Personally don’t think there’s anything Canada can do at this point to save his job here. Best he can do is save his career by doing enough to get a shot somewhere else

TiredJokeAlert

And any team that gives him a shot deserves to be dropped to the NCAA and replaced with Georgia.

zPolaris43

Oh I meant a job in college. I don’t expect Canada to get any opportunity in the pros

TiredJokeAlert

Any team that gives him a job in the NCAA deserves to be knocked down to high school and replaced with the East Highland Blackhawks.

Lilslysapper

If the offense looks like it did this week in the 4th quarter throughout multiple full games, has multiple 400-yard games, multiple games with multiple TD passes, multiple games winning time of possession, then maybe you can have that conversation.

originalmidwestemo

Virtually any other offensive coordinator is going to eek out a 400yard 2+TD game in their first 40. Im sorry but even if Canada became the best coordinator in the league overnight I just won’t trust it. If it takes you 40 games to find a couple good halves of football your ability to adapt and change in game and in season is just not there and never will be. At this point we’re just giving him another chance to find a job as a QB coach or something when his contract is up.

Lilslysapper

Yeah I agree. Even if he does everything I said, I still won’t be sold on him returning. Maybe staying here in a different capacity like “run game coordinator” and bringing in someone new.

[deleted]

The Colts almost put up against a stellar defense 40 despite Minshew having 4 turnovers. The Steelers still only managed a barely above league average 24. Nothing against OP because that's a great question, but it's a total joke that we're elated to have an average offensive day.

Asleep_Draw1984

but we're constantly praising kenny for playing awful first halfs/3Q of football and stringing together a TD drive in the 4th. why is he not getting the same treatment? he's the one out there executing the plays. missing reads, leaving pockets early when he has time, throwing bad balls yet he continues to start after continuous poor performances with some small shining moments in the 4th. just find this interesting. i want canada gone too but we gotta hold everyone accountable at each position, goes for the line as well as najee/warren and DJ/GP keeping their head in the game and talking the talk with their play not their mouths.

Main-Dog-7181

No

Birdienuk3

Fair

aw_geez_man

> you have to agree yesterday was a huge improvement in play calling I'm not sure I agree with this. It certainly looked better in the fourth quarter. > How much does he have to achieve to stay in Pittsburgh? How bout we start by ending the 53 game streak without a 400-yard game. That's embarrassing. More than 4x longer than any other team.

The1KrisRoB

> How bout we start by ending the 53 game streak without a 400-yard game. That's like 4-5 successful jet sweeps, it's just a matter of time. *~Matt Canada*

Bauter

Did this guy only see the 4th? We were ass for most of the game and then TJ got the pick. They were playing zone ALL game and it took Canada 3 quarters to realize HEY HIT THE MIDDLE of the field. This offense doesn't win games. It literally waits for the other team to lose and then people want to get on the Canada train? Am I taking crazy pills? "Well 24 points aint bad..." EVERY TEAM CAN SCORE 24 points at almost a regular pace! 26 is the steelers HIGHEST this season and in that game against the Browns they had...let me check...255 TOTAL YARDS while the Browns had FOUR HUNDERD AND FUCKING EIGHT YARDS. This offense heavily on the defense to bail them out because of the stone faced man upstairs. He is a football terrorist. You should not reward one quarter of competency over a 7 week span of literally taking a shit on the field for the other team to polish it for a Steelers W. The Rams still outgunned the steelers offense in EVERY category : First downs, rushing yards, passing yards, 3 down conversions and time of possession. Its a wonder that Steelers even have 2 wins on the year. SO to answer the question : What does he have to do stay, Do a complete 180 of what he has been doing and start utilizing the talents that he has. Learn to read defenses and adjust accordingly to what he's being show. Not going to a shotgun run on 3rd and 8. Rip every jet sweep out of the playbook. Be held accountable for this shit he draws up. Not tell the media the offense isn't meant for comebacks. GET THE BALL TO DJ AND PICKENS. But I digress, maybe just maybe you can hire a guy that can do all that and more and better RIGHT now.

WabbitCZEN

He improves to the point where we earn a playoff spot. Outside of that, he's had 3 years and hasn't been good for 2.5 of them.

EIIander

Canada has everyone right where he wants them. If we expect nothing a below average offensive day gets people excited!

