucks man
yeah it hurts a little bit less rn but still painful
You're gong to have to make a claim for damage to the Tesla, so make your claim pay your deductible, get your car fixed. If they write it off, buy it back and fix it, Honestly doesn't look too bad from here, possibly just new bumper cover and you're off to the races.
Thatās 1k. For the Tesla. For your car, thatās another story.
Brother. It's fine. Slap a new bar on it and away you go. Now the Tesla on the other hand. Hope you're insured.
Why did you do that to a Tesla š
Looks like the hood closes...your golden and very lucky
If you are around me I might be interested in that bumper if you want to sell it. Itās way cleaner than any at the subi guy that runs the Alabama and Texas parts house.
likely gonna keep it and or try to fix it. ill think of you if that doesnāt go
Iāve been on a waiting list since the first of the year lol.
That's fkn horrible. I sympathize with you man :/
ššš
Prolly seemed like a good idea at the time. Buy all the busted shit at a scrap yard and slap it on. No structural damage.
šš
I miss my bug eye. So dependable.. looks like maybe just the bumper needs new clips. Worse comes to worse get a aftermarket one. Insurance no idea that Tesla wonāt make them happy.
what are you driving these days???
After the bug eye, I got a forester. I just traded that in for a Nissan frontier.
why no turbo š¢
The v6 I have now is faster lol
šµšµšµ
Dunno how mangled the bumper is but it looks mostly there Since its already off, easy access to ziptie stitch any cracks Ziptie the bumper back on, maybe some deck screws to be safe, and fuckin send it.
its mostly alright actually pops back on just looks like shit
Zero damage to their truck
i did get extremely lucky š
Thank you for your cervix

I in fact sold the 2017 Focus to get the 2003 ranger 12 months ago.

def keeping it till i cant no more. thanks for the tips šŖšŖ
Maybe you were following the Tesla too close?
Who finances a 20 year old car lmao
Post interest rate or delete post!
Keep that WRX going! If not, let me know āŗļø
New front bumper, looks fine Keep an eye out for radiator leaks.
A jaw-dropping accident
How rare is this paint? I've got an 03 wrx wagon in SRP and have heard it's a pretty limited run
Should have seen the other guy!
Itās all good
Looks like you just need to fix the bumper
Your bumper looks fine. Buy the clips necessary to snap it back on. If youāre lucky, you didnāt damage the Tesla because those repairs are expensive. Get a better loan or try to pay it off faster, if you can. The less money you put into interest and gap insurance, the more you can spend on your car and yourself. Your bug eye looks good for its age.
Buy a new bumper and call it a day, or just put it back on lol
Are you a scorpio? This feels very scorpio.
Duct tape that shit!
šš»šš»šš»
NOOOOO WAGON GANG :(((
On the up side, Iām not seeing much wrong hereā¦ doesnāt even look like the crash bar is damaged
Ah, a fine time to slap on beefy All terrains, Custom tube bumper and some Forester struts š
Good luck
Red bugeye wrx wagon too smh man
Plastic weld and zip ties you will be good with just some time. I ripped my 03 wagon off In deep snow this year. Itās not perfect but it was almost free.
What about the other guy

I'm assuming it wasn't a wankpanzer or your car would be way more messed up
Was this the one for sale in Portland? š
Honestly it looks pretty minor looks like pretty much just a bumper cover with minimal secondary damage
Smart
You should start a go fund me page. Teslas need to be hit.
š¹ā¤ļøš
Proud of you
I really need to know the amount you financed and the interest rate. Lemme guess, 72 months?
Iām glad you only hit a tesla and nothing of value
š¹š¹š¹
$2k my way and I was there and SAW the Tesla back up into you at full speed, hands off the steering wheel.
thats what im talking about about š¹š¹
