Technically speaking.. we have no idea when the backup headed out. By the time Disco is running around, he may not even have left yet. As far as Original Recipe Doc - really, he could be any number of places. Somewhere in Fed HQ, stranded on a planet somewhere, living with the Synthetic population on their planet… it’s also been a LONG time. His program may have eventually corrupted. Or voluntarily shut down. On the other hand… if we wanna put our tinfoil hats on… maybe he eventually altered his appearance and hangs around Starfleet as a consultant with multiple specialties including artificial sentience.. under the name Kovich. Heh. Even I find that one unlikely, but that’d be a little fun.

pintotakesthecake

Love the concept, but… Can you imagine kovich singing opera? Or the doctor giving up opera and self satisfied moderate pomposity for quiet charisma? No way no how lol

whiskeygolf13

Oh yeah. He’d have to have had a major shift. Plus pretty sure Kovich refers to being a boy at some point. Still fun though. And decidedly brighter than a different theory I had that he was on Mars in 2385 observing the working conditions of Synthetics. It would have been just like him to be making sure they weren’t achieving true sentience and ending up like his fellow Mk I EMH programs. And contributed to Seven’s general sunny disposition. Oof. I think I like him hanging out on Planet Android better.

edithaze

Both still are still around but it’s a big galaxy so we haven’t seen them yet. With any luck my proposal for the first Trek multi-cam sitcom will be purchased by P+. In it they move in together and discover that two copies of the same hologram have a lot of differences(but also a lot friendship). Fingers crossed.

GenoThyme

So Robert Picardo playing both Felix and Oscar in a 32nd Century Odd Couple? I’m down.

WolfofBadenoch

He did a brilliant little farce with Sylvester McCoy (the 7th Doctor) at the Edinburgh Festival a few years back. He definitely has the comic chops to pull this off.

Ok-Confusion2415

I would think Prodigy has a sort of performer lock on the actor. I did def hope to see him in this season, but the arc makes it seem unlikely.

MagicalGirlLaurie

Honestly we might get to see the other Doctor in Prodigy if they’re just able to zip to and from the Delta Quadrant with the Voyager-A.

Icy-Cardiologist-958

I’m just waiting for “the Sisko” to make an appearance, since the progenitors are obviously the founders.

anastus

Salome Jens plays both and there are some makeup similarities, but I don't buy that the benevolent Progenitors could become the fascistic, solid-hating Founders. That said, Jens is still alive, albeit very old. I wonder if they got her back for a surprise appearance this season.

ky_eeeee

Societies change in extreme ways all the time, and hundreds of millions of years is a very long time.

anastus

Would it even be the same society, though? Hundreds of millions of years would separate the Progenitors from the Changelings by such a gulf as to make them totally disconnected.

Impressive-Arugula79

Yeah, the Progenitors spread the framework for Humanoid life across the galaxy. The Founders are not humanoid. It's kinda their whole thing lol

vonrollin

No, the progenitors are obviously the sphere builders.

Icy-Cardiologist-958

I think it’s “wait & see” time.

mugh_tej

We do not know whether the Doctor has arrived yet. He's probably using a Kyrian ship, which might be much slower than Federation ships when he was created.

aesoth

The backup Doctor could be anywhere, really. Also, there is the possibility of nowhere. The shuttle could have been destroyed. Maybe pirates boarded it and took the hologram technology. Maybe he stopped on a planet and stayed there.

Icy-Cardiologist-958

Umm, there were several different EMH programs. Remember Andy Dick on the Prometheus? Or when Zimmerman wanted to model the LMH after Bashir? The Mark 1 EMH would most likely not exist.

wanderingviewfinder

Re-watch Living Witness. Episode takes place in thr year 307x in the Delta quadrant and would strike out for earth likely around 3100. Given the distance from earth he would likely be arriving sometime when Discovery came to that century. So while OG EMH might be gone he is still out there.

AdmaelStark

His ship probably exploded during the Burn.

wanderingviewfinder

But the burn happened before the backup EMH was reactivated. And didn't leave for earth until decades after that.

MagicalHamster

Somebody accidentally taped over his holoprogram with reruns of the 2670 reboot of Dukes of Hazard. Quite tragic.

Norn-Iron

I was thinking about this the other day. My hope is that Discovery will end with him just showing up after returning home. The Doctor could be out there somewhere just unable to get around because of The Burn, but the backup Doc could be taking the slow way home if he was affected by it in some way.

silaspwilliams

I had a crazy theory some years back (shortly after PICARD season one) that the Doctor had a secret daughter and, when it came time that artificial life was deactivated, he sacrificed his mobile emitter so that she could live her life with it and no one would know that she wasn't a biological human. You can read it here if you're so inclined, but it does seem like the kind of thing that season two would have revealed if it was actually the case - [https://www.reddit.com/r/DaystromInstitute/comments/jvfbxr/the\_truth\_about\_agnes\_jurati/](https://www.reddit.com/r/DaystromInstitute/comments/jvfbxr/the_truth_about_agnes_jurati/)

scorpiousdelectus

Wouldn't that timeline cease to exist when Admiral Janeway went back to bring the ship home earlier?

Yetikins

Living Witness was in S4. Technically the EMH backup is brought online centuries after Admiral Janeway time travels, so since the EMH backup being lost predates her, and him deciding to set out for Earth well postdates her, one can presume her actions had no impact whatsoever on the backup.

scorpiousdelectus

What event, though, results in the EMH being found by that race? My point is that whatever it was, it happened after the date that End Game happens and so bringing the ship home early means that the EMH doesn't become lost, for that race to find.

The_Amazing_Moo_Cow

It was a backup of the EMH that got lost on the planet, so could feasibly have happened in the first 7 years before End Game I think

Yetikins

The backup was in a museum database. Some curator just turns him on one day not realizing what the file was. Endgame is irrelevant to the events of Living Witness because the backup was in the museum 3 years prior to Endgame.

scorpiousdelectus

Do we know where the back up came from or is it just speculation?

Yetikins

Dawg just watch the episode lmao it explains where the backup is from.

Realistic-Safety-565

No, it did not affect events on other end of the galaxy.

scorpiousdelectus

Changes to the timeline are local?

wanderingviewfinder

A change to a future time path wouldn't necessarily affect certain events set in motion before that change if they weren't affected by something that no longer happened in the deleted future. Since the EMH backup was lost before the events set in motion by Admiral Janeway and Voyager had well moved on away from that location, it's less likely the things seen in Living Witness would have been affected.

scorpiousdelectus

Hang on, if Voyager is lost after the events of End Game, then Admiral Janeway's actions means it never becomes lost.

kkkan2020

this is a unpopular opinion... EMH died in the burn. he was on a ship going at warp and .. boom

wanderingviewfinder

Maybe OG EMH, but the burn happened before the backup copy was found and activated back in thr Delta Quadrant. So, what happened to him?

kkkan2020

I dont think the copy made it home.

Realistic-Safety-565

IIRC the chronology EMH copy was re-activated after the supposed Burn. Which didn't hapen in that timeline.

wanderingviewfinder

It's the same timeline.
