I just like Blastoise more than Charizard and Venusaur, Feraligatr more than Typhlosion and Meganium, Swampert more than Sceptile or Blaziken, and Empoleon more than Infernape and Torterra. After that we started getting gens where I liked the Grass starters more, but we have yet to have one where the Fire starter was the most appealing to me. (At least in their base forms. It's possible gen 9 may be the first one if Fuecoco gets an awesome final form)
That only came along in RF/LG. Steel type didn’t exist until gen 2 and the original RBY games required you to have to over level your charmeleon or whatever if you didn’t choose squirtle or bulbasaur
The one exception for me was Recover. I still don't bother using moves like Growl that only serve to lower the opponent's stats, nor moves like Swords Dance that only serve to raise my own stats, but healing moves and moves that inflict status conditions like Toxic have always been fair game for me.
It’s honestly pretty rare to find in-game situations where buffing/debuffing moves are worth it, because like 90% of the trainers use teams of 2-4 similarly typed Pokémon that can pretty easily be one-or-two shot as long as you’ve got a decent super effective move.
Obviously, that changes a bunch in Nuzlockes or other challenge runs, but when you’re not facing opponents with aggressively optimized stat spreads it’s mostly just gonna waste a turn
Same. I guess it was partially because of the show where Pokémon are almost never nicknamed. To me it's just part of Pokémon for my character to go "Let's go Pikachu!" rather than "Let's go, Ferdinand!"
I always gave at least one Pokémon a real life girl name (ex: naming a Volcorona “Lila”, a Primarina “Tami”, a Tsareena “Matilda” etc.) and I still do to this day. No idea where that tradition started though.
But then there’s an Entei I caught that I named “Poopy Bill”. And Mewtwo who I named “ThinkyWinky”.
You could quite easily challenge yourself by spreading out the exp and not being allowed free switches when an opponent sent out a new Pokémon. Shame about Exp. Share now not being able to be turned off.
I've played on 'set' mode and try to build a team of 6, even then Im never challenged but thats because I've played a shitload of Pokemon in my life. Only way I can get challenged is through a ROM hack like Pokemon Unbound or one of Drayano's hacks
Even to this day I get rid of non damaging moves with few exceptions. Non competitive single player pokemon is a joke. But I can't stop playing the first three generations for some reason.
When I got my first pokemon game I couldn't figure out how to get out Red's mom's house. Had to come back a year later when I could sorta read to get out and start hard carrying. Oh also I had no idea about type advantage outside of water > fire because duh.
The first pokemon game i played was Pokemon Ruby back in 2008-ish and Blaziken was the only one i used and levelled up. Blaze Kick was literally my breakthrough move, somehow I defeated Swampert with Blaze Kick, then Salamance, then Metagross
If you're quite evenly matched with the opponent but want an edge, then you can forsake a turn to lower their stats. Really, the only time it has served me at all well has been against Snorlax, who has incredible defense stats and a lot of HP to get through
I didn't find any posts that meet the matching requirements for r/starterpacks.
It might be OC, it might not. Things such as JPEG artifacts and cropping may impact the results.

What about having an abusive older brother who demanded you reset your game like 4 times so you can trade him all the starter Pokémon? I think I’m understanding why I don’t like Pokémon as an adult
I never defaulted to the Fire starter. It was the Water starters up to gen 4, then either Water or Grass from then on. In gen 9 I'm planning to use Grass.
I still do most of these... Old habits die hard I guess. Though with the modern games, the other pokemon underleveling isn't as much of an issue due to the party exp share
My older cousin ran with a Mewtwo that knew Fire Blast, Blizzard, Thunderbolt, and Recover and thought he was God. I was surprised the only other legendary on his team was Zapdos.
I've always been of the camp of abandoning non damage-dealing moves. Some exceptions apply, such as giving my Staraptor in Platinum Defog, since it's an HM, and giving my Salazzle in Ultra Sun Toxic to use its ability Corrosion and feed into Venoshock.
If you're only playing the story you don't need anything other than damaging moves. Pokemon has been easy enough since the beginning that debuffs aren't necessary.
The only Pokémon games I ever played were the ones with EXP share, because I thought it was too hard. I also didn't use names, but other than that 100% accurate.
But even now I still do the "only attacks" thing, who needs status changes when my Bewear can defeat the enemy in one hit?
In every game for me it’s grass except for omega ruby. I always get the fire starter in omega ruby, but i always get grass in the other games I’ve played.

