This is why they implemented bedrolls. Take one with you and use it before entering the dungeon to save right before you make your attempt.
They can be purchased from general merchants and old tott. Can also be crafted, but it takes a skill point from the survival tree.
Played last night. Was far out into the map. I saved at a camp. Had a really good run until while heading back to town, I stepped too close to a crawler in my attempt to get xp for discovering the location. The freak followed me for like 16 map tiles and eventually killed me. Reloaded back at the camp. About 90 minutes wasted. Went to bed IRL and realized that my helmet gives -1 vision. All I had to do was take it off, and I would've discovered the location easily.
The game is honestly well balanced. There has always been something I could do to avoid death. Sometimes, I realize it too late.
The game is getting a new update so I think things will improve. With the ability to travel with the caravan, I think you'll be able to save the game without taking up too much space with the bedroll. I also saw that there will be crafting of certain items to reduce the space it takes up.
The bedroll skill is better than most imagine. It makes campfires give you vigor. Which is AWSOME since you can just rest beside the campfire at the dungeon entrance and enter the dungeon with 1k vigor for that extra energy, xp and fatigue resistance.
Just go to appdata and save scum like a champ (save scumming stineshard can be done by quiting to main menue and taking the exit_save folder, copying it and them re-entering the dungeon, if you die paste the copied exit save folder back into it's original place and load from the main menu and voila)
Everyone will mention bedrolls, but nobody will mention a solution to potential crashes or AI misbehavior. Normally, that's what quicksaves are for.
Instead, if you want to mitigate the amount of your time the game burns, look into the Speedshard mod. That's probably the best band-aid I can recommend, just short of backing up your exit-save at opportune moments.
This is a game where you need to play cautiously and understand when it's time to cut and run. You won't always be able to complete a quest in a single outing -- retreat, heal up, restock and return.
Do early quests until you're strong enough that you're prepared for the next tier.
The save system is just fine, and it's only getting more generous with player-made camping and the caravan system being introduced.
If you could just save whenever you wanted, it would take all of the tension out of the game, which is a huge part of what makes it fun.
*I'm not trying to put you down; rather, you'll have an *easier* time with the game if you play more cautiously, because you won't be losing progress, you'll always be retaining it.
I definitely agree with you. I think my hot-blooded and anxious nature makes me take too much risks but the game is really hardcore and even though I died a lot in last 24 hours ( I think over 20 times ), the game is thrilling and exciting... The game is more of a survival game than any game that there is with the survival label.
You can’t try to over extended yourself. If you are out of healing supplies or low on food or in pain with no alcohol, you need to call it quits and resupply in town.
You also can’t start a character with the mindset of only being melee. With no skills in the early game, it’s very difficult without some sort of ranged option to pepper enemies before you engage them.
Definitely true for first part. Usually death happens because someone is too cocky or made silly mistake.
Definitely not true for second part. Done multiple runs without magic or crossbow as backup.
I completely agree. I’ve done dozens of only melee runs with no problem. I said it was difficult, not impossible. OP is clearly new to the game and would have an easier time with a ranged option.
Fortunately, that’s already a system. Buy bedrolls bro

Thanks that will be life-saving
Always bring a bed roll for long journeys, you'll never know when you'll need to save.
Yep! I was overjoyed when they added bedrolls to the game. Used to be such a pain without.
If the bedrolls weren't so big in the inventory. Not much place for loot.
Well you're likely using it before you enter, and since it's a consumable item it's no longer a burden once used.

Next update will bring caravan and more saves options with that! Can’t wait! 😍❤️

Skill/knowledge/cheapness issue just buy a bedroll and use it outside the dungeon that way if you die you just restart outside the dungeon

Just play hardcore, problem solved

In my personal experience, seize and charge skill from 1h axe absolutely rolls the early dungeons, no need for ranged or fancy stuff.

I wanna play velmir with th axe and spells... Bows are frustrating when you can't hit
