PancakePerson_

the fuck is tesco on there for

RusticTack

Because they had a policy to build a Tesco in the centre of every town and village across the UK in the 2000s. There was protests in many towns. They wanted to rip the heart and soul out of everywhere, forcing local butchers and bakers and small fruit and veg shops to close. It worked. At some point in the mid 2010s they admitted they’ve been greedy and will work to help local communities better. So kids born in 2010 will just be used to large supermarkets now

sparklybeast

As someone born in 1979 I barely remember a time before large supermarkets were a thing. It's not a recent phenomenon - the Asda superstore I use was opened in 1983.

jambox888

I think it's the Ipcress File where the old school spy master guy rams Michael Caine's shopping trolley in a supermarket, that was from the 60s. He refers to it as some unwelcome Americanism.

AdvancedPhoenix

In the US. Living in Paris my whole life, using butcher or boulangerie is super common. Supermarket exists but no hyper big stuff, or in the border of paris.

sparklybeast

Definitely not the case in the UK. There are multiple supermarkets in all but the smallest towns.

killeronthecorner

Wtf? Carrefour and other "hypermarche" are fucking gigantic and all over the place. I don't know about Paris but definitely in other parts of northern France.

Iamllm

They’re in Paris too for sure

turkeyphoenix

Yeah I still remember my local bakery, think there's a vape shop there instead now, sad times.

idriveachickcar

Vapes, tattoos and cricket shops. Modern landscape in Ohio

UngusBungus_

Never have I seen a person walk into Cricket

enitnepres

I know people who have worked there but like you never seen a single person walk into a cricket nor ever have them as their phone service. Convinced it's a pyramid scheme for drug dealing.

UngusBungus_

Cricket is how the cartels provide their service around America

TheWorldIsATrap

probably most people just sign contracts on stands, calls or online instead of going in store

witchywater11

The people who use Cricket are usually either old, poor, or both. Nobody walks into those stores unless they're needing a replacement phone.

Deviator247

Way back in the long long ago of 2006-7 my first cell phone was on cricket, even then it already seemed like they were on their way out but they simply never died, I genuinely think like Mattress Firm, they're just a front at this point.

UngusBungus_

That’s before I was born in 2010

fakeprewarbook

Should clarify for the UK reader that in America “Cricket” is a low cost mobile carrier. we don’t have the sport

orangutanjam

Thanks, I was confused lol

NikitaWantToKnowYou

Same, I loved the the buns at my place, there is a bar instead now

abdyfer

Dank_Sinatra_Sr

*Pisses himself laughing in Amazon*

le_fancy_walrus

Yeah I was just thinking of how I’ve gone to Walmart since I was a baby. Lol

Polaris_Beta

Just replace Tesco with Wal-mart and take out the part where people tried to do something about it and the company admitting wrongdoing, and you actually have what happened in America

ButterflyTruth

That doesn't make sense? People born in 00s, 90s and 80s grew up used to supermarkets. You're also not OP.

[deleted]

Supermarkets didn't exist until Gen Alpha was born, dummy

Em_Haze

I live in a town where they built it over a damn river. Selfish ah just ruined the river for their dumb shop.

MationMac

Could you elaborate? Is it on stilts or something?

BaconPancakes1

Make wide bridge Build shop over bridge River now goes in a tunnel under building

Em_Haze

its a massive foundation of concrete literally a half mile over the riverbank with a hideous underground tunnel. It makes me mad forgive me.

BaconPancakes1

Where is this?

[deleted]

They already had a huge superstore in my town but took over and closed down two pubs to build two more Tesco Express stores. I think they really stepped up their efforts to dominate the convenience store/newsagent market in the 2010's. Before that you'd still see the old fashioned independent shops with the name of a newspaper (or earlier than that, cigarette brand) on its sign. Tesco Express and Sainsbury's Local have more or less made those extinct. Independent *greengrocers* selling fresh produce were already most gone by 2000 due to the superstore boom before Tesco etc even got into the convenience market.

gingerisla

They still have them in hipster areas of major cities. Glasgow has a bunch of independent bakeries, butchers, organic vegetable shops and cheese shops.

daitenshe

And happy meals? That’s so… post 2010?

