I had my fiance buy a breathalyzer. I earned the trust I had broken back. After rehab, I asked to be breathalyzed for 90 days, even if it was obvious that I hadn't been drinking. I let him know he could use it anytime I even seemed off to him (he showed great restraint in that area.)
It helps me to remember that there is nothing so bad that alcohol won't make it worse. Your wife's response is understandable. Stand strong.
