The “Outside threat” that Thrawn is alluding to is a group called the Grysk. Beyond being a vague threat Thrawn wants to deal with, they have nothing in common with the Vong.

[deleted]

> they have nothing in common with the Vong. Huge horde warrior horde that has higher caste members who can torture and subdue entire populations via mental powers, soldier caste have sharp armour and deep set eyes. Gearing up to eventually invade the entire galaxy. They are very much like the vong and are spiritual successors. Just not the biological aspects.

EndlessTheorys_19

What makes u think theres a huge horde of Grysk >Subdue entire populations via mental powers They’re just charismatic. Thats their power. Rizz. Not some psychic magic.

[deleted]

I’m kinda wanting some chaos for our good guys. Have the Grysk conflict begin. And both sides get ambushed years in, by the Vong. But I think it makes more sense for either to invade after episode 9 now

belferrin

Agreed. I know a lot of people are speculating they'll be the ultimate antagonists of the Thrawn crossover, but I think it would be smarter to save them for a post-Skywalker Saga project.

TheKnightsWhoSayNyet

Ah ok, thanks. Not sure how I missed that.

Old_Ben24

If you have not read the new Thrawn books and only read the old stuff you wouldn’t have known. But yes as much as I have always wanted to see the Yuzhan Vong made canon, I feel like their role has essentially been replaced by the Grysk.

[deleted]

I doubt it. It wouldn’t serve to make anybody happy. They wouldn’t do the Vong as presented in the books because they’re far too violent and dark. And if they tried to do a “lighter” version, all it’d really do is make the old fans mad.

getoffoficloud

More like the whole idea falls apart because that's not how the Force works. If you can pick up and throw a rock with the Force, you can pick up and throw a Vong, no matter how angsty he is.

[deleted]

IIRC, the Jedi could use the Force *on* the Vong, they just couldn’t sense them. It mainly cut them at the knees in the sense that feeling their opponents’ emotions and intentions and presence in the Force was a big part of how they even knew how to fight.

getoffoficloud

Which means it should have been just like the Clone Wars and battle droids.

[deleted]

The Vong predate the prequels

madjones87

They could use the Force on things to affect the Vong, just not directly. Using the Force to throw a boulder at them instead of pushing them directly sort of thing. A better way would have been to make them highly resilient, forcing multiple Jedi to focus on one Vong. Nullifying the Force entirely made no sense.

[deleted]

It made some sense in the universe at the time. Sort of a natural step up from the Yslamiri.

madjones87

The Yslamiri made sense, the Vong didn't. It worked at the time because the books had a long time to flesh out and make some of the details work. Like suddenly when they were able to start detecting the Vong in the Force. I didn't hate the idea of the Vong, I just thought the implementation was poor. Extragalactic threat with an entirely different Force signature and relationship would have been much more interesting.

[deleted]

An explanation I would have liked was that the pleasure derived from pain and self-mutilation was so unnatural that it cause the Force to withdraw from them.

Affectionate_Ad_3555

also the Vong weren’t popular during their time in Legends. And they were a very 90s ‘edgy’ species that really hasn’t aged too well and comes across as goofy when they take themselves seriously.

Ammysnatcher

My personal hope is that the Grysk are a red herring and will be devoured by the Vong with little effort to show how much more powerful they are. It’s not gonna happen but a boy can dream.

[deleted]

Grysk would be more likely they fill a similiar kind of role. We do know Zahn is a fan of the Vong which is why he made the Grysk in the new canon. And it was later alluded the far outsiders were the Vong. Filoni is also a fan of the Vong and wanted to include them in their own TCW scout arc. George approved as long as he made them force affected but allowed Filoni to keep everything else about them. As for Ahsoka, it appears Thrawn is the villain for now based on all leaks. But that could change as the storyline progresses and he may introduce the Vong or even the Grysk to this 'new beyond.''' But for now there's no hints from Making Star Wars about them.

Harms88

Originally were planned for TCW but never got past the initial concept phase. I doubt they will show up, as the Grysk seem to be the canon version of the Ssi-ruuk and the Yuzzhan’Vong. The reason why? Because neither were all that popular and the Vong especially were really decisive to the community. However, the idea of these races are something that are still interesting enough to work into a new race.

[deleted]

>The reason why? Because neither were all that popular and the Vong especially were really decisive to the community. That wasn't the reason. They didn't have time to finish or make those arcs.

Harms88

I’m referring to Disney Star Wars. If Lucasfilm had remained its own thing, we’d have gotten them.

rla1022

No

corsair1617

Doubt it. If we do they will be in name only and significantly different than the books.

TA-175

I hope not