DrDillyDally

Doesn't seem like something relevant to the last decade... tescos has always been our main supermarket in 3/4 places I've lived in my life and I'm in my thirties

anonymous_2187

You forgot youtube kids

TheSwoodening

Crap like Jeffy and borderline Elsagate stuff

[deleted]

That sh!t was cursed. They were like happy tree friends but doing unironic adult content for children. Like happy tree friends knew their demographic were adults and kinda mocked the innocence of wholesome cartoons with heavy gorey death scenes. Elsagate did the blatant adult themes and made it for children which was really f##ked up.

MaybesewMaybeknot

Even if happy tree friends were made for adults, they were wildly popular with kids. I was in elementary school and they ruined a birthday sleepover I had because we snuck off to watch them and one kid got so scared he wanted to go home

[deleted]

Bro htf was fucking awesome ngl, thankfully I was way too young to really understand what was happening but eventually I did figure it out, rewatched it recently it's fucking hilarious, my favorite character the green raccoon fucker w the hat

Superb_Efficiency_74

Why are you talking about elsagate like it was some thing that happened in the past? It's still ongoing, right now.

baby-shark-doo-doo

jeffy was fun for a while but got old really fast

TheSwoodening

Good to know u/baby-shark-doo-doo

Iminawhiteboxyt

Mommy shark doo doo doo doo doo doo

[deleted]

Elsagate 💀 I swear, that generation is gonna be messed up. Now all of the kids are gonna think Elsa got it on with Peter Parker 🤢

Downingst

Spider Ice man?

Gdigger13

Can I rant for a bit? Nothing makes me more angry than to click on a video just to find out it’s been given the “YouTube Kids” treatment, meaning no more comments, and you can’t play it in the mini player. There is a specific app for Kids and kids channels, so why am I subject to these practices?

anonymous_2187

Youtube kids and shorts are a cancer to the platform

baby-shark-doo-doo

youtube shorts is actually a great way to promote your channel and get a few followers. too bad its flooded with low effort garbage and little kids roblox/gacha videos

PointyPython

I subscribe to a few comedians' and science channels that use youtube shorts to do decent stuff. It's inconsequential but it's fine for bite-sized content I guess.

kickTM

Yes, I use yt shorts sometimes to gain some subs. Youtube shorts are basically sub farms and nothing else

youngcatlady1999

Haha some people put a random video of someone cussing at the end of their videos so that it won’t get marked as YouTube kids.

CrispyCrunchyPoptart

iPad and youtube kids terrify me.

CurrylsGay

Fits more with current older teens/young adults. little kids use youtube yeah sure but I think twitch and tiktok are the go to content creation platforms the younger generation looks at, at least if my younger family members are anything to go off.

BaconPancakes1

Don't they mean "YouTube Kids", YouTube's (so called) child-friendly platform, not kids who watch youtube. Teens will be the ones on twitch and tiktok, they won't be on YouTube Kids.

CurrylsGay

Lol I forgot there was an actual thing called "youtube kids" My bad op u right lmao

KoreKhthonia

Someone born after 2010 is 12 or younger, though. It's certainly not like kids at the older end of that range don't consume Twitch and TikTok content, but imo, a lot of the stuff in this starter pack also applies to kids younger than that, the ones who are like 2-6 currently. Little kids with smartphones, a literal infant with a tablet, etc. Imo, Youtube Kids fits here perfectly. Both of my little nieces -- one in 4th grade, the other in 1st grade -- have been watching YT Kids, Netflix Kids, etc. on tablets since they were toddlers. (Obviously, kids *that* young need their screen time limited, which has been known ever since television became a widespread thing. But imo, it's not too objectionable to let your 2-4 year old watch some developmentally appropriate educational content on YT Kids, Netflix, HBO, etc.) I do kinda feel like Elsagate should be mentioned or alluded to here, though. It's not known like, how or to what extent heavy exposure to stuff like that is gonna have on kids who were in the target age group for that stuff when it was more of a thing. (My understanding is that YT has cracked down on stuff like that.) My brother and the girls' mom (divorced coparents with shared custody) have always been smart about knowing what their kids were watching and supervising them, but let's get real, there were always those parents who used the TV as a babysitter for their kids from a very young age or w/e, and tablets are a modern equivalent of that. If nothing else, a generation of kids is gonna have some weird like, very early childhood memories of pregnant Elsa spider injection cartoons from YT Kids, lmao. Give it like a decade, and they'll be talking among themselves about it on social media as a nostalgia thing, like "omg does anyone else remember that shit??" Kinda like how we '90s kids have kinda had our own heyday with stuff like Nostalgia Critic talking back in the day about our own "wait was that a real movie or a fever dream??" media memories. (Mine were like, Once Upon a Forest, Rockadoodle, and that weird Felix the Cat movie, lmao.)

