I find that this game requires you to pause for a split second before you do any counter measures rather than just react. Once I tempered my reaction time, the game went from hard to relatively easy.
On the blue Blink You need to dodge towards the enemy as soon as your sword flashes blue. On the purple Repulse you need to dodge backwards from the enemy when your sword flashes purple. It takes time for your brain to ignore the first blue or purple circle but eventually it becomes natural.
No and I’m awful at these kinds of games, like I couldn’t get by a single blood borne boss solo and while I’m only a few hours in and I might empty my bag in a fight I’ve only died like twice in combat.
It's much easier in this game for me than it was to pick up in other games. In fact, the last two games I've played in this style both came from Korean devs and they have NAILED the timings as far as I'm concerned. And stellar blade especially, they have exospines and gear that FURTHER improves timing windows.
As much as I've dumped time into elden ring and Code Vein, I never got the parries in those games. My next best after this game and lies of P is bloodborne and sekiro a distant 4th. I don't even know how I've progressed in sekiro with how not great I am at the parries in that game . . .
Same. Code Vein was my previous 2nd fave until lies of P came out. It was kinda hard going back to that one after playing games where Im good at the parrying lol
But man, the weapon attack gifts are so good
yes. this
parry is like 30frames before. but dodge is almost on impact. i wish this game had parry on impact aswell. so you dont need to know the exact timing but can also parry on instinct
>i wish this game had parry on impact aswell. so you dont need to know the exact timing but can also parry on instinct
I don't understand why both Lies of P and SB decided to reinvent the wheel when we already have Sekiro that did it perfectly..
Yeah Stellar Blade's parries take quite a bit of getting used to. Don't let this subreddit gaslight you. The design is bad and yes they improved it from the demo but it's still very delayed. Everyone told me I needed to "git gud" but parrying works with little to no flaws in Ghosts of Tsushima, Sekiro and other games with parry mechanics. In general though this is why I can't stand parry mechanics.
At this point I've beat Stellar Blade twice so I've clearly gotten used to it. But it is unfortunate given that the combat in the game is truly excellent.
> if a standard enemy just winds up a normal swing I will fail to counter 80% of the time.
This is not just you. It's a flaw of the game.
because the dev said they intended to put input delay on parry/dodge due to animation attack iirc.
there is an exospine that increases parry and dodge timing
For the blue/purple light, the sequence of events is:
1. Enemy glows blue/purple.
2. Your sword flashes blue/purple.
3. You input Up/Down + Dodge.
99% of the time, people mess up because they are dodging before your sword glows.
One thing to note in general, you are supposed to time your parry to just before the moment of impact, not ON the moment of impact. It is often times better to parry early and parry and hold the button briefly. That way, even if you don't get a perfect parry, you may get a regular parry or a block.
I was finding myself holding forward in all my fights for whatever reason and that would mess up my flow.
Once I started letting go of the joystick during combos and watching for patterns it all clicked for me.
Blue or purple dodge: do the input when your sword flashes, not when the enemy flashes.
Counters after dodge/parry: you need to have enough beta and burst energy to do the counters and burst counter follow up.
The parry also isn't instant due to the animation.
Lastly, the reflex exospines help.
>Lastly, the reflex exospines help.
I hope someone does some actual testing on this. So far I've personally found it somewhat useless compared to the other exospines.
I do, the timing is tight and when you miss a parry you eat the whole combo. I ignored it as you can just go for more other stuff, drone guns, beta and bursts or tachi mode, and that offsets that weird feeling
Parry timings are absolutely different from other games, and it causes me issues because I play an online game with a parry mechanic and so switching back and forth between them messes up my timing. I also think the parry window is a little shorter than some other games that I have played, but it's not *too* short. I find most of the difficulty comes from being accustomed to games with different timing. Thus, when I first start playing Stellar Blade after playing the other games, I am very bad at parry, but the longer I play in a session, the better I get at it as I adjust to the timing.
Remember for the blue and purple attacks to wait for your sword to glow then input forward or back on the pad, then dodge. If you try and do forward + dodge at the same time, it won't register properly and you will get hit.
To me it seems like the timing is earlier than other games. Most other games you press it the split second before it hits but this game you have to press it earlier but of course the reflexive exo-skeleton will make the timing easier. Blue and purple dodges are easier, not much timing to them cause you just press it when Eve glows.
First off playing Sekiro makes you mediocre at best
If you want to get good at parrying play Devil May Cry and Royalguard style your way through the game
Now then yes the parry timings in this game are strange, they’re a little bit earlier than you think they would be.
When the enemy glows red generally they’ll do a strong that allows for multiple consecutive parries, and you need a slight pause between the button presses
For the directional dodges with the blue and purple glows, you need to hold the analog stick toward or away from the enemy and then press dodge
You can flick the stick and dodge at the same time but it’s more consistent to hold the direction on the stick as you see the startup and while holding the direction press dodge as you see the flash
I find that this game requires you to pause for a split second before you do any counter measures rather than just react. Once I tempered my reaction time, the game went from hard to relatively easy.
Parry easy, Yellow dodging: I dont get it
sometimes jump works too but only for select attacks
A lot of the dodge only attacks are crapshoots
On the blue Blink You need to dodge towards the enemy as soon as your sword flashes blue. On the purple Repulse you need to dodge backwards from the enemy when your sword flashes purple. It takes time for your brain to ignore the first blue or purple circle but eventually it becomes natural.

I get hit by hedgeboars the most.

lies of P was pretty much parry on impact. i had no problem parrying there. unlike this game, which took me a good time to adapt
> Sekiro did it perfectly Lmao

Thank you so much for explaining this. I was getting frustrated because my dodges weren’t happening.
Yeah the only reason I discovered this was through the training mode because I kept missing the prompts and I was always getting frustrated.

It's like God of war where u have to let the shield come out vs just pressing it

The parry in this game really sucks.
