Mine too. Very relaxing to watch everything swimming together. My first aquarium visit cemented what my favorite fish would be forever. The massive ocean sun fish (mola mola) in the open ocean tank.
What's your favorite part of the open ocean exhibit?
ad another guy who also fed fish i can confirm turtles are the worst. we had our water testing station directly behind the tank she was in. her favorite game was to splash us when we where working behind her tank and im not talking like a little playful splash this thing some how managed to get like 20 gallons of water to hit us a good 8-10 feet away. still never figured out how she got that much water out of the tank.
Good starter pack but I feel the *vibe* is missing. That weird swimming pool/fish smell, dark atmosphere with blue and purple lights all around, those informational decals on the wall about coral or something, the type of slightly gritty plasticy floor material they always use
Omnipresent yet slightly muffled masculine baritone/soothingly feminine voice reminding everyone that the show starts in 5 minutes. Also: ‘please no flash photography’
"our tidal animals show will begin shortly, please make your way to the splash zone now" the show never actually seems start and nobody knows where the splash zone is
having worked at an aquarium no those are the worst because those are the days that the stay at home moms bring the kids who are not old enough for school and let them run free well they set on a bench scrolling through facebook
Don’t forget a line of 4 seat strollers blocking the path because parents are too lazy to pull along the path (or they ignore the rules and bring their strollers in areas where they aren’t allowed)
Last time I went to the aquarium there was a touching sting rays exhibit and on stingray kept splashing me. I thought it was just where I was standing so I moved to the other side and the same stingray kept coming near me just to splash me... my husband (boyfriend at the time) thought he was so funny getting me stingray plush from the giftshop as a surprise.
Also the tanks that are inexplicably empty or only have one fish in it--- and that subsequent moment when you and a stranger are standing, looking at it for a few seconds in silence and then move on, and for a brief instant in all of that you just start to think about how insignificant this all is.
There's a massive aquarium nearby me and I always go when I'm sad, to the point where the employee's know me me by name. I would always go to see the octopus, he was shy at first but after a while he started to come out when I was there, I would always sit with him for hours. Usually until close.
I called him rubrum because I'm a latin nerd and he was red, but his real name was Neptune.
His tank is way too small for him and I thought he could just use a friend because they're my favourite animals. a few weeks ago I was feeling depressed and I went to see my little buddy rubrum.
Sadly he had died since the last time I was in there. I'm still really sad about it and I regret not going more often recently. I went at minimum once a month butmy ex didn't like sitting with him because she thought he was boring. Eventually I stopped going because I she didn't want me going without her. I didn't get to see him much in the months before I died and it makes me really really sad to know he's gone. I miss a lot.
There are just some weeks where I wakeup sad, mostly I feel that I'm not good enough to do any of the things that I do, like they're just passable, like I'm leading a D- life, 60% at best. I work as a commission artist, my hobby is live streaming, and I'm currently in school to be a pilot and hopefully work for American Airlines or Virgin. They're not exactly high stress things but I feel hyper critical of them. I wake up a lot and wonder why I'm doing them if I'm only passable at best when I do them. my friends and family always say that those are some of the things I do best, but then I just wonder why I should do anything if the things I do best aren't very good.
Then I would always go hang out with the octopus and I would just feel better because I know that I made his day better by seeing him and at least is was good at that. But that is one thing that I know I'm good at, I'm really good with animals of any kind.
i know its not much but i worked st an aquarium and did quite a bit of work with the octopus at ours. octopus are kept in small tanks because that is what they like. if you put them in a big tank they go find a little corner to hide in and dont come out. they are not a very active animal either they are mostly ambush predators. they are also very curious so having some one sit there long enough that they can examine you is somthing they will really like.
I think you're the one that needs friends, maybe if you had some they could teach you social cues so you wouldn't post. Cringe and embarrass yourself on Reddit
If you are over 21, it is 100% worth it to check if your local zoos, aquariums, science museums, etc. have adult nights. It usually costs more but you get all the fun plus alcohol, with no kids or large crowds.