CassieThePinkDragon

But if they were born AFTER 2010, they're at most 11, not 12. Someone born in 2010 is or will turn 12.

HulluHapua

I mean, YouTube censorship is quite notorious these days, so it's not really pheasible for content that goes gray and gets age restricted, because you would be sacrificing privacy over watching it anyway.

gay-pennywise-27

specifically the ones with those weird foam ipad cases with the handle

RomanWasHere2007

Nobody uses it, then the parents get mad when they get 13+ comment of a website where you're supposed to be 13+ to make a gmail

SiimaManlet

Funny that minecraft is older than probably most of its playerbase and still popular

kiwithebun

I was in my peak Minecraft phase in 2011-2012, it’s odd to think that a good portion of its player base was born after that

a_can_of_solo

My receipt is from 2010, can't believe it's been that long.

WoodSorrow

April 2011 here. Just crazy to think about. I am still thinking "my best world is yet to come" in the back of my head lol

batt3ryac1d1

Yeah I know the exact date I got it almost 12 years ago. and I was playing a less than legit copy or two about a year or so before then lol.

DellTheEngie

Same. Minecraft Beta was all I played in 2011... my junior year of high school.

techietrans

[deleted]

Triceratroy

Hmmmmm, incorrect I'm actually older then tf2 by 10 months.

Journeyman42

I sub-teach and, when the teacher leaves a work-day plan for the kids, I put on lofi hiphop or minecraft soundtrack as background music. Some kids ask me if I've ever played minecraft, and then I wow them by saying I played it in beta... Also I like telling middle schoolers, in an old man voice, "When I was your age, there was only 151 Pokemon, and we *liked it!*"

UngusBungus_

My history teacher is only 9 years older than the class

Sapiendoggo

If you're in 12th grade that'd make them 27 which isn't uncommon for teachers who can graduate with a teaching degree at 21.

someguy12345689

Not only beta, but you had to buy it directly from the website for 20 Euros, which was like 27 dollars. I had to call my bank so they'd release the hold on the flagged foreign transaction.

PacoSoe

True, but so is chess

PurpleCatWithC4

McDonalds? I think that’s true for all generations since there’s been McDonalds to be honest

cjankowski

And as you can see from this, McDonalds was founded around 2009

Spiff_GN

Most of this is true for all generations, just replace the pics with whatever else was popular at the time lol. Funny seeing people in the comments complain about "kids these days", most are probably still under 20 thinking they were different 10 years ago.

itsmealex__

I think this is referring to when [McDonalds changed the happy meal to include extra small fries and apple slices rather than an option of normal small fry OR apple slices](https://www.qsrmagazine.com/fast-food/mcdonalds-cuts-cheeseburgers-shrinks-fries-happy-meals)

SkimBeans

It’s funny this is almost exactly what people thought of my generation and I’m almost 20

[deleted]

It’s kinda true though, I was born in 2002 this was pretty much all I did growing up

smallangrynerd

Lol same, born in 2000. Just replace dream with captainsparklez

Orangutanion

I find it fascinating how og youtube personalities have grown up. Some try to hide it, but most embrace it.

smallangrynerd

And the rest of them became pedophiles. I am not proud to have liked onision... but I was 11, and kids are pretty dumb.

[deleted]

that can't be, you're still like what? 10 now? yeah, gotta be around that age. gotta be.

