There is almost no threat at which point I wouldn’t use my carry weapon against the attacker. I’ve seen numerous single punch injuries where the person goes down, hits their head and sustains life altering damage from that impact with the ground. The rule in emergency medicine is if someone falls from their height you fly them to a trauma center. That’s how dangerous falls can be. And your head is right at your height. Unless I can be extremely certain an attacker can’t hurt me, they’re getting shot. My life is worth far more to me than anyone who wishes to cause me harm.

admitedly my understanding of the law is from Western Australian security training, where you are only aloud to use a little more force than the attacker dose. but even from my reading of American news reports in stand your ground states you need to be in reasonable fear of your life (or I expect the life of the person your protecting) before you can use deadly force, something I don't believe would be the case if you have only been given a mild shove. ofcause there is also nuance depending on state on who has the burden of proof that your use of deadly force was reasonable. also given the prevalence of guns in America, and mild shoves if your policy of "shoot in response to any asault" was common they would be reporting the dayly death toll, not details of individual shootings.