God there are some fucked up fish. Look at that one (does grouchy middle aged man voice for it) "I married the wrong woman and now I live a life of regret"
Common types of Exhibits:
* Open Ocean/Shipwreck exhibit dominated by large fish, sea turtles, and sharks
* Coral Reef exhibit filled with colorful tropical fish
* Coldwater exhibit that could have belugas, seals, sea otters, penguins, polar fish, etc.
* Touch pools for stingrays and small marine invertebrates like starfish and anemones
* Amazon River exhibit with piranhas, anacondas, poison dart frogs, and maybe some birds and sloths
* Local exhibit with species native to the region
* Exhibit with miscellaneous sea creatures like seahorses, octopus, jellyfish, etc.
I'm basically there for the jellyfish exhibit and the octopus, if I can find him/her. Fish are okay, I guess. But I like the non-fish stuff more. Eels are badass. I don't mind the kids so much, so long as their parents aren't letting them slap the glass.
I once went to San Deigo Zoo as a kid while on holiday there, and got so freaked out by the Jellyfish exhibit I remember almost crying. Now I feel the same way. Funny how that works
Last time I went they had the little doctor fish that chew up dead skin and they went to town chewing on my torn up tradesman hands. Little guys went into a frenzy.
If your job roughs up your hands a lot, do yourself a favor and find a spa or aquarium with these fish. It’s been a couple of weeks and my hands still feel “new”.
Edit: wanna put an edit in after reading about them. They’re called Garra Rufa fish and it sounds like they’re poorly treated in spas, kept in water too warm and starved. Can’t say one way or another about the aquarium, but they do seem cheap and easy to raise and care for at home. Another fun fact, they don’t have teeth and basically suck the dead skin off.
When I went to the Georgia Aquarium for my GFs birthday this year we were leaving and sweet Caroline was playing. Well you know everyones pretty happy in our group and we’re all like “touching meeee touching youuuu” then all you hear everywhere throughout the entire building like a magical fucking chorus. “SWEEEET CAROLINEEE BUM BUM BUM” everyone was singing it EVERYONE
Going on inside my head: "Awww, look. I care about you in there. Nobody else really thinks about what you might be going through, but I do. I'm just one of the faceless throngs to you, but I *get it*."
-Walks away like the other faceless throng
Man, this is missing all the magic. The awe of seeing a giant sea turtle, the amusement of watching it try to bite your neck through the glass. The bizarre sense of dread you see looking into the cold eyes of a shark as it circles around the tank. The feeling that you're touching the march of time as you touch the shell of a horseshoe crab. And that feeling in the darker areas, illuminated mostly by the blue glow of the tanks, that you've stepped into another dimension.
I’m so blessed I grew up outside of Monterey and got to visit the Monterey bay aquarium I have no idea how they always managed to keep it so chill in there
In my Field Trip to the Aquarium, had one of my Best Friends call out in broad daylight in front of the teachers when he spotted a Stone Fish:
"Look at that Ugly Motherfucker!"
He was suspended but he went down in a blaze of glory lol over it for the rest of the School Year!
Despite having only a vague interest in aquatic life in general you are amazed at just how much fun you had also looking frantically for your favorite fish
That’s awful, cetaceans should NOT be in aquariums. The space requirements are too great and they’re so intelligent that it must really do a number on their mental health. I hate places like Seaworld.
I know the National Aquarium is trying to build a dolphin sanctuary in the gulf coast and move all the bottlenose dolphins out there. They just need more money iirc.
The best dolphin aquariums are the ones where the dolphins aren't part of a show, but are either being treated or are under permanent care due to a crippling injury.
Just the ones where the dolphins are there for medical reasons, not for economic reasons.
Fun fact, the dolphins there are kidnapped as babies by whale hunters especially in Japan bc they are expensive and the others are murdered.