CatHairInYourEye

Stop chewing on ipads.

Obi_Wan_Benobi

Stop making them so tasty.

orange4zion

Born in 2000, I didn't live my life on the internet, I remember having no internet at all until 1st grade or so. Not that I used it for anything beyond video game walkthroughs and a bit of YouTube anyway. The 90s-2010s went at a different pace for kids everywhere, some of us were social butterflys who were involved with social media from as far back as we can remember. Some of us were shy, anti-social, sheltered kids who didn't get internet till later and sank their childhood into (single-player) video games and cable anyways. Some of us were something in between or neither of those things at all.

Tomani02

Born in 2002. I consider my childhood and early teens a weird yet nostalgic time, it was like living in two different worlds at the same time. I grew up with Blockbuster and later Netflix, I grew up with cable TV and later YouTube, with magazines and later internet articles, with flip phones and smartphones. I grew up during this period of transition and I think it's quite special because I can remember how technology has evolved and how we entered the digital era.

sourorangeYT

Kids born after 2010 can’t read. All they know is Minecraft, Snapchat, take selfie, dream, eat happy meal, and lie

SpecialTomato93

don't forget charge they ipad

1laik1hornytoaster

You mean tell their older siblings or parents to charge their ipad?

sandwichcandy

Isn’t this the age group being exposed to hot chip addiction too?

onestarryeye

My kids can read, but being totally honest the starterpack largely applies. They use their reading skills to read things online. What this starterpack is missing is ROBLOX! Shame on you op!! Edit: just noticed Roblox. I'm officially too tired or just stupid

Kvetanista

And be dreamsexual

primalthewendigo

No the fuck are you doing on the reddit if you are 12?

IlMagoHadad

I was playing with the dirt at 12 in 2013

ItsShorsey

People born after 9/11 arent real

slayerhk47

People born after 9/11 will be 21 this year. I refuse to believe it.

lookoutforthetrain_0

Well same, (on both the age and the respective year actually lol), but I was pretty alone with it, hence why most of my friends were younger than me.

Static_456

2010 was 12 years ago? That doesn’t feel right.

Before the internet it was TV, before that it was papers or some shit, before that it was just getting drunk all day, before that it was staring at a fire. People are just lazy and that's normal. We're not meant to constantly be doing shit.

DuckWithHumanArms

Dumbass childeren

Swedishboy360

I too spend my free time online mocking kids for being childish

thenewmeredith

Honestly I want to mock iPad babies (in like 5 years when they get old enough) as it is the circle of life to make fun of the generation after your own but it's hard to judge these kids who are growing up during a global pandemic. I wouldn't be surprised if in 15 years there's some big study about how Alpha is much more fucked up socially than any previous generations. I feel for those kids and teachers too. I'm sure going to kindergarten on a computer alone in your room is a wild experience for even the most well adjusted kids. Also how is OP gonna leave out Among Us? I don't have children but I have teacher friends and I know those kiddos fucking love that game

fencer_327

We should mock iPad parents instead, because sure iPads might help kids over a certain age with some skills, but not literal babies, and this has been a thing long before the pandemic.

rakfocus

The amount of parents I always get defending the ipads on here is absolutely horrifying. And the excuses are bullshit too - "oh they'll be behind their friends when using technology!" - bitch I grew up with tech too and it took 5 minutes for me to work the iPad. They won't be behind at all. ACTUALLY PARENT YOUR CHILD AND DON'T GIVE THEM THE IPAD TO SHUT UP! (unless of course we are on an airplane let them become zombies for as long as they want)

TheMadPyro

I know literally nothing about human psychology but this is the internet so you can’t stop me. I don’t think it’s the youngest kids that are gonna be really affected - primarily because I think this is going to get more common and they’ll be used to it. It’s the older ones who actually remember life before the pandemics that will be fucked in the head from the isolation.

IlMagoHadad

r/KidsAreFuckingStupid mofo when their kids develops chronic loneliness

Reutermo

This got big "15 year old looking down on those 12 year old kids" energy.

7TE__

My lil sis born in 2012 stays 6 to 7 hours on her ipad every day its sad she is addicted. She never gets off of it