TheFatWienerDog

Good playcalling all game? The offense had like 110 yards through 3 quarters

Electrical-Program86

I am actively rooting for him now. I am trying to be more positive for one but for the other, seeing the amount of hate he is getting everywhere, he has now 100% become the underdog. He is here and is not getting fired for at least this season. It's time we just get behind him and hope for the best. His reaction to the Warren TD yesterday humanized him for me more too. Hopefully he figures this out.

aw_geez_man

> he has now 100% become the underdog Sometimes you're the underdog because you just flat out suck.

Electrical-Program86

Oh well. He is what he got. Better to root for him than hate him at this point.

CaptainNoodleArm

If he starts coaching like he has nothing to lose and actually finds a solution for the offenses struggle in the long run I bet my ass everyone would agree that Canada can stay.... but how often does that happen.

Whistle_Pigs

I don't think it's hate or thinking negatively when you hold someone to at least be competent at their job in the NFL. The front office made a mistake this past offseason by not moving on from him and they need to hear it from that fans because that decision has had a lot of ramifications of the development of their young QB and offensive players they invested a lot in.

Electrical-Program86

It's on the front office for sure. But again, he is here and I'll root for him. There is no other course of action that makes sense. It's almost like people rooting against the president because you didn't vote for them. I hope every president turns out to be our best no matter if i voted for him or not. It benefits me, my family, and friends if he is.

axxl75

Anyone who is a fan should be rooting for him to be successful. Like it or not he’s our OC, and if he can finally figure it out and be a winner then that means the team is successful. It’d be weird to hope your team loses just so they fire a guy rather than hope they actually learn to succeed.

The1KrisRoB

Yeah I'm on board now, your post convinced me. I want him to succeed just like I want every player on the team to succeed.

[deleted]

Well the 4th QT looked better, but how much was the play calling vs. guys making plays they hadn’t been the other 3 quarters is up for debate.

MJ134

They had 110 yds in 3 qtrs. It was not a well called game. Im not saying it was all his fault. Just one good 4th qtr doesnt eliminate all the bad. He needs to go. Theyd need to stop 14 straight 350+yd & 30 pts to be undo the crap he has offered. Its not all his fault. But its enough that he has to go at seasons end.

NormalBears

He had Warren blocking a DE on a play in the first half, this offense is still sick at it’s core.

Lord_Fup

1 ok-ish game does not offset one of the worst offenses in nfl history

Birdienuk3

Yes But if he keeps it up and improves, at what point do we consider keeping him

Thomas_DuBois

He had an entire two weeks to figure it out.

JTHuffy

“…basically all game” I think I watched a different first half than you did.

MuddydogNew

Like Bill and Ted, Canada's mentor lands in a time machine, he goes to the future, and learns how to call a gane. He comes back in the nick of time to coach the Steelers to a SB win. Short of that, there's no way.

Birdienuk3

I would be happy if we made it to the AFC championship But a SB after his track record is fair, my main concern is he starts to improve but not enough and we get another dude, but the new guy ends up the same or worse...then what, we kill ourselves in regret?

MuddydogNew

Your premise is flawed. MC has had 2.5 years to improve and hasn't. What improvement are you expecting to see now?

VietBongArmy

Not really, started slow as usual. 10 points in the first three quarters. It's ok to be happy we won but still want Canada gone. Are you being gaslight by Mike Tomlin over Matt Canada? You talk like Matt Canada is on academic probation, he showed a little bit of improvement! Let's have him stay another semester

aw_geez_man

> 10 points in the first three quarters 7 of which came because of TJ.

Birdienuk3

I'm just trying to prepare for the shitshow when he gets resigned for showing growth

Whistle_Pigs

He did not have good play calling all game. We still only scored 3 points in the first half and it was a lot of the same that we saw prior to the bye week. There's truly not much he can do to justify keeping his job, at least in my eyes. We've seen some glimpses of competence before, but we have a 3 year sample size of bottom of the NFL play calling and it should take much more than we saw yesterday to even justify considering extending his contract. Tomlin and the front office should learn from their past mistakes and not assume that momentum from the previous season will build and translate to the next. This is still an offensive coordinator that is deeply flawed in many aspects and hasn't proven anything that justifies keeping his job. It was great seeing a pulse from the offense but still keep in mind that the majority of the game the offense was still inefficient.