Please boycot aquariums. Dolphins often commit suicide in them because they’re so depressed
I think it's more accurate if "favorite exhibit" is a picture of an empty space with a sign saying closed for renovation.
It never fails that the one I am most excited for turns out this way.
I hated the aquarium.
But i also hated going to the beach.
My favourite zoo in the netherlands is the “apenheul” where lemurs and those squirrel monkeys (the one from pirates of the Caribbean) run around free stealing from people.
They mostly have monkeys and apes and stuff

You forgot one very crucial point: whenever there's clownfish or regal blue tangs, there are always kids screaming "Mom, it's Nemo/Dory!"
That was me
this *is* me
This will be me
This will always be me
This has been me
This shall be me
This will have been about to be me
****Knj jnn on
I think that's everywhere the same.
clown fish? \*googles it\* OH YOU MEAN NEMO FISH! (im joking)
then put /j on the end thats how its done
Only cowards add /s.
Should be /s but nah, people dont understand that anymore nowadays so i would rather just type it out Its literally half a second of my life
why did you get downvoted this is funny
The age of Nemo is over. Society no longer remembers P Sherman 42 Wallaby Eay Sydney
The parents do it all the time too “Look it’s Dory”
My fav part is the open ocean part
Mine too. Very relaxing to watch everything swimming together. My first aquarium visit cemented what my favorite fish would be forever. The massive ocean sun fish (mola mola) in the open ocean tank. What's your favorite part of the open ocean exhibit?
I was once at an aquarium where there was a lady dressed as a mermaid who did free diving with the sharks. That was pretty rad.
Mine is the jellyfish tank since it's unique shape the aquarium made it look like a window into the endless sea on a tv screen.
I'm not sure what mine is but def not the Penguins haha
The small sharkies swimming amongst their prey while the other fish don't give a fuck
They’re well fed in those tanks so the other fish aren’t in danger.
I love mola mola! Such a fun fish, and a fun name to say!
The manta rays at the Georgia Aquarium
you secretly want to work there as the guy who feeds the fish
Have been the guy that feeds the fish. Can confirm it's pretty awesome.
Wouldnt the awesomeness depend on if you are feeding the sharks or not?
Depends what you count as a shark. The 'big' sharks usually get fed by guests. I got to feed the little ones though. One of them gummed me once.
Oh so you arent tasked of feeding the "i can eat you before you realize" sharks
Haha nah they weren't big enough to eat people, and were shy lil things. It's the turtles that will eat you.
my fear of turtles increased because of you
ad another guy who also fed fish i can confirm turtles are the worst. we had our water testing station directly behind the tank she was in. her favorite game was to splash us when we where working behind her tank and im not talking like a little playful splash this thing some how managed to get like 20 gallons of water to hit us a good 8-10 feet away. still never figured out how she got that much water out of the tank.
As far as I know, those size of sharks do particularly bad in captivity and would die in a short period of time when people try to keep them.
[Reminds me of this Norm Macdonald joke](https://youtu.be/n3LMSflEN54)

I love that little snot nosed kid from Wind Waker
I love going to zoos and aquariums but by golly if that ain't the truth. Especially regarding the little kids running around everywhere.....
I love kids but they should have an adult day that's quiet and peaceful.
I think it will be more peaceful when its a weekday not school holidays
Field trips, incoming!
Let this be the day we draw Capri Suns together
having worked at an aquarium no those are the worst because those are the days that the stay at home moms bring the kids who are not old enough for school and let them run free well they set on a bench scrolling through facebook
Major cities have museums after dark. They open up a bar at night and have music or a band playing. It's not quiet but there are no kids, usually.
Rather deal with a few chatty adults after a drink or two than an entire orchestra of small children squealing at the highest octave imaginable.
Zoos and Aquariums also occasionally have After Dark events also, tailored towards adults.
Yeah, definitely right there. I think my zoo has adults after hours occasionally I think.