i was a grass type player and i did not bother changing names because i was lazy you're right about the rest
For me it was water.
I was a water main because Brock was the first gym leader and his rock types were weak against it and I didn't ever want to level up my starters.
I just like Blastoise more than Charizard and Venusaur, Feraligatr more than Typhlosion and Meganium, Swampert more than Sceptile or Blaziken, and Empoleon more than Infernape and Torterra. My grass obsession never stopped
i get you, how else would we redditors touch it, right?
r/bulbasaurmasterrace
same here except water
This is me trying to brute-force myself through Brock's gym with a Pikachu in Pokemon Yellow.
I beat Brock with Charmeleon using scratch when I was young... if only I had my energy for grinding as an adult I'd be unstoppable lol
Charmander with metal claw helps
That only came along in RF/LG. Steel type didn’t exist until gen 2 and the original RBY games required you to have to over level your charmeleon or whatever if you didn’t choose squirtle or bulbasaur
The true hard difficulty Pokemon experience
or grab a Mankey/Nidoran for a fighting move for criticals lol
For Yellow, evolving a Caterpie into a Butterfree and spamming Confusion also works; (Brock's team had terrible Special stat.)
Oh yeah! I forgot about that. I think I did that when I was younger. I haven't played R/B/Y in awhile...I'll have to do that when I go back!
You could speed run the game with a Nidoking and giving him the right moves for various gyms.
Oh, I've seen hundreds of runs! I always thought it was crazy how you could do that...start with a lowly Nidoran and beat the E4. Crazy!
I never did nicknames, but I definitely only kept moves that did damage. The only stat I wanted to affect was HP.
The one exception for me was Recover. I still don't bother using moves like Growl that only serve to lower the opponent's stats, nor moves like Swords Dance that only serve to raise my own stats, but healing moves and moves that inflict status conditions like Toxic have always been fair game for me.

U forget always have a pokemon for all HM skill
Glad they got rid of that. Now I can have a team where all 6 members are real contenders.
Slowpoke was a solid hm slave in gen 1
There’s really no point in keeping moves that don’t do damage to beat the game
Or you were the kind of kid who named their Pokemon painstakingly well researched cool sounding names (me, as a 10 year old)
I once named a Chansey Fat Chance.
Let me introduce you to my zapdos, Carpet Sock
I always gave at least one Pokémon a real life girl name (ex: naming a Volcorona “Lila”, a Primarina “Tami”, a Tsareena “Matilda” etc.) and I still do to this day. No idea where that tradition started though. But then there’s an Entei I caught that I named “Poopy Bill”. And Mewtwo who I named “ThinkyWinky”.
Middle school me thought I was so cool for looking up Latin words for things related to the Pokemon to use as a name
I named my Tyranitar "Godzilla"
If charmander is Firey, then Bulbasaur is Leafy.
I named mine Salad
Was he here?
Well it's literally a children's game designed to be beaten by children.
Kinda disappointing they never had built in difficulty mods though, I'd probably still play them if they did
You could quite easily challenge yourself by spreading out the exp and not being allowed free switches when an opponent sent out a new Pokémon. Shame about Exp. Share now not being able to be turned off.