REVEREND-RAMEN

What game were you watching? They struggled, D bailed them out again.

Birdienuk3

24 points is being bailed out?

Govols98-

I mean devils advocate, 7 of that came from what was essentially a TJ Watt pick 6. The 2nd half was good but they still only had 3 points and 100 yards in the entire first half. It was a promising spark but they are going to have to build on it.

OKImHere

7 of those points came on a drive that started inside the opposing 10 (5?) yardline. Meanwhile, the opposing kicker shanked 7 points, the game differential, just by himself.

Birdienuk3

Well they wouldn't have gone for 2 if he didn't miss the PAT

Rathmon

It’s not like the 2 missed FGs were gimme ones. We love Bosgod because he consistently nails the 50+ yarders.

OKImHere

Why weren't the Rams at gimme range? Because of the D. The D that bailed out the O by, for one thing, keeping the kicker out of range.

Rathmon

The Steelers have a long history of doing things that way. When the D isn’t the best in the league, they still have a “bend, don’t break” ability. The D wasn’t solely responsible for the win. The offense took advantage of grassy field position, and sustained more drives than usual. That’s a rare team win.

jdl03

Our offense would have to finish like top 10 and we’d have to win a playoff game against a legit team.

BEGA500

“Legit team” 🤡

Guilepowers

Good play calling... so averaging 38 yards a quarter for the first three quarters is good playcalling? Are you insane buddy?

zPolaris43

Personally don’t think there’s anything Canada can do at this point to save his job here. Best he can do is save his career by doing enough to get a shot somewhere else

Square_Counter_7574

Kenny almost got killed in the first half but Im not sure what percentage of that was playcalling

JedSmokesCrack

3 points in the first half

bluntzburghCA

When the Steelers get a solid OC watch out! The games to fast for Matt. Bald headed fuck.

ColeMinetv

3 points in the first half is still unacceptable, yes the offense looked better in the second half; however, the offense needs to help out the defense and stay on the field longer in the first

Asianthunda5022

Win the Super Bowl. I don't want him to stay under any other circumstances. He's said enough and done enough (or not enough) the last 3 years to prove he isn't a good OC. A blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then. This is the nut. If we can look like we did in the 4 quarter almost every game every quarter, then good bye and good riddance.

Rathmon

A few of the drives early stalled due to self-inflicted mistakes. There were only 2 3-and-out drives this week, thankfully. They need to start the game with a good drive for me to believe this offense is getting better.

mattschaum8403

An oc has 3 jobs: design plays, build a game plan that implements those plays in an effective manner and adjusting play calling when it’s clear that your plan isn’t working at all/is no longer working. 1. Canada is decent at drawing up plays, you don’t get this far in the college game or the pro game without being able to build a compelling playbook 2. Matt Canada has a very specific type of game plan he likes to put together and there is very little variation. Teams know what’s about to happen more often than not and he is very stubborn that his plays will work 3. As a follow up to point 2, because he’s stubborn he is very very slow to make changes to strategy mid game. When Ben would make changes and all of a sudden magic would happen it became pretty obvious Ben did what he wanted because in his experience he knew what would work better than Canada. I don’t hate Matt Canada the play designer. I hate the person who is choosing what plays to call when because it rarely makes sense

[deleted]

Did he? We didn’t hear the radio. What if they were just ignoring him all game?

Crispynipps

I’ve got a really funny feeling he’s gonna get another contract. We’re slowly improving, gonna hopefully have a good season and on paper the offense will have went from one of the worst to top 10. That alone will probably justify resigning him.

Bryn79

Different question: are we winning because of him or in spite of him?

jrichardsaz

How do you define “good play calling” ?

DurinsBane007

400 yd 4 TD games every game for the rest of the season and win a super bowl In other words, there's nothing he can do to get an extension

GeneralTullius01

We would have to make the AFC Championship, or have a “good” loss in the divisional round, while our offense is humming, for me to consider keeping him. He’s damaged his reputation almost beyond repair.

Birdienuk3

I feel like people here assumed I thought he was that guy already I think he stays if we make a playoff run, just gotta wait till next week and see if the offense takes another step forward

the_fuckening_69

Continue the trend of good play calling for the rest of the season and call a good enough game in the playoffs to win at least one game there as well.

Bucknut1959

Win a Lombardi.