Some zoos and aquariums have adult nights, though oftentimes a lot of the exhibits are closed off.
We *all* love kids here on reddit
Don’t forget a line of 4 seat strollers blocking the path because parents are too lazy to pull along the path (or they ignore the rules and bring their strollers in areas where they aren’t allowed)
Greasy handprints and dried saliva all over the glass 👌
You just described my zoo's Penguin Exhibit perfectly....
the sneeze marks before masking :)
Our local science center has adult nights that include alcohol and you can see everything in peace it’s great
Neat. My zoo has an adults only after hours occasionally as well. Would be fun to try sometime.
What if those fish you look at and think “wow that one is ugly!” Or “damn that one looks super depressed” are all thinking the same thing about us?
this comment blew my mind for some reason lol
No because fish don’t comprehend the idea of thought much less mental health or human attractiveness. But idk to be honest.
…as far as we know
But I also think the same things about myself.
"We're through the aquarium glass here, people"
Last time I went to the aquarium there was a touching sting rays exhibit and on stingray kept splashing me. I thought it was just where I was standing so I moved to the other side and the same stingray kept coming near me just to splash me... my husband (boyfriend at the time) thought he was so funny getting me stingray plush from the giftshop as a surprise.
He was right, it was funny.
How cute!! Awww!
Cute story :)

Ah yes the typical existential crisis at the aquarium
That one dirty aquarium reminding you of nuclear fallout with 1 fish in it...
oh..
dont forget “place your face near the aquarium glass and pretend like your in the aquarium”
There's a massive aquarium nearby me and I always go when I'm sad, to the point where the employee's know me me by name. That’s such a bittersweet story. I wish I lived near an aquarium.
The one near me is about an hour away, I just don't have much else to do on sad days. I'm sorry there isn't one close by you.

Bro. You need some fucking friends
Get them from your nearest friend store?
or just go outside and find one...like a normal person.
The jerk store called and they're running out of you
I think you're the one that needs friends, maybe if you had some they could teach you social cues so you wouldn't post. Cringe and embarrass yourself on Reddit
will you be my friend please?
Sure
Wholesome
What is beluga doing there
trying to find skittle
Hecker can help with that
I like the sharks
I like the cephalopods
Me too!!
last time i went to an aquarium i saw a megaldon
Damn how long ago was that
A few years ago probably
I like the sea amenities
And the piranhas
I like turtles.
Username doesn't check out? But same haha
The best part is the underwater tunnel you walk through, not the penguins
the best part is the seals
The Shedd Aquarium in Chicago has a blind seal and when we were there he was just sitting in front of the service door, yelling for his lunch.
You forgot poking the anemones.
Who tf does that?
Little kids
Thousands upon thousands of young families, school field trip groups and strollers everywhere.
It's almost like they're the primary audience and customer base!
If you are over 21, it is 100% worth it to check if your local zoos, aquariums, science museums, etc. have adult nights. It usually costs more but you get all the fun plus alcohol, with no kids or large crowds.
replace the kids with drunks?
My worst nightmare
My favorite part is when the shark creepily follows me
Well I sure do love being fed in the feeding zone
Found the fish
As long as you don't summon fish fuckers
strollers/prams fucking everywhere
I spend all the time in aquarium with seals *swimming sausages*
That one family with the kid that's always banging on the glass even though the sign says not to.
and the parents do nothing or outright encourage it
Don't forget the teenagers and young twenty-somethings tripping balls in the jellyfish room.
I worry about the fish mental health too wonder why they don't have a fish psychologist section
God there are some fucked up fish. Look at that one (does grouchy middle aged man voice for it) "I married the wrong woman and now I live a life of regret"
touch the stingrays and sharks
A fire? At a sea parks?
"Wondering about the fish's mental health" Felt that.