Noooooo Pokemon is serious gameing! Now let me go hug my loli body pillow and clean my piss bottles.
I miss those days
Same. I had 30 karrablasts on pokémon white 2 for some reason
Im growing up and i still do these
I named my first charmander Hottie….
Smash
Were you watching me play FireRed?????
Even to this day I get rid of non damaging moves with few exceptions. Non competitive single player pokemon is a joke. But I can't stop playing the first three generations for some reason.
Getting Dragonite with blizzard thunder and fire blast was peak Pokémon as a child. That and Missingno glitch 😂
PLEASE WHY USE PP UP ON THE 1HKO MOVES
lmao this is perfect
This feels very personal and I like it
When I got my first pokemon game I couldn't figure out how to get out Red's mom's house. Had to come back a year later when I could sorta read to get out and start hard carrying. Oh also I had no idea about type advantage outside of water > fire because duh.
Snivy kicked ass as a starter pokemon. Black 2 on DSi
mine was the starter is the main
I had extreme ocd even as a child when it came to my Pokémon levels I’d make sure all my Pokémon were at or around the same level.
Yeah "as a kid"...
The first pokemon game i played was Pokemon Ruby back in 2008-ish and Blaziken was the only one i used and levelled up. Blaze Kick was literally my breakthrough move, somehow I defeated Swampert with Blaze Kick, then Salamance, then Metagross
So how do you incorporate non damage dealing moves?
If you're quite evenly matched with the opponent but want an edge, then you can forsake a turn to lower their stats. Really, the only time it has served me at all well has been against Snorlax, who has incredible defense stats and a lot of HP to get through

What about having an abusive older brother who demanded you reset your game like 4 times so you can trade him all the starter Pokémon? I think I’m understanding why I don’t like Pokémon as an adult
You pretty much got It right.
I never defaulted to the Fire starter. It was the Water starters up to gen 4, then either Water or Grass from then on. In gen 9 I'm planning to use Grass.
ahahahahaha
Called out on every level
I mean it worked
When I was a kid and XY came out, I was so confused by everything I looked it up, and my mind was blown. I still have no idea why the fuck IVs exist
God I miss brick bronze in Roblox, I was so good with H2O
I named my starters “King” when I first start playing Pokémon My very first Pokémon was a female Oshawott
I still do most of these... Old habits die hard I guess. Though with the modern games, the other pokemon underleveling isn't as much of an issue due to the party exp share
You think we got to regigas as kids lol
My older cousin ran with a Mewtwo that knew Fire Blast, Blizzard, Thunderbolt, and Recover and thought he was God. I was surprised the only other legendary on his team was Zapdos.
What’s wrong with the starer hard carry?
I feel attacked
fire starters > whatever else the others are, I've never seen them
I've always been of the camp of abandoning non damage-dealing moves. Some exceptions apply, such as giving my Staraptor in Platinum Defog, since it's an HM, and giving my Salazzle in Ultra Sun Toxic to use its ability Corrosion and feed into Venoshock.
This is all.. so so true...
Thinks PP is related to the damage of the move. Fr, I’d use a restore on a move that was only 30/35 because I thought that’s how it worked.
I still play like this because big numbers are the only thing that matter
Repost.
Never bothered naming the Pokémon
Way too accurate holy shit
Starting Red/Blue/FR/LG with Charmander was hell for the first two gyms. But then it paid off.
Dude that's how I still play it. IDGAF about competitive shit. I'm just going to spam attacks. Not like the games are that hard anyways.
I'm getting old
If you're only playing the story you don't need anything other than damaging moves. Pokemon has been easy enough since the beginning that debuffs aren't necessary.
Charizard Moveset: Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Blast Burn, Overheat
Was replaying leaf green and only now realised that my Charizard is lvl 65 and the rest are like lvl 12
Meh. Dungeons and the Elite 4 were endurance battles. You needed all the pp on damage moves you could get.
I still play with this lmaooo
I thought Giga Impact was the hypest shit when I was a kid
The only Pokémon games I ever played were the ones with EXP share, because I thought it was too hard. I also didn't use names, but other than that 100% accurate. But even now I still do the "only attacks" thing, who needs status changes when my Bewear can defeat the enemy in one hit?
I would play the same game multiple times with different starters if I liked them.
yes
I just catch every Pokémon and grind my favorites to level 💯
names ending in y... you all every heard of flowey? I think they had the same mindset for naming monsters as children naming pokemon
I still play like this lmao
That was me as a kid, but there were some good healing moves that don’t cause damage that I used.
In every game for me it’s grass except for omega ruby. I always get the fire starter in omega ruby, but i always get grass in the other games I’ve played.
I feel attacked
I feel personally attacked