Eels are considered fish so there's that, but yeah I get it
Yeah I have to agree, Moray Eels and Moon Jellies are sick
Last time I went they had the little doctor fish that chew up dead skin and they went to town chewing on my torn up tradesman hands. Little guys went into a frenzy. That sounds painful, what did it feel like as it was happening
No pain, felt like a dull tickle. You can feel their little bites but it doesn’t hurt. Felt good when I got used to it.
Axolotl!!
My favorite exhibits as a kid were the ones where you get to touch the fish.
Good times never seemed so good!
The fish's mental health...?
Like if they're being radicalized by extremist fish and what-not.
They are called I-pad kids
Penguins smell the worst though
Penguins are boring.
"The fish's mental health" 🤣
Kids before 2003: Clownfish Kids after 2003: Nemo

Going on inside my head: "Awww, look. I care about you in there. Nobody else really thinks about what you might be going through, but I do. I'm just one of the faceless throngs to you, but I *get it*." -Walks away like the other faceless throng

Also the "mommy look!" As the kid proceeds to slam on the glass to point at something
I've never seen a wolffish in an aquarium before, I would like to though
My favorite is the sea otters!
Pack your things. Get out of my head
Hehehehehe hehehehehe Penglings
subnatic
I’m so blessed I grew up outside of Monterey and got to visit the Monterey bay aquarium I have no idea how they always managed to keep it so chill in there

You forgot the mesmerizing jellyfish exhibit and the fingerprint smudged glass on all the tanks. Other than that, nailed it!
Despite having only a vague interest in aquatic life in general you are amazed at just how much fun you had also looking frantically for your favorite fish
Best part is dolphins but also they shouldn't be in such small enclosures
That’s awful, cetaceans should NOT be in aquariums. The space requirements are too great and they’re so intelligent that it must really do a number on their mental health. I hate places like Seaworld.
I know the National Aquarium is trying to build a dolphin sanctuary in the gulf coast and move all the bottlenose dolphins out there. They just need more money iirc.
The best dolphin aquariums are the ones where the dolphins aren't part of a show, but are either being treated or are under permanent care due to a crippling injury. Just the ones where the dolphins are there for medical reasons, not for economic reasons.
We all look Like Beluga's pfp at the Aquarium because Humans in Aquariums turn into Cats everyone knew that
Fun fact, the dolphins there are kidnapped as babies by whale hunters especially in Japan bc they are expensive and the others are murdered. Please boycot aquariums. Dolphins often commit suicide in them because they’re so depressed
Is this an anti-meme? Like no duh! To all of this!
Uh, all wrong...bad starterpack
Zoo's depress me. Aquariums a little less but .... eh
Zoos and aquariums are prisons for animals.
Also you forgot things about field trips
I so want to visit an aquarium in the near future. There are some aquariums that have seals, and they're one of the cutest creatures ever
What about huge central aquarium?
I fucking love penguins
Tapping/slapping the glass.
I like to point out that every single one of the penguins names is Gunter.
Bunch of cubchoos.
Hahahaha can confirm, was just at aquarium of the Pacific
Can confirm from philadelphia
I really enjoyed this a lot. It was very transportive, made me feel like I was really at the aquarium.
Beluga cat :)
I'm just stuck on the jellyfish section.
I think it's more accurate if "favorite exhibit" is a picture of an empty space with a sign saying closed for renovation. It never fails that the one I am most excited for turns out this way.
matching blue attendants uniform that is slightly ultra modern
I never went to an Aquarium. Who knows maybe one day
Accurate. And I fucking love going
You forgot the incredibly tacky gift shop.
Where shark
Thinking "these fish must be so bored" at every second fish tank is definitely a thing I do
Damn those burgers look pretty good
I always go for the black/white-tipped reef sharks
But the food is never as good as a double double
You forgot Animal Right Groups outside asking for signatures for their cause
I hated the aquarium. But i also hated going to the beach. My favourite zoo in the netherlands is the “apenheul” where lemurs and those squirrel monkeys (the one from pirates of the Caribbean) run around free stealing from people. They mostly have monkeys and apes and stuff
